@Chanel Oberlin Time has nothing to do with how good music is. It has to do with quality. And I'm saying that there were a lot more quality pop songs in the 80's than today. And I'm sure a lot of older folks would say that rock was better in the 60's,70's & 80's and Hip Hop and R&B were better in the 90's and comparing that with today's music within those genres I would agree with them. The thing I've noticed with every music genre is that there's stages: the infancy stage, the golden era, the decline in quality stage and the dead stage. And the golden era for pop was the 80's
Pop music may not always be super deep, but it’s for a certain mood. I like some pop music, there’s definitely good artists in the genre, but I think that with every genre you can find gems

Not sjre about other people, but my problem is the fact that it is unoriginal. Sure, now you can say, that why would i care. But in other genres there are many more talented musicians, releasing much better quality music, that isn't the same song over and over again. I am mostly talking about pop and newer hip hop

Trust me guys. ALL of you like at least one song that is in the Pop genre or that has the simplistic formula utilized by the pop genre. You may not even know that the song is a pop song, but you might find yourself listening to it anyway and enjoying it.....

It's because pop songs have a slightly catchy piece or melody in their music, then extends and repeats it over and over again. Hearing that on the radio thousands of times makes you sick of hearing it

Since I'm a metalhead, I found the thumbnail interesting. A few metal acts I enjoy listening to are Iron Maiden, Slipknot (and no, I'm not a poser), Slayer, Death, Cannibal Corpse, Judas Priest, Pantera, Nile, Metallica, Wage War, Motörhead, Ozzy Osbourne, Bloodbath, Opeth, Mastodon, Avenged Sevenfold, Varials, King Diamond, Gojira, Emmure, and System Of A Down!

Why is rap so popular these days. I hesitate to even call it music often.
Pat Bocchicchio what you’re talking about is mumble rap (I assume) which isn’t really a rap, it shouldn’t even be called rap, you need to listen to real rap, not all this, “Yeah yeah yeah mhm uhm ya.”
Pat Bocchicchio when rap was at its best in the 90s the rappers talking about the issues in their community no one wanted to accept it in the mainstream but since now it has become ignorant and filled with culture vultures now it has become popular.
Rap infused with metal in the form of rage against the Machine and few other bands is the best rap I've heard. Other than that nope. Just a select few songs.
as ivana said; there's a lot of great rap music, but i think one of the best mainstream rappers right now is childish gambino. not THE best, because there are a lot of great ones out there, but he's been my favorite since 2012.
Comedy rap is the only rap I like. Usually the lyrical content means nothing to me. I don't care about the streets or whatever drug is popular.

Music is good with lyrics if the song's lyrics still add to the instrumentation. If not, then it's pointless.

My dad likes classic rock and metal and my sister likes most music genres (other than country) so they're the ones who influenced my music taste the most. My dad got me into Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, Megadeth, and Judas Priest and my sister got me into Avenged Sevenfold and Avatar. I now listen to a lot more metal bands, and currently my two favorite bands are Gojira and Avatar.
Geez, I am sorry, it is only my own opinion, but Avatar is one of the worst bands I have ever heard.

Although it's complete death growls so if you aint into that maybe skip and listen to Black sabbath then progress your way up.

Pleasurable might mean music that correlates to their tastes.
Also I have a theory. Maybe musical taste boils down to mental state, genetics, or even cultural background. For example, I find classical, rock, and metal music to be most interesting. My family comes from Europe (more specifically, Britain). Europe is the home to most classical music and England could be attributed as rock and metal's birthplace.

My early years were mostly bands like the carpenters (I’m old) but my teen years were heavy metal. Still to this day a song can come on and a memory will come with it.

Not to sound stupid or anything but for some people it can be something to relax them from the day. For example Better by Khalid is a song I'm enjoying due to its relaxing nature throughout the song while work is all about getting stuff clean as quick and efficient as possible.
