I'm so glad you mentioned the white elephant in the room. Weight. So many offroaders go way way over on weight, and don't even mention weight. GVWR is so important. Might want to find a way to shield the synthetic rope from sunlight, since it can deteriorate. Keep up the fantastic videos. So educational, very thankful.

Andrew, love this new Troopy build and the thinking that has gone into it.
Re showering: could you point me to your video on the hot water shower boiler? (it was behind the driver's seat in the Green Troopy and the shower was on the driver's side.) You discussed how one could set the temperature and switch it on about an hour or two before arriving at your overnight stop and the water was ready, set at a preset temperature.
While you obviously still need a boiler, does the EGON water hub replace the function of temperature determination?

Edit: should have watched the video before posting. What size tyres do you have? They look like they might be 255-85r16, which is the size I decided on, they are a true 33 inch, and not too wide, they seem to be getting quite popular in the US where they call them pizza cutters, which they certainly are not, I consider a 7 inch or 7.50 maybe if I was cutting pizza.

I'm looking at building a global Overland vehicle and one thing has been bugging me is the Engine - Diesel or Petrol? my immediate thought was Diesel - just makes sense...
however with the new diesels they cant run on the poor quality high sulfur fuel that is still found in many parts of the world. What are your thoughts here?
Can you still run a diesel - maybe remove Cat/DPF?
Do you switch to Petrol - more expensive, easier to find, more reliable
    thanks

My car is probably 1/3 the weight of yours. The standard suspension is often criticized - but for my kind of driving I like it a lot. It’s my daily driver that I take off-road every once in a while.
    - Meaning, I might change the shocks later but keep the standard coils springs.
    - Why?
    - Because it might be the best compromise for me.

I'm a jeep guy and absolutely love my jeep gladiator - it has everything I need and then some. However, I've has this crazy idea of "what if I took a gladiator platform and turned it into a van?" I've been stewing over it for about a year now and I think the concept would be so cool... Unfortunately in the states we don't have 70 series LC or 110 Defenders (we sorta do, but it's not the same...) and Wranglers and Tacomas rule, which is fine. But we lack the OEM long wheel base 4x4 van type (78 series, 110) and we have to do our best with what we have. Great video Andrew, thanks for sharing!

Hi Andrew I would like to explain my reasoning and you can correct me if I am wrong .The reason for reducing tyre pressure on sand in to create a larger footprint thus reducing the PSI on the surface of the sand .If you have two identical vehicles ,vehicle No 1 has 6inch wide tires vehicle No2 has 12 inch wide tires ,Vehicle No2 already has 2 x the footprint of vehicle No1 and 1/2 the PSI touching the surface, So if you reduce the air pressure in vehicle No1 to 12psi creating a larger foot print surely you would have to reduce the tyre pressure on vehicle No2 buy far less to create the same foot print and PSI on the surface of the sand. In 1982 I had a Holden jackaroo Diesel with standard tires I had to let the tires down to 12psi on the sand ,after replacing the wheels and tires with a much larger size (not Sur of the size) I only had to let the tires down to 18 psi and it was unstoppable on the san. looking forward to your reply.

I like your van. 👌👌 It's good to know that even with your decades of extensive experience building & fitting out offroad vehicles,... err vans, 😁 you still don't get it right. For me, after 4yrs since I fittout my vehicle, I now want to change it to suit my style of 4WD touring better. Changing things on a 4WD, might not seem like a big deal to you, or for a lot of RUclipsrs, where many are sponsored, and/or given these products for free. But for a mere mortal like myself, each & every item fitted to my 4WD, is hard earned, and if it needs to be changed, it seems like a huge waste of money. But even so, it needs to be done to make the improvements. Looking forward to the interior segment. 👍

Great presentation of the vehicle, but I do have one question you might enlighten me. You were speaking about how well your snorkel worked keeping your air filter clean. Cheers!

Hi Andrew, I'm running 255/85r16 Toyo MT on my Colorado, partly influenced by you and cannot fault them. Bought online at roughly $260ea + fitting (2 years ago) and they have served me well. The colorado on the other hand... Not sure if you have a grudge against Toyo though because you didn't mention them?
Also regarding the cyclonic filter, when you need to upgrade i.e. Safari Snorkel, have you thought about using a Donaldson Cyclonic Head to retain the dust filtration? I know they have models that would be more than suffice for the airflow requirements, space and or aesthetics would be the only limiting factor.

  • @marcocoltelli5975
    @marcocoltelli5975 Год назад +1

YES, the 255/85 R16 is the best size on a land cruiser, but very difficult to find, here in Italy only BFgoodridge and Toyo sell them, and only with mud design, but is really the best measure for everything.

  • @SteveBurns80

Firstly, congrats on a fantastically built vehicle, best one yet.
I do love seeing you on the tracks such as the Canning Stock ect, but it pains me to see that you don't push your "solid axle vehicles" to their full potential on more technical tracks, I get it that you're not in it for the sake of "going over that pile of rocks", but you must think of it as "training" you need to practise this in semi controlled environment to find out what you and you vehicle are capable of. So many people like yourself will miss out on some amazing camps and rugged locations because they're not willing or confident in going over that "pile of rocks" .
Go on, get out of your comfort zone, Andrew. Otherwise, your argument on why you "prefer solid axles" is completely bogus.
Because, I'm yet to see any of your 4wding trips that requires anything more than an non modfied IFS vehicle.
I also think it wouldn't hurt your channel to mix in some really technically challenging driving and locations, every now and then.
    Regards, Steve.

So glad someone is addressing weight. It’s way too common to build overweight 4wds these days. Weight on a 4WD multiplies every force on every piece of the vehicle, increasing wear, sapping fuel and horsepower and decreasing floatation. Where the average Ute tourer now days takes 4 major structures, cab, tray, canopy, RTT to achieve 3 tasks, driving, storage and sleeping, the troopy or ‘van’ effectively allows this to be achieved in one structure meaning less weight. Was not surprised this came after the dream tourer

Also I’d be careful about recommending catch cans! If, if you fit a catch can and your engine has been tuned or remapped, well there is a danger of a rear main engine seal or turbo seal failure! This can happen if there becomes a blockage in any of the hoses associated with the catch can or the catch can itself! Now before the warriors wake up, this is a real risk as when the engine gets tuned or remapped the blow by increases expediently thus increasing the crank case pressure. Now if, and it’s a big possibility, you develop a blockage in the catch can, well this scenario most likely will develop. Now regards the oil vapour issue. If you have tuned the engine, it’s a must that you do a EGR delete. This will immediately stop the exhaust gases entering the intake system. So it eliminates the carbon build up inside the intake manifold. Which happens when hot exhaust bypass gas mixing with oil vapour. So the oil vapour that enters the engine is no longer an issue. In fact once an EGR delete is performed, the engine oil remains nearly brandnew between oil changes. To sum up. If the engine is in the standard configuration, yes a catch can is recommended however once a performance tune is done……take it out!!!! Cheers

    Masterclass?
A masterclass is a lesson where someone who is an expert at something such as dancing or music gives advice to a group of good students.
Maybe just - my best effort building a Landcruiser for my application?
In Australia we’d usually leave it to someone else to tell us how good we are. If they think so.
We don’t usually say it about ourselves.
Just that calling it a masterclass (about yourself) sounds a little cocky or conceited.
    That’s all I was saying.

Just watching your on the troopy like most of what like what have to say about suspension but made a mistake clear up progressive rate front coil spring the coil either get thinner coil material at the 2 to 3 turns at the top of coils or coil gap is reduced. So main function isn’t ride generally they tend to bunch up the top coils at ride height often couple of months use so mainly for droop of suspension and keep coils captive with shock length.
How ever parabolic springs are two stage springs yes they ride on hwy latest gimmick my concern is eye each end material drawn out ie gets thinner more likely to break eye over time so the issue is after market service when you are in Katherine nt or out back where multi leaf ie original leaf springs can be reset and strengthened have half a chance dropping in a main leaf second hand in back on the road day or so not a week or more. Daily use I would think as your daily that would remove to much so ride would not alter to much so in conclusion if springs on the back where strengthened top stage only away from over load at the bottom same result but more chance self rescue due more strength under eyes of springs.
Nice to see that we have set up vehicles to what task is needed mainly i now call the 4x4 aftermarket suppliers Danoz direct can’t just suspension have more bells and whistles than one needs haha.
Liked your Toyota comparison ie troopy dual cab an so forth 105 series also and keeping weight under gvm the new changes to gvms on Toyota will help a little more so can customise springs more note suspension hasn’t changed much is 100 years coils and leaf springs only certain things can be done strengthening and shaping shock technologies hasn’t changed from bump to rebound cyclinder with plunger hopefully had a little suspension education note take set of koni 88 series shocks to was it Namibia great old tech still works no gas works better with heavy coils no gas pressure against bump thanks for hopefully reading my rant haha ray own a spring works

Regarding the oil catch can, the oil vapour is not the problem and if you were to open your intercooler you will find it quite clean (after 150k+ kms), some would say beneficial to lubricating the turbine intake fins.
The issue arises were the oil vapour and EGR valve meet at the inlet manifold at the top centre of the engine. The carbon and oil create the sludge and build up. Have a look at turning the valves off electronically immediately and you can leave the catch can off.
    Cheers 🍻

Your 100% correct. Andrew is 100% wrong. Sorry Andrew. Catch can catches oil vapour yes, but this was never a intercooler issue. Its EGR. Exhaust Gas Recycling. Mixing exhaust with oil mist = tar sludge. Your intake will be fithy within 30k kms easily. For the record my NT Pajero with 200k kms, had the front mount intercooler ( which is worse for pooling oil mist) removed for cleaning. It was spotless, no cleaning needed. As for the EGR 😁, lets just say my Paj breaths clean air. Another benefit, your oil will still be golden colour even after 7000kms. So guys, look at your EGR and dont waste money on catch cans. If anything, the mist lubricates your turbo impeller ( as it is introduced before the turbo) and valve stems.

Always loved your channel Andrew, and absolutely love your build videos. And no I'm not insulted that most patrol are owned by bogans I know they are haha. I own one and it does make me feel bogan sometimes 🤣🤣. Hope you have a great week 👍

Headlamps … I went for the cheaper option. Did a lot of research and replaced the H4 halogen bulbs with LED’s. No disappointment for the price paid. Yes, yours are probably better, but my option fit my budget and needs well.

Beautiful and well thought out build to your needs! I remember you doing a video a while back say how BFG’s were the best tires you’ve used with no failures. Isn’t there a BFG tire that’ll fit your needs?

absolutely amazing video. Well explained and with some fun it makes it even better to watch. very very interesting is your tire issue. Yes exactly... the 255/85-16 would be the perfect tire size but just MT's are available, here in Germany too. But going for 265 or 235 or what ever, the tire diameter gets smaller. For me a problem due to the already quiet short 5th gear. so I went for the 285/75-16 (BFG AT) even when they are to wide for me too.

Van life with ASPW. 😁 Wanting to own the best 4WD that suits you is a never ending improvement. It's an ongoing series of mini-projects. I am looking at making major changes to my existing setup. This is due to knowing better what suits my needs, and the emergence of new gear. Driving this need for change is to have better ease of usability, improve access, & reduce weight. My current setup at the back of my 80 Series, are double side-by-side drawers w/a chest style fridge on a fridge slide on the top left side. 3 yrs of use have shown some flaws. Even though my 80 Series only have a modest 2" lift, w/o a drop slide, it is difficult to access the entire interior of the fridge w/o using a step stool. And the upper tailgate gets in the way of fully opening the lids. I'm looking to changing this to a double drawer in a stacked configuration, w/an upright fridge on the left sitting on the floor. This should gives us immensely better access to the fridge, & reduced weight by eliminating the need for a slide, & using a lighter upright fridge. Yup, never ending vehicle projects. 😒 Cha-ching 💰💲💰💲
