Chad Channing had his moments but listen to Dale Crover's recordings in the same studio (Reciprocal) and it's clearly not the fault of the recording facilities that so many of Channing's drum tracks sound a bit shit. He was a creative drummer (School has a genius drum riff) but ultimately underpowered.

Well if this is true is sounds like a bit of a dick move on Dave Grohl's part. The band entered a Seattle studio with producer Gil Norton to record the band's second album. It was an arduous and mostly frustrating process for Goldsmith due to Grohl's perfectionism, which led the drummer performing his tracks over and over. "Dave had me do 96 takes of one song, and I had to do thirteen hours' worth of takes on another one. It just seemed that everything I did wasn't good enough for him, or anyone else". With the sessions nearly complete, the band took a break. According to Grohl, Goldsmith's drumming had good moments, but for the most part his performances were not to Grohl’s standards. The band regrouped in Los Angeles in February 1997 and practically re-recorded the album with Grohl on drums & without informing Goldsmith about the overdub session. Goldsmith only later learned his contribution was being replaced from Mendel. Feeling betrayed, and unhappy with Grohl's suggestion he continued on as the band's touring drummer only, Goldsmith decided to leave the band. I mean you can't even be bothered to tell the guy you're removing his drumming? Dick move.
@@lowkeykeylow5526 that is not really a measure of a drummer's competency. Highly complex and technical ideas are only one side of the story. Musicality and the ability to play appropriately to the song and create drum parts that are hard-hitting and memorable, however, does indicate some skill, and Dave has that (not speaking on behalf of Bonham as I'm not too familiar but I'm sure he has it too). Two drummers can be as "good" as each other but play completely differently. Also what you said depends on your own ability so it is subjective. And drumming is not a competition :)
That’s how mixing was done back in the day. The raw tracks would be recorded onto a 24 track recorder then played back through the mixing desk and compressors/eqs/etc onto a 2 track machine, which recorded the final mix. The actual raw tracks were only eq’d at the desk, not at the source.

He beat the shit out of the snare so much that it's detuned by the end of the track. What a fucking beast.
I know, awesome! Thanks for watching CSalpha!
Fucking yeah!
If you skip from the beginning of the song to the end, you can hear his snare has de-tuned from hitting so hard.

I like the In Utero ones better but yes, pretty cool!

yes, i seen that in a documentary. Thanks for watching John!
It wasn't just because 'he couldn't play Everlong'.
Couldn't take his gig drumming to the studio, Taylor also admitted he had red light syndrome but got over it

Id say John Bonham, but Dave sure is a beast
John bohnam without a doubt
Takes me 2 or 3 tries to cover David Grohl, covering one of Zeppelin's songs took me about a month.
