Would you go for the McLaren Artura or the Ferrari 296 GTB?
The McLaren every time ! 😊
Ferrari
The 296... If I were choosing... It just seems that bit more special.
But neither are really my cup of tea.
296. Sadly McLaren still seem to have quality issues.
Ferrari
As a McLaren 570 owner I’m disappointed that yet again the factory are pushing out cars to the press fleet that aren’t 100% fettled and ready for the onerous testing that so obviously awaits… issues with software really are unacceptable on IRIS after 10 years evolution🤔… none of this helps the “cars are fragile” reputation of McLaren within the YT and SM community.
Painfully reminiscent ill-practices of another British Sportscar manufacturer, that paid the ultimate price of their recklessness... they no longer exist, sadly... A once respected manufacturer with proper British heritage, a company sized just right, just enough to still be in touch with their prospective buyers and enthusiasts, and owners on a personal level that owning one meant like it or not you bought into an actual family and friends; part of the allure for most buyers. Owning one put you closely in touch with anyone from the company, a long lost practice, or rather i should say reality of Manufacturers like Ferrari and Lamborghini, Porsche even.
Something about British made exotica that are unique enough to appeal to a very particular set of folks and enough to keep the money coming in just enough to continue its hand made construction. British built sports cars like Lotus, McLaren, TVR, Noble, etc are as delicate financially as they are constructed. Unique as they are meant to be, attracting customers who desire something different than the usual Italian or German offerings.
Jonathan - I am referring to TVR by the way. The ill practices I keep hearing and reading about from owners of McLaren are becoming undeniably frequent and were the same practices that eventually killed TVR.

Great job again team👍
Yes it's absolutely carfection ⛽️
Watch Harry's Garage review. That's the most real review.
I'd kill to see a vid of all the reviewer heavyweights. Same track, same day, same car. Henry vs Sutcliffe vs Monkey vs Jethro maybe add Harry in for a wild card. Let's see who's fastest and can pull the most lurid skid. Maybe Carfection could set it up?

This is the Artura review I've been waiting for.
Love to see this vs the MC20 and 296GTB
Completely different cars: 296 is in a superior class (both for price and performance), MC20 is more of a GT (and isn't hybrid). I think some fairer comparisons would be this vs 911 GT3 vs Huracan RWD vs R8 and MC20 vs Turbo S vs McLaren GT.
296 would destroy it. This car is underpowered, as ridiculous as that sounds to say about a 670hp vehicle.
@@seligerKU not underpowered, just a different class
@@agustinseguy yeah, a p1 would destroy a 296, people are dumb
@@Taz1451 yeah
Terrible for Mclaren to launch a car in those conditions. The car was a mess in terms of reliability and it seems 2 units caught fire (that's what happens when you layoff half of your workforce).
Please Mclaren fix the car before you start delivering them to the owners, your future as a car manufacturer depends on it.
idk which one to focus, the immense cinematography or the automotive journalism. Both are bloody blooming amazing!
As a sidenote: congrats on the Speedmaster Henry :). Looks good.
hasn't he had it for a while now?
Watches are almost the dumbest veblen product out there, I will say it's better than carrying a $1,000 phone though.
I love the design of the lights there mixing the practicality of the 720s and the look of the p1
Tbh I wish they would try something new, it's the same look on most of their cars and they just don't stand out amongs each other.
@@ahoymateeez they are fine
Loved the review. Well done. I like that they kept the styling in-line with previous models.
I like this new breed of 6 cylinder PHEV supercars, and I can appreciate the Artura is not as fast as the 296 and that's fine. I feel that abandoning the alphanumeric scheme right when it's finally something everyone is used to is confusing and opening themselves up to criticism. It's hard to tell where this car stands in the lineup so if its performance doesn't match superior competition, people will criticize it because they don't understand where it is in the lineup. I worry it'll do more to hurt the brand than help it.
It revs a lot! Sounds better than the V8 to me; it's more "sound" and less "noise".
The styling...well, it doesn't look much more modern than a 720S, but I still like it. The interior is not very attractive to me.
I really hope they can fix the reliability issues that all reviewers mentioned.
Another great review by Henry!
I have watched a few different reviews of this car and this is by far the best shot. The cinematography is brilliant. The intro is great. Better than Evo, Top Gear. Etc. Keep it up guys.
Evo is a magazine first, youtube second.
What about Doug???? Surely his videos are the best shot?
I understand that it’s their bread-and-butter model, so they don’t want to risk much design wise, but a fresher approach would have been good.
For the “average” person they all start to look the same, which makes it outdated right from the beginning.
Nice video (as always)!
Cheers
if it ain't broke....
same way why 911 looks the same for the last 50 years
@@ChR0nos_7734 The important difference:
The 911 is 1 iconic model of a otherwise very diverse lineup!
McLarens models are - except for some limited halo projects - basically indistinguishable for the average bystander. Is it some 6xx, 7xx, 5xx?! Which model year?!
In addition even powertrain etc. are repetitive.
A Ferrari is always a Ferrari, but they have multiple clearly distinguishable models, and constantly reinvent their design language.
they are copy-pasting for sales to fund their out-dated, end of the era driver like ricciardo
@@bella_testastretta No matter for what reason, copy-and-paste is always dangerous for a car manufacturer!
Especially when building more expensive sports cars, which heavily rely on design!
You may copy/paste some entry level Golf to a certain degree, but otherwise have to evolve or reinvent.
Porsche created a Boxster, a Cayenne, a Carrera GT etc.
When talking about McLaren most people know the iconic F1 from back in the day, but can’t tell you what they’re creating right now or what model they’re looking at!
My God... your editor of/and DOP is killer.
You guys and all crew make the best films. 👌
Thank you. 😊
I've waited so long for a review on the artura tnx gus
Ferrari interiors look a lot more luxurious and upmarket. It might not be as ergonomic as this but it definitely is worthy of being in this segment's supercar.
So its a Honda NSX... Love it!
Oh that first shot 🤩🤩👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Once the video embargo for a new model is lifted, I have a handful of similar videos in my RUclips feed.

Wonderful video Henry 💪👏👏👏

We are spoilt with Catchpole, Bovingdon and Sutcliffe posting reviews. It has to be said, from a production point of view Carfection is a clear step ahead of all the rest. You mention the intsrument binnacle, we see a perfect shot of the instrument binnacle, on the move. Lovely. Thank you guys, and please keep it up for at least as long as Harry Metcalfe has by now!
Amazing content as always! I had a thought while watching though, I'd like to see Henry's footwork at times, even if it meant having a camera somewhere next to his head. Just a thought.
Hi Henry. Must firstly say I really really love you videos. Sadly I'd probably never will experience a Mc Artura but it looks lovely. I agree with you that a unsettled rearend in the breaking zone is fun but not fast :-) but is it controllable then it's both. Please keep up the good work. Kind regards /David Johansson Sweden
Thanks Henry!
Nice video as usual but I really do miss the days of the 570gt type of cinematography. everything feels rushed these days, I recall a video of you reviewing the 765LT learnt something about a cactus on that video.
It looks good and I love their doors that go up. The software issue is concerning, so I really hope they really fix this.
As for styling, McLaren's approach is their own. While I enjoy Ferrari's departures from their own norms, these aspects are what make the car makers individual. I'd love to see more design evolution from McLaren, but I woudn't ask them to do it. Just as I'd never ask my girlfriend to dye her hair to please my whim.
I kinda miss the 12C styling, though the 720s and GT were also good looking. Their other cars look decent but nothing I'd fall in love with.
@@Bruno-cb5gk The 12c was a munter. Sorry
Beautiful Ronda!
I’d like more info on the “chimney”… is it just a hole in the lid or something more?
pretty car, hope they can sort the niggles. When are you reviewing the other new V6 on the block - Emira?
I wonder how many owners will drive reasonable distance electric only, go on the highway, switch on the combustion engine and start flooring it with the engine cold...
I'm kind of shocked modern cars don't lower the rev limiter according to engine temperature.
Another great video. In addition to comparing the Artura to the Ferrari 286 GTB I would love to see how they both compare to the outgoing Acura NSX Type S. I think that would be a very interesting matchup.
when the engine kicks in, is it already warmed up?
Heard there were a few glitches on the press launch even one car catching on fire
So would Henry you rather have this or the MC20?
Fantastic review, I just wonder how long until that "chimney" catches on fire on a customer...
They should have been a little more radical at the front but all in all not bad, I hope they get the problems right I have a order in for one since the middle of last year.
Good to see the Speedy back on your wrist Henry
centre console screen looks like it's straight out of the volvo xc90 .
Kind of mad that their response to "This brand new car has issues" is "When it breaks down we will fix it under warranty" 😐
I'd love to see Henry, Steve and Jethro all get together and start their own channel👍👍👍
Does the P1 has those problems you discovered in Artura?
Great video. Hopefully McLaren launches a non hybrid version of it with even more lightweight parts. I do love driving in electric only mode in cars though that said. 👍🏼👍🏼
Regulations probably won't make it feasible.
I'm surprised you guys didn't review the Lotus Emira :( Coming in the future, maybe?
Coming in a few days
I’m not sure that warranty gives confidence.
It just means that when the car is away at the garage for months out of each year, there should be no invoice at the end. But you still won’t have the car.
And warrantee doesn't guarantee problem-free, if you're dealing with corporate slime such as VAG, FCA, or Mercedes.
@@numbereightyseven
Corporate slime? McLaren has a very low score on how they treat customers. There are so few of them that even one bad client-facing individual can taint the whole brand. With the other groups, one can simply move to a better shop. With McLaren, many people have to go to Manchester.
1:25 you crossed the Kazunori Yamauchi bridge in Ronda
Do these come with fire extinguishers?
I like this style. I prefer this one, especially cus McLaren makes a kind of the same face in every model (each different generation).
On the road, given the low weight, do you think the car would be any less fun with say only 300hp or maybe even 200hp? Aside from acceleration which would still be fine.
Shoulda called it mp4-12 v5
Doesn't look special enough. It would be nice to have a McLaren that didn't look like the rest of their offerings. To have to look at the badge to see what it is is just diluting the impact of seeing a McLaren.
@@Sidowse the Porsche line-up is wildly varied which cannot be said of McLaren...

You guys should do the commercials for McLaren...that intro...wow!
That's what these videos almost always are though.
After everyone telling the manufacturers they don’t like capacitive touch controls for HVAC and audio, they insist on using it. For what its worth, I think it’s because it “gets in the way” of the futuristic look they are trying to go for. Buttons and knobs date the car in their eyes. Too bad, figure it out, that’s your job, make the buttons and knobs look good and usable. Done.
These days touch screens are cheaper to make than physical buttons. Car makers are marketing cost cutting as a futuristic feature. Unfortunately it’s unlikely that they will ever switch back
@@stevenjalopnik1342 That may be true, but on what’s going to be a £200k+ car by the time you’ve added a few basic options, you’d have thought they could damn the expense and make something tactile and functional. They still use mechanical steering so why not mechanical knobs?
@@stevenjalopnik1342 I seriously doubt touch screens are cheaper to build than physical buttons. Where did you get this information?
The opposite is true, computers age like milk and date a car horrifically.
What does this do that the 2016 Honda NSX hybrid doesn't ?
Good review as is Evo’s.
An “axial flux” electric motor is the kind of thing I would hear in a movie and think “well clearly they made that shit up”.
Of the 2.5 videos I've seen of this launch, Henry is the only one to mention issues with the press fleet.
why not go smaller displacement v8 and hybrid systems?
I’m a 600LT Spider owner, so I’ve been looking forward to the Carfection review of the Artura.
I saw a pre-production model last year, and whilst it was nicer inside than the previous Sport Series car, it was also extremely bland. Having watched this review I also think the car is just too safe and just as bland to drive as it is to look at. There’s nothing about it that would tempt me away from my 600LT. This will be a big issue for McLaren if previous owners feel the same way. Hopefully it’ll be great for the residual value of mine!👍
Me too, I don’t think it’s aimed at the current 600LT owner which as we both know is heavily track orientated , saw the Artura at McLaren’s Silverstone track day, it’s nice but doesn’t give me the wow factor in terms of looks , the rear window and roof line isn’t great tbh, I hope it’s successful for Mclaren, if not I really do fear the McLaren brand.
Great car! Catchpole is amazing
1:30 Can someone explain to me why they aren't just using a Flat 6?
If this thing always starts up in E -mode and you have to change into a street or track mode to get the motor running, aren't you at risk of going for the ICE performance on a cold engine?
Yes good point. With my PHEV BMW I’ve been using the engine when I depart just to warm it up and then go back into hybrid mode when there’s heat in the engine. Then I keep a watch on the temp gauge to be safe
The engine goes into conditioning mode before it actually starts delivering torque.
At some point, McLaren are going to need to come up with a car design which doesn’t look like any other McLaren ever made… Also, come off the fence, which do you prefer: Artura or 296 GTB?
Artura
TBH THIS IS The Best ARTURA REVIEW
I quite like it. It seems like it would suit my driving taste.
Beautiful car
Awd and what’s the 1/4 mile?
I want one
The new Maclaren Emira looks fabulous!
I was thinking how cool, this would be. If this had a 6 speed manual.
Is Henry the greatest motoring journalist - probably
Have a question. Is the M630 engine still produced by Ricardo?
Yes.
One thing that I cant find an answer to is that since the car been driving on EV mode. Then I want the boost of power from the engine and rev it all the way up before changing gear. Wouldnt that harm the engine? since the engine is cold?
potentially. that applies to any cold engine.
I'm a pretty keen car nut but I doubt I could identify the model of any MC out on the road.
For some reason the car reminds me of a Lotus design. Smaller engine, insistence on weight savings, mid engine, and front end feel and bite. It's also really attractive.
If I had mad money, I would buy one, but not until its 2nd or 3rd year of production. The reasons are obvious: There remains are too many software and related issues to sort out. Plus, I have a suspicion, by next year, McLaren's gonna swap out its e-motor for something with a little more BHP. (Maybe it will do so after up'ing its current line of V8's output to something like 810 bhp) :-)
Will they make a spider?
Who notices the electric voice that resembles ozzy?❤ whats the song?
Wonder how many will burn down because of that heat?? Would rather the 296
Sounds like they need a bit more time in the oven. Can't say I'd invest nearly 200K into something that's not quite done and kind of glitchy. However, it looks amazing and has a tonne of promise. I like what I see.
Y222MCL front, Y777MCL on the back ?
I know the last engine was a ricardo tuned nissan v8 which turned out to be rather fragile, is this new v6 better than what on the surface looks like a missed opportunity to just have ricardo to tune the r35 v6 unit which has turned out to be a rather good. I also cant help but feel they went safe in design and extras on the car just to have a position in the marked for a more racey varient in the future. Also why remove so much of the battery recovery and have poorer brakes then the competition, are they quietly admitting there shortcomings in ability to fine tune stability and brake feel when recovering under braking?
Good video of a great car... but the bit at the end seems very amateurish and almost an afterthought... was that planned?
Let's hope they sell more than what feels like 6 GT cars they made
is it going to be an really afordable competitor to legendary mclaren p1? i think yes, and that is beautiful in hybrid power
Hollister though?
It's a beautiful evolution of the current McLaren line-up. Unfortunately it doesn't inspire excitement like Ferraris and Lambos do, with their louder engines and exhausts. Nevertheless, I'd love to test drive one some day. Thanks for the great video!
I agree. Mclaren has sooo much potential but they really are making things difficult for themselves.
2:46 Vroom
Looks good, but I would like it if they kept making radically different looking cars.
Awe WOW! I knew they had something going well in the engineering dept. Bloody gorgeous
shocked at how similar the V6 and V8 feel I wonder if it's because both are flat plane crank (can anyone confirm?)
I kind of like the Mclaren design language. The more I learn about the different models it's like finding Easter eggs where before you only saw pleasing river stones.
E-mode makes a racket!
The Artura looks great. However, hopefully it's more engaging than competitors since most will be more powerful.
