Geoff wasn’t beatboxing, he was just doing the bass line 😅

The little kid is Layne's nephew. Earl was also in The Oogie Boogie. The Santa Clause is Geoff's father-in-law. Eli is also a voice actor who will fill in the bass line for Geoff. Although J. None could do it if they want him to. Another great Song that could qualify for Halloween is Friends On The Other side from the Princess & The Frog. Voice Play knocks it out of the ball park.

I believe the Santa Claus was Geoff's brother-in-law, not father-in-law. J. None is currently singing bass for the US Navy, so I'm pretty sure he could cover a normal bass line. And I've heard (although I haven't seen specific documentation on this) that Layne's range is virtually the same as Geoff's, so he could probably do it as well. Earl (the high tenor) is the only one I'm not sure could cover a bass line in this lineup, I don't know how low he can go.

@@Badger77722 Yes, the 'Sandy Claws' in Oogie Boogie was Pasquale Palazzolo - Kathy's brother, so a LOT of Italian heritage in that family..although I believe that Eli provided the actual voice!

The original beatboxer of Voiceplay (since the beginning as "4:2:5") was Scott Porter, who you will see in Halo Theme. When he left, Geoff taught Layne, who was a baritone, everything he knew about beatboxing, and Layne picked up from there and became the beatbox monster he currently is 🙂.
But there are some old videos, especially a couple in their "partworks", in which Geoff still beatboxes. 🙂
As well as there are others in which Layne sings, and he has a very nice voice. 🙂

Scott Porter is also known for playing Jason Street in the TV show "Friday Night Lights." Hmmm, "Jason Street," huh? Sound's like a place you wouldn't want to be on on Friday The 13th...

Also, just as Layne does vocal percussion in most of videos, Geoff does vocal bass guitar - that what you saw. And to make completely clear - listening to more songs, you'll see that most of them is able to do everything.

  • @ronsbrat525

Scott Porter was their original beatboxer. He left in 2003 for a very successful acting career.
You can see Scott in Voiceplay videos.....

That kid, at the end, gave me Children of the Corn or that episode of Twilight Zone with Billy Mumy vibes.
AJ is correct, they go in to record the video, usually in one day. They all genuinely like/love each other. J None was married recently, they were all at the wedding. Eli and his wife will have a baby in November, they are ALL excited about it. Geoff says he can't wait to hold the baby.
If you watch the behind the scenes stuff, they are goofing off, having fun, and still getting the work done. I love them!

  • @janetdw

With the exception of Earl, who was their high tenor, all of the changes have taken place in the baritone slot. Scott Porter left around 2009 when Layne decided to try his hand at beatboxing. So Tony Wakim came in until around 2017 when he left to cofound PattyCake Productions with Layne. That is when J None joined and stayed with them till 2021 when he enlisted in the navy. And Cesar has taken that slot. They have always used a lot of collaborators, sometimes in addition to the group, sometimes in place of one of the members.
In one of my favorites, Death of a Bachelor, only Geoff and Earl sing. The highest and the lowest voices, but they sing all five parts including the beatboxing. And you can actually see Geoff doing the beatboxing in that.
Lane, Eli, and J can all cover the bassline when Geoff has got the lead when they’re singing live, although they’ll usually go up one octave. Still a respectable bass, just not quite as deep. Cesar, who is technically a baritone, has been trying to expand his range in both directions. He actually hit the high note in Dream On even though Eli and guest star Omar are both high tenors. In contrast, J who was also their baritone, just got reassigned in the navy choir to sing as bass. None of them are very good at staying in their lane!

Another great reaction, thank you gentlemen! Plus, I love VoicePlay, so ... perfect combo!
Earl is one of the original members, from back in 1997, who left the group in 2020 for personal reasons. In the beginning, Scott Porter was the beatboxer, who left in 2003 to pursue his acting career (you can see him in Friday Night Lights, Heart of Dixie, The Good Fight, Lucifer, just to name a few) and Layne was the baritone.
Another video I strongly recommend for Christmas is "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch". Also, please check "Just Sing", and make sure to have cc on for this one!
See you on the next one!

All of them actually can beatbox. A good example of this is Road Trip (from their Sing Off Tour). It's one of Geoff's favorite, when asked what song he'd sing if ever invented to the Whitehouse he said it would be Road Trip. Tony Wakim (Co-owner of Patty Cake Productions is in this video)
Geoff and Layne quite often play off each other with the rhythmic section, which just enhances everything.

Adding on to the other comments: yes, Layne and Geoff are the chief arrangers for the group, but Eli has contributed or done full arrangements as well. Eleanor Rigby is one that Eli arranged.

Awesome reaction guys! One thing about Earl is he is extremely strong. The video 'Daddy sings bass' by Voice Play shows how strong he is when he tosses a square hay bale like it is nothing! You will also get to see some of the family members of the guys at the end of the song if you watch this video.

  • @huldradraco
    @huldradraco 8 месяцев назад +2

Geoff doesn't really do "bass line beatboxing". Layne takes care of all the beatboxing. But what Geoff does as the bass, is highlight and support Layne with his bass, by adding the bass hits that Layne doesn't have the resonance to truly make pop. So Layne does his percussion low hit with Geoff doing his bass hit at the same time, and together they make it truly stand out as a bass hit. Bass and drums make up the rhythm section of an a cappella group, and they work as one. They support each other and form a rhythm section that sounds like they're working as one. At the same time Geoff also needs to support the vocal section, so his bass lines are often a mix of vocal harmony support for the singers, "human bass guitar" for the song as a whole, and also percussion support for Layne. Which makes Geoff's bass lines really advanced, often you can hear him running bass lines up and down the octaves at a high speed when he's in his "human bass guitar" part.
Geoff has done a few videos with VoicePlay where we get to see his old beatboxing skills, but that was because Layne wasn't in them. "Love Yourself" and "Death of a Bachelor" are two of the videos that feature Geoff instead of Layne on beatboxing.

Eli was portraying the Mayor, Earl was Behemoth (the guy with the axe in his head), J None was Wolfman, Geoff was one of the Vampires and Layne was one of the devils. I love this movie and these boys. I also love your reactions guys!

Layne, J, and Eli can all sing bass, and you'd be surprised how low they can go. Layne has hit A0 using a beatboxing technique. Jack is not one of their kids, but is family. I think it is a nephew of Layne. Eli also arranges, and Cesar is working up to doing it for the group as well. They do most of the stuff all themselves. Not the makeup, they have an awesome team for that and a few camera guys they like to use, but arranging, lighting, initial mixing is all done by them. Eli also does the backgrounds like in Enemy and Valhalla Calling. Enjoyed the reaction!!

The person at the beginning knocking on the door is Geoffs' wife Kathy. In the end, when the child takes off the Jack mask it is Laynes' nephew. The guy in overalls is Earl Elkins Jr was a founding member along with Geoff and Layne. He left the group in 2020. AJ if you really want to know how he does it, watch his tutorials on how he sings so low. There are four of them.

Bass singers always do a good amount of bass line support; that's their job. When they're really good, they sing lead, too. Also, in the movie there are characters in Halloween Town, like Creature from the Black Lagoon, that you can identify, but also many generic witches, zombies, etc. I'll watch tonight and see if I can spot Eli's character. I've always intended to do that!

Haha guys you were right. I loved this. Doesn’t Geoff and the guys just floor you every time? I will admit I giggle a little when your guys’ jaws drop. They are so good and their a cappella sound is really nothing I’ve ever heard before. I think it’s because they arrange for where their voices currently are vs where they think they should be, also it seems like they also push their limits every time with each new song. Their music has weight and gravity to it. I think what drew me to their music (not just their sound) was because I was in the process of starting an art business and was taking a business class, but not really understanding what I was learning unto I saw it in practical application from their website. I found out their sense of humor held no bounds and it gave me the courage to go for it. Haha I guess you could say I’m an unconventional artist and usually draw my favorite tv characters as birds, but recently I’ve been drawing my favorite musicians too…so ya I’m in the process of drawing Voiceplay as birds.

If you watch VP's Greatest Showman medley, Layne did that arrangement and there is a section where he makes everyone do some beatboxing. So that video is him, Geoff, Eli, Cesar and featuring Rachel Potter.
There are also some videos floating around from when Geoff performed in the parks, I think the group is called the Dapper Dans, but don't quote me on that, but he does the bass line and beatboxing at the same time.

He was in the Dapper Dans. I believe those would’ve been the guys in the striped red and white jackets and the straw hats. He commented one time about his spats when he was getting ready to perform as a dapper Dan. But I’ve also seen him in train conductor uniform singing and Earl was in the group. And as a train conductor he was doing the bass and beatboxing.

Layne for a while actually held the title of lowest singer in the group hitting a b0 I believe using what are called inhale notes where simply your pulling air in to make noise instead of out. Geoff can do this but not a skillfull and it dosent sound very good. Inhale notes will either sound good or bad and there's no way to really change how yours sound or to make them sound better for yourself. However Geoff has since hit the same and I believe while not singing but in his tutorial videos hits one note lower than it.
