      Yeah, once your gut microbiome has adapted to the new diet - which doesn't take long, a couple of weeks - then it takes care of the secondary digestion. - So this guy has a routine physical from the doctor, and as they finish, he tells the doctor. "One thing I've been wondering about is my flatulence. For a while now, I've been farting frequently. They're odorless and don't make a sound, but still. Any idea what could be going on?" The doctor is writing in the chart and doesn't look up, but says, "Not sure, but the first thing is to check your hearing." :)

      @@G-rig6969 Of course, in the US the "normal" fiber intake is WAY too low. Less than 3% of Americans even get the minimum recommended daily amount of dietary fiber. The percentage of American men, ages 14-50, who consumed at least the minimum daily recommended amount of fiber? 0%. It's worth noting🤔that if these foods give you symptoms, it's worth working with an RD who has done the Monash University FODMAP training. You don't want to cut out any more foods than this without guidance, as it's easy to cut out too much and cause nutritional deficiencies. Monash has an RD finder/locator online as well as a course for patients.

He recommended lab work that detects mast cell activity to see if that's part of the equation. I'm glad this issue is addressed in (American) conventional medicine and I look forward to more research on the topic. Thanks for sparking that conversation! And I really appreciate all the very useful and accurate information you're able to share here regarding gut function in terms of biochemistry, biome, and behavioral activity. Put 2-3" of water in the bottom and set the IP to "ZERO" and let it run through it's cycle. They come out sooooo much better than steaming on the stove. Also, if cooking lentils the soaking/rinsing is a great tip, but also rinsing them again after cooking will also help so much!!!

    Great video. I especially like that you mentioned how although fructans in garlic/onion isn't immediately digestible by us, that the microbiome (at least a healthy one) will take care of this. I'm in the camp of my microbiome went to shit about 10 years ago in my mid 20's when I was under a period of extreme stress, eating a lot of processed and gluten rich foods, and taking a lot of antibiotics. Suddenly I was having negative responses to wheat, garlic, onion, and most nuts. I went from a lover of garlic, onion, and wheat to not being able to tolerate any of it and showing allergic to nuts on blood tests.
    It's gotten a little better over the years, but I definitely think my shift in microbiome and leaky gut led to the development of the inability to eat these types of foods. This is such a complex issue though and I feel science hasn't even begun to understand it. But this definitely tracks with the overall theme we're seeing become more prevalent in nutritional science and overall health.... Taking care of the gut microbiota is KEY.

    Thanks for this video. Been following for awhile and take alot tips from your videos often. Super helpful! This couldn't come at a more perfect time. Been vegan for roughly 2 years or so now and have had issues in this department most of my adult life, especially when I was vegetarian and vegan. I recently went to the doctor and met a nutritionist who was suggesting a Low FODMAP diet to figure out what is going on. I have been doing it for a week now. The stuff you are talking about hits on some of the stuff I learned while on the diet. The FODMAP diet is limiting and I am hopeful to figure out what my triggers are when I start reintroducing things. I miss garlic, avocado (one that is an issue that you missed) and onion. I also put a pause on my protein powder too. Also really forced me to do less protein too, which I know you have talked about not obsessing over. I was trying to do 200 grams at 6'2 and 210 roughly. Now I am like just trying to hit 90 while still being active, from a nutritionist's direction. Wish me luck! lol

    • @Simnettnutrition
      @Simnettnutrition  Год назад +3

      Yes, these are definitely all high FODMAP foods that I highlighted and tried to give some lower FODMAP options. The problem with those is if you look at lists online they seem to be all over the place. So I just targeted some that are well known and seem to be the culprit for man. I've read that avocado when not consumed in excess is a lower FODMAP food, but I don't really know for sure. Protein powder is a tough one as it also has lots of stevia in it too while previously thought to have no effect on the guy, is now believed to disrupt communication between different microbes in certain people. I'll probably end up doing a 5 MORE Foods video, but I'll see. Don't want to scare everyone off. ;) Thanks for the detailed comment. Yes, I know about the less protein, but when looking back I built so much of my physique just being in a surplus while eating pretty low protein and high carb. Good luck Ryan.

    Thanx for this helpful video 😊
    Another thing that can help with digestion and gas is eating more probiotic stuff, like fermented soy, miso paste, and other fermented foods.
    And even pop some probiotics pils from time to time, especially in acute situations.
    When you are a vegan bodybuilder, it can be very challenging sometimes. Cause you eat a ton of beans, soy, peas and all the good stuff 😄

    I didn''t know these foods can cause gas and bloating. What I like in your approach is you explain stuff, give some tips and trick, try this, look at that but don't limit yourself to quick solutions only - always go for the root of problem. This is very important to remind on every step especially now - era of quick fixes. Love your input in education. You are great :D

    I've found that eating gassy foods more often helps to actually reduce gas. I read somewhere long ago that many gassy foods have enzymes in them to help you digest them. They only stay in your body for about a day. So eating them daily helps to reduce gas after the first day.

    • @Simnettnutrition
      @Simnettnutrition  Год назад +1

      Oh yeah, definitely. Ginger tea is great! Peppermint tea is an interesting one. I have been researching it (one of the many rabbit holes I went down for this video) and while it calms and relaxes the muscles of our digestive tract, this can also include the upper part of it. So much so that it can relax the esophogeal sphincter which usually stops stomach acid and partially digested food from coming back up and can cause heart burn in some people. I've never experienced this and felt like it always helps with any discomfort, but because of that caveat I left it out. Enteric coated peppermint capsules seem to be the safest bet, but obviously not as convenient as the tea. Great suggestions!

      @@Simnettnutrition yes be careful of peppermint. My mother had gastroparesis and a hernia so I gave her a cup of peppermint tea. I was so sure it would help her stomach and I thought it was going to kill her with severe pain so careful if you have certain stomach issues! I kept apologizing to her and she said I knew you didn't mean to kill me. lol

    Great vid 👍 pressure cooking is ideal for dried beans/lentils and a lot of multicookers have that setting thankfully. Urad dal (the black type in particular) is my go to. I just can't get along with red lentils 😀

    • @Simnettnutrition
      @Simnettnutrition  Год назад +1

      Yes, Urad Dal is a great one for being fairly low in those gas forming components. I found mixed information on if pressure cooking really does reduce the oligosaccharides, so didn't include that. I think it is nuanced. It seems like it does for some foods but does a worse job at reducing them than boiling with other foods. It makes some sense since the cooking water is often discarded when boiling... but like I said in the video, at the expense of some nutrients though.
      Thanks for watching, I will be sure to pick up some Urad Dal myself!

      Thank you. In theory it seems great but I haven't heard of too many people getting great results from it. I think it takes a long time. I know it creates glutamate in the brain which is a very excitatory amino acid and some people have felt it increases feelings of anxiousness. I guess it depends on the individual.

    The absolute worst for me was pre-ground flax seeds. The ones you buy at the store I think are often slightly spoiled, since they spoil quickly once they're ground. I was a mess, and it's horribly embarrassing. It was shortly after I went vegan too, and it almost made me give up because I didn't know what the problem was for a while.
    Hopefully that helps someone. 😕

    Thanks. Lots of good tips, though one I disagree with (last point below):-
    1. A simple thing like a too tight belt while eating may promote a feeling of heaviness, akin to indigestion.
    2. Cooking onions well makes them trouble free for me, unlike raw or undercooked. If not able to tolerate raw Dr. Greger suggests chopping onions fine, and crushing garlic, then waiting 10 minutes for the alliinase to get converted to alliicin then cooking. I cook with water and steam, no oil, but boiling onions well cooks them fine, no need to fry. I steam pre crushed garlic along with vegetables and can then tolerate it. Water sauteeing can brown onions if desired.
    3. Eating while standing or walking can lead to hasty therefore not well chewed eating.
    4. Animated conversations at meals too, like 3 above.
    5. Chewing well and slowly is easier if not distracted by tv while eating.
    6. Cooking cruciferous vegetables properly then eating them fresh right away helps. I'm not sure but I suspect storing them (cooked) for a while before eating may somehow affect their digestibilty for those sensitive to them.
    7. Excessive spices especially chillies or fresh ginger could cause discomfort while digesting.
    8. Finally I feel we should beware of excessive exercise after a meal. At most a gentle stroll would be safe, not a brisk walk or anything more. I find just sitting around, even sitting back and reading or chilling out or RUclips is fine. Strenuous exercise after a meal could even be dangerous as in cramps while swimming: the body needs the blood to be available around the digestive tract; a need for more than usual blood in the muscles of the limbs at that time conflicts with that: this seems intuitively logical. Yes, last two words 🙂🙃

      Yes, I also definitely agree with you on the movement part. If I am a little bloated and go for a walk it can get so bad that I can hardly breathe due to the amount of gas in my stomach.

    Good video. I'm having a torrid time of it at the moment. Currently on a gym cut/elimination diet trying to figure it out. Lots of reflux, lots of gas up top and down below. I've been dairy-free, gluten-free, sugar free and grain-free for 10days and still getting horrible symptoms. Living off chicken, white fish and veg. Trying to figure out what vegetables I can buy en mass to put with all my foods is a real struggle. Wish I could just have the carrots, peas, cauliflower and broccoli mix that everyone else has!

      Did you get tested for Sibo or gastritis? Maybe a blood test would be great too to check for iron,B12,vitaminD,thyroid health.. oh and by the way carrots are ok to eat:) gut issues can be extremely frustrating, and focusing too much on food doesn't help with the stress which in turn worsens symptoms. I personally try to focus on what I gain rather than miss out on, and thank goodness there is so much variety in the world of produce that it really makes things accessible and doable.

    I did a reverse elimination diet and found out soy was causing my horrible symptoms. Not even only gastrointestinal symptoms but I also had bad sinus allergies at the time. Now, I will only occasionally eat soy (if it seems worth it). I also can only do fermented protein powders like pea otherwise it makes me sooo bloated.
