Alfa Romeo GTV 3.0 v6 engine bay restoration episode 5.
Looking for a good way to clean up aluminium? In this episode I clean up all of the aluminium AC pipes as the AC compressor on my Alfa.
A piece of Scotch brite with WD40 works an absolute treat!

Just bought a GTV 3.0 like yours. Getting to grips with it while I wait for the garage to get it MOTd... So far, I love it.
RE: AC PIPE INSULATION
Here in Australia Holdens and Fords of the 2000's, use black neoprene type of insulation on the AC pipes. It can be retrofitted using the split type and zip ties to secure it. Love Alfa v6s great project!
Don't forget to get your AC gas removed properly people before removal of the pipes, it's a high pressure system so if you've not de-gassed it before taking them off you'll be in for a big surprise lol if you de-gas it yourself just make sure no one sees as it's illegal to disperse it in to the air, also dont do it in a confined space 😂 lovely job Rik coming along nicely.
Correct. I did briefly touch on this in a previous episode but In hindsight it wouldn’t have hurt to mention it in this episode so thanks for that. Such practices are well known and understood by most of us but I shouldn’t take it for granted that everyone knows when many simply don’t. I will try to include such important, relevant information in the future.

For the insulation, have a look at household AC pipe insulation. They sell foam backed alufoil stuff that should do the trick and it comes pre-split.

Rick, hope the Covid passes you by with no ill effects. On the PAS pipes, especially the high pressure one going from the pump to the rack, then I strongly suggest you get a brand new one or take your existing one to hydraulic hose repair specialist like Pirtek and have them swage and crimp a new rubber hose section in. With the 20 year old hose it might look clean but starts with a pinhole leak, spraying PAS fluid all over your detailed engine bay and removing/replacing the pipe is a complete pig of a job. This happened on by V6 Gtv had it happen last year on my 2.5V6 156 and again on my 2003 twin spark spider a few weeks ago so it's just a matter of time. That trick with the scotch on the dremel gives amazing results.

If you have holes and leaks in the aluminium pipes, do not dispare. It is possible to weld them, even if they are very thin. I had my done at a friends place and they are working just fine now. The holes do typically occur at the brackets, where it takes longer to dry. Do a leak test before fitting them back again since your rubbing could have made small holes in the aluminium.
Actually Rick, interested in how you heat the garage. I have an integrated one too and wondering about some form of heating idea for either day to day low level or whilst working in winter.
Hi Mark. Forgive me. When I say the garage is heated I don’t mean permanently. I just use electric fan heaters as and when I use the the garage. I just turn them on half an hour before I start work in there. It makes a huge difference and much more comfortable to work. Eventually I do plan to plumb a radiator in there with an isolated thermostat
