The dreamcast is one of the absolute easiest consoles to burn CDs of games for. My guess is this is the Mario 64 Source port decomplication that was made a few years back ported to the dreamcast and it's possible that you bought a glorified burnt CD and that's why it only works on older dreamcast models. Still this is amazing to see! I hope the people who worked on this continue to optimize it and make it even better!
It is funny to think think that Scott the Woz just uploaded a video concerning Super Mario 64 DS, a remake of the N64 original. A day later, here you are talking about what is technically a slight demake of the same game! ...I guess 2 great minds think alike!
the editing style is so raw and genuine it reminds me of old youtube, when it was just people making fun videos without expensive equipment and insane fast paced editing.
What’s actually pretty cool is you can do this 100% legally though less convenient than just spending $30 on eBay. This is based off of the SM64 decomp so if you have an SM64 rom lying around (it’s really easy to rip it from the Wii or Wii U virtual console) you can provide that rom to the Dreamcast port of the decomp and compile an ISO ready to be burned to a CD.
1:35 So that it doesn't have the load times, yes. Similar to the process of loading shaders where you can choose stutters at the cost of instant startup or a prolonged wait in exchange for no hiccups. 2:43 The version that uses the PC port runs flawlessly. But I will give this one credit still. Especially when I think back with a scenario of some guy getting this working in the mid-thousands and everyone losing their mind. This would have been the talk of the forums.
You remind me of some of the guys I went to high school with. They looked unassuming and that's why they knew how to get away with shit lmao. Awesome vid dude. I love the only CRT television too. It's the only screen you can play like Time Crisis and Lethal Enforcers on.
@@The_Moronic_Company considering that unoriginality equals lack of quality and same with at home, does this mean it exceeds the Intenger limit and overflows to abundance of quality?
This is a good video for all those wishing that N64 would had used CD's. When on reality, at the time only format that would allow freedom of choice when it comes gameplay & content was cartridge. That's how we got Mario 64 and Zelda 64 on full 3D during nineties!
I have no idea how CDs would be limiting aside from loading times Either way that was one of the factors that made the n64 less successful aside from the unbearable RAMbus & texture cache
@@ssg-eggunner Console can easily stream lots of data from cartridge all the time during gameplay. Levels are not decided in advance, instead they are flexible depending player's own decitions. This makes events like real -time side-quests possible as well as completedly nonlinear levels. CD-format was too slow for fully interactive gameplay & camera control.
It is cool seeing this 'proof-of-concept' as it reminds me of early N64 emulation on PC - which, if I remember correctly, took quite a bit more CPU speed to run than what's inside of the Dreamcast. At the time, it seemed like SNES and Sega Genesis were about the limit for the hardware, so it's even more impressive seeing it at least running. Even the original Xbox which ran at 750MHz (similar to the Wii) had struggles with some N64.
I think it's because it uses a compilation of the Open Source sm64 project, which I saw on a Bringus Studios video when he compiles the rom and runs on a Wii like virtual console, has similar to identical issues as shown in the video.
Go try putting Mario 64 on a console that supports achievements or trophies then I’ll be interested Nintendo still today doesn’t give achievements I only buy exclusive new releases not old games

I remember someone saying it would not go well But let's see I imagine you could even enhance sm64 if you use higher res textures, since PS1 has a better texture cache than N64 and a better RAMbus
It is a port, BUT... if it was recoded native from scratch to the Dreamcast, I am sure it would run much better, faster, smoother, etc. Nintendo would never go for that lol. I am impressed however that it works and runs at all. Its a shame that the saving doesn't function.
It would EASILY run if they took the code base from the de-compiled version from N64 and now available natively on PC and compiled it natively for the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast is at least 4x-6x faster in just about everything (CPU, GPU, Memory, etc...). Technology was leaping constantly during that era.
@NateDohDoubleGee True, but Dreancast is an older console, and just like each console is unique and different, they can be a bit more difficult to code for. PS2 was known to be difficult, but the games did look great on it. I am also a big fan of the Dreamcast graphics in general. There is no easy way to recompile code, at least not yet... so it all must be done manually and even if someone does, there's still a chance all that hard work could go out the window with a cease and desist notice. It's risky even if it could be great to add new life to old games and consoles due to legal matters. Still, it could be worth the effort...
Yep! When Sony was turned down from Nintendo, they went to Sega. In the universe I got this, Sega agreed to create a version of the Saturn with Sony. It was an instant success and caused Nintendo to lose billions. Nintendo was so desparate by the 6th generation that they started porting their games to Sega hardware!
It’s actually just a MIL based disc and for a game like Mario 64 it beats the crap out of the laser . You also can just find the .cdi or mil format image of the game online and burn it with imgburn . I can run Super Nintendo on Sega Saturn with 4mb ram support and still games like super Mario world and Jurassic park run at like 2.5 frames a second
