FIRST DRIVE: NEW McLaren Artura - 671bhp Hybrid Ferrari 296 GTB Rival? | Top Gear

  • This is new. Not as in new-improved, but new as in new. The first MP4-12C was 25,000 McLarens ago, and every model since has basically been new-improved, or new-cut-price. The all-new McLaren Artura chucks away all familiar hardware we’ve come to know from McLaren and starts again. It's a plug-in hybrid for one. And, yes, its 671bhp falls some way short of McLaren's original hybrid, the 903bhp P1, though its £182,500 sticker is a whole lot less. But is it enough to take the fight to the similarly turbocharged six-cylinder Ferrari 296? Top Gear Magazine’s Ollie Marriage went to a very hot Spain to find out.

If it is 62k less than a 296 GTB, it obviously isn't a competitor to it. But as a rival to an R8 Performance or 992 Turbo (S), it sure is a nice option. The design is also amazing in my opinion.

The 296 is not really the comp here as its more expensive and faster. Its actually the MC20. Both have the same price, speed, quickness, interior simplicity, etc. (other competitors are the R8, turbo s, RWD huracan, NSX). And I'd take the MC20 just based on looks alone over the Artura and the fact that it sounds better with the Maserati's cool blow off sounds (both engines sound pretty dull otherwise).

    • @Taylor___
      @Taylor___ 2 года назад +18

Quite right. MC20 is prettier.... Oh just read on, you said that too. I am a little bored of Mclaren though, it's the same design over and over again. If you can afford this or a MC20 then you could probably afford a 296 lol... if I had the choice, it would be a MC20 or 296. Actually I've just googled the price, are you sure? It looks like the 296 is only a bit more expensive. No sorry mate, the Ferrari is nearly 100K more and the two cars would reach 1000m's neck and neck as the Ferrari is heavier

Frankly, the looks are great as always for the regular roadgoing models from Woking, so I wouldn't fault them at that... Heck I'd applaud them for the understated elegance that does not age bad... Since this is the sport series model, I'd say it needs to fare well against said Ferrari only partially, rather its main rival would be 911 Turbo S - question is can the English 2WD hybrid compete with Stuttgart's finest? On paper, the two share cylinder count, are close in engine capacity, even total motor output looks similar, but the tried and tested 911 seem to best this thing on practicality and possibly outright performance. As such I'm afraid the answer might currently be no... Another conteneder this thing needs to fare well against is the already few years old "new" NSX - also a 6-cylinder hybrid with performance and efficiency and road-going credentials in a sports car suit... Mayhaps once they inevitably release an "S" higher power veriant the leash placed on this model might be let off a bit... Or once they transplant the idea into the super series model, when it's going to be more in line with the Ferrari counterparts... Still, 911s soon will also inevitably be hybridised or EV-olved in future and they might bring to the table even more outright performance and clever packaging under same hood to again push the results in Stuttgart's favor... I'm guessing that is why this model came to be just because of this - Macca has not managed to become the first in the super series target demography market to offer the hybridised super car, so they lost the "first to offer" PR campaign creds, the ultra series market is already brimming with various hybrids and EVs they'd have to fare against with their new product, it simply was safer to reveal new platform for the lower sports series and test the ground/Macca fans reactions, as this market segment does not have many high performance hybrid supercar-looking vehicles - there's basically NSX and the rest is mostly ICE only... Less competition equals possible better sals and testing ground for the "new" building blocks solution. Regardless, it's pity they've not included regenerative braking, whether on track or on road, you have to slam and touch the stoppers quite often and a lot of energy oculd have been recuperated for the electric motors to utilise once the need for forward thrust arises...

I might sound stupid here but this car could just be aimed at an average super car buyer or someone who wants to just daily drive this or use for the weekend. I’ve been told Mclaren are trying to make there cars more cheaper for entry requirement standards but I like what there doing. Sorry if that sounds stupid btw.

I really like the style too. Goes to show that when the overall shape is right, it works with very minimalist detailing. I also like the technical choices, with the 120 degree V6 and the way electric power is handled. It's got some of that F1 connection you need when you have an F1 team. I've seen some mention NSX which makes me think that this has that "modern NSX" feel - understated and uncluttered, kind of practical for a two-seater.

Although tried and true, the Porsche 911 are a tired and dated looking fugly VW beetles that have not seen any real sense of aesthetically pleasing improvements in the last 2 decades. Most look at a GT2RS, GT3RS or a Carerra and wouldn't even know that there was a $300K price difference between models. In traffic and parked, they're uninspiring and quite boring to see and far too common in more affluent suburbs of major cities. My 2018 NSX is a much better car. Hell, even my Huracan Performante is a nicer looking car and is faster at times depending on the canyons or track it's being ran at.

I understand the comparison with the 296 GTB because they have similar tech setup, but a Ford Escort and a Ford T also has similar tech setup. A Boxster and a 911 also has similar setup / does not make them comparable. The 296 is 60k more expensive and higher output.

So mclaren have finally taken some F1 tech and applied to a road car. Not only have they taken the basic priniples of the current F1 engine (v6 turbo hybrid with the turbos in the V) they have evidently also transferred their gearbox over. When was the last time you saw an f1 driver be able to find reverse?

296 is the sucessor of the f8 tributo since they've stop to take orders in. I would say that the next hybrid that will replace the 720S will be the rival of the 296. 540/570/600lt never really had comp at ferrari and it seems that it will pretty much look the same with the new line up that Mclaren is offering. None than less, new artura in papaya orange really does it for me!

Just drove this car for about a half hour and it's much better looking in person, great technology, nicely refined but really goes to show you how great of a deal the 570s is right now for almost 100k less. It didn't feel much faster than the 570s. It sounds nice but in no way did it sound better than the V8.

Got an order on the 296, and this makes me glad I went with it over the artura. Awkward styling and weird interior on this. The orange does look stunning however. One thing i like is no reverse gear, which is something the 296 doesn’t have. Always puzzled me why Ferrari would do it on the sf90 but not the 296.

I also have a 296 on order. I wish Ferrari was as committed to keeping the weight as low like Mclaren has done. Not a huge fan of the styling of the Artura and the Ferrari interior is far superior as it should be for additional cost. Either way they are both great cars and this is my first Ferrari as a long time Mclaren fanboy

Very interesting to see no regenerative braking. This probably makes the car much more nimble and enjoyable to drive with the reduced weight (compared to cars with regenerative braking) and better brake feel. However, probably want to have regen for an everyday car for the improved efficiency. For a sports car though, id have no regen.

I dont understand the lack of regen braking. My understanding is that it recovers lots of power in normal day to day driving (my friends Kia EV shows often 50 to 60% from regen over a day to day run) and it does not weigh that much extra as it uses the EV Drive to recover the power. ???? The small battery in this is going to run out fast (or suck out the energy from the motor to charge the battery). I wonder how many laps on the track before this just losses 30% of its power carrying a brick (dead battery) around. ???

My 66 plate 650s spider is build no 60XX. So between late 2016 to mid 2022(6years) they have produced 19,000 cars of mixed models? In that time they have shed almost half their workforce, sold their headquarters(production & assembly plant.)Then we've had 3years of Covid, chip shortage & wiring harness availability! They've either manged brilliantly or someone got their sums wrong?

I'm wondering what happened to this car? It got released over a year ago and only now the reviews are coming out. Not just down to chip shortage right? Regardless, the 296 is another metric above, I reckon that will compete with the 720S replacement. It can hold its own next to a Maserati MC20 and a Huracan EVO RWD. I particularly like the finger-operated drivetrain controls on the top of the instrument cluster. Really great effort, just hope it is reliable and is a big stepping stone towards McLaren Auto back to its exciting halo times of the P1 and 675LT.
