    I first saw Endless Summer as a 9-year-old boy while on a family vacation at the Jersey Shore. The movie and this hypnotic, transcendental, and beautiful song became a lifetime part of my psyche. I remember my Hellish days at Army BCT and lulling myself to sleep by playing this song in my mind and imagining perfect waves. A few years later, I ended up in South Africa. I walked from Oyster Bay to Cape St. Francis. And, holy mother-bleeping bleep!- I retraced their steps from the sheep farms to the high, rolling sand dunes until, Cape St. Francis! Unfortunately, a strong easterly had blown the surf to a horrible and dangerous mess. Yet I went out anyway. Later I walked about ten miles along the shores of the St. Francis Bay and found the perfect wave at Jeffery's Bay. The perfect wave is elusive. Yet here you have found the perfect song.

      Hi Dick, that is very well said - I have the same feelings and memories you shared with the community, Peace be with you, Ciao, L
      PS: Remember Annette and Frankie?

    • @DickAllen4HOF
      @DickAllen4HOF 9 лет назад

      lancelot1953 As a native Philadelphian I will always be partial to Frankie Avalon. I, like many boys my age, had a crush on Annette. I was gravely disappointing in Disney for not doing more (They did next to nothing actually) to honor her on her passing. Walt Disney loved Annette like a daughter. No one short of Walt Disney himself did more for the company than Annette Funicello. Endless Summer is a docudrama and a totally different genre than the beach party movies. I agree with Bruce that the music of Frankie Avalon, Susan Ward (Linda Evans) and Donna Loren is not appropriate for what he wanted to achieve with Endless Summer. That does not mean that this old school surfer cannot also enjoy the fun and music of the Frankie and Annette's Beach Party movies. The timing of Beach Blanket Bingo is fascinating in of itself. The magic of it is temporal as it got wedged in those brief moments between the Fifties and radicalized Sixties

      Hi Dick, I agree with you, I grew up in the same era - dairy land Vermont/Southern Quebec, we did not do much surfing up here but we did have drive-ins, stock-cars, the early Mustangs, and restaurants we could get served at the window - we enjoy our American Graffiti at least six months a year!
      But other movies that brought back great memories were the Warren Miller ski movies. Bunch of us kids, would gather up at a poorly known (i.e. not busy) ski resort called Burke, VT and we would play his movies at night, then try to hurt ourselves imitating the pros the day after - I did succeed!
      This is the America I remember, dressing up to invite your Sweetheart up (including cleaning your car)! I was heart broken when Annette got married. She was a great spoke-person for our innocence and values of the days.
      When I came back from war, I did not recognize my country - I do not recognize it now either.
      Take care Dick, thanks for this great video, Peace be with you man, Ciao, L

      Hypnotic, transcendental . . . Perfect word choices, Dick.
      I first saw it when I was 10 or 11- some 5 years or so after it was released. It induced in me a dreariness and a yearning for the freedom and beauty of the beach and their lives.
      And that feeling's in the music and in no small way created by it.

    I'm 62 and saw this movie when I was a young kid. So magical. The music is unforgettable. Takes you to the beach at sunset, your body tired from surfing all day, your body radiatinf heat from soaking up the sun for 12 hours. The sand in your sandals. A cold beer in your hand. And watching the sun dip below the horizon. And time stood still.

    This tune, in connection to the film, transports me back to a time when we had time, Time to live, instead of time to just exist. A time of more patience, acceptance, respect, listening, ambling, simplicity. with lighter bodies, haha. A time where I think we were improving and would continue to do that. But, here we are.....It wasn't perfect back then, but now? Thank you for this tune which takes me to a quiet space, a place I feel thankful for having experienced and a place that reminds me to slow down and look up and around at the simple things.Things that wave to me and tell me it's all still here if I just jump off the edge and float...Gods music, for sure........Cheers and Aloha.

    I was a freshman at the University of Notre Dame in September of 1966. Breen-Phllips Hall. Room 247. It was a triple. Not much room for anything on the walls. I put my Endless Summer movie poster on the wall. When the snow piled high and the temperature dropped below zero, I saw that poster every time I left our room. I enjoyed being in South Bend, this California kid, and I didn't mind the cold. But this poster kept me warm inside.

    I saw the film before there was a sound track. I was 18 and moved to Hawaii summer 1965 to attend UH in fall for what was going to be 5 heavenly years. That summer,non-surfers took me to (Punahou High School ?) to see "a film about surfing." Bruce Brown was on stage narrating with music the future Endless Summer sound track. I bought a new, custom made 8'10" board by Hobie's from a NY kid at UH in fall. Mentored by the best (new friends), I eventually rode 18' waves with Doyle, Pomar, Sweet.

    The ALL-TIME signature surf instrumental tune for GENUINE surfers. Sounds just as gorgeous, played by the original guys, 4 decades later. And what a bonus in the clip - Bruce Brown talking with the guys about how it all began and how the Sandals' own composition influenced Bruce's filmed scenes in TES so powerfully. This whole clip is one unique experience. The ultimate de-stresser in these latter-day troubled times. Where's my old 9'5" ! - makes me wanna hit the beach and shoot the curl again.

    I remember looking at the liner notes to Endless Summer. It seemed the Sandals would go on their way and Endless Summer to the bargain racks and rummage sales. 46 years and counting it's remained a classic. Thanks guys!
