  • Bruce Brown's early films demonstrated his dry wit and a casual rapport with the best surfers of the late '50s and early '60s. Brown worked almost non-stop from 1958, when he made a low-key classic called "Slippery When Wet" to his sixth film, The Endless Summer, which showed the rest of the world what the sport was really all about.

When I met Bruce, his son, Wade was sanding for my label "The Surfing Underground" in the old Radon Boat Yard in Santa Barbara. One Sunday, we stopped by Bruce's house, which was back in a canyon south of Gaviota, on our way up to surf The Ranch. Bruce had just come back from surfing & diving abalone off our Channel Islands. He was wearing an old Rolling Stones T shirt and was welcoming & cordial. The great room was adorned with large blown up frames of great moments from his cinematography hanging high up on the walls the entire perimeter of the nice, but rustic setting. Bruce was a great guy, the real deal, part of the greatest generation of surfers ever. R.I.P.

I was 10 years old in Phoenix AZ in 1968. Some friends and I went to a theater and saw The Endless Summer. I remember thinking, "I want to do that!" 2 years later my family moved to San Diego, I bought a used 10' 2" Con and surfed every chance I got from then on!

Grew up in Hermosa Beach..mother worked at the Lighthouse..all these historical names bring back memories of young youth and fond memories..a different era and time. I reflect from time to time when I see "The Endless Summer" framed poster in my cabana. Absolutely "bitchin" times. And thanks to Bruce and all for the great visuals.

Endless Summer 2 is just as thrilling and wonderful as the ES 1, each representing the best of surfing of the time. Both masterpieces in my opinion. Thank you BB.

I saw "Endless Summer" in January 1965 at Santa Barbara High School with Bruce Brown narrating. With a good swell running at an uncrowded Rincon. I was 13 and couldn't even drive a car. Mom had to take us to the beach and pick us up later.

@@ricksoden6838 Totally awesome. I was born 1951 so I was 13 at that show. My mom had to drive us to Santa Barbara High. I lived up on Hot Springs Road so I could ride bikes to Hammonds and Miramar but had to be driven to Rincon. Usually uncrowded but I could only surf the Cove on my 9'2"Yater.

How can anyone not dig Endless Summer II? It's fantastic, with the same understated mastery behind the camera that allows those in front of the camera to shine. No hype, no overblown drama, just the relaxed humor, wit, incisive eye, and love for the water with which most of us approach surfing. It's a gas, man!

0:39 ah the beaver tail... todays groms would'nt know what that came from lol. I began surfing in the early seventies and borrowed a diving wetsuit from my friend Jack Rojas. Thanks Jack!
My surf buddies and I would go to the old movie theatre in Huntington Beach and the filmmaker would narrate the surf movie and give away free wax and sometimes a leash. Good times!

Endless summer 2 is a fine movie. But the OG is truly iconic. One of the greatest things ever done on a screen. I would put north shore right up there. Both movies should be made more available these days imo.

Was at a Newport Bech Wedge surf crew party around 1983 where Bruce came and showed some old Wedge bodysurfing footage, everybody was howling at seeing film of The Wedge they never seen before because nobody filmed the Wedge much.

Downey California. We have so much Surf tech history. 1935 Gerald Vultee and Duke kahanamoku made first hollow board which was at San Clamente surf museum now its at Smithsonian’s history museum. Vultee become Rockefeller , then NASA, we still have Vultee building still standing, I tried to make surf museum, they laughed at me, but I know my surf history. Then, 1960. The gidget movies. Phil surfboard made all the surfboards for the movie. Southgate , General Veneer sold balsa wood to velzy and hobbies. I meet the wonder we talked story. Well, today, I surf weekends and Drink my Coffee from 6am to 8am at Portos Bakery Frank Martinez Downey California ❤❤❤
