      I was taught that elderberries had to be cooked to remove the poisonous substance. I make the syrup because of this, but if it’s safe to make oxymel, I’m on it! Much easier.

    Hi Terri thank you for the recipe. I've just strained off the blackberries and tasted a spoonful, of the liquid, it tastes very strongly of vinegar can I add more honey to it to make it more palatable?

    • @DanusIrishHerbGarden
      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  2 года назад +1

      Of course. Add the extra honey - maybe infuse some more blackberries in the honey and then add to the vinegar. If no more blackberries are available, then just add honey and leave to stand for a couple of weeks.

    Hello, I made this about a month or so ago and tried it tonight. This is delicious. I took a teaspoon for my throat and it is lovely. I could sit down and have a small glass of this in the evenings. I made two jars of this and haven't strained one of them yet. How long can it be left before it needs to be strained and placed in a new jar? Thank you.

    • @DanusIrishHerbGarden
      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  2 года назад +1

      i would strain it now - it should be alright being in vinegar and honey, but the fruit is soft and it would just give a better looking result if not left overly long. x Glad you enjoyed it!

  • @juliecole3861
    @juliecole3861 10 месяцев назад

    I did this with garlic although only about 1 tablespoon of honey but found that it fermented and I was concerned with the glass breaking. Do you get this (fermentation) with fruit in vinegar and honey?

  • @anastrawberry8047
    @anastrawberry8047 2 года назад +2

    Hello Terri! This might be a silly question, but just making sure because it's the first time I'm going to make oxymel...do you wash the blackberries before, right? because yours seemed to be kind of wet.
    I'm asking this because I don't know if you wash and then you have to let them dry because the water droplets might introduce pathogens in the mix, or you can use the blackberries when still wet?
    Thank you!!! 💖
    (P.D. I come here from your today's video on blackberries vinegar 😉)

    • @DanusIrishHerbGarden
      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  2 года назад +2

      Usually I would only pick soft fruit like Blackberries on a dry day, but we are very short on dry days at the moment. No, I never wash anything (other than roots). These looked wet because they were a bit wet so I used them straight away. Don't worry about pathogens, just enjoy Nature's bounty xxx😄

    • @DanusIrishHerbGarden
      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  2 года назад +2

      They will but perhaps in a less potent way. Like anything tamed or domesticated, they may have lost some of their power but certainly should be good for decent cuppa.

I know the honey is great, just checking on the process.. Also, keep in the kitchen, but does it need to be kept in the dark or can I leave it on my counter? Hi Tracy, babies would not usually be given honey until they are at least one. I believe it is because of the enzymes in honey - they can upset a baby's digestive system. If you would like a winter remedy for a baby, take a look at the video for making garlic oil - its' very safe and effective.
