I’d choose a kit. Back in the late 80’s I bought a Tamiya Avante which still works today. I still have the box with all the bits that came with it. Building it gives you the knowledge how everything works and develops your mechanical skills
Yeha except back then those were affordabe but a lot of work and time, which we don't have much free time now. Also the kits nowadays.... they are like scams try to squish more and more money from you basically given you f*ck all for the bigger and bigger amount of money they cost now. Some kits literally you you the base plate sawed in 20 pieces and the shock towers if you are lacky Tamiya kits let you built the car completely even today tamiya gives you everything even the motor you need a transmitter and battery and ready to go. But that's the exception.
Tamiya has some nice kits-some for nostalgia and some for racing. Also, some of the more so-called premium brands like Axial or Pro-line offer a few kits as well. It all boils down to a person's choice of the type of vehicle they want, how they're going to drive it (race, crawl or bash), and (in my case)-the details and cool factor of the finished product. Basically, every person and their tastes are different but as long as they're enjoying our hobby-that's cool too.
Ben Watson i agree it is a nice starting rc but they have been discontinued and finding parts for it can be difficult i would know cause this was my first rc and when i wanted to upgrade finding parts online and in hobby store was difficult for me
Again, I'd really like to see a video on choosing tires! How to choose a tire for the common applications. Why choose softer? Why choose harder? Why choose this tread? Should I be getting extra inserts? Do I need to balance a new set of wheels and tires?
There are lots of guides on that and a couple videos. It's simple though. Softer= more traction, less life, harder = less traction, more life. Now in cases like paddle tires you want the hardest compound you can get, Tread pattern varies on surface, you want deeper tread for looser surfaces. You don't HAVE to balance them unless your doing high speed runs or are a "pro" racer
99 certainly a good topic we're going to get to eventually. We have a huge topic list and lots of products in our schedule to get to. Naphen has a good reply to your question.
+Chef Boiardee First question is how much you are willing to spend. Second question (and maybe even more important) is what are the hobby groups in your area doing the most of? Personally, I don't care for doing stuff solo, but if a backyard basher is what you want, that is fine too. I bought an Associated SC10 truck because the local hobby racing groups use that chassis for most of their classes/groups.
Chef Boiardee I'd go with a 2wd slash brushed edition. it's fun, durable and could always be upgraded for racing later on. for about $200 you get everything you need to get going including the battery and charger. just remember one thing, you can drive an off road rc on the road but you cant drive an on road rc off the road.
Im a big Tamiya fan, everyone says their RCs are not the most polished. But the best thing about them is you have an option of buying kits or RTR (XB/Expert Built) versions.
I like kit rc's alittle better mainly because i get to build it. But also chose my own electronics. Same reasons he give. its more enjoyable specially when I built my RC10T and CC-01
Building it is cool, but I find as long as you get to wrench, which you get to do with all hobby grade, I get that satisfaction I need. When you're completely tearing down a RTR, you're really getting to know that rig.
Kits always! I enjoy building them as much as i do playing with them not to mention if youre new to the hobby you should build your first because you will break it and should know how it goes together so you know how to fix it
I'm 28 and just got into the hobby I bought an armma Granite blx, it was $300 not including battery and charger. Love it I just wish more people were into it.
Not everyone is able to build a kit and honestly, as a beginner, a ready to run is a given. After a few times breaking and fixing your RC vehicle and learning more about RTR, then by all means go with a kit. I disagree with the old timer on starting out with a kit. In this day and age, we dont NEED to start out with a kit. I get it, you mabe wont learn, but then again, thats not true eather. Most manuals come with a diassembled view with part numbers. To me taking a part off, then noting such things as bearing clearances, seals, spacing , gear mesh all those things, at least by taking things off, hopefully you noted the specifics and took photos. You can assorize the kit or the RTR buy adding aftermarket parts. Everyone learns and starts at the beginning. Unless someone can help you build it, then You- Tube videos help a lot. This really is an awesome video! Nice job!
Call me Old fashioned, but I believe that the proliferation of RTR has done a great a Disservice to the hobby! Allow me to elaborate, when I got into the hobby 30+ years ago the only RTR's were toy store CRAP. If you wanted a true hobby class RC, you had to build it yourself. This gave you a true understanding of the car, or truck, how it worked, how it's systems interacted with each other, how the electronics, or back in the 80's mechanicals, worked, how the radio functions, etc. I believe that people who have benifited the most are the manufacturers. They get to sell more overly expensive products, and at the same time create waste in both money, resources, and providing unnecessary duplicate products. Think radios. Only the most basic RTR'S come with throw away radios anymore, Most come with multiple model memory, and advanced feature transmitters. This means that every time you buy another model, you have another transmitter that you don't need. This bad for cost and waisting resources and creating unnecessary polution due to unnecessary production. Just Saying!
thing is, you dont need to be a die-hard hobbyist to drive an rc. If you just wanted something that isn't "toy store crap" then an rtr would be fine. not everyone wants the best of the best.
Joseph Villis - I happen to Disagree. RTR by Tamiya or Kyosho or any other model grade maker, offers a Superior RC experience and upgradability. you can do that with Toy Store RTR, the RTR Stock Grasshopper can Smoke any Store Bought RTR, like a Nikko or Tyco. so this gives people a taste of REAL RC performance without the model building. and later if it still interests them they can go out and buy a Clod Buster model and Build it, Paint it and Drive it. I began with a Nikko Super Fox 4wd and a Sears Dual Motor Monster Truck. I later bought a Tamiya RTR Grasshopper and later upgraded the stock motor with an Outlaw motor and Lithium batteries. I also got Better Quality adjustable shocks for Grasshopper. so I think Model Grade RTR have their Place.
I tell people before they buy a RC car to go to a track and watch a race and ask questions to the racers or the people operating the Hobby Shop. Also, there are a lot of videos on RUclips like this one to look at as well. I have been into the hobby since 1987 and I have learned to research the RC cars and other products on the market that I have bought through the years. In closing, this hobby is designed for fun, and if you can't keep your cool at the track ,don't ruin it for the people trying to have fun. Attitudes, spoils any good time. We all are work-in- progress when it come to any radio control hobby. Concerning Kit vs. RTR it depends on yours skill level and the time you can comment to your hobby.
David Fisher Jr 1987?... For me when i raced in early 90s....it was Team Losi vs Associated. ... Thats it.... Traxxas was Kmart type crap... Nobody had them really
asking a shop doesn't work anymore they will ALWAYS steer you to a rtr and 99% of the time they recommend traxxass and also note that with a simple look around you will see that hobbyshops only seem to want to stock traxxas. I personally have called hobbyshops out simply because they want and expect me to support them instead of mail order but they make it impossible when they NEVER have what I am looking for but mail order does every time.
I’ve built Tamiya, Tamiya knockoff, Royal, and Kyosho kits. Up until this year I’d say Kyosho re-release kits were the nicest kits I’ve built, but currently I’m building the Traxxas TRX4 Sport unassembled Kit and its a delightful kit. Everything is so clear in the manual and each bag of parts is for a step or subsequent steps in the build. It also appears Traxxas offers a Stampede 4x4 Kit as well. Hopefully they’ll have more coming too
I agree with Joseph, I started with an original frog kit with mechanical speed controller and I gave you a lot more education of the hobby. I've bought one rtr since then and it was a traxxas telluride for my kids. I've spent more money on upgrades to keep its durability up to par than i have my sc10 factory team kit which is bullet proof out of the box. So if you take into the factor of the sub-quality parts that are on a rtr vs a kit, you usually come out cheaper in the long run. Not even gonna dive into the expandability of starting with a better controller with multi-model abilities, hence not having to have all those stock remotes you need to tote around if your going out for a session. Just my 2 cents on the topic. Nice vids you've been putting out. Kits for the win.
We agree, kits certainly have their many advantages and yes some RTR's have lesser quality of parts that can sour some opinions. But we've seen time and time again, RTR's help people decide if they want to get into the hobby. Then they purchase kits when they know they are committed and ready for the next step. Is the route cost effective? Not really. But did the RTR develop a new hobbyist? Yes. Thank you for the vid compliment!
There's certainly a market for both...thanks for doing a great job explaining what it takes to get into building a kit versus the immediate satisfaction with the RTR. I got into RC after a shoulder injury. I have been racing bikes, karts and cars for most of my adult life and needed something to drive/race while I recovered, and didn't want another vehicle to work on...no matter how small. If my only choice was to build a kit, I wouldn't have gotten into RC. So I picked up a Traxxas Slash 2WD RTR and not only was a great vehicle to learn to drive, but super easy to work on...and when something does break, bend or wear out, I consider an upgrade. I've purchased two more RTR's since and still have no desire to build a kit...I want to drive, take risks and know I won't be taking a trip to the hospital or morgue when things go wrong. And when the truck does need repairs, there is plenty of advice nearby and I can often do it at the track for a few bucks and a few minutes labor versus loading on the trailer and calling it a day. This is a super cool hobby, and everyone I've met has been supportive and really helpful. I just wished I had gotten into it sooner...
Well Sir, I'm retired and have a couple of hobbies but am seriously looking at getting into RC and making some decisions about what to get going with by researching various rigs here on YT. I have subbed to your channel due to the obvious..... I plan on going a little bit kit and little bit rtr, kind of like how I got into guitars..... a little bit of rock and roll and little bit of country...;) I find that you are a great help with scads of information, kind of a one shop stop over for a "no shit" answer. I appreciate that. Thank you! I have reached the conclusion that Traxxas, Axial and Losi are likely the brands that I will start out with and whether I venture too far from that remains to be seen although I have seen a few other manufactures that offer quality products that do interest me. The controversy regarding "Kits" vs "RTR" doesn't effect me, but I can see where the Kit guys are not being taken care of like they once were and perhaps this will change if enough fans of Kits raise their voices and are heard..... I would chip in with a word or two on their behalf! You never know..... I might want to run a few kits some time myself! ;)
I've been in the hobby since I was 8 years old (Christmas 1987!) It's like optional extras with German cars. All manufacturers make an absolute killing on "Hop Up"/competition-spec options. Kits optional parts work out cheaper in the long run, as any titanium, carbon fiber, or surgical grade stainless steel hook-ups last a lifetime of abuse.
Newbie here. I bought a ready to run from my local hobby shop, but I also bought an upgraded charger and battery with the vehicle. I'm glad I did! It's a Ruckus 1/18 4x4 truck. I'm happy with it. Thanks for the video! I did notice that my truck would stop working in the gravel. I'm assuming it got a bit hot because yesterday it was super hot here in south Texas? Hmmmmmm. It only did it with the upgraded battery on the gravel, but not with its regular battery on grass. But by then, it was cooler. Thoughts?
I like a ready-to-run RC car, monster truck and crawler! I started running RC cars with a 2WD, T. Slash and enjoyed setting in a metal gear servo, some aluminum shock caps and upgrading the shock oil. It is a great neighborhood basher and ramp jumper! I admire a person that can follow a manual and spend a wad of cash on custom parts. Not my thing...I wanna DRIVE!
Honestly I have a rtr and I learn as I go. Yesterday I installed the medal axles. And I'm constantly gluing my tires. It's not that complicated to put in your own parts. I also had to get a new remote because mine had an electronic issue. Now my remote is axial and my monster truck it traxxas. I dont care all I'm saying is that u learn as you go.
Was wondering how did you get the Tamiya G6-01 in stock already. Been looking everywhere for one, and learned that these aren't released until mid June 2017.
Hi. Looking for some advice for a newbie. I'm really confused at the moment and need help, from anyone listening. I've been looking at getting my first RTR and narrowed to the Vkar bison, cheetah and dhk zombie. And so far been recommended all three by different people. Just wanting best driving, durability, speed and fun! What would you recommend?
The Cheetah is the most fragile. It's got to be so light to reach those speeds out of the box. The Zombie is best for stunts (and surviving the abuse). Chinese brands are better than ever, however, their warranty's really aren't worth the paper they're written on! Spend the very most you can for something American or Taiwanese brands.
Depends. Kits tend to be a bit more expensive because you are buying items separately. But it gives you the chance to buy what you want. So you can save money in the long run if you buy good electronics that will be transferable to other cars as your grow into the hobby.
I do not recommend ANYONE starting with a kit. RTR makes it easier to learn as you go. Assembly can be confusing for anyone that has not had any experience fixing an RC vehicle. It's not just a matter of throwing them together. The electronics needs to be purchased separately and installed. I have a friend that sold me a partially assembled Wraithe Spawn he didn't finish. Upon assembling, I discovered he had assembled a few things wrong and left a few very important screws loose in the axle assembly. I think he got more rattled with the electronics. I have many years of electronics experience so it was nothing for me. Being I have built RC Planes, boats and more, it was no big thing. I do like the fact Traxxas included a very comprehensive break down of all their vehicles with part numbers really helps. Also their offered assories come well thought over and include most hardware needed to install them. A first timer should stay away from a kit. Most guys buying a kit already intend on adding upgrades and higher quality motors, ESC and other electronics a noob would have no clue about.
Kit no doubt. That is the best way to learn. The poor quality RTRs by Traxxas, designed for people who want to only brag about how fast their xo-1 is on paper is having a negative impact on the hobby.
Kasa Pa I totally agree about kits being the best way to learn. Even though they take time to build and most likely will require electronics, they give you great experience and more customization.
1,000 Subscribers Without Any Videos? Poor quality what are you talking about there products are durable as hell I had hpi savage that broke everytime I drove it I’m not a Traxxas only guy but I’ve broken my Traxxas cars the least out of The other brands that I have maybe I’m just lucky but I have to respectfully disagree with you
I'm am new and looking for drift car kit. I want to fully build from the chassis. But I dont have much to spend. Is there a budget friendly drift car kit available?
thank you for the video, I am new to the hobby, I was given a new bright jeep. don't get me wrong I you tubed, then found a redcat Everest 16 rtr. in my price at the time, at a hobby shop but how do I get that tire glue off the bead lock so I can get better rubber, as I had to buy the 4 way wrench and a tool kit just in case of brakeage, or to much fun gone wrong lol but I started to order parts for a scx10 so I can build my own truck from the frame up wish me luck
I used to play with RTR but now my interest in in Model Grade Mini 2wd and Mini 4wd that I can build and customize. I know they are only Slot cars but the Scale Speed is off the Charts, I hope they can Further miniaturize and make a Model Grade Mini RC in like 1/144 or 1/244 scale. imagine that with high power motor and Lithium battery.
Hello! i've just started watching your website and already loving it! I can see that you know what you are talking about. I got a question or a request! could you make a video about a GP Kyosho ultima ST. just bought one and wanted to see how I clean it and start it because the one I bought haven't started for many years and I don't wanna destroy it. hope you can help me for some sort ^^ you got urself a new fan from Norway
When I got into the drug like addiction we all know and love, I didn’t have time for the kit form so I bought RTRs for a long time and always wanted to build a kit. Took me a long time to get around to build one, and it was more fun than I thought it ever could be. I still love both sides of the hobby.
The only thing discouraging about the build kits, is the fact you gotta spend more money on the electronics. So if I wanted to build a 500 dollar car, I would have to sink an additional 400 in for just all the electronics alone. So it would costs me a total of $900.00.
OKIE CHOPPER Avoid them parts are not available from Local Hobby Shops if (when) something breaks. I see people constantly ask about parts around my LHS. maybe its different elsewhere but I'd avoid. IMO
@@photographermatt I disagree. They've definitely stepped up their game, and part support has become more plentiful. No, they're not anything that's gonna blow the socks off a seasoned RC nut, but they're definitely great for those looking to get into the hobby and for a good price. Jay Tee has lots of good to say about them. The Volcano is tried and tested. The Dukono and Dukono Pro, while they do appear to break easier than they should, also seem like pretty badass trucks for what they are. For a Dukono pro, though, you'd be better off spending just a little bit more with Arrma or something IMO.
I got a Traxxes Stampede XVL the other day, it needs a battery and charger, I can't seem to find a definite answer as to what's the best for this trick. Can you shed some light for me? I am just starting out with hobby rc.
2s lipo and a balance charger, avoid traxxas crap, and be ready and have funds available to replace that POS velineon, I had 3 fo tehm the first blew a phase, second was DOA, and third also blew a phase but also released magical blue smoke.
I got a ready to run slash because I couldn't afford a crazy kit and I've had it for 5 days and I've already stripped it down to the chassis twice lol. I've already bought a new brushless motor and esc, servo, RPM A-arms, aluminum steering and camber rods and aluminum wheel case's. My friend has a fully customized ruslter that he pays me to work on and do all his repairs and put his new parts on so not everyone who buy's a RTR doesn't know anything about RC cars.
@@AB-80X yup I learned my lesson it's a good beginner RC for a kid but someone like me who is 35 it doesn't take very long to learn how to drive and want to go faster lol. Since I wrote this comment I have also bought another motor, rear axel carrier's, shock towers, shock's and a driveshaft. The motor I bought to go faster but all the other parts I just named I replaced because the stock part broke.
@lane johnson I got into the hobby because my best friend got a ruslter so I got a Slash to drive with him and it snowballed from there lol, he has his ruslter, a tock crawler and he just got a losi tenacity truggy while I got my slash and an Everest 10 crawler and I'm getting a 4x4 10th scale to hang with his tenacity I just haven't decided what to get. You're right about competition tho we are always in competition with each other to see who is fast on street and dirt and we have both been talking about getting into some kind of racing. Oh and I'm also looking for a good RC as my first nitro lol this hobby is great .
I have been hobby grade rc since about 2015 I've watched people drive and videos I said damm I really wish there was a hobby shop near my location so one day I was going down the main road to mc Donald's I've been Down that road hundreds of times and 3 years later in 2017 I just realized there is a shop right there my stupid but hasn't seen it for 3 YEARS I've walk by it
Hello I want to get into this hobbie, I am looking at a off road maybe as there is a big field next to my house. What size should I go for cos I heard when running on grass the electronics can get hotter?. Do you have any recommendations on what to get, I am willing to spend about £450.
Sounds like pretty uneven terrain and plenty of space. Get a 1/8 scale truggy. Depending on whether you want a kit or RTR, there are a few options. The Arrma Kraton is a really nice allround RTR truggy. If you want a kit, the Team Associated RC8T3.1e Team Kit is hard to beat. Not the cheapest, but you will not have to hop up things constantly. If you want to get into it on the "cheap" Redcat has some nice 1/8 scale offerings for the price. What ever you do, stay FAR away from Traxxas. It's not worth the price and it's not good quality. Don't worry about the fact that some rc's come with a charger and a battery. It will not matter. You'll need a proper charger anyway, and the included batteries are usually junk.
I like to think, kits a great also if you bought better parts and don’t want to use your own parts that are a lot better, I don’t trust myself spending $400 and building a kit and it not running right or it doesn’t work.
Hey mate, should i consider buying cheap Entry lvl Hobby Grade rc?,such as the HSP RGT rc crawler or just save money for a TRAXXAS ? if any other low cost rc brand, can you suggest me some?
RCDriver_Online thanks for the Reply!! much appreciated..I think i would buy the Traxxas Stampede 4x4 Xl-5..But,if you have other suggestion for cheap Traxxas let me know what....THANKS !!
i dont have any experance with kits but rtrs are very durable and are fun as well and are better for begginers because they are just easer to begin with i think
If you're still on the project, the answer is simple. Take the decals off and get a new set. They are usually dirt cheap. The result will be much better and worth it.
I'd like to one day build one of these from scratch Probably out of spare parts That's probably way more complicated than buying but Im tough like that
It is a bit more complicated to build a car from parts. It's also not very cost effective. There is a greater price mark-up on parts. So when you're done buying everything you need, you'll have found it would have been much cheaper to purchase a kit or RTR.
Ok I see a lot about FIRST rc cars for beginners. I got the slash for my first but now I wanna step it up a bit and I can’t find out much about it. My slash is 2wd and I would like a 4wd that goes faster then 35. It’s Been a pain in the but to find one for some reason I’m like I’ll just get the slash 4x4 and then someone says that it’s crap and I should get something else and then I look at something like the Baja Rey by losi and then they say that’s crap and I should get a slash 4x4 And I don’t wanna waste my money!!!!! So I have no idea what to get and I’m going crazy 😑 plz help #k this is 3 days later 😆 and I got the Losi Baja Rey 1/10 and I’m loving it!! on a 3s it’s jamming down the street and off road!! It’s awesome I just wanna say I no need no help now😂 bai#
Some do. A lot of the Tamiya kits do. They come with a brushed motor and an ESC that can run both brushed and brushless. They are therefore easy to hop up in time. That being said, you can get some nice ESC/Motor combos for pretty cheap now, so don't let the lack of an ESC and motor scare you. If you're looking for a kit with the transmitter, receiver and servo, no. They are never included. But once you have a transmitter, you can usually bind that to 10+ models. That means that ever time you buy a new kit, all you need is a receiver and a servo. That's why so many of us hate RTR. We pay for transmitters, and sometimes crappy batteries and chargers we have no need for.
I'm trying to build an RC car for under $200 but I need to be able receive the parts within a week of buying them because this is for a school project and has a due date of course. my budget is $200 please help!
So, I'm new to RC for the most part, except the 4 RC tanks I have.....but I want to make a custom 1970 Dodge Charger, but I don't know what to do. I don't want a street car, because plastic is fragile and I don't care to constantly replace shells, but none off he off road stuff is very appealing. Is there a half way between a street chassis and an off road? That and I'm younger, I'm saving for college, and don't have an awful lot of money to throw at this willingly....
Erratic A hobby shop that only supplies plastic crap like most Traxxas products are, is not a hobby shop. There's a name for them. They are called Toy stores, you know, like Toys'R'Us...
Caleb Worland You have no experience in this hobby, do you? Have you even built a proper kit? And how the fuck can you call that overpriced garbage "cheap"? You must be out of your mind. If you want to compare apples to apples, you can get a Kyosho DBX VE 2.0 RTR or TA ProSC RTR for less that what a P.O.S brushless Slash will set you back.
I like building my stuff if it’s a nitro and I already have all the stuff for it so I can build it and run it next day but if you get a scx10 you get a huge bag of useless parts
Eeeh, not trying to be a smartass but, www.hobbytown.com/avistar-elite-.46-rtf-1590mm-by-great-planes-gpma1605/p646452 I've been in this hobby for almost 30 years, and it's been a long time since helicopters and planes were kit-only. Just like with the boats and nitro buggies. That's a really nice kite by the way, if you're ever interested...
BriaN If you're looking to spend a bit extra on an RC one day, do yourself a favour. You might have seen a lot of Traxxas around, and you might like the design on some of the models. But if you want to spend what you have on an RC, get something better. There are so many issues with Traxxas, and they are to a large extent, not actually true hobby grade rc cars. Some of the ECX models which are quite a bit cheaper, are actually better quality than the brittle Traxxas models.
While I do agree building your rc will help to make repairs down the road I myself made many mistakes or left parts out putting together kits back in the day, like not adding o rings to the shocks and running them dry or forgetting to install an E-clip here or there. and you have to admit, the oem radios and electronics that come in RTR's today are worlds better than the 3rd party stuff we had 10-20 years ago. I feel the manufacturers have done an excellent job offering completed models that challenge the race kits.
no it isn't, you have to replace all the electronics off the batt as well as the charger ( if included) is usually a slow type wall charger and worthless as tits on a bull
David Lim You should go back to your math classes David. The higher number equals more expensive, and the lower number equals cheap. See how that works? Price out a Team Associated RC10 T5M with a cheap Futaba radio, and a Dynamite brushless combo + a Trackstar steering servo. That will be of MUCH better quality and cost less than a Slash brushless.
lordraptor11 Forget all the extras. Not only will you need to replace those, but in many RTR kits, especially Traxxas kits, you'll be replacing ESC's, bearings, tires and wheels within a month - and many other things will follow shortly.
Almost Ready To Run Models that are essentially "rollers". The model is built, but you need to add wheels/tires, motor/ESC or engine, servo(s) and remote control. Sometimes you also need to purchase a body. Some ARTR models also come with motor/ESC, but no RC system.
if anyone has any tips for keeping those small ass nuts and bolts together let me know building a kit is what I could do because I dont know how to set electronics
Big Bad Trav Uhm, this is just an idea off the top of my head, but eeeh, a storage box for screws and nuts, or a magnetic tray for screws and nuts, a pair of Petri dishes? Don't forget to use the left handed screw driver to loosen the screws...
rtr has ruined the hobby, inferior quality crap componants especially traxxass . the ONLY thing rtr has done is made it capable for persons who repair rc (like myself) to raise our rates because buyers cant fix their own stuff. for a while in also made it easy to buy a rc at a cheap price but unfortunately that isn't the case anymore and if you must have a traxxass don't get ripped off they are a dime a dozen and available used EVERYWHERE and there for are NOT worth the price people are asking for used products.
I've always felt so odd when I saw someone bring in an RC car for simple repairs. Sure, if you're new to nitro and your engine needs a new piston and sleeve, it makes sense to pay your LHS once and see how it's done. But fuck me, do I shake my head when I see people coming in to have a servo changed or a shock replaced... God I hate the RTR concept.
I wish there were more kits that come with all the electronics and and all the parts
I’d choose a kit. Back in the late 80’s I bought a Tamiya Avante which still works today. I still have the box with all the bits that came with it. Building it gives you the knowledge how everything works and develops your mechanical skills
Pro trick : watch movies on Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
@Reyansh Elian Definitely, have been using flixzone} for since november myself =)
@Reyansh Elian yup, I have been watching on flixzone} for since december myself =)
I just read your comment while deciding whether to resurrect my 1991 Clod Buster!
Yeha except back then those were affordabe but a lot of work and time, which we don't have much free time now. My first kit was Tamiya Nissan King Cab. My brother and each got one. We had a blast building it. It was awesome.
I wish there was more options for kits from companies like traxxas etc. finding a kit that isn't for racing is getting harder to find
Anthony Arnold there is the ecx amp which is a nice starting rc
Not really looking for starter rc Tekno has some nice kits but with good quality comes greater price
Anthony Arnold. - try Tamiya or Kyosho Ready-to-Run.
I bought an Associated SC10 truck because the local hobby racing groups use that chassis for most of their classes/groups.
car. anything air is a challange if you dont know what you're doing.
Chef Boiardee
I'd go with a 2wd slash brushed edition. it's fun, durable and could always be upgraded for racing later on. for about $200 you get everything you need to get going including the battery and charger. just remember one thing, you can drive an off road rc on the road but you cant drive an on road rc off the road.
Kits everytime. If it breaks its easier to fix
Not really though. Not when you have a RTR with a great aftermarket support. Traxxas or Arrma, you're pretty safe.
Im a big Tamiya fan, everyone says their RCs are not the most polished. But the best thing about them is you have an option of buying kits or RTR (XB/Expert Built) versions.
@@BananaDucshortz if your too scared to fix your own stuff and instantly call up the manufacturer, you shouldn’t be in this hobby. Period.
I enjoy building them as much as i do playing with them not to mention if youre new to the hobby you should build your first because you will break it and should know how it goes together so you know how to fix it
I myself prefer kits that way I get to know the car or truck all the way thru
Barry stark snooker videos
Joseph Vilis you are old fashioned.
clidelivingston And Proud of it
I tell people before they buy a RC car to go to a track and watch a race and ask questions to the racers or the people operating the Hobby Shop.
David Fisher Jr
Me too. RCMart Hong Kong has helped out immensely for my needs in Sydney Australia here.
Kit all the way, all the fun is in the build for me.
Bryan Goins maybe it’s because there kids and haven’t developed there driving skills yet driver not the company
I buy usually rtr and i go and play and when i have time i completely rebuild it and put oils and greases what i want
Just one question.
If kit doesn't include motor, ESC, servo, gear etc. how to find matching parts of the size of the chassis less than 1:10?
Go for 1/12, or "low profile" designated universal size. That's how I get quality replacements for my 1/10 scale F1 & pavement racers.
Was wondering how did you get the Tamiya G6-01 in stock already. Been looking everywhere for one, and learned that these aren't released until mid June 2017.
We work closely with Tamiya. We just started the build. It's looking like it's going to be a fun truck.
Idk if u will reply, but are there any fast and cheap RC kits? And that are pretty easy?
My team associated rc8b3 and rc8t3 is kit easy fix. I had traxxas 1/16 rtr just fun lol
Thank you! I just ordered my granddaughter a kit.
I just got my kit and finished building it today. It has a racerstar system and it is a little to fast for me.
I'm just getting into this hobby. Thanks for the video. It was very informative.
Ur welcome
I wouldn't mind either one, my only concern is pricing. Is a kit cheaper than RTR or not.
Depends. Kits tend to be a bit more expensive because you are buying items separately. But it gives you the chance to buy what you want. So you can save money in the long run if you buy good electronics that will be transferable to other cars as your grow into the hobby.
Where do I get a kit or what should I say when I’m in the hobby shop
Boris RC did you just say traxxas is terrible quality HAH
I bought a rat Traxxas just because how much upgrades there are
But I like building more than driving
Everything is rtr.....can't find kits these days.....back in the day it was fun to build from parts in a bag!!!
Why do kits cost more, since you have to put it together?
Hello! i've just started watching your website and already loving it!
I'm new to this have only had rtr want to go get a kit thank you for the info
Does anyone have advice for what kit I should buy I was going to shop online
When I got into the drug like addiction we all know and love, I didn’t have time for the kit form so I bought RTRs for a long time and always wanted to build a kit. Took me a long time to get around to build one, and it was more fun than I thought it ever could be. I still love both sides of the hobby.
I like building the kits but the RTR’s are much more durable for me
Great video
I will buy the kit
The only thing discouraging about the build kits, is the fact you gotta spend more money on the electronics. So if I wanted to build a 500 dollar car, I would have to sink an additional 400 in for just all the electronics alone. So it would costs me a total of $900.00.
Can anyone suggest what kit i should buy for an RC that i can use to plow snow?
Whats your opinion of RedCat Racing products ?
👍
Rc Addict 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👌🏻
Does anyone know other companies than tamiya who still do relatively cheap rc kits?
Great video! Like and subscribed :D
Awesome. Thank you!
RCDriverMagazine Go to my channel :)
And had you bought say a Team Associated RC10 T5M, you'd be way ahead in quality, speed, run time. That's what you get for purchasing a Slash...
Traxxas has a number of great vehicles. I'd suggest getting whatever is easiest for you to get parts for.
RCDriver_Online thanks for the Reply!! much appreciated..I think i would buy the Traxxas Stampede 4x4 Xl-5..But,if you have other suggestion for cheap Traxxas let me know what....THANKS !!
Hey quick question are race kits more durable than rtr's?
i dont have any experance with kits but rtrs are very durable and are fun as well and are better for begginers because they are just easer to begin with i think
Very informative videos. Thanks
How would you paint a rc body with decals?
Lots of videos on the subject. You may have already found some of them by now.
If you're still on the project, the answer is simple. Take the decals off and get a new set. They are usually dirt cheap. The result will be much better and worth it.
Can you buy a kit set and buy an already painted body?
Some companies offer pre-painted bodies.
Do hobby shops sell painted bodies?
can we have a link to the tools
well, too bad "kit" and "traxxas" are two words that will never bind.
i would LOVE to assemble a kit UDR!
Is it true we need to break in the engine before we start driving it? Mine is electric RC.
Yup break them in too
I've searched on RUclips on how to do it, but not really sure if it's okay to have the motor in water...
Can you replace or upgrade parts on rtr
Yes, that's what I did with my first rtr rc
thanks
I'd like to one day build one of these from scratch
Probably out of spare parts
That's probably way more complicated than buying but Im tough like that
not really. i'm builiding a traxxas rally from stampede 4x4 and slash 4x4 parts. pretty close too.
naphen
Sounds great
How's it coming
It is a bit more complicated to build a car from parts. It's also not very cost effective. There is a greater price mark-up on parts. So when you're done buying everything you need, you'll have found it would have been much cheaper to purchase a kit or RTR.
RCDriverMagazine
Yeah I thought so
Though it could be a fun project nonetheless
With the kit you can build it how you like for cheaper.
Do kits come with the electronics
Immortal Legends I have no idea mate just thought I'd drop a reply. Hope you feel special and good luck :)
Immortal Legends there's always a rally car chassis, it has a street look but has more suspension travel and durability for the dirt.
Kit
Cool video
I have a Traxxas Slash and I want to replace the tires how tight should I tighten them.
snug
See, if you had built the car yourself, you'd never have to ask such a simple question.
The nearest hobby shop near me with in 45 mins only supplies traxxas rip
Erratic traxxas are great though. Cheap fast and tons of hop up parts from a lot of companies.
Erratic
A hobby shop that only supplies plastic crap like most Traxxas products are, is not a hobby shop. There's a name for them. They are called Toy stores, you know, like Toys'R'Us...
Caleb Worland
You have no experience in this hobby, do you? Have you even built a proper kit? And how the fuck can you call that overpriced garbage "cheap"? You must be out of your mind. If you want to compare apples to apples, you can get a Kyosho DBX VE 2.0 RTR or TA ProSC RTR for less that what a P.O.S brushless Slash will set you back.
I like building my stuff if it’s a nitro and I already have all the stuff for it so I can build it and run it next day but if you get a scx10 you get a huge bag of useless parts
dude i have a problem my esc and my receiver keeps flashing red can you help me please ?
Try to "bind" your radio system again following the steps in your instruction manual.
I got a rtr and it lasted two days. I'm trying a kit now.
then you need to maintain your rc. buying a kit makes no difference.
naphen I meant the gears stripped. The kit has metal gears.
then purchase metal gears for it. what model is it?
Good to hear you are sticking with the hobby!
naphen I already took it apart and turned it into a boat.
cool video
I would always rather build. I'm also into helicopters and airplanes, which if you fly nitro, don't come RTF
Eeeh, not trying to be a smartass but, www.hobbytown.com/avistar-elite-.46-rtf-1590mm-by-great-planes-gpma1605/p646452
I've been in this hobby for almost 30 years, and it's been a long time since helicopters and planes were kit-only. Just like with the boats and nitro buggies.
That's a really nice kite by the way, if you're ever interested...
I wish I could get an expensive truck like a traxxas or even just a ecx
ECX does have some inexpensive kits. The ECX Amp is a complete kit with batteries and charger for $140.

If you're looking to spend a bit extra on an RC one day, do yourself a favour.
How old should a child be to build a Kit?
Bare in mind my own mechanical experience is with bicycles.
Howard Carter RT probably 12
While I do agree building your rc will help to make repairs down the road I myself made many mistakes or left parts out putting together kits back in the day, like not adding o rings to the shocks and running them dry or forgetting to install an E-clip here or there. and you have to admit, the oem radios and electronics that come in RTR's today are worlds better than the 3rd party stuff we had 10-20 years ago. I feel the manufacturers have done an excellent job offering completed models that challenge the race kits.
As always, RTR is always cheaper than buying kit ya! 😅
no it isn't, you have to replace all the electronics off the batt as well as the charger ( if included) is usually a slow type wall charger and worthless as tits on a bull

You should go back to your math classes David.

Forget all the extras. Not only will you need to replace those, but in many RTR kits, especially Traxxas kits, you'll be replacing ESC's, bearings, tires and wheels within a month - and many other things will follow shortly.
👍🏻
In case you care, I’m the 1000th like.
artr?
Almost Ready To Run
Models that are essentially "rollers". The model is built, but you need to add wheels/tires, motor/ESC or engine, servo(s) and remote control. Sometimes you also need to purchase a body.
Some ARTR models also come with motor/ESC, but no RC system.
do you sell use one
I just go to amain for everything
The rtr is batter
If it's your first rc you need to get a kit and build your first car or truck, learn something.
if I cant assemble it I don't want it plain and simple
Well, when you buy an RTR, you'll have to tear it down anyway so that everything is done right and loctite is used where needed.
if anyone has any tips for keeping those small ass nuts and bolts together let me know building a kit is what I could do because I dont know how to set electronics
K1NG1 Gaming loctite
I mean keep them together when they are off the rig
Big Bad Trav
Uhm, this is just an idea off the top of my head, but eeeh, a storage box for screws and nuts, or a magnetic tray for screws and nuts, a pair of Petri dishes?
Don't forget to use the left handed screw driver to loosen the screws...
RTR and Traxxas has ruined the hobby.
Dude sounds like dont offend my hobby we get some have the time to build shit some of us don't get a legend rc the 9125 upgraded to start
Can you give me kit call on÷
nice video,s not up with the backwards hat ! just me :)
LOL, my best friend said to go with the hat so nobody is blinded from the glare off my balding head. Thank you for watching!
I want rtr😊😊
rtr has ruined the hobby, inferior quality crap componants especially traxxass . the ONLY thing rtr has done is made it capable for persons who repair rc (like myself) to raise our rates because buyers cant fix their own stuff. for a while in also made it easy to buy a rc at a cheap price but unfortunately that isn't the case anymore and if you must have a traxxass don't get ripped off they are a dime a dozen and available used EVERYWHERE and there for are NOT worth the price people are asking for used products.
