2022 Yamaha MT-10 Review - First Ride

- Heaping praise upon Yamaha’s naked bikes has become all too easy lately. Yes, the MT-07 did get dethroned in last year’s Middleweight Naked comparison, but not by much - and it took brand-new motorcycles from Aprilia and Triumph to do it. When it came time for the 900cc(ish) Nakeds last August, the newly revamped MT-09 surprised a couple people by taking the cake against KTM Duke 890 and five other very nice and mostly more expensive motorcycles. Sadly, when it was time for the Open Class Nakeds shootout last November, the MT-10 got left out. We thought it was too old, and couldn’t win. Plus, we knew the 2022 Yamaha MT-10 was on its way. Possibly to save the day.
Did the boys from the dark side of Japan build another winner on their hands? Hit the that play button to enjoy the musings of MO's own silver fox wordsmith, John Burns and find out.

I love your reviews John. You are one of the few that spend more time on the way a bike feels rather than the copy drivel the manufacturers want journalists to spew. I feel like after I've listened to one of your reviews I could legit get on the bike and have a very good idea of whether it would work for me or not.
I had an 2016 R1 for six years and the only thing i didn't like was the uncomfy riding position. I eventually traded it for an 2022 MT10 an now I have an R1 with comfy riding position - that's what it feels like and that's what i wanted.
I currently own 2021 MT10 and want to get an R1 so bad lol
Love the stand-up comedian quality in this and other John Burns’s reviews
Bike runs at a normal temp even on hot days at the stop light . The colors and style are perfect . Plenty of power and sounds amazing when the rpms are high . Totally reliable and feels like it'll run perfect for a lifetime . There's no helmet lock and the throttle lags at low rpm . I don't ride it with low rpms so it's a non issue . I went with a 14 tooth sprocket and it really made a huge difference. No regrets buying this bike .
As someone who has lived in Asheville, I appreciate that Mr. Burns shows that he understands the intricacies of the Southern American dialect when describing this motorcycle. He properly uses the word "nekkid". For those who don't know, "naked", pronounced with the long "A" sound, means not wearing clothes. "Nekkid" on the other hand, means not wearing clothes AND YOU ARE UP TO NO GOOD! Zooming along on the MT-10 certainly qualifies.
Thank you, John Burns. Great review as always. Love your opinion on bikes. Very balanced and insightful.
I wish they'd make a Tracer 10.
No they won't because the Tracer 9 hits the sweet spot
Sure, a Tracer 10 that gets 30mpg IF you keep your hand out of it.
I just can’t get over the looks
I love it
I think it looks badass lol
Looks phenomenal in my opinion! Reminds me of one of those lil decepticons from transformers 🤣
i love this guy.
when he retires, y'all are screwed; nobody else we've seen is anywhere near a replacement.
God this bike is so gorgeous. I hope to be able to get it this year.
Good bikes. I used to own a '19. But I don't remember ever being in 2nd gear and waiting for the power to come on like he mentions in this video. 🤣
Probably choked by Euro 5 or whatever number we’re at now
@@chrissorreda4982 agreed. Just bought a ‘22 and pick it up next week, but even before I flashed the ‘19 MT-10 it wasn’t lacking lol
“4 1/2 inches it’s big enough” yeah my girl tells me the same thing!
Great reviews as usual 👌 . Best regards ✌️
The King of the MT's was, and always will be, the MT01. A bike before its time.
Great review! The old model did not have lean sensitive ABS as it didn’t have an IMU.
Here to see John say 'nekkid' and rock the aerostich suit.
Brilliant review
Hopefully a face-lift version soon , I can't upgrade to something i don't feel great on, bike seems unfinished and panels missing.
jason : MT-10 has intentionally an industrial styling. It won't be face-lifted until 5 years. This model just came out this year (2022).
It's a naked bike, panels definitely not missing
@@lensoprezole5322 yes I know very disappointed with the looks , I would of upgraded as I know its a better ride, but just don't like the design.
@@lilllwizzzle so is the old mt10 a naked , however that looks unique and intimidating, the new one look like a mt09 with a twin headlight .
Nice job John, it be nice if you do more commentary while you are riding.
I’d love a XR 10 with a round headlight. I hate that bug eyed front and the impression that parts have been stolen off it.
Why aren’t you at EICMA ? Motobob killed it there with his coverage.
Would have loved to get this but couldn’t get over how far the front housing hangs from the bike. Went with the r1.
Amazing!
Great review
They somehow managed to make the front end look even worse than the first gen. And the wheel color is heinous…
Cayan is ugly and would be a pain to keep wheels clean
You have a picture of an Indian by your name and you're complaining about an ugly motorcycle?
@@monkeyCmonkeyDoo yup. Indian ftr1200 scout concept is a good looking bike. The mt10 is not.
Is that a negative?
I love everything about this bike, except for the color options. We need more than all black and Turquoise and red as options.
Here in Europe we get a lovely all blue colour option as well.
Yamaha needs an Italian designer lol
Like the guy who did Diaval....oy
Great intro. Love the cinematography and the music selection.
That yellow riding suit is absurd though.
It looks like a bio hazard suit.
Really? That bothers you? You need to get outside and ride more.
@@morley3810 My comment bothered you? Really? You need to get out and ride more.
@@zero11010 Ok, I'll go out this afternoon. Looks to be a nice fall day here. Put some km's on my old GSXR 1100M.
@@morley3810 hope you have a good time. I’ve got a ride scheduled tomorrow to explore some mountain roads in Northern California on an R6.
… it’s like we are both here because we enjoy the same hobby!
Nice ride
Did they fix the fuel mileage? I know the 50 mile round trip commute for work kills half a tank on my 2018. lol.
Zach Courts is doing a daily rider video soon, he always talks about fuel economy. Should be interesting to hear what he says about that.
Nope, still crap on fuel unfortunately.
Who else aggrees the new higher gearing is almost dangerous taking off from a stop? Is it really worth better gas milage? I only have 2700miles on it and seriously thinking to gear it down a teense. Other than the bike being constantly EMP TEE my biggest complaint is the massive Cat! WHAT an eye sore! and heavy! Nice and quiet though I do like that! Personally I wish it had some real wind protection ....the OEM "touring windshield" at $250 bucks does look nice, sort of R1 bubble look but its pretty worthless for me at just 5' 10"...I mean you CAN do a ridiculous low hunch behind it with elbows sticking out looking the moron but only as a minute of wind reprieve maybe. Unless you have ridden motorcycles with good windprotection you dont realize how wonderful it is or can be depending
This vs the gsx GT overall??
Me likey. Me wantey. Love my ktm, but man. Something as small as a nail in a tire takes my dealer over a month to put a new one on. Muffler bushing took weeks to arrive. Cool bike but in my experience, parts for it take way too long to arrive.
My 1290 SAR had a blow motor from a known issue and I was blown-off by KTM, so never buying another.
@@thepassionofthegoose5472 although nothing like that had happened to me in terms of engine failure (wood knock). Im in a similar boat. I’ll not be purchasing another.
in person it is way more beautiful!
Can U make a video for FJR1300 ? Thx
For some reason I want a Schlitz after watching this.
It looks awesome, sounds awesome. I just feel like I would never use gears 4, 5, and 6.🤣
Don't know why but I like the bike's looks 👌 but more importantly I would love ❤️ ♥️ to spend time on one 😉
Great bike, but the engine braking is nuts. Also very hot in the city. Otherwise awesome.
MT-10 or 1290 Super Duke?
Neither. Aprilia Tuono all day long.
Do you want reliable bike? Get an MT10
@@MrWolf2212 Too ugly.
The headlight kind of looks like the Indian brand motorcycle Mahindra Mojo.
Best bike in class, Gen 1 owner here...can't think of anything I'd sell it for.
S1000R 😮
Nah. Aprilia Tuono murders the MT10 in every way. Looks, performance, handling and engine. That V4 is unreal. Try one. You will not regret it.
@@fyorbane on track, sure. On the road the MT-10 is a superior bike. Ridden both, bought the MT-10.
@@TheDriversPerspective Same here. Have you ridden the latest standard Tuono. It is a much better road bike with higher bars and a dual seat and a half fairing with an effective screen. The performance on track and road is superior to the Yam. The chassis is incredible. The V4 is better in every way. The dash is bigger and clearer and easy to use. So I bought one. Again try the latest one. The standard model is the tops for the road.
@@TheDriversPerspective Also the fit and finish on the Tuono is miles better than the MT10.
Showing her age now though. The update that surely won't be far off will be welcome.
That thing is absolutely hideous, I’ll still keep my FZ1 lol
I saw a movie where Jackie chan wore that jump suit
Too bad it's so ugly at least the price is decent for what you get. John and his cruise control, pretty sure it gets 3 out of 10 pts just for that.
Teal is my favorite color, to me this bike is just 🤌
Love my MT-09, so I guess that means I'm a hooligan...
At that price I would look for the GSX-R1000. It's about $1000 more.
I won a scam. Great!
75 mph in 1st gear!! :o
Those pillion pegs look awfully high.
Midwest? "neck ed bike" lol growing up in california with my midwest pronunciations (which I learned from midwest raised parents) it cracked my friends up whenever I said "neck ed"
It might be a nice bike but you can't buy one, not in these parts. No local dealer has any for sale and the one nearest us only received one lousy unit for the whole year.
That's okay by me, though, as the looks of that thing are so far from what a motorcycle looks like where I come from, I'm not sure I could even take it seriously, much less shell out fifteen, eighteen grand for one.
They did the entire MT line up dirty with new headlights. Each one is gross.
Been out all year and still can’t get them in Ohio
4:08
'Aural' , Burnsie
not 'Oral'
😉
I’m sure it’s a good bike to ride but to look at what a mess.
The rims 🤮
Please increase the horsepower. It is less. Look at Streefighter and ZH2.
Had the old one seat horrible, it was like riding a chainsaw had it for 1 year sold it
If it wasn't so damn ugly. Hideous looks aside for everything you get that is a tough price to beat for the competition.
Yamaha makes some of the best engines in the market with the ugliest looking bikes 😂
It's a cool bike but the toothpaste colored wheels make it look awful. It would look so much better all blacked out.
They do, that's why I ordered one in tech black. Plus the black akra silencer and a whole load of other black accessories.
I think they look fresh and zesty
Great bike. 👍🇨🇦🤪
what if they would increase the displacement to say 1100 cc .. just thinking out loud
Saying R11 doesn't quite hit like R1 does.
yay, even worse fuel range
@@pnwgreg300 who cares tho
@@lovelessissimo we leave that to the marketing dpt to solve
@@avrc9285in his defense, the MT10 does get pretty bad mileage. Like, bad enough that it matters.
It’s just not as handsome as the ‘21s
You lost me at "high achieving extroverts'
At this point maybe Yamaha don't even have a design team. If they do, they don't give a F*CK anymore. Only fanboys would love this sh*tty look!
Still ugly as sin. YAMAHA--make a XSR-1000 and make stupid money. Give me 10% for the idea.
For f....... sake Yamaha, just make an XSR1000. Stop arsing around and do it.
Nice bike & review. I think this is a really good bike overall but the whole MT range just doesn't look quite right to me. The front end & proportions just seem wrong & a bit ugly on all of them.. Although this MT10 is a great well priced machine so I could live with the looks.
2022 XSR 900 would be my choice. I don't like the look of any of the MT bikes.
It’s a weird looking bug. It also looks like poop
A neked bike huh?
I thought about buying this bike, but I just couldn't accept the horribly fugly color schemes, so I happily spent my 14K on something else.
On what lol ? “Something else “
@@agentmartagentmart9122 I was about to ask the same...
Same here until I saw one SP in person, now I spent more time looking at it in my garage than my Italian superbike😂
S1000R …slightly used of course
@@motorcyclemichael2182 nice! Can’t go wrong with that 👍
It's just too fugly. No can do.
Can't ignore how bad it looks
I'm not sure I want a bike that has plenty of poop.
just one word describes it.. FUGLY.. its a mess
It’s so ugly it’s almost attractive
I don't know who has a more bizarre way of speaking: JB or Sideshow Bob from over at Motorcyclist.
Burnsie and Adam are two of my favorites.
To each his own.
