  • Tony Kirrage is a world renowned Champion Sea Match angler, he is also a magazine collumnist, a Tackle shop Proprietor, Tackle designer, and now an Author. ( he also squeezes in a bit of Taxi driving as a hobby)
    I feel very fortunate that I was able to persuade Tony to allow me to accompany him when he fished the Eastbourne Nomads Open Beach match competition recently and film him.
    This is the edited video of this.
    The hardest part was to edit this down to a reasonable length video, as the 4 hours of the match were filled with learning points and action, and I actually entered the edit suite with nearly 4 hours of video, .
    So I havent shown all of the fish he caught
    but
    Hopefully I have managed to include the most important lessons .
    Tony scored over 300 points which could on another day have been a winning score , but on this day the winner scored over a thousand. To be fair to Tony he had me distracting him (although I tried not to) and he really was not on a good peg.
    I learned a lot, The biggest lesson being that Im not sure if I want to be entering any sea match competitions in the near future , as I like to fish for relaxation, and sea match fishing seems to be a bit stressful

    Great video. I remember, as a kid, watching Tony and Trevor Rooney on the Sea Match Fishing videos and reading about them in Sea Angler, thinking that I hoped I'd be that good at fishing as guys like that. Great anglers and definitely a part of my fishing memories.

      @@SEAFISHINGwithCJ I fished a match last month and I was broken halfway through. Judging how long to let the baits sit before the crabs stripped the hook. I was casting every 10 minutes just to keep the hooks with something on. Unhooking fish and keeping them safe in bucket of water while I clipped a new rig on, casting out. Walking to the next angler to measure and get the score card signed by them. It was absolutely relentless and was glad when it was over, hardest 5 hours of fishing ever to finish close to the bottom. Would think relaxing fishing wouldn’t make you so tired and stiff the following day 😁

    Why use gutted worms ? I assumed the guts would add scent (I'm a beginner)

    • @SEAFISHINGwithCJ
      @SEAFISHINGwithCJ  2 года назад +1

      Non gutted worms ( known as freshouts) are very difficult to keep. . 10 worms would need to be kept in a tray of fresh seawater which would need regular changing Wheras 10 gutted worms can be wrapped in newspaper , where they stay alive for up to a week. But You are correct freshouts are best

      Im no match angling expert, but Tony is, and in a conversation on the beach that day, (not in the video) he says that that isnt true. However if that works for you, great. Im sure some days it works, just like on some days the fish will only take stinky bait, and some days it has to be fresh, its why i said in the video, have a selection of bait, so you can keep experimenting until you start catching. During that match Tony had some really fresh worms, but the best fish came to 3 day old worms. A lot is about having confidence in your bait.but be prepared to experiment.

    had dealings with tony in the past, very good bloke, but going sea fishing in carpet slippers, not sure thats a good tip, and his casting is sooo bad now, ive used 30lb amnesia for years, im sure was 30lb as it was the only one on sale and saying his hooks are 2 kamasan when they look bigger than a 1/0, sea state is moderate and not rough, and i multi task, i talk to people while still fishing, and years ago in matches we all had buckets and we were going by weight, at the weigh in there was always one or two guys wanting to take any fish the anglers didnt want
