- Pine Harbor is a new game made in Unreal Engine 5.3. We played this full exclusive preview with RTX 4090 in a 4K monitor (no commentary). Enjoy this exclusive first look at this new survival horror game that will remind you of Silent Hill and Resident Evil. Please keep in mind that this game is currently in Early Access stage and we're not showing some naked zombies in this gameplay.
Pine Harbor was a small fishing town on the shores of the North Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by cliffs and dense pine forests, shrouded in thick fog. But everything changed as a result of a technological disaster. Explore the town, help its residents, and delve into the depths of the dark forests.

The game looks pretty good, but that snippet of melee combat in the convenience store looked dull. An idea (from someone who spent 4 years in the gaming industry): If melee and combat aren't the strongest aspect of a studio, focus on suspense instead. Instead of having enemies rush at you like every videogame monster out there, having the enemies linger in a dormant state until the player A) makes too much noise or B) gets too close. Then, have the attacks be brutal. Maybe one hit and your dead. Likewise, one strike with a baseball bat to the enemy will take them out (2 hits if the first was a glancing blow). Don't focus on what your studio isn't the best at. Compensate and emphasize other aspects. It's literally what Silent Hill 2 did. Weak combat because the studio wasn't good with combat, but they instead put their attention on the atmosphere and tension. It paid off. We still talk about Silent Hill more than 22 years after release.
100% agree, but the problem is that just by watching the videos of gameplay on youtube you can tell the devs took all the wrong lessons from other survival horror games.. silent hill = fog? check. resident evil = zombies rushing and gangbanging you? check. survival games = day and night cycle? also check.
The game has really bad lighting, it's really hard to see anything even during the day. Does a horror game need to be pitch black to be scary? At some point why even bother.. Just die, respawn during the day and continue playing until 2 mins later it's dark again, rinse and repeat.
@@takethisoops Yeah I think any of those features would be okay of they could incorporate one really original piece of gameplay. Like you can use the same fog as Silent Hill, but then you need some new combat. Or you can copy the enemies from Resident Evil, but you'd better have an original sense of atmosphere. Maybe instead of fog, there's a forest fire nearby and it's engulfed the town in a yellow haze with occasional ash and embers drifting by. It would cut down visibility similar to fog, but the look would be different and it could play into the narrative.

@@Ostireon For a first game it is impressive, they just maybe need someone to help them with the direction of games. What i said wasn't meant to attack them but to just point out some of the issues, i hope they continue to work on the game..

UE5 Game developer here.
Dialogs feeels not real. A almost can see a piece of paper in a voice actor's hand. You should add some pauses between words and sentences.
Also, I agree with others comments. If combat is not your strongest aspect, you should focus more on narrative, lore and atmospehre. Silent Hill series did it absolutely wonderfully.
Overall project looks pretty good and atmosphere is amazing. Good luck brothers game developers!
The game has decent environments, but the character work is mediocre, as is the plot and writing. Looks really rushed, in some ways. I'm sure the dev loves to hear that.
This is what happens to almost all games anymore, they get rushed and fail because they suck and the publishers blame the developers but this is just bad altogether
Funny how we come back full circle , Fogging back in the days because of processing power not being enough to render far away distances. Now every game wants to over maximize the effect for creepy beepy effect because they have the processing powe to do it.
At this point it’s about art style. And direction to what kind of horror you’re looking to do. Using the fog atmosphere from silent hill is now something you do for styles now. But not every game uses it. Fog in silent hill really made things creepy. Due to unknown if you’re running towards creepy creatures. It’s just how ahead of its time it truly was and made history because of their unique style.
Hope they work on it a little bit longer to buff out glitches and add immersion to the game its got very good potential

Alright. I'll give it some points, that bad voice Acting clip, speed up, super zombies and crash was all top tier. A+
kinda reminds me of a 1st person darkwoods
I don't know if they can fix the voice acting, cause in some parts sounds faster and have minimum pauses while talking, I don't know if they can fix that with a patch or next update, nice game for real
The bus sequence though.... Why aren't buses like this? 🗿
The silent hills are the pinnacle of horror games, guarantee if your sustem is 5,1 and you get yourself a fog machine youll be turning it off and finding something else too do.
i’m actually liking this game… even the old school video game style! ever since i cut off “rhymes with dory” i’ve been looking for gamers to watch & i’m enjoying this content!
The dialogue is horrible lol. The voice acting with the dad lol. Idk. Still A LOT of work left to do to make this a playable game I think but I hope they put the work in because it could be a really cool game.

Needs some drone / ambient "music" / generally spooky "music" and a lot of additional sfx / ambience. Also the tree leaves/bushes should be slightly animated & blowing around & should rustle. The brush under your feet sfx's needs work. Anyways, its a early access preview but always seems like too many devs just rip sfx off the internet rather than dedicate the time to soundfx and music since can really dramatically affect immersion if done right / wrong - shouldn't be an after thought since its just as important as everything else. Although I know a lot of the time sfx/music are added more towards the end of development but not sure who decided that's a good idea in game dev.

Interesting, it's been a while since I've seen a game start moving within a form of modern transport, perhaps the last time I saw something like that was in Half-Life 2

That house at 18:45 looked identical to the your dad’s house he was staying at.. some of the va’s like your dad and driver are good. But the main dude and the preachers daughter are…rough. Borderline bad. The story doesn’t seem as dull or uninteresting as others are saying though. Would be interested to see how this game progresses in time. Hopefully they do a good job.

Moving from first person view should always have camera bobbing otherwise it’s like your a still camera on a moving tripod it just feels not natural.

Like Silent Hill? Just because of the fog? It doesn't have the slightest thing in common with Silent Hill. No deep story as far as I can see, no creative monsters, no brilliant sound, no disturbing atmosphere etc. It seems boring and ridiculous.

while waiting for official VR port if there is any planned, you can try this game on VR using UEVR mod with low/medium setting to run it smoothly

So this game is not awesome as before . It looks alike PS2 game
the problem with these indie Horror games is that most of them have very poor story and pacing. You barely have any idea what is going on or why, and the progress is so fast, you barely understand what happened. Graphics are not so good for UE 5.3, they look like fallout 3 which is pretty old by now. Sound design is clunky at some point...list goes on.
Why is there a mail box at a bus stop in the beginning? Is it ok in America?

Well i was initially excited about the game but alas the enemies are just glorified zombies. Silent hill uses imagery and representation for all its enemy designs which makes them even more disturbing, this has that same problem that Calisto protocol has in which all the enemies are uninspired compared to what it was trying to emulate: Dead space.
this game has good graphics, the foggy setting looks good but everything else is sub par. 🤷

How is this game like "silent hill"... I've played silent hill... This game doesn't give the creepy horror psychological vibe... This more like resident evil at least abit. But the game do seem legit good as a survival horror.

Felt like the Unreal Engine is not utilized fully in this game. The story is pretty dull, the gameplay is super bland.
