Jennifer Hudson is one of a kind. I am no expert in the music world but I'd like to think that I know good talent. This young lady is so versatile it's unbelievable, she makes an old song new and makes a new song sound like you have heard it before. This must surely be a gift from God. Honestly! How many singers can just plant their feet firmly on the ground and sing without even dancing and you are mesmerized by it all. "Jennifer Hudson is a rare gem". Blessings!

Regarding this specific performance, I certainly think she'd be better off to focus in standards instead of new material, but she went at this all wrong. The lyric slip "Amongst" instead of "Among" is pretty embarrassing. And then, she got louder and louder, oddly. It got crazier, and by the end, she was gesturing to the audience as if the lyric was about loving the studio audience of her talk show,instead of being sung to a romantic partner. With a simple accompaniment of acoustic bass and piano, certainly a calmer performance would have been better. It's good to reach a peak, in song. I love a huge, dramatic finish. But the problem with Hudson is that she starts out at the end,and has nowhere to go except into crazy-land. I think she is too surrounded with people telking her she's better than she is, and that is a shame, because she won't learn and grow. I think she idolizes Jennifer Holliday, and so do I. I could talk for hours about Ms Holliday. I firmly believe she is the greatest voice of all-time. To be clear- Jennifer Holliday is the greatest singer to ever live on planet earth. I would love to see Jennifer develop into a singer in that class. But she certainly isn't there yet, and if she really wants to,she could get there.
You wrote all that for an impromptu perfomance.She can walk into a recording studio & sing the hell out of this song since she‘s one of the best vocalists out here.Most songwriters/producers would love to work with her.But you don‘t have the same attitude for Kelly Clarkson who butchers most songs in her show.

She always comes off as a lousy impersonation of the great Jennifer Holliday, to me. Except, Hudson's voice is too "huffy", too much breath in most moments, and she just isn't a mature singer. She has potential, but, she just isn't there yet. She needs both- more restraint, and more fire.
