I am from India and follow quite closely the very many discussions on the state of affairs in Pakistan. Without exception, they are detailed in diagnosis but practically nil on the remedial measures (macro-micro, short-term/long term) that are needed and the hard trade offs they would entail. I have a lot of appreciation for what Dr Hoodhbhoy has stated, his observations about Pak diaspora overseas is right on. I am a Pak American and American educated engineer, and belong to a generation which came to states in the 80’s, and back then we had good number of Pak students coming for higher education and the numbers were comparable to the Indian students, but today there is no comparison, particularly in the IT industry the Indians have dominated completely. It’s clear that there are remarkable differences between the education curriculum and standards between the two countries which is the main reason for such a disparity. The sooner it’s fixed the better. Today the Pak youth has lost hope due to myriad of reasons: bad law & order, lack of opportunities, no interest on the part of people running the country to emphasize on education and upgrading the curriculum, political instability preventing any meaningful investment, erosion of every institution due to constant meddling by stronger forces, etc.
It pains me to see that Pakistan is in a constant decline in terms of producing better scientists, engineers and doctors. The Pak community in America is still highly educated but there are areas we have completely lost to the competition, just to throw some numbers in, every year, almost half million Indians are coming to US, about 300K in just IT, I believe we need to learn from Indians and adopt some of the their models to make us somewhat competitive. The country can’t be strong by making more Bahria Towns or DHAs, we need to replicate this in education as well.
It is always a pleasure to listen to Dr. Saab. I am an engineer residing in Germany, the idea that pakistanis isolate themselves from the society is true. Even this mentality exists among educated ones too, they have a sense of blind religious and cultural superiority towards the locals.
Dr. Hoodbhoy , I have Always noted with surprise that , in All your talks , hall is half-empty !
I swear , if you were giving a similar talk in India , hall of 500 would be overflowing with people listening to you from the corridors and lobby !!!

Not sure if Pervaiz sahab reads comments here. I’m an overseas Pakistani, settled in Australia. I was thinking to get in touch. Wanted to do a session with him on data-driven economic reform ideas, based on some lessons from Australian public service systems. I’ve worked within the Pakistan govt before (in an independent Ministry of Finance entity), and then also in the Victorian public sector in Melbourne.

Thanks Dr Sahib for raising an important issue getting more and more critical with each passing day. Fundamentally incentive for change is driven by two major factors, dissatisfaction with the present and expectation for better future prospects. Usually migration is driven by economic considerations. In the case of current Pakistan, the first factor is the predominant phenomenon and youngsters are desperate to keep their hopes alive by moving out by hook or crook. And who can blame them?

Imparting quality education to the masses is not priority of our policy makers that is why we as a nation are suffering.
Partition also resulted in a lot of migration within the subcontinent. Economic opportunities will help stem migration.

Sahib... In abroad any expat labour class earning aprx more thn 1.5lacs per mnth and skilled n manegerial level staff community earings about 4... 6lacs per month so is it possible in our beloved Pakistaaaan

Refer to my below comment - I further say Pakistani - Americans in US having fortune of +USD 10-million why dont they open or somebody must propose them to open *FREE* IT Universities in Pakistan which shall be based on courses similar to MIT - Standford, Harvard and Others - those all Universities must be affiliated from US Colleges and after 5~10 years we will have thousands of IT mens ready to compete in the market.

I want to add that poor, communal , corrupt, governance lead to abject poverty. There should be only one man made constitution with secular values & rule of law to govern the society & to get benefit by public. Two constitutions togather cannot serve the society. There should be supermacy of man made constitution interpreted by SC explained in legislature over God made constitution & interpreted by religious leaders like moulvis, Pandits & other religious teachers.
Equal rights to all human beings irrespective of race, gender, religion are a must in a man made constitution , the Supreme law of tbe land. Thanks.

Working with many pakistani colleagues in middle east since long, I want to add one more thing:
Majority of the Pakistani white collar worker doesn't want to go back to Pakistan due to security and law situation. They work in middle east and always on the look for migration to Canada or Australia. Due to this issue, they behave insecure in work place and doesn't perform to the potential. They are scared thst if they lose job, they will go back to Pakistan.
This is not the case for majority of Indians, Filipino, Egyptians or Bangladesh.
Security /law and rights are the major reason in my opinion.
If Pakistan does not have good teachers Sir Prevez why don't you initiate and tie up with Indian teachers who are passionate to teach free of charges on virtual media. Please help these innocent children thru some NGO tieup of India who do his free of cost so that it's not a burden to Pakistan

I have gone through the whole discourse. This whole exercise appears to spread discontentment among Pakistani youth by projecting rosy picture of life in the west. It has not been told what money, the expatriate Pakistanis doled out to them on their visiting and arranging address to gatherings in USA, UK and Norway etc..The pseudo intellectuals, journalists, artists, singers from Pakistan having already made fortunes here manages such visits abroad through their network who finance their visits, addresses at different cities to native Pakistanis and mint money, which appears to be the main objective. These countries had they been so rosy, honest and transparent would not have allowed the huge wealth earned through corruptions and transferred through money laundering from developing countries to be placed on their soils or landed in banks. Not only that but persons with serious charges in their native countries are readily allowed to take refuge. reside and bask while on the contrary instead of asking them to leave their shores and face justice in their native lands. On the contrary, a person living ten thousand miles away from their shores and levelled of charges against their interests, even that far off place such elements are not spared as they act to extricate them and brought them to their shores to inflict punishment. Even the law and order situation is not so fine as considered and all sorts of crimes and corporate frauds/corruptions are rampant on even institutional levels. Pakistan is a beautiful country and provide best living environment and would suggest don't spread discontentment by disinformation and misleading by projecting false and rosy picture.

you talk about APNA - and said each doctor has an asset of minimum of USD 10-Million each x 5000-Doctors = USD 50,000 Billions (if my calcs are not wrong), why dont you encourage them to open *FREE* Medical Colleges + Charity Powered Hospitals in 50-Cities/Towns of Pakistan and get those medical colleges affiliated with US University, the courses should be from US. so after 10-years we would have huge team of highly educated doctors. See I am not keeping eye on their fortune, but the cost of each Medical College & Hospital would not go beyond USD 20-million (600-Crores). in this scenario I am asking you to speak to APNA to get them agree investment (1st phase) for 20-colleges which will be max 400-Million USD..... after all one day they will die and what will they do by keeping this much of fortune with them... they must do something good to take out Pakistan from the worst situation.
As long as Pakistan exists, hateful and wrong idea of two naton theory will continue. Dismantling of Pakistan into smaller provinces would be better for the people of Pakistan and India.

The leaders in both India and Pakistan are equally pathetic.
The biggest difference is in the polity.
Pakistani society is a militarized society which celebrates wars and conflicts ironically not having won a single war in its short history.
Whereas Indian society particularly the middle class focus on education and upward mobility.
To certain extent same is visible in Bangladesh where they are busy on improving their living condition instead of some nonsensical never ending wars.
This is the reason why both India and Bangladesh which split from Pakistan half a century ago have moved far ahead of Pakistan.

@1:12:16 - I dont agree with the gentleman's comment about kids being raised as projects in Pakistan. If we are comparing with Indian parents (let me add Chinese parents as well) - Pakistani parents are way laid back in terms of raising their kids as a project. Being a parent yes I do feel really proud when my kids out perform and I learnt this from my fellow Indian and Chinese parents. If you go to Harvard and all those top universities in US Ivy Leagues+ schools - you will see that mostly all parents - White, Black, Asians etc etc do feel proud and do rightfully have chip on their shoulders that their kids have acheived so much.... I have seen some of those kinds of parents working really hard days and nights to make their kids go to those unis. What is so wrong about treating a kid as a project and try to make that project the best ????
The problem is not about thinking that your kids are your projects, the problem is when you force societal pressures and definitions and expectations on your kids.
I proudly say that my kids are my projects and I want to feel proud and have the right to brag and feel that I got an A+ when I see my son becoming a Validectorian of the top pre med program in a Canadian University and attending a top 10 med US school. Whats worng in that?
On one hand you are saying that we should encourage our kids to thirst for knowledge, and to do something larger than life, on the other hand you dont want parents to treat the kids as projects and take pride in it???? I am sorry but the world works on the principle of rewards and postive re-enforcement and a parent is also a human being ... please kindly give them that much right......
