"When the Music's Over" is a masterpiece, underrated in rock history.
Thanks for playing this! You have captured the spirit of the early Doors exactly! Strange, dark, cryptic, carnival, f’s with your head - you got it. The Doors were once said to be “A midnight carnival in the graveyard” Wait till you do The End. Its fitting that those are the last two words of When The Musics Over. Warning / be prepared!
Especially long version of the end. Definitely out there
I'm glad you enjoyed! This was certainly an experience. I loved it. I can't wait to hear the end now.
beware@@L33Reacts
@L33Reacts be prepared. It was used in Apocalypse now movie
His free speaking is what Beatniks used to do in clubs in the 1950s when they got up and recited poetry. Jim is the Lizard King.
You really nailed it, it's like free form or jamming with vocals. Freedom like this is completely lost on younger people, not sure you'll ever hear anything like this ever again.
@user-mo6tz6oh9i hipster to hippie!
reading Kerouac’s On the Road right now. spot on
"When the Music's Over, life is over too" !
The End, Roadhouse Blues, Texas Radio And The Big Beat, Light My Fire, Break On Through, The Soft Parade, Riders On The Storm, Soul Kitchen, Peace Frog... the list is endless. Dive in and enjoy.
Never heard of that third one haha
@@gandhialwaysleavesanonion679 well you have to check it out then!😉
Live is the real doors btw
Psychedelia at its best!!!! If a band ever embodied a hit of LSD, it would be The Doors.
This is one of my all time favorite Doors songs. You ought to check out the Live at the Hollywood Bowl version, where he yells at the crowd, tells them to shut up. It's great!
It is a great song. I always imagine Jim as an ancient greek actor. He was a well-read guy I think he got some of his ideas from that knowledge of philosophy and fiction. Anyway there will never be another like him.
The Doors (Of Perception) will always have a deeply special place in my heart for all of eternity ❤
I think he entered a door by the end of song albeit a church bathroom.
Yeah that's so weird that my school/church bathroom kept flashing in My head like a damn projector. It was strange. Loved it though lol
@L33Reacts it’s crazy because Jim is in the “27 Club”. If you haven’t heard of that term, I would def look into it. It’s wild. Jim was always walking that fine line between brilliance & madness. I HIGHLY recommend checking out The Doors movie made in the 90s. Val Kilmer & Meg Ryan absolutely killed it recreating the life of Jim & his wife, Pam. The Doors sound is exclusively psychedelic experimental & Jim’s soul is quite literally made of pure poetic gusto. Cryptic was the name of his game, for sure! When he wasn’t drinking whiskey, dropping acid & engaging in s€xual exploration, he was writing & creating & howling at the moon ❤
The Door was in its own lane. Their music was different; Jim Morrison's vocals were unique. And you can still listen to it today.
Man, I always loved the drumming of John Densmore. His style reminds me of military style and jazz mixed together.
Oooohhhh! That's an interesting take. I love it. I have to think about that for a little while.
He was in High School marching band and then trained in jazz, so there you go.
Absolute MASTERPIECE my friends!!! Very sophisticated and artistic writing and arranging..the instruments are played so incredibly!!
Jim's voice is perfectly modulated throughout for maximum emotional effect.
Thanks for playing this and introducing younger people to true musical genius.
Thank you Jim Morrison and RIP forever!!!!
In the 60s my first concert was the Doors. We took LSD. The experience changed me forever. 😄✌💛, PJ
This is your DE-PROGRAMMING, brother!
Absolutely love The Doors! They made 6 phenomenal albums in just 4 short years with Jim, 67 to 71. You're right about the keyboard giving them their unique sound. I don't think any other band sounds like them.
you should try and sneak in "The End", no one's gonna complain!!! 👌👌✌✌😁😁
a feast of friends, alive she cried
I'm a 71 year old woman and the Doors are still my favorite band. No, you were not programmed but like the Chamber Brothers sang "my souls been psychedeliczed".
Time for Lee to do "Time"?
Three master musicians and a lyrical poet- Welcome to The Doors!
My 14-year-old mind was pretty much blown back in 68 when my best friend and I listened to this album. "I want to hear, the scream of the butterfly," that line always gets me.
IIRC the butterfly was a tattoo on the back of a pornstar (sscreaming).
That he took from the marquee of a porno theater of all places😊
Yep...
The Doors had a lot of "trip music". They were very unique.
When this came out, I was living in LA 13 years old and this song defined life at the time. Never stopped loving The Doors. Lee gets this, just so great to see music transcend time.
Jim was a poet and this is poetry to music
Best reaction of this song by far. The way your eyes light up and the shock... it's like I'm hearing it again for the first time. It's amazing how music connects you to other people and to yourself again.
The Doors a very Unique Band from the 60's into the very early 70's then the MUSIC was OVER
one thing I dont think the doors get enough credit for is just how powerfully original and dangerous they were when this song first starting hitting the scene. this is actually not a '67 song. it was already in the full form you are hearing now by '66!... the doors performed this live at the whisky in LA and the influential club in nyc, odines in yes, 1966.... sure dylan had broken thru the lyrics barrier esp by '65. & yes rubber soul and psychedlia sounds were already out... but no one in '66, incl the velvet undergrd or early floyd, was combining powerful lyrics, heavy psychedlic sound w/ improv jazz (densmores drums in this is top shelf) delivered with dramatic stage techniques of tension, danger & pause. along w/ the mood & cinematic broad scape. music as carthasis & experience, to take you on a passage way.... from '66-'68, the doors had a major impact in pushing the ledger of what rock could do. very unique unit, to never be repeated. ground breaking to later genres such as dark metal, sound scape electronic, punk & college radio.
There is just nothing else like this. Utterly fantastic. Love your reactions 🤌🏼
It really is! Sadly this is a phase of the channel where my face is like RIGHT in the camera for some damn reason and I can’t stand it. But, I’ve done a ton of the doors. We are working through this album as we speak. Part 3 is coming out tomorrow
And thank you, I really appreciate that 🙏🙏
@@L33Reacts Hey bud, not my place to tell you how to feel, BUT, please don’t worry about unimportant shit like that, life is too short. I’ve wasted half my life worrying about crap like that and not made my self any happier for it. Just keep up the good work and enjoy it all, that’s what shines through 👏🏼
It's not unusual to go on a mental journey during an extended Doors song. Perhaps unearthing early memories of a church bathroom. Jim Morrison once explored his earliest memorys in song, (seeing a roadside accident). Jim read a lot about human psychology and philosophy, and fearlessly explored the use of psychedelic drugs, meditation, ritual, emotional manipulation. His goal was to create music that transformed himself, and his audience. Jim liked "The Motivation of Crowds", taking audiences on strange musical trips.
Sad day "When the music's Over". This is their best song.
Jim was a poetwriter in the first place. He knew that if he wants to be heard by the people he had to find a way to get a bigger audience and the rest is history...
Love this it's on my funeral playlist.
Decades ago because I am old, my buddy and I in a 10 year period would meet up at two older downtown bars about three times per month. In Warren’s Inn, the Compact Disc, “Strange Days” was on the jukebox. I would try to time the song, “When The Music Is Over” for the last song of night at “Drink Up”, 2:15 am. Often I would nail it.
I adore the Doors. They were one of the handful of bands that showed me it was ok to be different. So much great music in such a short time! Superlative, superlative, superlative, hyperbolic adjective, gushing praise!!!
The band the Doors - was Jim Morrison’s contribution to the band . The name the Doors was based on a book by Aldous Huxley .
their piece titled 'The End' it was the basic sound track for the movie Apocalypse Now . The opening scenes with this music was very moving especially for veterans some of whom left as it became too much for them
The Doors very often have this dynamic, dramatic presentational quality.
Pretty classic reaction there son. Now you know why we love The Doors.
The Doors ABSOLUTELY LIVE.
They were masters of dynamics
Your reaction was priceless. Your intelligence build your opinions and it is so nice to checking this vidéo. At 70 years old, Doors Have been my best bet in music i
Thank you for that. I truly appreciate it.
@@L33Reacts i would like to you to react to 3 artists that never been really much presented into a reaction on you tube but I would like to propose as some of most distinctively by their creativity in music.
JJ Cale, the hero’s of Eric Clapton and mine too. Cale wrote more then 200 songs, you can choose Artificial Paradise, Sensitive Kind, Deep Dark Dungeon. The second Artist Shawn Phillips, and with him, check his album Second Contribution. And the 3er one, Bruce Cockburn with his songs, If I have the rocket launcher, Loner, Silver Wheel, Maybe the Poet, Indian War.
Marvelous musicians!
Good luck to you, et merci beaucoup.
Daniel St Emile. De Suffolk 🎸🥁👍
Try The End from their first album next, like nothing else. I think of the Doors as a band who always listen to what each other are playing, almost the polar opposite of Cream.
Probably the best psychedelic rock song and album ever. done.
I was a Teen in the mid 60’s. Love The Doors, Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, 10years after. But don’t forget Creedence Clearwater Revivival! And AC/DC
You are sponge that absorbs every detail of past legendary music.
Soft Parade or Weird Scenes Inside the Gold Mine....Keep listening. Jim will jump into your soul and never leave.
Lol I had to laugh at your comment about a part of your brain being unlocked. Imagine hearing this as a 12-13 year old as I did when it was released. There were other innovative bands coming out in 1967 but NOBODY went as far as the Doors! I was hooked immediately and remain so almost 60 years later. There is a reason you don't hear any other artists over the years doing Doors covers. It's because they CAN'T live up to the original. This was 4 guys all on the same wavelength, many times just recording stream of consciousness rambling by Jim Morrison with the other 3 jamming and feeling the breaks and swells. Sure they had radio hits, but they were all over the map with their music and NEVER lacked creative inspiration. A truly unique group of artists thinking as one!
MORRISON HOTEL is probably my favorite Doors album.
Haven't heard this one in a bit, love it, thanks!
It’s like a psychedelic Freeform, jazz, poetry open mike.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE how at 3:59, the song could have just ended there and been a standard radio-play song. But no! That's where it really gets interesting. For those who may not know, the band laid down their tracks in a single day. Morrison was off doing something else. He came in the next day and put down the vocals in one single take over the band. Two days! For a song this long and complicated. That blows my mind. John Densmore is a very, very underrated drummer in my opinion. He served this song absolutely perfectly in all ways.
It’s like beatniks used to read poetry in clubs in Greenwich Village N.Y. In the fifties. They would recite it onstage with some music accompanying them in the background.
Bro on 57 years old when I was a kid Jim Morrison's on TV singing Light My Fire and he scared the crap out of me just the way he looked at the camera I'm not kidding he look like Charles Manson he haunts! When I got older I end up falling in love with the doors hardcore have a great day good reaction!
That is one great f**king song man. It's probably my favourite Doors album and it's really, really dark. All the way through. The Doors brought their own unique sound to the party and they have a timeless quality to their sound. There's sp much great music from these guys. Dive in man, you'll love it.
I really enjoyed seeing you discover the Doors, I Hope that you will continue to see how far the Doors rabbit hole goes, I believe you will enjoy the journey as many of us have and continue too.
There are a lot of artists I love, but The Doors are at the top of the list. Absolutely unique.
You are absolutely right. I haven't heard anything like them. They are definitely in a world of their own.
The Doors are just magic!
I was fortunate to see the Doors perform this live at the Cheetah in Santa Monica, April 1967. I still remember standing in that ballroom being mesmerized by the band. I grew up in LA, and once we found the Doors, we were hooked and saw them at every venue we could. I think they were at their best in '66 and '67.
The whole album is a dark carnival; the music fits the cover.
This is more of what the Doors are really like. Wait until you hear their song The End.
Doors at their best!
Trippy? Try my favorite "The Soft Parade"!
This is the best part of the trip ...
I'll add it to the list. I'm down with the trip lol
Robbie Kreiger is most underrated. They were my first concert, in 1970 at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago. I was 15 and found I loved live rock concerts. Awesome song & reaction. And you are getting programed, but by Me. Mojo Risin, & the boys, not the CIA.✌️❤️🎶
If you think this is weird. Play the long version of the song the end. The band that I know that doesn't have bass player.
So much space, to let the music breathe.
It's what music was!
The only song in rock and roll history where you get to hear a butterfly scream. I don’t think it packs quite as much punch as “The End,” but that may have less to do with its own merits than it not (as of yet) having been incorporated into a cinematic masterpiece. It’s still plenty epic, not to mention sweeter and more hopeful, and that’s more than good enough for me.
L33 says, "I think it unlocked of a piece of my brain that's been locked for a long time. What the hell is going on?" I can't imagine a single thing a person could say about a piece of music that would be a higher compliment. (And you said you weren't having a good day. That was a month ago. I truly hope it was nothing tragic and things are going better for you now.)
That intro never gets old - in fact, the doors are the only band that never gets old for me.
In the day. Lounging in a couch with friends. Lights low....trippin' and smokin'. Everybody mellow...eyes closed soaking in the music with this and many other tunes. The culture of the times.....
Thier most psychedelic song. I saw them live in Detroit. It was an incredible night indeed. Doors forever 💙
I saw the Doors perform this live in 1970 - they had a dangerous vibe to them. My mother was afraid they were "satanic" and I'd be influenced in some way. I return to this song over and over for the past 50 years. I think it is a classic.
This is one of my favorite Doors song. Record companies in that era were scoundrels, but if your band was able to sell records they would turn you loose in the studio and let you create at will. This song is an example of that. These guys had the chutzpah to go in and experiment and the talent to come up with something special.
"Save us, Jesus!" against that wall of chaotic sound is the existential crisis that exemplifies the Doors.
I had a similar reaction in 1972 listening to this is my dorm room. Tripping without drugs.
Ya those first three Doors albums are great LA Woman cool to 🟤
The End is performed similar to this song. Pay close attention to the lyrics it gets a little freaky
BOTH tracks are ultimate CLASSICS; with these two numbers being under instruction to my Kids to be played at my funeral ... 👍🤟💫💥🎵🎶🎶🎵
We want the world and we want it……..NOW. Classic
I was 15 in 1967 when I first bought the first album the Doors put out and subsequently bought the next two albums and became a huge fan. This is my favorite song of the album but all the songs are good. Also, the third album is a banger; I look forward for you to react to them
Jim was a poet, John Densmore was jazz Drummer, Robby was just learning the guitar, and Ray on the keyboards was classical trained...the music this band put out in the brief, and hectic times of that decade..finishing with LA Woman Album, Is pure Art. Jim and the Doors died way to F#@ng early! Enjoy your Journey my friend. I will.❤💯👍✌️
That bass line...
You really ought to give a listen to the album "An American Prayer," which the remainder of The Doors put together after Jim's passing. They put to music a bunch of Jim's recorded poems... it is fantastic. You will not be disappointed.
Blasting this with the t tops outta my firebird.......those were the days
Superb Doors.
Music that could just breathe and go wherever. Watching a live version you can see how they just played off Jim.
Go to 7:21, then wait 3-4 seconds. Densmore hits the hi-hat and sustains it open and ringing for long than usual before closing. It's a longer sustained open hi-hat than you normally hear. And I swear, I wait in great anticipation the entire 7 minutes 21 seconds just to have the experience of that one hi-hat part.
The girl in the window won’t drop. That image was brought in by Jim relating to the first time he saw his girlfriend, Pam Courson. She was sitting in a tree outside his window while he was tripping his balls off. Or so the story goes. It was a scene in the movie with Val Kilmer.
I once did some of the last that you could get acid in the early 70s, and could of sworn I heard the scream of a butterfly 😳
Trip music. Peace ✌️
After you've heard The End there is a much shorter, weirder Doors song - Horse Latitudes. It refers to the northern and southern latitudes where there are often no winds and sailing ships would become becalmed. Allegedly, Spanish ships would throw their horses overboard when they were in danger of running out of water. Now imagine The Doors making a soundtrack for that. Yes, it is indeed creepy!
LOL, you’ll definitely love “The Iron Butterfly Theme” on Iron Butterfly’s first album. That one will completely mess with your brain.
Great! The End is my fave, but this is way up there. And, yes, as others have noted, live is another genuine experience.
For a completely different song by them, check out Touch Me. It's upbeat, has horns, and strings!
Crystal Ship and Love Street are my favorites.
Put together a flamenco guitarist, classical pianist, jazz drummer, a beat poet who is the evil twin of Frank Sinatra and you might begin to understand The Doors. The Doors were masters of texture.
My favorite doors song 😀
Should've listened to it in the late 60's after a hit of acid!
The first two albums by the Doors contain the essence of the band as it was originally made to sound. The last three albums are the band producing music after their ignominious fall in Miami.
The Doors and Strange Days were released within the same year of 1967. Waiting for the SUN came the next year after touring, money, success, and the press that built you up began tearing you down. Jim Morrison was literally the face of the group, and when that face was made criminal, the beginning of the end was on the horizon. And it came relatively fast. That's why the music sounds different on the backend of their career as you hear after The Soft Parade. The music on Morrison Hotel and L.A.Woman are closer to the roots they wanted to be known for in the first place. But as life, alcohol, drugs, and the lifestyle of the turbulent 196o's demanded punishment for success, the situation only exacerbated the demise of a gifted singer and young American poet after one fateful night in Miami. Exhausting his spirit and leaving his body in a Paris bathtub at 27.
The words and music of the Doors and Jim Morrison live on as rich sonic postcards from the past. A beautiful and rich testimony of their art and music. Enjoy
John densmore rules it on this song...so sporadic & jazz influenced....hes just, like, explosive at all the right times.
Greatest lyrics in Rock: Cancel my subscription to the resurrection - Send my credentials to the house of detention - I got some friends inside ✌️
Ray Manzarek's left hand man. It just don't quit.
The great thing about the Doors (and MANY other 60's bands) is that everyone in the band had their own unique style and didn't sound like anyone else. They were one of a kind. It's pretty amazing that they recorded their first album in August of 1966 - it got released in Jan 67 so people think of it as a 67 album. They were way ahead of their time.
I agree that they are totally unique... I've got no comparisons really. At points I can maybe hear some other influences but for the most part this seems like pure The Doors. Jim and company were destined by fate to write this strange, wonderful music
@@L33Reacts Check out the band Spirit. Another band that sounds like no one else and has really diverse sounds. Based on what I've seen you do here on your page you'd love them. Start with 'Fresh Garbage', 'Mr Skin', '1984' and 'Nature's Way'. All completely different styles and great songs. Randy California, the guitarist/singer/songwriter (Jay Ferguson also sang and wrote, later he was in Jo Jo Gunn and then went solo and had a hit with 'Thunder Island'), was in a band with Hendrix for a short time in NYC when he was 16, right before Hendrix left for England. SPirit was formd not long after that. Ed Cassidy, the drummer, was Randy's stepdad. Just listen to those four songs real quick, no need for reactions, just see what you think. My guess is you'll be wanting more. They were never big commercially, 'I Got A Line On You' was their only hit, but they have a big following in the music community. At least the older one. :)
