    Omg! 99 euro for 25 extra high quality images are to cheap. People are so rude, do they think its free for you to buy your equipment, backdrops, pay your babysitters, rent, food and so on. Keep on the good work, don't give in on those people. Your job are exelent, wish I was as good as you! 💕

      I can understand why my prices might sound low. I also agree you shouldn't undervalue you time, creativity, energy etc and take into account the hours, equipment, costs etc you put into your work. However, it also differs based on where you live, the income levels, what photographers around you charge... The 99 euros is extra on top of the session fee and people like to come back for shoots. Sometimes 3 times a year, because they can afford it. I also like to make photography available and affordable for families around me.

    Fenna, you made me smile cause I guess it’s like that in every customer service job. I work as a receptionist at a hotel and customers seem happy during the many days I see them. Then, the day of check out, they want to stay in their rooms a couple extra hours. If that’s not possible and I say no, they suddenly have a ton of complaints about their stay.... that never mentioned to me before! Thanks for this video. I’m a part time photographer too and you’re a huge inspiration to me. 💕

    I have a confession to make. When I booked my first child photoshoot I got the 10 pictures that I chose that where part of the deal. I wanted the entire gallery because I really liked most of the picture but I couldn't afford it and then I thought "They should include all the pictures without extra charges because the pictures are already there, the job was done, it's so unfair". After that I bought a camera because I was interested in photography and I decided to take my own pictures, just to realize the hard work that it is to be a photographer, from 100 shots that I take I end up liking 3 pictures of the whole sesion, and now I think "I should have try to pay for those pictures that I really liked" but now they're gone forever and my daughter is not baby anymore 😭. Sometimes as clients we are not aware that taking pictures is not just pressing a button.

Now I'm worried that I won't get the balance because this young man said he didn't like his hair. Even though I told him to check his hair in the bathroom and he did. And there is also a full length mirror right by the backdrop. And we even photographed him in 5 different outfits and he still didn't like his hair out of 60 proofs. I told them I can edit the hair so it doesn't look so messy but I'm mostly mad at myself. At least I got 50%. But still. The whole thing has caught me off guard because I've haven't had anyone not like their photos in two whole years.

    For having been in the realm of management in the restaurant business I can attest to every scam that customers can come up with to get a free meal. There were always legitimate complaints, and I was more than happy to make amends, but there are those, as so well pointed out in this video, that are scam artists. If you let them scam you, shame on you but learn from it. I really like at the end how it is pointed out that they must like the photos for they want more of them. That is the logic that saves you and me.
    As a grumpy old man now I get away with my axiom of it is other people that offer up a reason or two not to like them, but there are those that willing go out of their way to give me an abundance of reasons not to like them. So, to make them happy, I choose not to like them and do no business with them ever again.

    here in Australia there is a portable photographer in the shopping center, and I actually worked for them as a photographer but not as sales person as they have different team. we normally took a lot of photos with different props and it depend on family to choose after 2 weeks. I realized later that sometimes family purchase 1-2 photos coz its too pricey but after a month or two the company/sales team contacting the family and offer them discount and instead of them paying $1000 or more they offer them $300 for all image. and thus people learned how to bargain. also I found once you send the gallery to the family what they do is taking a screen shot even with the logo then send it to one of the family member to remove the logo and resize it. so when I had my own business I start encounter these issue. unfortunate they don't understand how expensive the baby pros and equipment. or even not appreciate our time.

    I agree that some people are awkward and will always try to get something for nothing. People dont like paying for you work.! The strange thing is that they are exactly the same when you give them something for nothing. I do photo editing in some groups on face book, we do free photo editing ( no payment). Even when I have done a decent edit for them I still get people complaining. It gets so annoying that now I have cut down the amount of edits I do, I enjoy photo editing, but these people take all the joy and fun out of it. Not everyone is like that, but there are a considerable number who are.!

      @@FennaPhotography Fenna, yes so do I, Its hard to believe there are some people who complain about getting something for nothing but there are some who do. I thought it might be my editing, until I realised the other editors were all getting it too. Sometimes they dont even bother to say thank you for the edit. That is a bit soul destroying. I think some of it is due to jealousy, same with some of your customers I think. They would like to take photos like yours but they know they cant ( which is the reason they come to you in the first place). What they don't realise is that you put in a lot of time and effort to learn photography. You also invested a lot of money to get all your equipment. They are not just paying for the photos, they are paying for your knowledge and expertise.! I think when it is your living you just have to be strict with them. Might be hard for you as you are a very nice person, dont think that comes naturally to you as you like to please your customers( a good thing). But the thing is your customers are not always as thoughtful towards you.!

    Don't feel bad. I do IPS and had people tell me this to my face after gushing over their gallery. I had to develop thick skin over the years to not take it personally, I just let them talk and not react - it is about their insecurities and people feeling offended especially when it comes to finances. I've also made changes in my pre-session consultations so I have both parents or at least two people present to hear my pricing in person to discuss the pricing - I don't even send that via email. I have found people don't read emails or what they sign off on.

    Hi - greetings from germany. Same here. We have a lot of happy customers, but there are also some like you mentioned in your video. Sometimes you ask yourself: "What could I do more?" I have the prices on my website, I write them down and send them in an e- mail, I explain the prices before the photoshoot......" Sometimes I guess that these (rare) costumers dont want (!) to understand it. We had this costumer for example last year who had all the informations, furthermore I calculated the price after the shoot and his orders expecially for him and wrote it down for him. He just wrotes back: (a long time after the shoot and the sending of the layouts) "I dont understand your prices and your list."-....What???? I thought by myself: if so, why didn`t you asked me beforehand about it? Btw.: It is a good way to receive the pay for the shoot at the day of the shooting, we practise this also. Because with the photoshoot you already have done a lot of the work and spend a lot of time for it. - these days I also think about calculating a price for all the files, because there are a lot of custumers who want all the photos afterwards, but I struggle already with the calculation (99.- € would be too cheap I think, but it is difficult to calculate it new for every custumer.) I haven´t found the best solution for it yet. - Beforde the Corona-times, we made a choosing session with the customers in our studio after the shoot, so we can explain to the customer our intention (for example when you crop a head or something like this, like you mentioned in your video. ) So you can avoid that misunderstandings arise. But in these special times we mostly let the custumer choose the best photos on his own at home, the negative thing about it is, that he has no consultation from me.

    • @FennaPhotography
      @FennaPhotography  4 года назад +1

      I think it happened maybe 1 time in the last 7 years and that was because the baby had sharp nails and really made an effort to pull apart the balloon :) Like really made an effort! The baby just looked really confused and wondered where the balloon went. No crying fortunately. When the parents come in, I ask if the baby is scared of balloons. If they say no, I play a bit with the balloon showing the baby and mentioning the word. Usually, the baby gets excited. I use thick, metallic ballons (also no reflections seen in the balloons) and I keep them very small, so it's actually really hard to pop the balloon. I do warn the parents balloons can pop, but won't pop easily.

      Thank you! Yes, I still get requests from new customers daily, asking for photo sessions. I discuss with them how we can schedule a shoot and keep 1,5 meters distance. This can mean an outdoor family session after the school reopen again (in about a week) or a studio session for next month, hoping regulations will allow them. Except from Newborn sessions, I could keep 1,5 meters distance during a studio session (sitter or cake smash) if only the parents come with the baby (max 2 adults, 1 child) and they follow my instructions. This means that the parents dress the baby and place the baby correctly on the set. I follow the government and hope I can start photographing again soon. So, yes, I accept bookings for next month (no newborns yet) and if for some reason we can't shoot, we can reschedule. All the clients are very understanding.

I really want to have a good promotion after this is over

      And also, if I’m using artificial light should I be blocking out the natural? Or is it fine as long as my lighting source is from one main spot? Finding I need higher iso indoor (obviously ) and I am just trying to get the best lighting :)

    • @FennaPhotography
      @FennaPhotography  4 года назад

      Currently so called 'contact professions' are not allowed. So hairdressers, nail salons etc are not allowed to operate. Basically, people are not allowed to touch others, which means that most photographers have cancelled all their studio sessions. Some offer outdoor sessions or window/doorstep sessions, but since I have both kids at home I can't really plan sessions at the moment. I don't know when 'touch professions' are allowed again and whether regulations like face masks/gloves will apply. We just have to wait and see. Most shops/malls have stayed open and the schools will reopen again on the 11th of May. I'm not sure when/if business will go back to usual. However, I still get requests from new customers daily, asking for photo sessions. I guess people can't wait and I hope your clients will find you again after you reopen. I recorded this video last year.
      As far as light. I love the combination of natural daylight and flash. It's great to complement each other, but I agree having your main light coming from one side looks good!

    • @adamnowak4172
      @adamnowak4172 4 года назад

      @@alexisrose4221 - "if I’m using artificial light should I be blocking out the natural?"
      It depends, we don't know, what "look" you want to achieve ;)
      If you plan to mix natural and artificial light, you must consider different color temperature of light source (daylight - noon 5500K, but "at "golden hour" it can be 3400K, strobe/flash - 5500K).
      If you want only artificial light, adjust exposure (ISO, shutter speed - not shorter then sync speed for your camera) with flash off to achieve "black frame" (you do not need to block all natural light in the room, only at pictures). Then switch on flash (main light), and adjust flash power to your needs (then second, adjust, third and so on).
      If you use constant light, it may be difficult or impossible (flashes/strobes are more powerful).
      Take a look at AdoramaTV channel, and videos "On set" (with Daniel Norton) - at almost every studio shoot he always presents how to start building light setup from black frame (no matter if its sunny day, and sun is visible in studio, or studio has no windows).
      Fenna - great job, keep going :)
      Babies & nb are not my type of photography, but it's plesure to see your great passion at this, and a lot of your great tips can be used not only at photography.
      99 Euro for all pictures in gallery? Yes, i know, its "additional fee" to your session fee, but I think it's something to rethink after this corona-crazy time (now it's not a good time to raise prices :/). If you retouch all (good) pictures, and clients had to choose: few pictures (in package) or 99 for all (ready) pictures, it makes sense (your work is already done, and if they don't choose extra pictures you "loose" time spent on retouching), but 99 Euro for more than 20 pictures of THAT quality looks like steal ;)

    For me, I take the responsibility on myself and say I didn't do a good enough job of explaining the process to them. I'm not saying you're doing anything wrong, but for myself I take the whole thing personally. I feel bad for them, realise I could have done a better job at serving them, but also stick very close to what I told them. One trick is to get them to repeat what they heard you say back to you, because we only really remember what we ourselves say, not what someone else says.
    Fenna please consider doing IPS and physical products, you're worth so much more than what you're charging! 🙏

      For quite some time now, I have been considering IPS. Just haven't gotten around to looking at pretty products and getting some demo's. Especially now with two energetic kids 24/7, time to think is scarce :) Also, time is scarce in general and IPS would take more time. Which is why I'm a bit reluctant to the whole idea. I love the beautiful finished products, but spending time with the clients showing/picking the products/ordering/packaging/shipping.... sounds almost impossible to fit into my current working hours.

      To get enough light in my photos without compromising on shutter speed or aperture. And my ISO is really not that high on a full frame camera. You can easily go a lot higher without getting noticeable grain in your photo is you expose your image right. On a crop camera this can be different.
