- After a long night camping with a sleepless baby we awake to seek out delicious coffee and soak up the views of a stunning canyon. Caroline and I pick up a new form of adventure travel and embark on our first mountain bike ride. In spite of our sleep deprivation we find joy in the simple things as we learn to travel the backcountry with a new baby.

I would recommend that all three of you adjust the saddle on the bike a bit higher so you can benefit from you strong leg muscles, just so high that you still can put your the tip of your feet on the ground - maximize your strength 🙂
I didn't want to make the suggestion...but this is the first comment in the list so I'll second you.
With mountain bikes I like to use sitting on the bike, with cranks up/down, foot placed on the pedal closer to the ground and leg should be mostly straight with a little bend. I only say this because mountain bike bottom bracket height can very.
That being said, now that I’m further in the video it looks like they figured this out

I just turned 26 and my future fiancé/wife is 24 we make decent money with our jobs, but what the heck do you guys do to afford to live like this or are able to let go of certain things to also live like this ? you need to raise up your seats so your legs are almost straight on the down strokes. Your legs won't get as tired.
Gotta raise those seats higher on the mtb’s
Love seeing the whole family getting out there and trying the mountain bikes! As someone with extensive cycling experience, you would both benefit from raising the seat height on those bikes. You want the seat high enough so that at the bottom of your pedal stroke, your leg is still just barely bent. This helps avoid cramps and makes your pedal strokes much more efficient.
You mentioned Live Work Wander! They were they first ever Overlanders who inspired me to travel. Miss their videos so much.

Low seats are for steep downhills. Toe clips would help a lot

Yep! Throw them in the wash with your towels and reuse them as shop towels, window rags, etc. 👍

Use of the winch and snatch block may be a solution to move those rocks. Positive there was a reason you did not go that route. Smart thinking to see how the condition of the trail was ahead. Thanks for sharing.

Fabulous adventure as usual. Not that it's my problem, but may I suggest raising the seat post a few inches on both your bikes? You're not utilizing the full strength in your legs, and you might end up with aching knees if your legs don't extend almost fully.

When Abigail gets to minimum 18 months you can put her on the 'kids ride shotgun' seat they are amazing! and a great way for parent and toddler time whilst being outdoors.
The adventures i have with my kids on my ebike are the best.

Having 3 kids myself, I was never a fan of the bad nights of rest and difficulty traveling with newborns. But it's just a stage and soon they are toddlers...running around all day and sleeping through the night.
