The snare almost sounds like a synthesized hand clap or something, which I actually kind of like. But yes, definitely very different for him and I'm probably more partial to the more open and booming sound he usually has. Still one of my favourites of his drum tracks, as with the rest of the album.
@@suburbanindiethe separately recorded cymbals vs. drums recording thing is still so crazy to me. The drums sound like they're on the other side of a concrete wall and the cymbals sound like they're right next to you

Morten it gives the drums themselves a more punchy, tighter sound. In fact most of the Songs for the Deaf album was done like this. With the cymbals and drums recorded separately.
That's actually really interesting. At the end of the first chorus when he does that little tom roll, I also hear a cymbal and always wondered how he hit that cymbal perfectly while doing that little roll. Lol now I know
@@Michal844and I agree, he is absolutely my biggest hero in terms of drumming! Not the most technical, but hits hard as absolute hell, and ALWAYS knows what serves a song, and never overplays when it's unnecessary. A true drummer's drummer, imo.

It's most likely that the drum mics picked up what was playing through Grohl's headphones. You can hear Dave counting some stuff out at certain parts. This clip also smells like fresh pots.
Ever since i first saw this performance 22 years back at Glastonbury i have loved this track, to be honest i personally think that Dave totally smokes their original drummer for attack, power, expression & polish

These drums were recorded separately from the cymbals.
One track are the drums with no cymbals and the other track are just the cymbals.
