Love Your Lungs: How To Make a Potent Mullein Infusion
I am often asked how one uses mullein for its lung supportive properties. Today, I am glad to share with you this new video lesson on how to prepare a simple, yet, powerful preparation with the fuzzy leaves of mullein (Verbascum thapsus).
Mullein has a long history of use for supporting the respiratory system. It tones and soothes (demulcent) lung tissue into a healthier state to be used after illness (bronchitis), or insult (smoke, smog, etc); or during an illness: helpful in bronchitis, laryngitis, coughs (anti-tussive) (anti-spasmodic), and asthma.
Mullein is an expectorant, which means it helps bring out unwanted phlegm. All of this while having a calming effect!
This worthy, wild and gentle herbal ally is available to us worldwide. Who knows, some may be growing right outside your door.
Please view our other mullein videos where I show you how to ID, harvest and find this supportive friend. Links to those are here: • MULLEIN Deep Dive: Lun... , • MULLEIN Deep Dive (Pt.... , • MULLEIN Deep Dive (Pt....

A random lady walked up to me and told me she had a cough for months that wouldn't go away and tried mullien and it cleared it right up. She was so happy she wanted to tell anyone who would listen. I didn't know her and immediately took is as a sign to remember the herb. Sometimes God shares information via strangers.
Thank you for sharing this. Good to hear!
She may have been an angel ❤️
The lord is so good to us,thank you.
Had a coworker one time that insisted on working even though she had pneumonia. You could hear her (trying to) breath from the next room. I gave her some Mullein and told her how much to use. She said that she didn't believe in "all that herbal hooey" but took it anyway.
Later that night (when she should have been going to the hospital) she got desperate and made some tea and drank it.
She came in to work the next morning raving about how well and how quickly it cleared her lungs up. She's been after me for more herbal remedies ever since.
Remember, before "modern medicines" all you had was foods, plants and herbs.

I work as a nurse in an area of the country where a lot of our patients live away from the city, and have a semi off grid lifestyle. I've had patients for years talk about the benefits of mullein tea, even comparing it's beneficial effects on some infection diagnosis (usually ear infections or a bronchial issue) to some of the strongest antibiotics we would prescribe for those conditions. And most often, when we follow up with our rural patients they have quick improvement in their symptoms and are remarkably in better condition on their follow up visit (when we can get them in for those :D ).
Thanks, Jim, for your comment. Good to hear this!
Retired nurse here. Asthmatic w/massive lung damage from pulmonary emboli. Then rare lung cancer requiring removal of a lobe. After surgery I couldn't breathe. They would test me and then do nothing but order more tests. I was to the point I was looking for a hospice. (Large city w/specialized lung hospice.) After watching Dina's other video about mullein I tracked down some mullein tea. After a week I could breathe again. I got to the point I was forgetting to use my inhalers. Mullein is nothing but miraculous. I still drink the tea and always will. There is no lung patient that is too far gone that mullein won't make more comfortable. I swear by it.

And it’s grounded in knowledge and not the latest non herbalist DIY’s. It matters.
My husband when he was a firefighter- had to go into a house without an air tank because they were out. (This was maybe 2 decades ago) He inhaled a lot of smoke and toxic fumes. An native elder taught us about the herb. He was told to smoke it - NOT RECOMMENDED FOR MOST- so it would make him cough up the crap from the fire. He then drank the tea for several weeks after coughing up all the chemicals to finish healing his lungs.

@@jivory6131 I believe it will in addition to avoiding ALL dairy for a while. Sodium Caseinate is a dairy derivative and acts like dairy. I used to use Mullein all of the time in addition to avoiding dairy for a while when I had a cold until it was cleared up. After the illness is gone, you can have the dairy again. Avoiding dairy just speeds up the recovery process.
Just remember that thsi is not a replacement to medicine or treatment.
There has actually been zero evidence, even compared to other plants, of helping treat Covid.
Thank you for mentioning the fine hairs of Mullein leaf !!
I had forgotten all about that characteristic until I saw this ! I had bought several pounds of cut and sifted herbs and roots, mullein being one of them. I made myself a tea with the use of an infuser, through which some loose herbs had come. It caused me a rather long hardy and bothersome coughing episode, and I thought perhaps i had just used too much!!
Now i know...! I think my next approach will be to follow your advice and make a quart or two at a time using cheesecloth to strain it, and NOT an infuser ball!!
Thanks, glad you shared your experience here!
My brother, who's 50, is in the hospital with Covid. I do suspect he has pneumonia based on the questions I asked him. He has difficulty breathing, heaviness in his chest, and back. I'm upset because he was home sick for 1 week unable to eat and did not contact me. I am here to learn what I can in case I may need this information for myself or my mother one day. Yet, I pray my brother makes it out of the hospital; he did not sound well at all on the phone. Good health is so invaluable..

Recipe:
0.5 oz dried mullein leaves +
1 quart boiling water
Let it steep for four hours.
After four hours strain it, but it must be strained particularly. Strain it through a thin cloth that’s non absorbent. The mullein has very fine hairs that if not strained through a cloth can get it in your throat*** and cause a coughing issue. Keep straining until there is no liquid left.
Note: Originally I wrote that the fine hairs could get in your lungs because that was what was said in the video. However, some people are saying otherwise.
Yes, thanks! And mullein has very fine hairs....
How can fine hairs get stuck in one's lungs if one is drinking some Mullien infusion?
@@DinaFalconi how can fine hairs get in lungs if drinking a liquid?
I've read about the fine threads as an irritant to the throat, but I'm also asking this question that Henry/Susan are inquiring about.....

@@jacobhealy8376 You picked this one comment to report out of them all. 🤔 Looks like you're out to cause ripples.
Good video. I’ve been making infusions for years and mullein is plentiful here. Only suggestion I would make is most people who make this don’t use doctors because most doctors can’t be trusted. Trust yourself and experiment with different herbs to see what best works for you. Good day!
Thanks for your comment!
She has to say the doctor thing to avoid legal liability. She’s a smart cookie, I’m sure she’s aware.
FWIW, I make mullein tea in our espresso maker. I put a tea bag of some kind of tea in the bottom of the little stainless steel coffee holder to filter out any of the fuzz on the leaves (Lipton Black Tea bags works fine, I just remove the string with tag on them) and then I smash as much dried and crumbled mullein leaf as I can on top of the tea bag in the coffee holder. Then I run just few ounces of water through the espresso maker and then let the heated mullein just sit and steep for a bit, like at least 10 minutes. Then I run a full carafe of water through it to make a full big cup of tea, and I add a teaspoon of raw local honey to it.
You can really feel the mullein tea after you drink it. It's a very slight but lovely euphoric feeling. But you really do have to make it like I've described to feel it, or drink about five or more cups of it if you're using tiny tea bags that hold just a teaspoon of tea in them, and that won't taste near as good.
So, the main take away is I use a lot of mullein for just one cup of tea. It tastes a lot better and, as I've mentioned, you can really feel it, and it feels really good.
I'll add that the mullein I'm using right now is now over a year old and it's still very good. I harvested a bunch of mullein and dried it and crushed in up and filled several big ziplock bags with it and put them in our kitchen cupboard. So it will last a long time. I recently read it will lose it's potency over time but it's pretty slow if it does.
Thanks for sharing your experience here!
My mother has been giving me Mullein since i can remember. Now adult i can see how powerful and important this plan is. Not sure if it makes a difference but her recipe is, boil Mullein with Eucalyptus one tablespoon of Honey with half a lemon juice. And this would be for a Single serving so you can drink it nice and warm.
Thanks for sharing your mother's recipe here.

Just want to share gratitude to Earth Mother and Mullein, to Dina for making this video, and to my Higher Power for leading me here. I am two months free of nicotine use and smoking, and I just recently have developed a cough. PS I have the book you made with that talented illustrator and attended a gathering where we foraged for herbs and practiced drawing them. You are a wonderful teacher!
Hello Laurie, thank you for your comment! Be well.
Iv been on an inhaler excabated asthma for 10 years when l got asthma at 45. Also been on predisone when it's really bad. Now l find l have to take more predisone to make a difference. Xrays say clear lungs. Tried Mullen tea didn't seem to work but l might give this a go. Laurie l hope you notice a difference soon. It can be really scary when you breathe won't come. I really find drinking lots of warm water helps to thin the phlegm. Coffee black or Earl Grey tea is an awesome bronchilator as well. By now you would think a cure for the different types of asthma would have been found. Maybe there's too much money to be made off the sick. I've also cut out dairy, peanuts, refined sugar, wheat . Made some what of a difference. But drinking lots of warm drinks def helps. Get well soon. ❤

@@lauriegorham2746 It sounds like your body was doing some natural cleansing from smoking, it goes through stages. I am glad you are feeling better. Keep exercising your diaphragm and lungs by taking a few deep breaths, holding and then releasing, a few times daily. We moved to a new place last spring and much to my delight, there is a good stand of mullein right on the property. I saved plenty seeds.
It's also a good "pioneer" plant. So even if you don't use it medicinally, by all means leave it there and let it do its job helping to improve the soil. From what I've read it will hang around for a few years and when its soil building work is done, it just sort of fades away and lets a new wave of other plants come in.

I like to breath in the warm steam when I make a mullien tea, I also add a bit of sage. It is also very pleasant to smoke, very soft and a nice taste. Im not a smoker generally, but I believe it can help cut down on smoking cigarettes. Mullien was used years ago in Ireland to treat Tuberculosis. It is my favorite wild plant, Im blessed to have it growing on my own property.
Thank you, good to hear your thoughts about mullein. Are you Ireland?
Dina, I received my bag of mullein from Amazon a few days ago. Immediately did your recipe for the tea. It's not a bad tasting tea. I'm at the tail end of a respiratory infection (again) and want this to end. So I drank the tea. It has helped with the residual shortness of breath. The doctor told me even though you kill bacterial pneumonia or bronchitis with meds, there is still a debris field in your lungs. Great.
The first night I was up all night coughing up mucus. So much my throat was sore. The next day I lived in the bathroom. That's all I'll say.
I would think mullein is also some sort of diuretic and maybe has a laxatative effect. I'm going to keep drinking it though. I want my life back.

Thank you this was so beneficial last January 2022 and now here I go again in TEA SEASON ❤
Thanks, yes! Be well.
This is extremely useful information. I just need to figure out where to buy some, I've never heard of this miracle plant! Thank you so much for sharing this with the community ❤️
Welcome! Hoping you can forage for your own in the growing season. Please view our other mullein videos where I show you how to ID, harvest and find this supportive friend. Links to those are here: ruclips.net/video/djEItd4eAEA/видео.html, ruclips.net/video/Iyt67On1Mhw/видео.html, ruclips.net/video/QHLPZXFB4h0/видео.html To purchase, you can check out Jeans Greens Herbal Tea Works.
Check and see if you have a herbal store in your area. We have a store called wholesale nutrition that has every dried herb you could ever want. They order from mountain rose herbs I think.
Ebay I got 2 ounces coming to me for 8 bucks
I just bought seeds to grow this myself. Excited to learn about it and really interested in making my own medicine. I just made black walnut tincture, too.
Sounds great!
What parts of the black walnut did you use for your tincture?
@@teebee9735 the green shell has this black paste on the inside. Use that part, but remove the “walnut seed”.
@@TriggaTreDay - Awesome! Thank you So much for your time to answer me! 😊
Thank you so much for sharing. That tea "you're " making is infused with lots of peace too. Have been challenged w/asthma for years. Looking forward to trying Mullein Tea😌💞
Thanks for you comment!
I’ve never had an issue with hairs from the leaf. I also haven’t drank it in quite such volume in one day. Thanks for your advice.
Thanks for your comment.
I remember learning about mullein via Dr. Sebi. Great stuff!
Glad.
I make tea 🫖 with it and drink twice a week. Easy Percy and two years thank god no chest cold!! I had very weak lungs before but not any more. Love it and it taste just fine.
Thanks for sharing! Good to know.
Your so knowledgeable, I really enjoyed this informative video. Definitely going to try it.
Thank you.
thank you for making this video
Welcome!
I've found that placing the mullein into 2-3 tea bags works very well. Eliminates the need to strain, so all that's left is to squeeze the tea bags. I also add 4 ginger tea bags to the mix. Two magical herbs!!
Thanks for your comment and sharing your techniques.
@@DinaFalconi 😃
Hi,@@DinaFalconi. Would you happen to know how much mullein powder is equal to 3 tbsp of the leaf? The price of the bulk leaf has skyrocketed and the powder is much more affordable. The leaf is anywhere from twice to 20 times more than what I've been paying. Thank you!!
Who is selling the powder? I have not heard of mullein being powdered....it's a very fluffy leaf and very hard to powder. Still, you can figure out measurements by weighing, better than using volume to measure.@@MsSlimFace
@@DinaFalconi ok. Thanks. Monterey Herb Co, from which I was getting leaf through Amazon. Now out of stock on both sites. It was $14.99 lb. Now I'm seeing as much as $10+ more than that for one ounce!! Powder is $10.80 lb plus shipping direct from Monterey. Thanks again...I should have realized a lb is a lb; just haven't bought the powder yet and was trying to guess by bulk.
For Covid I used mullein, echinacea leaf (didn’t have root), and when temp cooled down enough not to destroy vitamin C I added rose hips and hibiscus.
Thank you for sharing your experience!
There has been zero evidence that mullein is a effective treatment of Covid. This is not a replacement for treatemenr or vaccines.
You’re a good person I hope you have a blessing❤️
Thanks!
Thank you for your recipe. I add mullein syrop to my kid's tea during winter. It's delicious.
Good to know.
Thank you, I enjoyed the straight forward steps. And appreciate the advice at the end with different herbs. I'm definitely trying to learn all I can about herbs and plants that grow around us. I'll have to check out your other videos 🙂
