    To call this a review is an understatement. You covered all the important points and then opened the thing up. Props to you and the dedication you put in. I own this same sub, havent ever used it at a gig as most of my weddings are about 60 ppl tops. Bought it because of its size at a steal like 2 years ago, would fit my small car back then perfectly. Perfect sub for the price range and portability.

    I keep hearing everyone call these beginner subwoofers. I currently have the Maui 44G2 which are absolutely incredible. They beat the old Evolve 50Ms that I had. I just ordered a pair of 2 of these ELX200 18SPs. Was hoping to stack my Maui 44G2s on top. Wouldn't these supplement the sound? Also what are your thoughts about 4 of these for outdoor events? Biggest incentive for these were definitely the Quicksmart App control. Super convenient & intuitive

    I have the 12" (passive) version, which has the same enclosure thickness of 15 mm. The magnet on the 12" woofer is also the same. My speaker also has max 400 Watt cont. power handling. For the 12" subwoofer size, these are great values...
    For a 18" sub, it is very weak. I had a 18" subwoofer, which was made from 18mm plywood and had a speaker of real 1000 W RMS. This was a 25 years old bass reflex box from the 90's.
    To sum up, I recommend the 12" variant, because that is as good as it should be. However among 15"/18" sub boxes, this box is a low-end product with weak performance. For 18", I would go for the EKX/ETX series or other manufacturers like dB Tech.

    Thanks for the tear-down, very informative. Unlike most other pro audio manufacturers, Electro-Voice inflates their peak power ratings by a factor of four. That makes the amp module in this 1200W peak sub comparable to a 300W RMS power amp, driving an 8-ohm speaker. To EV's credit, their speakers are more efficient than most of their competitors, which accounts for this sub's 132db peak SPL rating. I wouldn't count on that much thump outside of a narrow band around 60 Hz, especially in Club mode. Widest low-end frequency response appears to be Music mode, though you'll need to crank up the volume to fully appreciate it. One huge advantage of these EV subs is their remarkably light weight, only 64 lbs, the lightest 18-inch pro audio sub around.

      EV provides you with 3 performance values.
      1. Continuous (aka RMS)
      2. Program power (2x cont.)
      3. Peak power (4x cont.)
      I think that the program power is the one we should focus on in case of full-range speakers. This means real music without compression, EQ and other modifications. It is applicable for full-range use, when drum peaks are followed by much quieter mid-high parts.
      Continuous is usually tested with pink noise. This is applicable for subwoofers, because that is low-passed from the full-range. It is not full-range music, but parts of the music with high level of low frequency peaks.

    • @FallenStarFeatures
      @FallenStarFeatures Год назад +1

    I think EV has hit this line out of the park! Because of back issues I have been looking for a light subwoofer to pair with one QSC K8.2 to make a micro system. I have a QSC K Sub but it is too heavy at 70+ pounds. I tried a Fishman Sub300 which is 35 pounds but its 8 inch woofer and 300 watts wasn't enough. QSCKS112 at 63 pounds, great sub but too heavy. New Bose SUB2 is excellent at 52 pounds and goes down to 37HZ. But at $1,200 too expensive for what you get. Gee for $1,500 you can get a KS118! So the winners in my search were RCF 702 42 pounds and the EV200EXL-12SP. Both 42 pounds, both 129dB peak, both go down to 40HZ. RCF 702 is $150 more. Feeling like Goldilocks, this one too weak, this one too heavy. The winner was the EV! Hits as hard as the RCF. Club mode is especially noticeable difference. I know your review was about the bigger EXL-18, but they have much in common. Construction, amp, and App.What sold me was the great App! Thanks for the great review.

      Hi Mike. No, I haven't used the EKX-15SP. It is a higher end sub than the ELX series, so I imagine they would be pretty punchy for their size. I suppose it depends on the type of gigs and tyoe of music you'll be using them for. Sorry I can't help more with that one. I think the EKX might be a more long term investment because it's a higher end sub. You could always add an 18 inch later if you need a little extra low end base.

      I haven't had a chance to test them out yet in that kind of enviroment, but I have heard that they limit output when they get too hot. I haven't tested that myself yet though. It's part of what makes them great for newer DJs as they are well protected. If they are getting hot to the point that they limit, then they might be under powered for that type of enviroment. You might want to look at something with a little more output so that you don't have to push them to their limits in hot weather to get the performance you need. Maybe the EKX or ETX. I think those would do better for outdoor events anyway. All depends how hard you need to push them for your needs.

    • @barnaczukor4235
      @barnaczukor4235 Год назад

      Eminence is the oem woofer for ELX200 line. This is a weak subwoofer considering its size of 18". It is the low-end of Eminence woofers.
      B&C or 18Sounds would make an improvement. But their woofers cost 5x more than the oem Eminence Alpha woofer does.
      If the subwoofer was a B&C 18PS100, the speaker would cost 2-3 times more. This is why it is ELX200 and not ETX sub that the speaker uses a cheap Chinese Eminence woofer instead of a better one.

I know sometimes it can be an issue between pairing through your phones bluetooth settings and pairing through the app. I don't recall exactly, but I'll have a look at mine when I get a moment. Sometimes apps can be picky about whether you're paired through the phones bluetooth settings or not. Have a look in your setting and try unpairing, or pairing the sub through "bluetooth setting" then see if the app works. I hope that helps, and as mentioned, I'll try it out on mine when I get a chance to see if I can help further. Let me know if that helps. Ahh, I see. About the only way would be to wire it up yourself. Splice into the speaker wires. But I don't know if I recomend it. Depends how inclined you are. Seems a bit over powered for that system though.

    Thanks for the video. Considering the ELX 12 tops and 18 subs vs same in the EKX so this is very helpful. Also have a compact truck that I may place these in the back seat. Nice to see the practical applications.
    Thanks for sharing the wattage and spl rating. I have not been able to find any documentation for EV products stating wether PEAK or RMS. How did you verify the wattage is peak?

    • @back2djing873

      You're very welcome. I'm glad you found it useful.
      As far as the wattage rating, I contacted EV support and asked them. They told me the 1200 watt is peak, and they also stated that RMS is usually around 50% of peak rating.
      From my own experience, RMS is usually slightly more that 50%. Hope that helps.
      Also, side note: EV support was very quick and helpful. They have a live chat function on their website, and through that, they put me directly in contact with the right people to answer my questions.

      @@back2djing873 Thanks buddy. I’ve heard the same re: RMS usually being 1/2 of peak. And sounds like EV customer service was on point.
      Again, great reviews.

      @@georgethedj4946 I believe also, generally as a rule, if a manufacturer only states one wattage rating, It's most often the peak rating unless they state otherwise. Of course that's not a guarantee, but kind of an industry standard.

      EV peak power ratings are four times the RMS power, making this amp module 300W RMS. One look at the size of the power amp module in this unit is all you need to confirm that estimate.

    If you are to add a 1000 W RMS subwoofer, the enclosure will fall apart. This box was designed for this cheapo semi-chinese woofer, which is Eminence Alpha in practice.
    You can add a better woofer to have slight sound pressure improvement, but you should know the limits.
