- Thank you to our alpha patron Joel for this.... different flavor of the Doors pick. It's like a blend of LA Woman and When the Music's Over almost... I read up on the background and apparently there was a lot of strife in and out of the band and it kinda shows. But, its The Doors so even a sort of off day is some of the most iconic music ever made. I felt like Jim was a little erratic but it added to the music I feel.
If you are watching day of premiere this the 2nd anniversary of the channel! I can't believe how far we've come! Except for today, sorry, the audio was a little off. I had my mic plugged in but I guess the camera didn't register it. It happens like twice a month lol my apologies.

Never thought a reactor would feature “The Soft Parade”. It’s my personal favorite Doors LP.
I read a remark that Ray Manzarek had made about this album, that it was somewhat inspired by The Beatles' Sargent Pepper album, with all of its forays into wider instrumentation and more progressive production.
I was thinking this sounded Zappa-esque

@@L33Reacts THe band was a great anchor for Jim's poetic impulse but Jim was more than the FACE of the band...he was the very engine and visionary for the band. After he died, the band tried to go on but without Jim at the center there w as nothing left.
I'd also add Jim was THE center of a great band like John Fogerty was for CCR...they were the essential part.
Jim was definitely more than just the face of the band. While yes, Jim is the most popular one out of all of them, it doesn't diminish his poetic artistry, vision, theatrical performances, one of a kind voice, and more.
All 4 members are The Doors. They each brought heart, mind, & soul to that group. Without one member, there wouldn't be The Doors.

"The Soft parade" and "Not to touch the earth" are my very favorite doors songs. Many seem to not even be aware of them, some doors fans seem to only know the hits, which I find weird. At the end of the song "The Soft Parade", Jim says "When all else fails we can whip the horses eyes and make them sleep and cry", is from a long ago mystical type poetic tale about a ship lost at sea in a huge storm and they had all these horses in the ship and had to let them drown in the sea and they were trying to figure out how they could reduce the horses suffering as they drown, that is what it is about. Remember a lot of Jim's poems and lyrics were about mythology, mythological ancient stories and mysticism and I have always felt and thought that though Jim died so young, he most definitely was "an old ancient soul". After meeting Jim (one of my girlfriends knew him, when the doors first started out and lived in Venice beach) I KNEW he was "an old soul".. In my conversations with Jim, we talked about poets, mythology, Art and mysticism. This song is like 4 different songs rolled into one song...that's the way I've always thought about it..

My favorite is "When the Music's Over", but this one's way up there as one the Door's best experimental music efforts.

Congratulations. This song is unique in The Doors catalogue. When it was released and everyone was listening to it as part of an album side, they had more chances to become familiar with it. The instrumentals are so creative and well done that it soon becomes a deep cut gem.
Wow, decades since I heard this! Young people taking over the world, but not by loud protest and violence. Just living peaceful till the old people are gone. A soft parade of hippies which stands for help in producing peaceful individual existence! 😊

When this album came out some (not all) Doors fans were disappointed. For me, this album is and always has been a masterpiece - thanks for sharing @L33Reacts! Of course the live album "Absolutely Live" remains unforgettable and one of the best live albums ever. Best wishes @all from Hamburg (Germany)
I’m a Texan who first heard this in Hamburg in 1985, staying with my German family. It always reminds me of Hamburg. Ammersbek specifically, U2 stop Hoisbüttel. Tschüß!

The PBS live version of this very complicated song is amazing, Jim was on fire in that performance.
Happy 2nd Anniversary 🎉 I just recently started watching your channel and you have me fired up for the Doors again! Turns out it’s the perfect soundtrack for driving around and gardening. Strange days have found us indeed!
I got that one on the earlies 70s, the whole album is amazing.
@L33Reacts they usually credited all their songs to the Doors so each member got an equal share. This is the only album with separate writing credits because Morrison felt he didn't do his part.
I haven’t heard this in many years but all the lyrics came right back! I was a late Doors fan (he was already gone) in 1983 I was about 14. Completely obsessed at the time with everything Jim and the Doors! My older brother got me into them - thankfully no drugs! 😅
Gee Lee, I meant to comment on your last Doors reaction to go here next, but got interrupted and forgot. I was 12 when my 16 year old brother brought The Doors home in ‘69. One of the great debut albums ever! Now you will hear the pschidelic/prog side of the band. My goodness the transitions! Exited for you and looking.forward to it. Enjoy!

Later, when rock generally was not as great as in the golden year we realized their greatness.
I was born in '65. This album was actually me and my friends' introduction to the Doors in the 1980s, aside from hearing "Hello, I love you" in Neighbors (1981) and "Light My Fire" on the radio. My Dad raised us up with lots of diverse stuff (mostly classical, but also blues, folk, jazz, Gamelon, broadway musicals, the Beatles, Louis Armstrong, Roger Miller, the ultra-square "Sing Along with Mitch!" albums), so our trajectory was weird. Later, my older siblings were listening to Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Judy Collins, Simon & Garfunkle, Gordon Lightfoot, Cat Stevens, etc. The "harder" stuff came later in my life than for many, my go to preference being punk. Consequently, theres very little now that I can say that I actively dislike (jingoistic "patriotic" and advertising music), which I'm glad for.

Bought this record the day it came out.....To this day I can sing along with every single word! Hard to believe since I was always wrecked listening to it.

Try "Wishful Sinful". It's the song right before this one on the album.
Of the 5 albums, this is the only one that gave writing credit to the individuals. All other times the writing credits were given to "The Doors".
This song has so many great lines to it. "Cobra on my left, leopard on my right" never gets old. Jim performed the opening lines about petitioning the lord with prayer at the beginning of Break on Through (to the Other Side).
This is the trip, the best part.

L33, Happy Anniversary🎉🎉Thanks for doing this Doors song, I tried to get other reactors to try it. This sounds nothing like anything else in the Doors catalog. It's soft Jazz mixed with a Progressive style and the lyrics are stream of consciousness so they don't make much sense. Check out "Touch Me" , written by Robby Krieger, from the same album. Doors with strings and horns (one of the greatest sax solos from Curtis Amy), then there's "stronger than dirt" but that's another story for you to look into. The live video performance from The Smothers Brothers Show is great. You would probably enjoy reading the 1980 book "No One Here Gets Out Alive" (you might be able to find it somewhere in paperback) by Danny Sugerman, who was with the Doors from age 12 and became their manager at 17 and Jerry Hopkins, a former writer with Rolling Stone magazine who wrote the first biography of Elvis, it's basically a history of Jim Morrison and the Doors. The Oliver Stone movie The Doors(1991) is pretty good to get a feel for that time period but it's not that historically accurate. M☘

The lost art of Rock medleys- melding several unrelated songs into one long track. Some others from that era include the Beatles Carry That Weight, America's Hat Trick and 10cc's Feel The Beneift.

That bad mic sound seems to fit with this album. Takes me back to transistor radio days in the 60/70’s. Try “Wild Child”, “Wishful Sinful” and Runnin’ Blue”. You get The Doors, remarkable! Congrats on 2 years!
The Guess Who song FRIENDS OF MINE is a direct inspiration from The Doors. Burton Cummings was and is still a huge Doors fan!😉🇨🇦👍

"Calling on the dogs, calling on the dogs, calling on the GODS" - really you're getting to the best part of the journey. All these long Doors epics are so awesome. But you can only go down to the very holy grail, the only recently released "Rock Is Dead". Long as it gets, but boy so interesting.

Mr Ballen is a former navy seal who has a great RUclips channel. About paranormal and mysterious stories. Has big following. Very good. He wears plaid shirts and has his hat on backwards so if you’re getting compared to a navy seal it’s a good thing it’s not a bad thing.

If you are praying for something different than what's happening to your life, you're praying against God's plan because he planned every moment out to the very second (this is according to believers) so in a way in makes sense. This album was widely considered a disappointment. Nobody I knew bought it and I never went out of my way to hear it. My loss, obviously!

I don't think this mix is the one that came out in the 60's, as you say it sounds confusing. The original was much more coherent with the various vocal tracks in balance, this is one of my favourite Doors songs but not this version.
I remember listening to this song as a teenager in 1970/71, I liked it at first, but later I found it kind of embarrassing. Overall, I think it’s an unsuccessful experiment, although it has its moments. The lyrics are truly weird. “The monk bought lunch!” The rest of the album is not the best nor the worst of the Doors, average stuff by their standards, worth listening to. I like “Wishful sinful”, a gentler kind of song.
Yeah this isn’t even a top 5 Doors album. But this is the coolest song on here. I was stoned one day decades ago listening to this song and realized the best thing he did for his career was die before becoming a parody of himself.
Though it kind of disturbs me, I think I know what you mean and agree?
