Thanks Tito for sharing this video. I have used it as a reference to replace the capacitors for my Turbo GT. However, just one additional suggestion, if one is using the electrolytic cylindrical capacitors, try to solder them keeping them parallel to the motherboard, otherwise there may be challenges while closing the handheld (especially , the 5 sound capacitors and the capacitors which would fall under the small attached PCB (Hu Card section PCB).

Something I find fascinating about the PC Engine GT/TurboExpress is how they were able to shrink the motherboard to fit in a portable form factor. The HuCards seemed to be well suited for it given how the original PC Engine console was already quite small compared to the Mega Drive and Super Famicom.
Thank Ronald! Really appreciate it buddy! It isn’t a very well known console due to its low sales records, but it really is a marvel of technology given the time it came out. Cheers!

Just found your channel and your video production is great!! I have been going through all your previous videos over the last couple of days. I do have one question or suggestion. Why dont you use a Hot Air Solder gun to remove the SMD capacitors? Seems that would be easier than cutting them down. Either way its great to see retro systems getting the love they deserve. Keep up the great work!!
I've been on a spree of buying and refurbing these machines for the past few months, I love them. I would just reinforce the point you made about cleaning the pads of any remaining electrolyte, as this can cause shorts and in worst cases blow the backlight circuit. Next you should consider a 3.5" RGB screen mod, this is one of the greatest mods for any handheld console IMHO, you get a larger and better quality picture and also from a cosmetic point of view looks better than stock.
I really want to do that mod but I’m holding off until someone releases an aftermarket shell for the console. I can’t justify cutting the original shell since the console is getting to be quite rare. I know there are some folks who are redesigning a custom shell to find the new screen. Can wait for that!! Cheers!
Thank you man! So glad you’re enjoying the videos!! Had I known this existed back then, I probably would have wanted one too! When I was a kid, I didn’t even know what the TG16 was, haha. It’s such a great console! Cheers dude!

Thank you buddy! I know it's really crazy to see all the competition Game Boy had over the years and how it came out on top in the end! Great to hear from you my friend!
Price, battery life, game library were all huge contributions to the game boy dominating the hand held market for well over 10 years. Gameboy originally launched and came out with Tetris. At that time, the tetris craze was in full swing in the US. Gameboys were very affordable. Many adults bought them just to play tetris while on the train to work, or at the doctors office... that kind of thing. Price and game library were probably neck and neck. It was adults buying the majority of these things for their kids. For the price of one Game Gear, or one Lynx, you could buy TWO gameboys and maybe even a game. If you had two kids.... you were buying them each their own game boy.. not a game gear to share, you know how well sharing goes over at that age. The library itself was really good as well. It’s pretty crazy! I was actually very surprised by the quality of the picture the LCD provided, it’s a lot better than the Game Gear. I really don’t have any desire to upgrade it, but if a kit came along that would allow me to upgrade it without modifying the shell and if it was reversible, i would consider doing it. Thank you for the comment David! Cheers buddy!
My dream handheld... too bad the whole endeavor is quite expensive. Between the games and the console, you're in for a few hundred dollars to get started.
That was great. Sad that a lot of this handheld in the 90's have got all this bad capacitor, but thankfully we can save it with brand new one. The PC Engine GT is at the same time a great and bad idea, because the PC Engine is the smallest console ever made (one I try to track, but their expensive ) so the idea to portalise it'snt stupid but the handheld market is not ready for that kind of hardware. Great stuff 🤘
Thank you Ace Bunny! And thank you for the comment! Always great to hear from you! Totally agree! It may not have been the best business decision by NEC, but I’m glad it exists. It may have been too ahead of its time and it just cost too much, tough to compete the the cheaper and more practical Game Boy at the time. Cheers!!
@@MachoNachoProductions That make me feel than we don't any have a handheld with the spirit of the og Game Boy, a intelligent low specs system affordable (less than 100€/$) for everyone with awesome games. thx for the video. I have a question I have done similar to you but I waited for sadly too long. I already got damage but is not really visible. Button one and two are not working. in essence, I can not use my GT anymore. I did not want to remove the grey rubber on the connection path on the pc engine gt to the buttons. Any suggestion on how I should proceed when the button connection is broken? Regards David
I have a pc engine gt that is completely dead, the capacitors have been replaced and it still won power on. what could be the problem? the fuse has been replaced as well.
Tito, do you plan on doing any of the screen upgrades on the Turboexpress? I have seen some out there online, but don’t know too much about them. It would be dope to see you try them out.
I really want to do this mod but I am hesitant because they all require cutting the shell extensively. I was hoping that either a no cut lcd mod would come out or an aftermarket shell will be made. It would break my heart to cut the shell since these are getting so rare and expensive. Finger crossed one of those things happen🤞. Cheers buddy!
@@MachoNachoProductions I’m a savage, bro! I don’t even care about that part, but the messed up thing is that I know that I should. But after all don’t you have two of them? Why not mod one and keep the OEM? Or maybe just fool us into thinking that you did it with some tricky editing and Hollywood magic? But seriously though, the thing is if you don’t show us the correct way to do it then that means that people like me will be flying blind and mess everything up, then we will have to go and find another perfectly good Turboexpress to chop up. Thereby subjecting even more consoles to destruction. So by you doing a tutorial, in actuality you are actually saving more shells out there from being needlessly butchered. I mean its the only choice really 🤷♂️
Haha true, I guess one could look at it that way. I remember seeing on Twitter that a guy was making some custom shells. I may need to reach out to him. Would love to upgrade the LCD!
@@MachoNachoProductions If you don’t want to cut up your own Turboexpress, you can always mod mine instead. I have no such qualms. By the way, keep us posted on that guy doing custom shells. I would love to upgrade mine if the quality was there.
I so badly want to get into this line of hobby but have no idea where to start. Where can I start? I have a soldering iron and a pretty decent knowledge of hardware.
Another amazing, amazing tutorial and video. Can I ask what your background in video making is? I’ve been running a personal website and youtube channel (under another name) that are about tutorials on building gadgets just like yours, but my video making skills are pretty much non-existent and I’ve been slowly learning as I go. Would love to be put in the right direction for learning all the incredible fundamentals you have down for video editing... angles, lighting, music, effects (like fog and RGB lighting), etc. Thanks for any insight!
Thank you! I’m mostly self taught with no formal training in videography. My best advice is to watch tutorials on RUclips, there is a wealth of great info! Channels like film riot are great resources! With time you will improve, I guarantee it, just gotta stick with it! Cheers buddy and best of luck!
Nice video! To make this a masterpiece now would be great to mod it replacing the LCD for an IPS screen, a rechargable battery and an everdrive :). is this possible? I mean, is there kits to modify this system the way I described?
I solved my issue: new speaker from console 5 and new start and select buttons from aliexpress, both more than fine. Sadly still my audio is kind of weak (on speaker). The unit was fully recapped by a professional modder using high quality caps... What else can I try? Volume pot, maybe? :(
Great question! The only reason I am skeptical about replacing the screen is because the only kit available requires you to cut the shell a lot. And because these consoles are so rare, I really don’t want to ruin the shell. Rather I want to preserve it as best as I can. Cheers William and happy new years!
Is cutting off those surface mount caps and ripoig them off the only way? I would be afraid I'd rip a pad off. Would a desoldering pump allow me to get those off without much trouble?
A hot air station like the Quick 957DW, liquid flux, and some kapton tape to protect anything you don't want to get warm / hot is the best way to do it. This way isn't horrible, but pay special attention to how he is doing this. Cut the can just above the plastic base, then split the plastic base and remove it and finally desolder the legs. Some people put a "spin" on this technique (no pun intended) and will twist the cans until the whole unit breaks off from the pads. Puts WAY more stress than necessary on the pads, and greatly increases your odds of ripping a pad off and damaging the motherboard. I say if your going to do this, use hot air. The 957DW I mentioned above is a $100 investment, but it has many applications and will make your work easier, safer and more enjoyable.
@@brandonkick Yeah thanks! Ive removed a few caps since I posted this, and this method works great. I've seen the twist method and it looks super scary.
I would love too! Sadly the kits available on the market require significant shell modding and cutting which I don’t want to do since the console is quite rare. If they ever release a “no cut” mod, I’ll definitely do it 😁

I know this is a niche market, but if you look at other similar channels you can see how much you can still grow if you keep up with this kind of quality content. ¡Gracias por hacer estos tiempos difíciles algo más llevaderos!
Thank you for the words of encouragement Jon! I really appreciate it dude! I will continue to make these videos! It make me really happy that you are enjoying them! ¡Muchas gracias por las amables palabras mi amigo! ¡¡Salud!!
Awesome dude. I would love to own one of these some day. Lemme know if you want to.sell the second one 😁👍. And again nice production man!
👍 Thank you Vincent! Cheers buddy!
Y’all had any luck tracking down replacement shells for these bad dogs? I haven’t been able to find one anywhere.
“Recently I purchased 2 PC Engine Turbo Express”. You sir, must be rich.
Hi, Tito, on occasion could you make us a tutorial for a pc engine gt lcd mode please ? Thk's !!
Again much appreciated video. Do you have a source on a kit of replacement screws? I am coming up empty 😢
thx for the video.
I have one and the screen and sound are non-existent. Will this fix it or might I need a new screen?
to desolder the smd capacitors.. do you think that it is important to use hot air too ? in addition to the cutting pliers ?
Would love to see a new screen on this
Me too!
Exemple le régulateur de tension principale? ce trouve ou ça pourrais être une étape pour trouve la panne
Désolé, j'utilise Google Traduction pour cela et je ne suis pas sûr de comprendre. Toutes mes excuses.
Beautiful! Great refurb!
Thank you dude! Cheers!
I always wanted one of those when I was a kid back in the day. Thanks for the healthy dose of nostalgia.
You’re welcome dude! Cheers!
Videos are awesome new sub!
Thank you!
Ugh, why didn't you get the SMD version of the kit?
wow this is a chunky portable console
Nice video! To make this a masterpiece now would be great to mod it replacing the LCD for an IPS screen, a rechargable battery and an everdrive :). is this possible? I mean, is there kits to modify this system the way I described?
Why didn't you install ceramic cookers?
Also, where can I download that intro track? It's great.
i have no idea what this is but im going to pick one up now hahaha
Haha definitely dude! You will not be disappointed! It's the Sega Nomad of the Turbografx 16! Cheers buddy!
Marvelous work!
I'd really need to buy a new speaker for mine but above all a new start and select button...
can anyone help?
Thanks :)
Anyone? :)
I solved my issue:
new speaker from console 5 and new start and select buttons from aliexpress, both more than fine.
Sadly still my audio is kind of weak (on speaker).
The unit was fully recapped by a professional modder using high quality caps...
What else can I try?
Volume pot, maybe? :(
great video! but why not replace the screen like with your game gear and lynx?
Great question! The only reason I am skeptical about replacing the screen is because the only kit available requires you to cut the shell a lot. And because these consoles are so rare, I really don’t want to ruin the shell. Rather I want to preserve it as best as I can. Cheers William and happy new years!
Any Idea what to do if Turbo buttons do not work anymore?
In 1990 this amazing technology exist?
I just know About western bar from casio 😭😭
Oui je vais voir pour vous envoyer quel que image, je pense également au cpu qui et peut-être hs mais comment savoir si c'est le cas ! Voilà merci
Ça m'a l'air bien! Au plaisir de vous entendre.
Use vinegar to neutralize the capacitor acid.
Thank you for the advice!! May have to open it back up. Cheers!
is there a ceramic cap kit?
Love your channel Tito. Why not put an IPS display in the unit ?
I would love too! Sadly the kits available on the market require significant shell modding and cutting which I don’t want to do since the console is quite rare. If they ever release a “no cut” mod, I’ll definitely do it 😁
@@MachoNachoProductions I don't blame you in that respect. This console and a Nomad are my holy grail handheld that I want to own some day. Love your channel.
Thank you RBKing 80🙏! So glad you’re enjoying the channel 😁
