How to set up for a Newborn photo shoot - Photographing a baby boy and girl (BTS)

- In this video I'm showing you how I set up for a newborn session. I'm actually showing you twice, because first I'm setting up for a newborn photoshoot with a baby boy and later with a baby girl.
I'm a full-time photographer in the Netherlands and I'm planning on showing you a but more of my life as a photographer. Are you interested in photography? I'm planning on sharing videos in which I show you my typical work-week as a photographer. I will give you tips & tricks concerning photography, photo shoots, backdrops, studio props, camera settings (iso, aperture, shutter speed, white balance), photoshoot outfits, photoshoot make-up etc.
Bedankt voor het kijken! Ik ben een full-time fotograaf in Nederland en ik wil je graag iets meer laten zien over mijn werk als fotograaf. Wil je meer weten over (digitale) fotografie? IMPORTANT
If you are interested in photographing newborn babies yourself I would highly recommend you to first learn about photography in general. Master you camera, photograph in the Manual mode, learn about aperture, iso, shutter speed, white balance, light and composition. Take photos of your friends (adults or very patient older kids) and make sure you don't have to think about your camera anymore when photographing babies. Learn about editing as well. Please, don't experiment photographing Newborn babies without training. Attend a workshop by an experienced and professional photographer with an expertise in Newborn Photography. Learn about the anatomy of babies and invest in good quality cameras, lenses and props. Babies are extremely vulnerable and small and their safety and comfort should be your highest priority. Start with simple poses and make sure you know and understand that many 'pinterest poses' are composites. Please, don't try this at home. If you want beautiful photos of your own Newborn Baby, I highly recommend you to hire a professional and experienced photographer who is trained and specialised in Newborn Photography.

thank you for your video. I am happy to see that it is possible to make photo with only one speedlight in a big soft box, I thaugth that I need studio flash ....now I can buy a bigger softbox than mine.
You're welcome! I think with newborns you really only need one light source. The gentle shadows five the images depth. A big softbox really helps to diffuse the light and make it soft and it helps to let the light wrap around the baby

Hi Fenna,Thanks so much for sharing your videos! How long do you allocate for your newborn sessions? What type of material do you use for your bean bag back drops? I love your studio space! I am inspired by your videos to do my daughters cake smash. I am just starting out in photography!
You're welcome. I reserve 2 hours for a session, but I make sure I have an hour extra for when we need more time. I like buying knitted fabrics or very stretchy fabrics for my beanbag. Have fun with your daughter's cake smash!

May I ask where do you get the little baby wraps?
Thank you for watching the videos :) How did the session go? One month old can be a difficult age, since most of the time they won't sleep as much as a Newborn and can't keep their heads up on their tummy either. However, it's also a lovely age where you can make eye contact and might even get some smiles!
Fenna&Photography it went well! The baby was wide awake though but he gave me a lot of smiles and looks at the lens. I can see why it’s difficult to pose on tummy once they’re older.

Also, I had to cut my long fingernails because I didn’t want to scratch the baby lol

Amazing. Thanks forca great video. Just a quick question. If the baby is awake or unsettled do you have to wait until they are sleeping or settled?
I love taking photos of awake Newborns as well. I usually wrap them, so they feel comfortable and secure. If they don't feel great, the parents nurse, cuddle and hold the baby until they feel happy again!

I use a brand called Neutral or Ecover. It's without perfume or lost of chemicals

Usually it's about 23 degrees celsius in my studio :)
