I had one of these in 1992...err, rather I had 3 or 4 of these. I had to exchange the unit several times because of some technical problem that I didn't know at the time was faulty capacitors. The unit seemed to have a particular issue with the AC adapter jack going bad and just shifting it a little while playing caused the unit to shut off. It was SO disappointing because I LOVED that thing. It was just so far ahead of its time. The Lynx, Game Gear, and especially the Gameboy were stone age garbage in comparison. The display was marvelous for the time, but stuck pixels were another big issue and while it was the only active matrix LCD in a handheld, the contrast ratio wasn't so good. Still an amazing piece of early 90's tech.
As always, man, really enjoy your sense of humor, and these mod videos are always good times. That's awesome you saved a great retro console! I love playing handhelds.
You're the mastermind! I actually just found a PC Engine GT in a HARDOFF here in Nagoya a few days ago. But it didnt work with batteries apparently. Just the power supply.
Thank you, sir! Nice, im curious to know how much it was going for. I would pick it up if it was a good price. Shouldn't be difficult to get the batteries working again. Often it's related to bad caps like this one here👍🏼
Great video man thanks! purchased one about a year ago with bad capacitors, re capped and brought it back to life Ordered a IPS screen kit from eBay and although it was a pain to install (lack of instructions) but is a game changer, brighter colors and larger display. Had to trim the housing but it was worth it to have a beautiful screen Currently working on a rechargeable lithium battery pack, I’ll send links when it’s finished if you are interested in building your own
Ah yeah, removing surface mount capacitors can be a pain. I've had the best results by twisting them with pliers, but being careful not to pull up on them. Some say you should only use hot air, but then you have to worry about nearby components or the caps exploding from the heat. I've also ripped traces by using hot air but pulling on a cap that wasn't hot enough for the solder to melt. Good job on the GT, wish I had gotten one for myself to fix up back when they weren't quite as expensive!
Yes, i know exactly what you mean. I think clipping these straight through would have been the best plan of attack. Id also be a bit apprehensive about melting plastic components with hot air too.
I love this kind of videos, very impressive, I could not to do that myself! ^^' The GT is really great, but definitely too expensive for my pocket money when I was 12... But it's great to see that old consoles can be repaired even in 2023.
Hey Man, love your videos. I have a pc engine gt i recapped, and unfortunately it still doesn't work. At full brightness it has a white screen. At the lowest brightness its usually blue or greenish color. The cc503 capacitor pads are "shorted" i think The positive pad is grounded and the ground pad isnt grounded, but both are connected in circuit... as far as i can tell. its total amateur hour over here of course. I think one of my chips is fried... You seem to have worked on a few of these, any advise would be helpful...
Thanks for the kind words. Actually this was my first pc engine gt refurb and luckily it went well. The boards are so fragile and pads lift so easy it may be my last. I do love the feel of the chunky frame tho. It's hard for me to say. I would check traces and voltage etc. It often helps to take a break read up a little and get back at it when you are relaxed. Sorry not much help but good luck man👍🏻✨️
Very good video. Thanks. I would appreciate if u can give us the references of the tools used here to easily remove the capacitors. Thanks in advance! ^^
@@ScruffyLookinRGB no, not those my friend. Im talking about those small brushes you use to clean narow spots like the connectors of the controllers, the video cable output plug... Where can i find those brushes?
@@ScruffyLookinRGB yeah they are! 2 of the GT that i have recapped have had that same pad by the headphone jack pull up. Im still working on one of them cause i had 4 pull up 😭

Sounds like you really love your turbo express👍I'd like to mod one with an rgb rgb screen at some point. Thanks for sharing your story.

That is awesome man what a cool idea. I'd like to do an rgb mod on one of these one day as well. Look forward to seeing your finished product.
Nice work!! Always cool to see things brought back to full working order.
Thank you sir. Glad you agree with me ✌️

Another great tutorial. I still have never done a capacitor replacement on any of my handhelds.
Thanks man! You should try it on a junk one first.

Thanks for the kind words 🙏🏿 Im sure this is still not so cheap these days either but it is one beautiful handheld😍🙌
Great restoration job Scruffy!
Thanks dude 👍🏼
Great content as always! I loved watching this video since it reminded me of the famicom mod.
That means a lot since these are my favorite kinds of videos to make. Thanks Bau🙏
Remove six screws.. impressive 🙂Nice zoom footage and thanks for tips what to try to avoid when working project like this!
Thank you. Hope the tips serve you well.
I find it amazing you can still find capacitors for such an old device
We live in a wonderful world 🌎 ❤️
Great video. I almost repaired my GT. Still some problems. Sound is quite weak. And the 2 action buttons are not responding...
Usually, cap replacement will fix the button input and sound as well. Thank you🙏✨️

They should be down in the description did you see it?
Hello do you need to replace shield obligatory for look if the screen is working again or without Shield we can see this? Thank you
I'm almost positive you have to replace the shield.
Ok i go try thanks for the message ! 👍
Hi, where do you use to buy those tiny brushes my friend?
One is a flux pen, and one is a flux cleaner both are in the description 👍🏼

Its almost impossible to remove gt caps without pulling pads up. Ive done 3 so far and each has had pads rip regardless how careful
Really?! They are that fragile. I don't feel so bad now. Thank you 👌
