The Alu-Cab THOR Conversion Walkthrough

- The Alu-Cab THOR Roof Conversion, designed for the Land Cruiser 76 series. The Thor Conversion is Alu-Cab’s latest 2-sleeper overland solution.
When it comes to overlanding, the Land Cruiser 76, is considered to be one of the best overlanding vehicles available. They are strong, capable are reliable, which are important points to consider when overlanding.
The THOR roof takes seconds to unlatch and open and can also be closed with your bedding in place. Solar panels and roof trays can be added to the roof, however be mindful of weight and placement of products as additional weight will make opening of your roof more difficult.
Universal bolt-in side boxes can be added as an accessory to your vehicle by simply replacing the back windows. The boxes can be added as an empty cupboard or the Thor Kitchen and Thor Recovery cupboard can be installed.
Overlanding has never been so easy, so convenient, and so unbelievably capable.

That would be the holy grail here in the USA
Well said
I have to say, this is the most complete convient setup I've seen in a long time. Even though I don't own a vehicle like this, if I ever get a chance this would be it. SA engineering at it's best
Thank you, Gert!
Goodness me. You guys have just shifted the earth!
I nearly died of jealously watching this..... awesome work. Dream set-up.
Really like the molle panels! Sooooo glad you guys are now doing full size pick up trucks here in the US!!! Ordering soon.
Awesome! Thank you!
Been waiting to see a 76 conversion , but , wish it was a bit more low profile . 10cm thickness the most . At the moment it's a bit too much . But so glad that you have started making one . Once you made a low profile I will buy one for sure .
Game changer...hope some of these products (eg, inside bench storage) find their way into the 78 series too
That's the plan!
Alu-Cab some companies may try to imitate you but they will never come closer to your innovativeness I'm really proud of you guys, this is the epitome of thinking outside the box, I will one day own one of you roof-tops tent and go fishing somewhere in Umkhomazi river or Zambezi river
Thank you very much for the kind words! 😄💪
In the 70's and 80's I had an old Series 2 Landie which, inbetween breaking down, I used for Sodwana diving trips and to get to obscure spots on the Wild Coast. No sophisticated gear in those days. Left SA for Oz 25 years ago and I have had a number of four wheel drives and camping gear and I am continually amazed by how superior in terms of innovation the SA gear is.Alucab is streets ahead of what we can get here. Gets expensive bringing in your gear but I do have 4 of the ammo boxes!
The good old days 😄 thanks for the kind words.
You guys would kill in the U.S. market. Give us more options than the ursa minor!
The US can only import 1998 or older LC’s 😔
@@treedeblue 25yr olds yes. By the time you do that its not worth it. I was talking about an adaptation for our vehicles
@@wildcatoutdoors I agree this guy is selling a 1992 Troopy with the Hercules top and mild inside build for $75k crazy
Looks like a great product guys! Alu Cab always innovating and pushing the envelope, huge respect! Would love one for an LC 200 😂 keep up the amazing work!
Thanks, Edward!
If you have one in the pipeline, I would sell my left leg for a new Prado or LC300 conversion in Australia 😉
Love your work guys
Not at this stage, unfortunately. But, we'll keep it in mind!
Wow that is a great conversion guys.... I'm about to buy a LC 76, maybe I might ship it to South Africa to have that conversion 😂 🤔
Nice job 👍
Not a bad idea! We're ready when you are.
can you please make this for the 2023 US Toyota Sequoia
If you can do this to a 76, I’d love to see it on a JL Wrangler. Just replace the back half of the roll bar and create a full top replacement. This top could be like the defender 100 Top conversion. It would allow customers to switch back to OEM if need. I'd buy one instantly.
Ursa Minor does this
@@dallasvanwyk True the Ursa is a fantastic set up. However, there are several shortcoming for me, that I cannot live with. The Ursa, only has a small port to get up stairs, or allow stand up room....for one person. Ursa does not alter the roll bar, thus reducing the ability to have a larger panel, or more panels to get upstairs. They did do one top with better access to the bed area for Dan Grec, but that have said they will never do it again. Even though the Ursa is nice, I prefer the functionality of the Alu-Cab much more. The way the AC-Thor bed fold completely up increases the living area immensely. Not to mention that outside configurability that for me, surpasses Ursa's.
100% - A Jeep JLU Version is needed!
Awesome and thoughtful conversation...will certainly contact Alu-Cab👏👌
Hoping to have the same conversion on the LC200….waiting !
Not possible with LC200 even if you remove both rows of seat. I went to the factory the roof is not suitable
I'm a Landcruse fan by the way😊
OMG this build is brilliant!
Excellent build, you must have used many brain cells thanks for sharing
It's a hugely popular vehicle in both South Africa & Australia . Currently waiting times for Aussies is up to 2 yrs. This hopefully will likely coincide with a massive refresh , due now & possibly the Toyota LC 300's oiler in single turbo form likely to be shoe horned in to replace the V8 Oiler which has apparently now ceased production. Japan & some markets will get the Prado's 2.8 diesel , other markets a petrol .
damn! the best set-up ive ever seen! New sub here... more vids man! nice!
Thank you! We'll keep 'em coming!

In America, the 'A' pillar surrounds the windshield.
The 'B' pillar is at the rear of the front door.
The 'C' pillar surrounds the rear window.
On a drop-windshield vehicle such as some Jeep models, the 'A' pillar is non-existent, but the 'B' pillar is still at the rear of the front door.
.
Did you get all that?
.
An aside:
Some sedans eliminate the 'B' pillar for a stylish 'open' look and to facilitate rear-seat passenger access.
Many convertibles eliminate both the 'B' and 'C' pillars... relying on the windshield to support the vehicle in a roll-over wreck (not my first choice).

We paint our containers:
* Orange is medical gear.
* Blue is water-purification and cooking.
* Red (Craftsman!) is tools.
Clothing and food in opaque flip-top crates.
.
2003, we converted a 1996 Ford CF8000 commercial truck to our concept of an ExpeditionVehicle.
GVWR -- 29,000#.
Weight across the scale -- 14,000#... giving a nice seven-ton cushion for cargo.
Nearly two decades full-time live-aboard.
Constantly evolving, we experiment then eliminate the non-essential.
I would love to do a 2500 4x4 Chevy Suburban like this! Gonna have to hit the lottery first😭!!!
Again fantastic work! Have you guys done a Jeep Gladiator conversion?
Not yet! We have a Canopy and a Canopy Camper available for the Jeep Gladiator.
Very nice. I wonder how wind would effect the tent. That is a huge sail essentially. I’ve seen others with less height roof tents struggle when the wind comes up. Other than that it’s a beautiful rig. Thanks for sharing.
The tent holds up excellently in the wind. Speaking out of a night of windy experience in the Thor (Jana). We’d always advise to park the vehicle with its nose it the wind so that the wind flows over the tent shell.
We need this one for our Jeep Wrangler JL! :-)
Awesome job guys and something I am genuinely considering for my own LC S76 wagon. The only thing holding me back is the commitment to cutting the roof off. There's no coming back. Or is there in your view?
I.e; Assuming I'm considering selling the vehicle in the future - once my adventurous days ultimately come to an end - I'm conscious of the modification damaging the end sale price, given it would no longer be in its original state.
It would be a major job welding a roof back on!
What do you say to folk like me who are sitting on the fence?
It would be easy if I chose never to sell the old girl. Hmm, maybe I just answered my own question! Lol
Once again, awesome design guys. I love it.
What a great job. I'm sure you enjoyed the tuning of this car as much as camping outside. Your car is absolutely amazing. I want to take your car and go camping too. Juste one question: The "Troopy" isn't a better solution ? Is it roomier than this version ? i'm not really familiar with Land Cruiser range. Kisses from New-Caledonia
Hi there, yes the Troopy definitely has more room in the back than the 76 series. But it depends on the type of touring you want to do, because the Troopy is also a bit slower than the 76 series with the 4.5 litre V8 engine.
thank you for sharing detailed video
buen día tremenda configuración primera vez que veo algo así, solo falto el servicio ese trabajo lo realizó el distribuidor Alu-Cab? me puede brindar información? gracias.
Good day Hector, this conversion can be done by our dealers and distributors worldwide. You can find your nearest dealer by using the dealer locator on our website: www.alu-cab.com/dealer-locator/
Awesome set up!
Please make a conversion that is suitable for the new 4 runners✌🏼
tent 'material' insulated Enough for winter temperatures in Canada?...( potential low temps.-20+ C ). Heater' option in this 76 series?.. cheers from Canada!
Yup! The tent material is dual-layered for better insulation. A small diesel heater should work great.
Hi, thank you your interesting video. I was wondering to know shall we do something for 200 series Landcruiser?
Hi there, no it is not something we will be doing for the 200 series at this stage.
Lutely briliant. Have you considered usung the Mahindra Scorpio and Scorpio N as platforms? Very reliable and simple platforms.
Not at this stage!
What wheels are these on the 76? Are those Beadlocks ? What brand are these .. Thank you
What an incredible set up. Is it possible to fit the gullwing attachments without the roof as a first phase?
Hi David, thank you! Yes, it is absolutely possible to fit the Side Window Boxes without the roof www.alu-cab.com/product/side-window-boxes-to-suit-the-land-cruiser-76/
Amazing. Hope those cabinets will be available stateside for my imported 70-series!
Dies anyone know what is brand of rear bumper?
Rear bumper is a Gobi-X (South Africa) replacement bumper. There are different variations or configurations.
Nice!! Very nice!! I was waiting for the shorter platform roof conversions. It’s a pity we don’t get the 70 series here in the USA but as someone suggested one for the Jeep JL, or a Ford Bronco or a 4Runner would sell like hot cakes. Luckily we might get the Ineos Grenadier here in 2023. Highly request you to please build something similar for the Grenadier.
Also, quick question..what’s the net weight increase of this conversion without accounting for the awning, shower cube and all other add ons. Just the camper conversion..??
Fun fact, you can import a HZJ77 which is almost identical to the J76 structurally from the firewall back.
@@AFnic yeah. And I love the 1HZ engine. But a. Finding one without rust is near nigh impossible and b. The engine is a bit slow for modern day speeds. But a beast off-road
Thank you! We’re definitely thinking about other conversions. The weight it 130kg.
Why not having this set up in a trophy? Just wondering on the benefits of this set up in Lc76
Perhaps you could build a version for the 200 series Land Cruiser?
We’re looking into it 😄
@@alu_cab it’s the newest available Land Cruiser in North America. 70 series have to be 15-25 years old here, so no wide appeal for the masses.
Awesome development will these be for the Australian market?
Thanks Craig, yes - they are available in the Australian market from Ironman 4x4 branches.
Is Alu-cab considering a conversion for the upcoming Ineos Grenadier?
We are waiting to see the Grenadier in person and then we will look into developing after market accessories for it.
@Alu-Cab Love how you guys keep innovating! True industry leaders. Side question. What adhesive did you use to glue that piece of rubber on to the real tailgate to stop it from hitting the rear Tyre carrier?
Thank you! Going to find out about the adhesive and get back to you.
2003, we converted a 1996 Ford CF8000 commercial truck to our concept of an ExpeditionVehicle.
We used Vulcum 116.
.
Nearly two decades full-time live-aboard, our Vulcum 116 remains soft and pliable.
.
Never use silicone sealer.
It has zero-zero-zero stretch.
On vehicles with shifting panels (hint -- all of them), silicone instantly shears, necessitating a second application, then inevitably, a fifteenth.
It's a rubber foam weatherstrip. Like this: www.amazon.com/Rubber-Weatherseal-Stick-Weather-Strip/dp/B000BQMMVI
@@alu_cab Legend Thanks! Oh! forgot to ask, are you planning to make the Drawer gull wings stand alone? There has been a lot of talk about it on the FB groups, there is definitely a market for it on their own.
04:48
In America, each ingredient pulls (at minimum) double-duty.
A steel crate of dog-food or tools makes a dandy 'steppy'.
Hi, very nice setup! I live in Patagonia, and it is very difficult to get a Land Cruisers here. Any chance to develop this products for the Mitsubishi Pajero?
Congrats again and keep going!
Not at this stage, unfortunately. But, we'll keep that in mind!
Very cool!
Will you release something like this for the grenadier?
Any plans on ever making this for a 80 series? Or can this be modified to fit on a 80 series?
Any possibility of fitting a similar conversion on a LR d3/4? They have glass roofs so no cutting required 👍
Something to consider!
Nice rig. Can you do the same roof-conversion kit for wrangler?
Not at this stage, but never say never!
@@alu_cab Sounds good! Looking forward to see your product. It seems demand for Ursa Minor J30 so high so would be nice to have alternative ))
Can you purchase just the side boxes to replace the side back windows?
Looks awesome!!
Thanks guys!
Could I see a 76 with a Thor conversion in or near JHB?
beautiful vehicle😍 if only I had the money😅😂
How much wind can handle the thor conversion?
Is this the side box kitchen unit sold with the gulwing sidebox or the stuff in the ammo box.
Hi there! Side Window Boxes are ordered empty with the option of adding the following accessories as optional extras:
Side Box Kitchen Kit
Recovery Molle Plate

@@alu_cab awesome can I order these from you
It's about time ARB designd a new bumper for the Toyota 70series. A better looking, more stylish curves. I mean make it look more modern.
Rocking that stock raised air intake I see.
Edit: Those rims look awesome.
What brand and model are they?
It reminds me of Mickey thompson rims.
Great job 👍🏻
아주 좋은 캠핑카~
Looking really great - will those cupboards fit on the 78 Troopy series?
We’re busy looking into offering them for the 78, yes 😄
Big like
Amazing
Hyenas and lions?! That's crazy
@alu-cab Will the side boxes be available for the troopy? Would love one in addition to the Hercules conversion.
We are working on that! Stay tuned 😄
Like to know what the vehicle weight is fully kitted out.
18:34
Or trip into the latrine.
Hey, it could happen...
That awesome! Are the cupboards accessible from the inside as well?
Hey John! No, they are not accessible from the inside at this stage. We are developing molle panels to bolt onto the cupboards on the inside.
@Alu-Cab. Are there cupboards for a 78 series?
If none exists, any plans for producing them for troopie?
I’m looking to buy a troopy they cost around $27000 the alu cab roof top tent cost around $ 12000 how
2x alu cab = one troopy 🤨🤨🤨🤨
Who's doing the cutting and fitting.
Do you need accredited fitment centers to do it, do it yourself or are Allu Cab do it themselves now again.
As I understand from the Troopy roof top conversion Allu Cab does not fit them but only built them.
Your manufacturing succeeded and only concern now are exporting.
Hi guys, the fitment can be done by any trusted fitment center or Alu-Cab dealer with the use of our fitment manual (www.alu-cab.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Thor-roof-conversion-to-Landcruiser-76-series-Fitment-Instructions-1-1.pdf). You are correct, we have gone from doing custom fitments to becoming a manufacturing plant that offers a complete solution in various formats that allow fitment centers around the world to offer complete turnkey solutions utilizing one brand.
Do you have future plans to do this with the LC200/LC300?
We’ve been thinking about the LC200. Stay tuned!
Will there be a conversion kit for Isuzu mux? Cheers
Not at this stage. But we do have other products available for the D-Max like the Canopy and Gen 3.1 rooftop tent.
Do you mind sharing this camp site location (looks like cedarberg?) but would love to know exact spot.
Hi Russel, unfortunately the location is not open for camping, but it is called the Secret Cederberg, and day trips can be organized via Mount Ceder. We would highly recommend a visit! www.mountceder.co.za/
@@alu_cab Ok great, i appreciated the speedy reply!
You didn't show the rear seats, are they still useable or not?
They have been taken out, as we have chosen to configure this interior build without them. But it is possible to keep them in after the conversion has taken place.
I really expected a 4 door to be a 4 seater.
Hi there, you can keep the backseats in. Up to you how you configure the interior.
Do you even need half of that if you are not on a NATGEO assignment??
😂 well, when you are on long term trips on the road, comfort is key! We’ve learnt over the past 20 years or so of overlanding in Africa that you can never be too prepared. But you can of course, start with the basics and opt to keep it simple.
Come for supported..offroad and campers community.,.done subscribed..
Welcome aboard!
Is this available for the 80 series ?
Hi Hernan, unfortunately it is not.
How difficult is it to install the rooftop extension? I'm planning for my little project but not sure if I can find someone who could do the professional job for me...
Hi there, we have dealers with trusted fitment centers all across the globe. They just need to follow the fitment instructions to perform the roof conversion.
@@alu_cab thanks for the reply, I'm based in Oman but I guess I can do it in Dubai if there is any centers there..
@@marinesecondofficer520 actually we do have a centre in Oman. You can contact Al’saada Group ☺️
what’s price of this aproximately
Hi Zurab, it depends where you are located. If you send us an email to queries@alu-cab.co.za we would be able to assist with a cost estimate. Thanks!
@@alu_cab I think I'm so far from you .
I'm from Georgia (country)
Soooooo much money!
Why not use a troopy?
Hi Brad, we have the Hercules Roof Conversion for the 78 series. We wanted to manufacture a roof conversion for the 76 too because it is a extremely capable and compact vehicle for overlanding.
...all that weight, up so high...
That has to be over 200KG up on the roof. The quality is beautiful as usual from you guys, but the concept of this much roof height weight on an already tall vehicle seems unsafe to me.
Hi there, the conversion weighs 130kg and adds 270mm to the roof. It does not add much more height and weight than a rooftop tent would.
@@alu_cab that seems fine, because you are removing the old skin and structure, so there is surely 30 - 40kg that was removed, bringing you to about 90-100 overall weight added. That's pretty light for what you are offering.
However, 2 full jerry cans, a high lift jack, shower cube, light bar, awning, and brackets for all those things. That's easily another 120kg.
I don't want to discredit you guys, I love your stuff and attention to detail. But that is a lot of weight!
Looks like a great product, just a pity about the video; less talking more visuals next time please
Hi Christoff, this is just an overview. Is there any specific aspects you would like us to focus on with more visuals? We’d gladly film short videos on them.
🤯
Size of the Bed please
Sleeping space in tent: 2220 X 1140mm
Will the molle panels for the rear doors be available online or via Alu-cab Australia?
Yes, they’ll be available through Alu-Cab Australia as soon as they are ready for order.
So much heavy weight so high. All that weight will pull you on any angle specially side.
I get you’re trying to promote all your products but this is supposed to be a review of the Thor but there is so much crap attached to it that we can’t see how it interfaces with the roof.
way to much weight on the roof, that thing would wobble, centre of gravity too high
Okay, I’m going to just come out and say it… I’m disappointed. I was really hoping this would be designed around 4-person (2 adults/2kids) camping in mind. The overall height doesn’t seem to be lower then the 78 conversion. Additionally I’m willing to bet the weight of the pop-top conversion is more then a quality rtt and pair of rhino cross bars.
Really why do this type of build to a 76 vs a 78?
To finish off, creativity and craftsmanship look amazing.
Could not agree more. These builds are getting out of hand. The weight upgrade needed for this would prevent it from tackling any really hard hill climbs or tracks. So it is an overlander, in which case you could easily tow a small trailer or camper of you liking. Great enginuity but better ways to spend 250k.
Where's the rest of your troopy???? Lol
I wanted to watch this entire video. But DAMN! You won't shut up! Just show the thing.
This is a walkthrough video, which is used to fully explain all the details and aspects of the product.
New drinking game:
* slam one back each time he says "its elf".
Any time he says "its elf" twice in a sentence, last one to gulp buys the next round.
you forgot to add- horrible to drive, poorly designed, under equipped and stupidly over priced.... Most over rated 4x4 in the world.
What a joke, all that weight up on the roof it would roll very easily on its Lid..LOL
The weight is not much more than a normal rooftop tent would be. It adds 130kg to the vehicle. We would always recommend to have after market off-road suspension installed when converting your vehicle and adding additional weight.
