I started guitarlessons in may 2019, so 2 years, and i am 73 now. It's a great joy
and many evenings i play at least 2 hours. I find barre chords verh difficult, though i practice a lot. I think that practice makers perfect. Hope to get enough time to learn to play this beautifull instrument. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge. Nico

I gotta say, I've been workin hard on this chord since discovering this video for myself a few weeks ago. The technique taught here has changed how I play other chords by adjusting how I hold the neck and position my wrist. It hasn't just helped with a chord I was never able to play correctly. To finally be able to play a Bm barre chord that sounds right has boosted my confidence and made practice more fruitful and enjoyable. I sincerely mean this: Thank you for posting this video. I finally get to play so many songs I stayed away from for a long time and I'm really super grateful.

That tip of concentrating on landing the different fingers in brilliant. To show my appreciation, I'll offer a couple more tips:
    1) Practice taking off from different chords. I thought I had the Bm down pat until I tried "Proud Mary" in which the Bm comes after the A chord.
    2) In the Bm chord played as discussed in this video, there is no need to get clean tones with the index finger on strings 2, 3, and 4. Those strings are being fretting up higher with the other fingers. With that in mind, concentrate on getting B on the 5th string clean. From there if you simply roll the index finger a bit to the left, as described, It is almost automatic to get a clean tone on the 1st string, even if the index finger is arched and doesn't even touch strings 2, 3, and 4. Same if the index finger muffles strings 2, 3, and 4.

Sometimes restringing your guitar with a lighter gauge of strings can really help the newer player. I play my acoustic a lot, and because I do infills and sing while playing, I appreciate a guitar that is a little more capable than a thickly strung guitar. Tone isn't that much different (especially when plugged in) and when I drop tune it a half a step it's even easier. :) All I need to do is throw a capo on the first fret to get to standard tuning. Been playing since the later 60s and always learning, thanks to good people like you. :)

Thanks for the video and tips. I'm 72 and it has taken me 7 months to get to 65/70 bpm on changing up between the G,D and Bm chord using a metronome. I land the bar first but will start landing the other fingers during my practice. Actually over the last 7 months I have been on a mission to be able to play bar chords. I've made about equal progress on all of them. I should have done this when I was younger...

Just to add to the pedagogy of the B minor thing. Lots of pros grab a Bm chord like this, low to high: X2443X, where you are NOT playing a barre at all, so this way sounds great and it's super-fast to grab, once you've practiced it a bit. The high E note that you're leaving out is F#, which is optional for almost all chord strumming /rhythm playing -- because your 4th string note is F#, and you don't need two in order to get the full triad.

Going to get practicing the idea of assembling the chord in different ways right away.
I have always started with the ring finger, mainly because of Lyin Eyes, going from the Em to the Bm, I can leave the finger anchored in place and just slide it down And then I use the same method, starting with the ring finger, with Tequila Sunrise and some others and ya, I’ve practiced a bunch but it’s yet to get as smooth as my other chord changes and if I take a day off it’s like starting over for that and the dreaded F chord so I hope this method will work for both.
Time to get to work and I’ll let you know how it goes.
    Thanks again Shane.

Still a struggle, I can play it clean but can never get there as smoothly as I can when going for most open chords, it’s like as I go to make the change one or more fingers freeze.
I think it all in my head now, sort of like Charles Barkley’s golf swing( RUclips if your not sure what I mean).
Maybe not that bad and yes I’m usually only missing the first beat these days, just really looking forward to the day it’s as smooth as my other changes.
Oh well, back to work, later😵‍💫

Very helpful, thanks Shane! I hate Bm! I just discovered your channel. Wish I would have found it earlier, but I'm going to work on your suggestions. One question for you, I currently do not play with a pick. I mostly strum (acoustic only) with a few finger picking songs. Should I start practicing with a pick? I've been playing now for about a year. Thanks!

Hi Peggy - thanks for commenting - glad to have you here with us. I believe that some pick technique is essential for strumming songs. Although you can strum with your fingers you get a nice bright sound with the pick that is well worth exploring. Cheers!

so which strings is the barring finger supposed to be touching? because for me, my first finger cuts out the sound completely on the high E string

Is it OK to play the chord with your ring finger and pinky swapping positions? For some reason I can get the chord like that but struggling badly the "proper" way.

Scoot Am one fret down either barred or not(easier).
