I agree with you, there should be reliability and quality standards that the US and EU should make mandatory. The reason why they don't do that, I think, is that American and European manufacturers would have a hard time competing with the Japanese and Koreans on these parameters. Most American cars would probably need to be retired from the market entirely, probably every Tesla (which would make me happy, but would make upset a lot of people). Still get governments using current Land Rover products, just not in the same environment as LC’s and for a long time when the old defender was around it was used in the same environments as the LC is now. Also to say anything Land Rover is the least respected off roader is a bit silly, especially when a new L461 Range Rover hosts better off road stats than a new LC300. The brand that makes the least respected off roaders if you can even call them that is BMW with the X range. And even with the reliability nonsense Land Rover have going on you have to give them credit for keeping the capability a 4x4/SUV should have across the entire range, with even the Evoque even with how up market they’ve gone.

so I was in Sudan for 3 months and the un compound in Khartoum which was a couple city blocks and all the way around was nothing but toyota land cruisers hundreds.
I fell in love with this car since I was 5-6 years old. At that time I knew it simply as Land Cruiser. Today I’m 30 and it has remained my dream car😍😍😍
Fascinating tour. Awesome concept for the video and execution! P.S. TOYOTA please homologate a 70 series for US market. Please.
I wish dude. Can't get past safety regulations I'm sure.
the lc prado has diesel or v6 else where sold as the lexus GX 460 v8 gas hog luxury wagon could be sold as a basic lc in the US as toyota priced the lc200 out of the us market
Toyota can make a "Landcruiser reliable vehicle" or a vehicle that can pass U.S and/or EU regulations.
Pick one.
If it had to be homoligated to the US market , it would resemble a ford F250 swb or dodge ram , with all the std crap you get with all the electronic gizmos and the need for 57 different airbags in the cabin and the need to fart talcum powder from a petrol engine , no it wont happen .

I own a 76 series 4.2 diesel. It’s 11 years old and still not outdated. I can honestly say I don’t need another vehicle…..ever.
Very interesting video: I'm thinking now the Top Gear RUclips channel is now actually better than the programme.
It's the Magazine department who makes video when the main show is off the air.
You can still buy these new in Dubai direct from the Toyota dealership. Same with the Nissan Safari Patrol

They have been the back bone of our farming and agricultural sectors for years.

And the most important thing is, that basically every vehicle mechanic in the middle of nowhere can fix the Land Cruiser and has spare parts for it, although sometimes they are not original. I ordered so many of those Land Cruisers from TGS!!!
Wait a normal person can buy one
@@lonelypuppy8041 If you are lucky you can probably find one somewhere on the second hand market. I work for International Humanitarian Aid Organisations in logistics so I was also in charge of ordering/buying those vehicles.
@@BadGodesberger1963 oh so after the vehicles retired they get sold to the used car market . Also I appreciate what you do
@@lonelypuppy8041 Sometimes, after the end of a project, we hand them over to a project partner, sometimes we can sell them to local bidders in an auction. In African countries you can sometimes find local Toyota car dealers who are selling the Series 70 model, too. But mostly they are imported from Dubai or other Arab countries. But those cars are not the same like those from Gibraltar. Those are made espacially for Africa and TGS is the only certified car dealer for Africa. Other cars soon have big issues with the road and weather conditions in Africa, like gearboxes, brakes and chassis!!! I never asked if TGS is selling vehicles to private customers.
@@BadGodesberger1963 thank you for work in the aid organization... However I don't think TGS would sell to a private citizen. Here in Cameroon we mostly have those from Dubai as you mentioned.
Thank you top gear for bringing land cruiser to the spotlight, especially the 70 series

You could not be anymore right 😆 you took the words out of my mouth
turbos are great for the power, terrible for durability
Brilliant, powerful video. Hats off. That penultimate sentence got me emotional.
There is reason why Land Cruiser is THE most respected off-roader that there is meanwhile Land Rover is the LEAST respected off-roader 🤣.
Not a single NGO, government buys Ranger Rovers and Defenders.
thats for sure lc = no air springs , no ind rear axles" for a smooth ride and leg room for the 3rd row" , no sun roofs , no 2nd row ent screens .6 cameras etc...........
slow down... they used to buy Old Defenders when they were still being made, this is the only reason. Agree that Land Rover nowadays are 100% Crap.
These were/are very popular in Venezuela 🇻🇪, Colombia 🇨🇴 and Australia 🇦🇺, I used to own a short chassis 94 model with a 4.5 24 valve petrol engine carburated and it was a beast…
I would be like a kid in a candy store if I saw all of those LC’s, Hiluxes, and Prados 😂. Sadly, we dont get the 70 series or the Hilux (which I prefer over the Tacoma) here in the states. My 2011 GX460 is close enough to a Prado I guess lol. Amazing video 🙏🏼
lol me too bud!
Pretty sure they sold the LandCruiser wagons rebadged as a Lexus
GX is Prado. Unfortunately we don’t get the diesel version of it in US. Drove one in SE Asia and that torque is awesome.
The defender may have pioneered this type of offroad vehicles, but toyota perfected it. Would really love to own one someday. Its literally very expensive here in the PH, since these things are not officially sold by the local toyota, these are sold in the grey market by importers which jacks up the price, where regulations cant stop them from overpricing it
I sell a LX 79 v6 Petrol single cab that I had here in Venezuela and I loved it. Those 70 series are very used here in my country, a car that is simple, practical and reliable, without the need of technology. Soon I will get a Land Cruiser again, might be the 76 or 79.
Was your Land Cruiser assembled in South America?
Toyota used to assembly Land Cruiser 70 series a couple years ago. Can't tell if after embargo by US Government still on operation.

Bought a brand new 78 series in Australia 3 months ago. Best decision I have ever made. So lucky that we can still buy them for personal use, but not sure for how much longer.
I also want to buy one how do i buy one
For a long time hopefully, just as long as the government does not mandate EVs
EDIT: Now that Toyota has released the 70 Series update with the 1GD 2.8 diesel in Euro 6 form (i.e. Adblue) looks like the 70 Series is here to stay, at least in Australia for a number of years more.
I used to ride these. Windshield have permanently installed armored glass, but the doors have removable armored kevlar panels. Strong v8 engines.
I'd love to buy one for personal use. Electronics gone, can fix it yourself like before without software updates and security.
One day, our civilization will be no more. But the 70-series will be remembered in legend and myth, much as we still talk of the Charon's ferryboat, the Argo, or the Titanic.
As a URJ200-series owner, that gave me goosebumps.
No stupid electronics, just basic rugged mechanics, can run forever on any kind of terrain.
This vehicle was no doubt built for Africa . From the Sahara Desert , to the Western Sahel , all the way to the Maasai Mara and the Serengeti, down South to the River Limpopo and finally into the Kalahari Desert ; there is just one vehicle that thrives. The Toyota Land cruiser J 70 .
its built for australia
Drove these in PNG 3 years ago through the jungles, mountains and rivers. Alongside the skyline JDM scene, the ten seater manual with bulllbar is also a dream car.
Fun fact, they are produced in Portugal but they are not sold in Europe because they don't comply with safety and emissions norms.

Land Cruisers are still being used in plenty of government and private agencies in my country. Most of the time, they have to go deep in the mountains or forest in unprepared terrain... for weeks without coming back.
But I do wonder if there is a way for Toyota to modernize the engine to meet emissions standards... eventually they will come under pressure.
They also sell the 200 and 300 series which are modern with much better emissions etc.

They are powerful and practical Toyota Land Cruisers
The Toyota Land Cruiser is certainly bulletproof and reliable! However here in the EU market they are EXTREMELY rare, because of:
1. Environmental initiatives
2. Competition, the EU already has plenty of competitors that offer better comfort, good value for money and flexibility (they can be armored, or modified).
3. Driving appeal, the Land Cruiser is perfect for emergency services, or military. NOT for civilians. Civilians/private customers won't enjoy driving a Land cruiser as they daily vehicle, especially in the EU. Heavy weight and fuel consumption.
I've noticed in Belgium the Land Cruiser is still used by the military and the towing services.
Greetings from Belgium!
Am happy Tanzania 🇹🇿 is mentioned in a Gilbratar shot video 😂😂😂❤❤❤❤
