- In this episode I cover a few pro’s and cons to powder coating, painting or vapour blasting engine covers. I also show you how I personally like to paint raised lettering using engine enamel paint on a sponge instead of using a paint brush.

Nicely done, btw ACF50 is an aeronautical anti corrosion product created specifically for the protection of raw aluminium. It’s an oil you simply mist on and rub in with a rag. It’s doing a great job keeping my vapour honed parts looking mint.
Looking superb respecting originality! I can't believe how clean they are after blasting.
They came out surprisingly well. A lot of time was spent on achieving a great finish.
The perfect engine topper.
Was sceptical about the sponge at first but was proved wrong.
I used a small flat brush on my 156 cover but as it was a painted plastic was easier to clean off mistakes.
Either way works very well 👍🏼. I just thought I’d show something different to give people another option.
Thanks for this and highlighting CRC as they are a reasonable distance from me and I will use them when my plenums get to the point something like this is needed. Fortunately my Busso engined car has done less than 60k miles.
Nice job! I applied SIGN PAINTERS 1 SHOT paint to the raised letters/numbers of my weight plates I just refurbished. I used some latex makeup applicators I found on Amazon. They were triangle shaped and worked very well for painting raised letters and controlling the paint flow. I enjoyed your demo.

That lettering paint method will last a few years at most before it starts chipping off or fading badly when you clean your engine with degreasers etc. Cover the whole surface with masking tape and then use a sanding block to sand the tape off the lettering, this leaves a perfectly masked exposed surface which allows you to paint it properly and is very easy to do. You can then apply an etch primer, colour and 2pac clear coat and get a result which will last for a much longer time. You can use a matte clear if you don't want it to be too glossy. I've used just about every different method to do this job and that has worked out to be the best. Thanks for the video, looking forward to seeing more of the project.
That’s a very good tip! I don’t mind a bit of maintenance, after all, I’m not expecting the blasted aluminium to last forever either, but, if and when the time comes I’m more than happy to try something different. Thanks for the advice. Every day is a school day 👍🏼

They look amazing! Good choice. I also think powder coating/painting looks "cheap/vulgar". And I also like the sponge method. Firm foam is the way to go, and the thicker the paint, the easier it is. Well done man!

Hi Matt. I plan to use the Bilt Hamber Atom Mac every now and again to protect everything against corrosion etc. I’ll see how long it lasts but I’ll just get them re-finished in the future if need be. I reckon it’ll last a long time though to be honest
Another good video Rick.......I did mine in crackle paint lower cam covers in black crackle and plenum and front cover in red and rubbed the paint off the ribs and lettering with wet and dry on a block also put them in a warm oven tightens the crackle finish up. Did you manage to get some stainless cap screws finish it off?

@@_RicksGarage Yes the stainless finishes it all off nicely...while i had mine in bits i went down the Ferrari throttle body needs an adaptor plate to fit and blend the step in the plenum with a rotary burr...easy to do but what a difference not sure if it makes any more bhp but certainly sharpens the response up highly recommended
Would a foam brush wrk better?
Wondering why you didn't etch prime first as it was "virgin" aluminium after vapour blasting and would give better adhesion.
The lettering is painted directly onto bare aluminium from the factory, also, enamel paint bonds very well. If it needs doing again in the future then so be it. It’ll give me something to do haha. I suspect it will last quite a long time though.
Nice job and respect the originality aspect, but for me I prefer the idea of a bit of colour to add to the engine bay. Having gone with yellow callipers on my upgraded brakes, I had to go with yellow again under the bonnet and am ordering a set of crackle yellow finished powder coated for my early 12v spider.
I’m not in your league with the refurb and renovations, but it has inspired me to do more!

Hi Mark. Thanks for the comment. I really like the crackle paint I think it looks fantastic! In all honesty, I really wanted to use it but in the end I just couldn’t bring myself to do it haha. Either way, no matter what you do, there are many methods which all look equally as impressive as each other if done correctly. In the end it all comes down to personal preference and if everyone liked and did the same thing then life would be pretty boring!
