  • A bunch of people sent me this study showing that combining bananas and berries together in a smoothie might not be the best combination if you want to maximize your health.

    The more stuff I watch and read, the more I realize I will drive myself crazy with all things. One thing I’ve always heard since I was a kid, is only eat melons alone. Lately it’s really big to put lemon in your grains to soak. Meanwhile the water we shower with is probably hurting us a bunch, Lord help us all!! lol

      Food combinations are real. But they only affect digestion. If digestion is strong enough, no issues.

      Agreed. There should be tips how to not poison our water with toxic chemicals (that people use daily is if it's nothing) instead of lamenting about smoothies. Everything toxic that you pour into the water adds up and will come back to you.. and if the water is to poisened to drink it, we will have other problems than Smoothie combinations.

      add a scoop of ice cream a glass of milk and a couple of snickers chocolate bars, mix it all in the blender and you get alittle piece of heaven ;)

    I’ve had a banana and wild blueberry smoothie every day since February. It’s helped significantly with my chronic illnesses. No one could tell me nothing bad about the combo except my body and she’s cheering me on at this point so…

    I put a frozen banana in my smoothie along with berries, beets, kale, spinach, chocolate protein powder, cocoa, flax meal and unsweetened plant based milk. This makes enough for about 3 to 4 days. It’s filing, chocolatey, and sometimes I can’t finish 1 serving at breakfast, so I have the rest for dessert after dinner. So I basically follow you, Dr. Greger, The Esselstyn’s, Dr. Fuhrman, Chef AJ, et al. As a 70 year old woman, I feel healthier now than I did 10 years ago. I’ve been plant based for almost 6 years now. (Wished I’d started earlier, but better late than never)! Thanks for your videos, they are quite informative! 🇨🇦

      @@Cinnamineral Hi, I use Botanica Perfect Protein, chocolate flavour. I have only been using it for a couple of months, so it’s “newish”. I quite like it. Before that I was using Vega.

      I am trying to eat Dr greger but am new to it .... do you know I eat all my grains from rolled oats so eat one and a half cup of dry oats (I cook them in the microwave but it is one and a half cup before I cook them, they do not soak up a lot of water, is that to much or is that what dr Greger means?? Any tips for a newby?? 😊

      It's just that your body will get a better benefit if you separate the bananas from the berries.

      @@Simnettnutrition bananas, and mixed spices, or .. In the morning oats and couscous and Mixed Spices (Cinnamon, Ground Coriander, Nutmeg, Allspice, Clove, Ginger...) Big teaspoon, and ground Black Pepper and apple and Dates and oranges and Cocoa etc. And then brown bread with peanut butter and Mixed Spices, and mustard seeds and a little bit of Cabbage and raisins and pumpkin seeds. And then dinner I have vegan curry and sweet potatoes and squash and onions and garlic and mushrooms and lentils or beans, et cetera. And 1 or 2 nori sheets, put that at the bottom and vegan curry. Or sometimes I do Mexican vegan burritos et cetera. Marmite, or yeast B12 🦠, teaspoon, every two weeks more or less, 500% !!!!

    5:47 I also had a phase where I felt completely lost in the nutrition-jungle and literally overanalized every single food and researched everything down the rabbit hole.
    And in the end I always felt even more confused and frustrated.
    It was like living hell

      Same here. It got to the point of literally what he said…resorting back to unhealthy foods because I didn’t know what to do. It was incredibly disheartening to learn up on healthy eating and begin to make changes only then to hear conflicting information and I’m “eating healthy in the wrong way”. And it never ever ends. Just eat healthy and don’t worry about it. The results speak for themselves.

      He already did...and he agrees...this is the only nutritionist I have seen who says otherwise...Dr Rhonda Patrick...Chris Gardner all agree and do not put banana in smoothies...I eat them by themselves...

    I’ve just read the study, albeit briefly. There are certain factors that stood out to me in which I can critique: first, the sample size was small, n=8, and a p-value test would be inappropriate to determine significance. The other thing about a small sample size is that outcomes occur by chance.
    My second critique would be that it was a crossover study, and each participant took 3 different smoothies; (1) banana + almond milk smoothie, (2) berries + almond milk smoothie, (3) dairy milk + capsule. Of the 3 smoothies, nothing was said about calorie, fat carbs protein, and other differing nutrients from the 3 smoothies which could easily act as confounders and thus causing a difference in the polyphenol absorption.

      A small sample size is actually not uncommon in physiological research where the effect size is large. If the variance is small and the effect size is very large, then you can determine statistical significance from relatively smaller samples. For example, if I give eight people methamphetamine and all their blood pressure increases massively, I can say there was a statistically significant increase in blood pressure in response to the drug.

    I agree with you that most people shouldn’t stress about this. But I *usually* eat bananas and berries together, and I like strategizing things like this in my life. So I think I will make a change, and will try to avoid combining them. Same as I make a point of combining turmeric and black pepper, and combining flax and something with vitamin C. I can add this to the list of things I make sure to pair up (or not pair up).

    This study made me think of rewatching the series Century of The Self which is on youtube on adam curtis’ channel. It’s in part about the history of public relations and how the general public get duped, conditioned or convinced of things. I’m not really saying this study is faked or manipulated, just that there really are teams of people employed to confuse us the general public, in subtle ways, as doubt and confusion demotivates people so that they stick with the ‘popular view’. And that popular view is the one that’s we’ve been conditioned into! Sorry if that’s a bit deep, but the alarm bells in this study made me think of it. And by the way two of the people I definitely 100% trust are on this channel, thanks D&C 😊😊

    Thank you for especially the second part of this video. I studied nutrition and think stuff like this is interesting but on the flip side, it is easy to get caught up in the weeds and get really discouraged. I was a little nervous going into the video because I can get sucked into the minutia sometimes but I was still intrigued and it made me feel better when you provided your own balanced take.     I have oatmeal with 🍌 & 🍓🫐🍒 everyday. We can take the study into consideration. However, the group was small(19), only males, no cross section of diet varieties, funded by Mars Inc, etc. Too many variables and lacking variables to draw a clear conclusion at this time. And you’re absolutely right. We can drive ourselves crazy with information overload. I think if we eat a wide variety of whole plant foods, we will be 👍

    For those like me who have a high metabolism, drinking banana and berry smoothies on a regular basis made the difference for reaching the recommended BMI, along with resistance training. Good to learn that bananas are one of the highest fruits in terms of calories. I also added pumpkin or sunflower seeds and raw oatmeal. Sometimes peanut butter powder.

    Thank you for explaining this study. I won't stop having my banana and berry smoothies, but I will try to mix things up a bit more. Maybe have some chia pudding with berries sometimes and maybe sometimes not have berries in smoothies where I use bananas. Berries are really expensive in Finland and it would be nice to get the most out of them. But as you mentioned, it was a small study etc. so not too concerned about this. Just something that is good to know and sometimes seperate those if wanting every bit of nutrition from the berries.

    Oh my! I put both bananas and dates with my berries in my smoothies! I am not changing. One study does not convince me. I'm waiting for the other studies that prove this study wrong or another one that backs it. One study? Bah humbug!

    Hi Derek, thanks for the info. I think I will exclude bananas from a berry mixture whether it be a smoothie or bowl based on this study. You've mentioned looking at the absorption impact of foods before, eg. adding pepper to turmeric to increase absorption, so taking the same consideration with bananas makes sense.

    Ugh people are always chasing every last nutrient in every single meal. Let’s just all chill 😂 this might be important for folks who have one serving of fruit and veg a day but for us vegans who eat mostly of all plant based, I’m pretty sure this little thing is nothing to worry about.     Good job critically applying this study's info. You are 100% correct, understand the science and apply it. A single study is a good thing to start us thinking, but certainly isn't definitive. I also love that you highlight the limits of the study and possible conflicts of interest.

    Rofl. Well, if I have to have my smoothie without bananas, my flavonol absorption would go to ZERO because there's no way I'm having a smoothie without my bananas. And, yes, watch for a cocoa based flavonol supplement to come out in the near future citing that they're even better for you than a smoothie. Mars is totally trying to diversify right now. That's my theory, anyway. They may even have known that frozen bananas would yield a more dramatic result for the exact reason you mentioned.     Cooking deactivates the PPO, which is great because my go to banana and berry meal is with oats. I cook the oats, then add banana, walnuts and cocoa, cook again, let cool, then mix in tons of blueberries. Similarly, for a smoothie, you could cook a bunch of bananas and freeze them in ice cub trays or store in jars in the fridge. We mainly add banana for the minerals, fiber, and sweetness. The berries are the part that pack all the vitamins sensitive to heat.

    Very sensible. Thanks for passing it on. They really do make a smoothie delicious though. I'd switch to mangoes but I'll wait till they do a study.

    I have always had my smoothies with a banana or two. Usually frozen bananas but not always. I think I will try it without the bananas here and there. I've recently found out that some cancers are fueled by glucose, and I noticed I usually intake a lot of carbs so I will be cutting out some carbs from my diet.
    I did look into a keto diet to get around the glucose issue, but looking more into a keto diet, you're still producing a good amount of glucose from fat, so the whole analysis paralysis comes into effect here haha.

    This is UPSETTING but useful to know. It might legitimately change the way I have smoothies! I mostly consume frozen fruit because fresh berries are so expensive and go moldy really fast. I am bummed out that a banana can undo some of the goodness in the wild blueberries I put into my smoothies! 😭

      I'm with you on this, Ericaaaaaaaaaa. I'm not going to "worry," but if I can do something "really good " and just as easily do something "even better," why not pick the "even better" thing? It may not always be convenient for everyone, or even for me, so I do get Derek's point that we shouldn't let the perfect be the enemy of the good, but starting tomorrow I'm just going to eat my bananas later than I eat my blueberry-topped chia bowl. :)

      Now that plant based vegan diets are becoming so popular, I wonder if processed food companies like Mars want to cast doubt on some healthy habits, so some people might do what Derek warned against, just throw their hands up and think they can’t do anything right when going plant based, so they grab Mars junk food. Mars is a terrible unethical company - they do horrific animal testing for their cat and dog food. (Evo, Cesar, Eukanuba, IAMS, Nutro, Pedigree, Royal Canin and more). If you follow a cruelty free lifestyle and don’t buy products that were tested on animals, Mars and all their products are out.

    Mars inc is also heavily in the veterinary world and own pet food companies and veterinary practices. After hearing they were behind the study I am now thinking there’s a reason the results came out the way they did.

    I was also wondering about the difference between just ripe bananas and those that have ripened longer and then you mentioned they used freezer bananas which seems to break the banana down even further. Great summary and I agree with your decision to keep eating bananas in your smoothies!

    I rarely mix bananas with berries because they overpower the flavor and I want to taste the berries! Blend them with silken tofu instead. So creamy and delicious!

    When I first saw this study, my first thought was what your reaction would be 🙂 Given that I have about 400 grams of blueberries in my smoothie, I'm not worried about getting enough nutrition from them 🙂

      @@donatina1987I use 200 Grams of frozen berries, 100 grams of frozen mango. Here in Germany 300g of frozen berries/ mango will cost about 3-4€ organic. I also add 60 Grams of hemp seeds, 6 medjool dates and 1-2 bananas.

    Thanks for breaking down the limited study.
    Basically, the study of berries & bananas, it was not worth a "crap".
    As a Raw vegetarian,🥭🍍🍌🍋🍊🥑🥥🥬🥦🍉🧄🍏 I find most "food" studies to be very biased and subjective to degree of investigators intellect.

    The only reason I would leave a banana out of my smoothie is to reduce the calories that time around. I do like bananas when I have smoothies though for muscle recovery and berries bring so much flavor.

    I agree that we should NOT overthink things! Just eat whole food plant based. If it comes straight from the ground, eat it! Lol I will continue banana and berry smoothies (and nice cream!) Can't even have a smoothie without 🍌 anyway. Thanks for an interesting video!

    I have long preferred mangos as my base fruit instead of bananas, and I add blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and cherries. I then add 2 TB of chia seeds and a little stevia. Also, I do add hot water (heated not to boiling in kettle) if all the fruit is frozen... it's still cold, just not as icy. I love it!
    If I am doing a green, protein smoothie, I love just using frozen cherries as the fruit, with nut butter, hemp seeds, & chia for creaminess. I add a little stevia for extra sweetness.

    totally agree with you….studies can be manipulated and too many factors at play. At the end of the day, common sense tells me if it’s a whole food, it’s not going to do damage to your body.

    I will continue to eat bananas and berries in my steel cut oats.
    I eat high flavenoid foods several times a day.
    And on some days i use dates instead of bannna to sweeten my oats.
