Just terrific. Not everybody is knowledgeable about things like this so this video is just the job. The advice given here is balanced, not condescending and comes from a genuine first hand experience. Top marks mate.
As much as this pains me to admit, for a South African you are light years ahead of anyone in Australia in terms of your off road common sense and your 4WD technical knowledge and it’s application. Your logic is indisputable. Simply amazing! 😲
Oh God. This Man, he is such a good teacher and he is giving me so positive vibes. I really love the way how he explain everything and he makes it so so Clear !!!
Andrew, this is such a great resource. Here are things you MIGHT find you need, and here is how to best determine if/when you need/want them. EXCELLENT!
Thank you so much for this video, Andrew. Though many of your followers are experienced off-roades and overlanders, having this type of video gives one a philosophy as they go about making their first purchases right up to the big ticket items for their rig.
David Attenborough and Andrew are similar, because one reason, easy to listen to, also,. coherent, articulate, very intelligent.,last, thoroughly know their stuff inside and out.
I get asked about this often as well and always feel like I'm ducking the question when I answer "It depends how you want to use your vehicle". So it's nice hearing the same basic answer from you.
That's an awesome informative vid for rookies like me that going to put a lot of unnecessary things on vehicle, spending too much money for getting worst result. Excellent job!
What I find amazing is that even though I have seen a lot of your previous videos and learned a lot from them, I still learn something new from your videos. Thank you
Very nice overview of how to get started. So important to ask yourself what you are going to do with vehicle and what is needed to get off on your adventure.
Tyre repair kit is damn vital, used cheap ones they are utter shit, they break don't make a big enough hole, cheap rubber plugs that break and crap glue, a quality set is a must have, thorns sharp rocks no brainer, awesome video Andrew
What I love about great channels such as this one, is that we get to watch and learn from passionate creators. This was a very informational video, thank you.
That compressor looks like my Smitty built of the same size. That is a very nice compressor and pumps more air than many small compressors people have in their garage taking up 8 times the space.
The method I'm using is just take the vechicle out a lot and see where the limits lie and adjust accordingly. That way you prevent buying unnecessary "upgrades". I mainly use my vehicle on weekends for off roading with planned tours once in a while so I have the luxury to do that. Ofcourse when outfitting for a big trip sometimes you need to do it in one go so good tips for that kind of stuff. Tires and a good air pump are THE best upgrades when starting out by the way. Seen guys with ARB bumpers and expensive lighting getting stuck because they use road tires in the mud :D
As for air, I killed one of those cheap pumps every eight months for five years (hey they are cheap). Now I've got a nice blue one like yours and it's been going strong for four years buy it's self, and no signs of slowing down. Not over kill IMO.
Excellent video! As a novice to overlanding I found it very informative and helpful as I build out my truck. Future videos expanding on the various topics covered would be great as well.
No offense, but I think this is the best video you have made. I love the trip videos, but as someone new to overloading (Building up my truck) this is exactly the type of video I have wanted to see. Not just a high end truck video walk around, but a build to suit someone else. I look forward to the next one. I would suggest this be in a playlist on how to get started.
good luck breaking a plasma line. when I was a U>S>Army Watercraft operator ( Deck side) on the small (900 Series Tugboats) as well as the bigger tug boats, that's all we used to tow the craziest of things. to date I don't remember hearing of any plasma lone breaking. so its good to hear that you can get plasma's for your vehicle winch. put a winch of the front and rear of your vehicle and set up to pull on both, I will bet that you will rip your vehicle in half before those lines break
Not a bad video champ, just one thing though .... here in Australia we use indicators / blinkers when we go around roundabouts, that way everyone knows what you’re doing 😀👍
Soft shell tents have their advantages particularly since you can go out to king sized mattress and still not take up the entire length of the roof rack. The best I've seen for a hard shell traditional clam shell tent is a double sized mattress which is barely enough to sleep two comfortably..They may take 10 mins or more to set up..but at least a family of 3 or 4 can sleep comfortably..
When it comes to air compressors, I would have chosen an ARB product. From personal experience, even the single motor ARB compressor is far better in quality & durability than other brands in the market IMO. You really only need the twin motor model if you have lockers or frequently change air pressures (or use it for cleaning dust). But for use with tyre pressures, the single motor ARB compressor is more than sufficient. I've had other brands and none of them lasted - most common failure is the motor overheating. They just couldn't handle the task. I was lucky to get 2.5 years from one (the other two - different brands each - lasted less). But the ARB, I've had now for over 5yrs and its still going strong - touch wood.
I just stumbled across your videos! FANTASTiC. What an excellent resource. Thank you. I'm buying an older 4Runner with low miles, and want to set it up for off-road touring.
As someone looking to "kit up" their bakkie... thanks for this video... Have considered a few of the items mentioned, but never properly understood the reason for their fitment.
Amazing info and so much good advice, great video!!! However, i would not agree about lockers. Lockers can be life savers. If i'm going off road i'm anticipating rough, uneven, muddy, sandy rocky or slippery terrain. Lockers are good for all of it. If you don't want the selectable lockers (ARB or OX) you can at least get the Torsen or Detroit so you don't have to think about it. It's a night and day difference unless you're on a flat terrain with good traction all the time. Some of my priorities for my area would be: - more ground clearance - bigger tires with more grip (mud) - lockers (at least the rear)
Look, I don't disagree with you. But lockers often make bad drivers. Yes they can be life savers. But they are a cop out. Drivers who have grown up with them don't learn about effective lines through or over obstacles. This is the point I was trying to make. (IMHO. Larger tires - NOT wider. Its a fallacy that wide tyres are better in sand and mud. They are a disadvantage in most mud and no advantage in sand. Only an advantage in dry ground extreme grip situations like rock crawling. Proof: military and rally drivers use narrow tyres on soft ground. Another argument altogether!)
Fantastic Video. I am looking forward to the next. I just took delivery of my new adventure vehicle (2019 T4R TRD PRO) and have begun its build. I have learned much from your past videos. Thank you 🙏
Wow! Such a great informative video! Probably one of my favorites to date due to the sheer information provided within! Thank you, can’t wait to catch part 2.
A minute of silence for all people around the World who will probably Never taste what it feels like to own this beast. WE welcome you in our support group with many activities such as, RUclips video of 70series.
Great stuff, especially for me you is just in the very first stages of a build. I really enjoyed it. Would love to see more of your opinions on stuff you must have and things that you don't use anymore and why. May help the beginner avoid some issues. Thanks again
We appreciate a lot your instructive and very practical videos. Well explained and clear. We are learning a lot with it. Thank you very much from Spain. LR Disco 95 300tdi. 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😀
Excellent video (as usual)! I’m glad I have the totally beautiful and great working overkill ARB Twin Compressor for my 4Runner. Every time Mr. 4x4 St. Pierre White says something is not absolutely necessary, I go get it... :)
I just found out that Camp Cover products are being imported to USA and sold by Ozark Overland Outfitters. They have a website. I am not affiliated with them in any way, just glad to see this product here in the U.S. now.
Talking about the radiator,I had mine smashed by a branch that was thrown in the mud by someone . Went through the the bash plates, aircon condenser, the intercooler and the radiator.
With an infrequently used winch he could spool it out and in every few months to keep it in check and moving Good quality traction control systems might just be enough most of the time If you wait 30 mins before crossing water you don't need breathers as cool steel and cool water won't cause the issue, downside is many cups of tea whilst you wait
Just terrific. Not everybody is knowledgeable about things like this so this video is just the job. The advice given here is balanced, not condescending and comes from a genuine first hand experience. Top marks mate.
This guy is the David Attenborough of 4x4’s
Kit Walker Though the same thing. Sounds just like him.
Nice BBC vid of the troopy used as an ambulance in Afghanistan.
except if you really listen to him he's mostly just saying the same thing over and over.
I think I would have learned something at school if he had have been my teacher.
I don't know man, hes on the wrong side of the road? Is he drunk?
As much as this pains me to admit, for a South African you are light years ahead of anyone in Australia in terms of your off road common sense and your 4WD technical knowledge and it’s application. Your logic is indisputable. Simply amazing! 😲
I have been following this channel for over 5 years now. So far it's the best 4x4/travel advice channel I came across.
Unlike other videos that tell you what you need, this video tells you WHY you need or or don't need something.
Oh God. This Man, he is such a good teacher and he is giving me so positive vibes. I really love the way how he explain everything and he makes it so so Clear !!!
Why am I watching this I have never offroaded in my life before
Now you will lol
I recommend buying a Jeep Rubicon if you want to get into, they're beasts off road
Same! I own a 4x4 but haven’t off-roaded or overlanded it. Yet.
just get a Toyota land cruiser 70 series if you're on a budget
Matt Gyver please don’t tell people to buy jeeps while going off road. Unreliable piece of work it is
This easily could’ve been 15 to 20 separate videos... good job on cutting out the fat and getting directly to the meat...👍 Can’t wait for part 2.
I agree with your point, but for some purposes, the "fat" is quite necessary. Not in this case, but now you made me want a ribeye, with fat!!
An honest answer to an honest sales person
What a legend, years of experience evident as he flies through detail after detail you pick up only sporadically in other videos..
That detail about breathers was very important. Thanks for the information.
I love that your opinions are your own. It is so rare on social media currently.
Understatement of the century - a good puncture repair kit. While a simplistic video this is an awesome starter video. Subscribed!!!
Great detail, Andrew. Especially appreciate how you logically explain the pros and cons of items that are in the same category.
This guy is a legend. Should be a must watch for all new 4wd's
I learnt a say while guiding in Zambia, OVERKILL IS UNDERRATED ... very true to traveling through Africa
Andrew, this is such a great resource. Here are things you MIGHT find you need, and here is how to best determine if/when you need/want them. EXCELLENT!
This is essential viewing for anyone wanting to get into 4x4 driving.
This video is so informative! I’ve learned much more from this single vid than the thousands I’ve watched. Thank you! You’re awesome.
You are so welcome!
Wow!, Being a beginner as a safari driver in Kenya, this video is really helpful in understanding the mighty LC
Thank you so much for this video, Andrew. Though many of your followers are experienced off-roades and overlanders, having this type of video gives one a philosophy as they go about making their first purchases right up to the big ticket items for their rig.
Andrew, this has to be the most pragmatic, useful and interesting review I’ve seen. Very informative - thanks!
Just by watching this, I really can’t wait for my 1990 LC RJ77 this Sept!!! My first LC ever!
David Attenborough and Andrew are similar, because one reason, easy to listen to, also,. coherent, articulate, very intelligent.,last, thoroughly know their stuff inside and out.
Here in east Africa majorly Kenya , Tanzania, Uganda, Southern Ethiopia, somalia,Sudan, south Sudan and Eritrea this is what we always need
It’s like listening to Gordon Ramsay critique off-road rigs. Wonderful information here. Loving all of these videos.
Top bloke, knows his stuff inside out.
Fantastic concept and execution for a video series. This is what they (we) want!!! Tasty stuff.
I get asked about this often as well and always feel like I'm ducking the question when I answer "It depends how you want to use your vehicle". So it's nice hearing the same basic answer from you.
jesus, I havn't seen this dude before, what a pro! love the "most compressors turn electricity into noise" so true
Thank you
For new people to this, this is a very, very good info video… Well done Andrew…
Been trying to work it out, finally got it. This guy is the David Attenborough of 4x4.
Very nice overview of how to get started. So important to ask yourself what you are going to do with vehicle and what is needed to get off on your adventure.
Andrew, you're videos are so under rated! You're an absolute legend. Best knowledge in the industry.
Its nice to watch a clip with 0 bias between brands and basically cherry picking the parts that you know work best.
Another excellent video, love the straight to the point, no BS explanations. Keep up the great work.
This video and part 2 will certainly be very popular. Once gain great video and thank you!
Fantastic! Love the check list approach and just the right level of detail on each subject. Looking forward to part two.
That compressor looks like my Smitty built of the same size. That is a very nice compressor and pumps more air than many small compressors people have in their garage taking up 8 times the space.
Best video ever for me....on 4WD
The method I'm using is just take the vechicle out a lot and see where the limits lie and adjust accordingly. That way you prevent buying unnecessary "upgrades". I mainly use my vehicle on weekends for off roading with planned tours once in a while so I have the luxury to do that. Seen guys with ARB bumpers and expensive lighting getting stuck because they use road tires in the mud :D
This video needs a 2025 reboot, absolutely love it and so much critical knowledge.
I make videos like these every week.
The best kit video he's ever done. Thank you ASPW-
Brilliant video with good information. It's super easy for average punters to make assumptions and blow too much money.
As for air, I killed one of those cheap pumps every eight months for five years (hey they are cheap). Now I've got a nice blue one like yours and it's been going strong for four years buy it's self, and no signs of slowing down. Not over kill IMO.
Hey fella what compressor is it that you're talking about here?
@@DadDiaries The blue ones are ARB.
@@Gee-Wizz ahhh okay I see what you mean lol. I thought you meant a blue version of the red portable pump in the bag. Cheers for replying 👍
No bs , right to point... diff lock is probably the best up grade , Detroit locker limited slip
Excellent video! As a novice to overlanding I found it very informative and helpful as I build out my truck. Future videos expanding on the various topics covered would be great as well.
Andrew, this is one of your best instructional videos! I enjoyed it very much and will strongly consider your advice.
No offense, but I think this is the best video you have made. I love the trip videos, but as someone new to overloading (Building up my truck) this is exactly the type of video I have wanted to see. Great idea. I'll make that playlist now.
you are the GAOT Mr Andrew..i love it
Really really good video Andrew, just loved it. Your info is top notch, your delivery is very pleasing and I enjoy them very much, thank you.
Quiet elaborative!! Nice job my friend!!

Yes, well done here Andrew.
Very accurate and concise.
Nice to see the truth given and not hyped up marketing bs, like some YT channels
Not a bad video champ, just one thing though .... here in Australia we use indicators / blinkers when we go around roundabouts, that way everyone knows what you’re doing 😀👍
I don't. I like to piss everyone off and annoy my viewers :-)
4xoverland 😂
Just goes to show that it is true after all ..... some blokes can’t walk and chew at the same time eh 😂😂😂

Thank you for sharing this content.
Even here on the other side of the world, I have used this information a lot.
Differential locks absolutely help if you're in deep mud, not sure why you'd say otherwise!
I subscribed without watching the video, the comment section was enough.
I just stumbled across your videos! FANTASTiC. What an excellent resource. Thank you. I'm buying an older 4Runner with low miles, and want to set it up for off-road touring.

It’s an amazing axe, and a unique piece, if I could just have one axe , this would be it 👍
Could be one of the best videos you have done.
Fantastic video Andrew. I have been 4x4ing for years and you are summing things up perfectly! Keep up the great work.

Diff breathers are in my opinion, one of if not the most important mod you can install on your 4x4. Especially considering it is a sub 100 dollar mod
Extremely good video, an enormous amount of information for someone like me just getting into this.
Very helpful info! Great opportunity to learn.
"This is a beautiful example of complete and utter overkill...
...and that is why I have it in my vehicle."
Hahaha!

Please do a comparison of Lithium vs Lead Crystal batteries...it's a topic that I'm sure many self-proclaimed overlanders aren't familiar with.
Damn these need to come to the USA
Definetly, Toy is the best choice to buy if you want a vehicle for decades...And the aussie version of the 70 series with V8 is the top of the cake !!
Fantastic video! I've been off-roading for a while but love getting all the basic ideas and principals on each system. Thanks for the content!
Didn’t know David Attenborough went from animal voice overs to outback vehicles. Lol
You are the David Attenborough of the 4x4 world.
I am a poor man with an OLD #SUZUKI #VITARA. Thanks for that video helping NOOBS like myself. Bririlliant
Good video, very informative. I've learnt a lot.
Very good information about the 4wD need for any modify and protection of the car needs for any road conditions thanks for Advice
You give this man a 4x4 and he tell to you what the 4x4 is thinking about ! hahaha :d
[In David Attenborough's voice] "The Toyota Land Cruiser. Earth's mightiest vehicle..."
I love such of his car
But don't have it either, but hoping to have one some day, nice and very clear explanation
Talking about the radiator,I had mine smashed by a branch that was thrown in the mud by someone . Went through the the bash plates, aircon condenser, the intercooler and the radiator.
With an infrequently used winch he could spool it out and in every few months to keep it in check and moving
