"I don't talk because if I say any little thing I get banned" and "Noone is in voice because there are so many abusive and toxic people and they never get punished" is mind boggling that both are relatively true.
First big dropoff in voice was when they started recording you. Second one was sometime around season 2-3 when they started using AI to process reports. False reports went through the roof. I was tagged by one and I'm a nobody. So here we are. I'm not in chat or voice anymore. I queue with 1-2 other people and we use discord, and ignore the other players. Didn't want it to be this way, but that's how it is.
Only those who can communicate effectively can lead group discussion in a positive manner, even during extremely difficult games. It's a skill most people surprising don't have. Took me a while to get it down, but I got it down, and if I can do it so can anyone else😊
I’m a very talkative person in real life and therefore and in game. Comms is one of my favorite parts of comp when a team can actually have and use them at least for me. Unfortunately some people are so damn mean it discourages people from talking but I find that games where my team is conversing tend to win more and they are the most enjoyable for me
It's soooooo nice when the tank especially is in voice and we are actually sharing strategy and hard comming. This is still peak overwatch in both 6v6 and 5v5.
I’ve been verbally assaulted so many times, when I play tank most out of all the roles and it’s made talking in voice chat impossible for me, I’ll join vc to listen to call outs but as soon as people start being toxic to me if we are losing or I make a mistake I leave vc so I can focus on my game and not let my toxic teammates get in my head
Tbh for someone who doesn’t talk while playing comp the reason is bc I’m not very good at giving coms and I feel like it’s better to listen to someone else lead then lead my self
You can still talk after you die. discuss what’s going wrong, talk about what ults they might have, and plan for the next fight. There may be information you noticed that nobody else did
As a mercy player, we often have a bigger view of the teamfight, BUT I don’t comm anymore bc ppl would call me homophobic slurs, so I am a comms wheel player permanently

I don’t join Vc while playing tank because people will say to swap, even if I have more damage than both dps combined on a meta tank. I don’t think people say useful things in voice chat. If you have even the slightest habit of talking back or tilting, better to just not be in voice chat. The game is toxic as hell. Streamers also contribute to it, saying stuff like “Screw all Ball mains” etc. The Sym hate in particular happened almost solely because of streamers, and you cannot play Sym to this day without being flamed and reported for playing her.
As far as comms go, I think a large part may be people are nervous/anxious about communicating because it makes you a target for any toxicity, along with a lack of confidence in your communication and actions. Once you actually just rip the band-aid off and start doing basic call outs ("Bap is 1 hit!" "Doom diving me!" "Orisa anti'd!") and accept that you WILL MAKE MISTAKES, it helps a lot
I used to play a lot of overwatch 1, had the best time in my life in voice chat, used to be able to make loads of friends. These days in overwatch 2, the only time I hear anyone talk is to complain and whine instead of finding solutions on how to work together. I miss having friends to play with. It would probably make OW2 more fun to play.
I made SO many friends in OW1, due to vc being relatively chill and the find a group thing as well. I still play with a couple of them actually, but I have not made any new friends in OW2 due to the toxicity.
I was chat banned once for 6 weeks for saying "bap, that was bad", because he saw ME make a bad play. I'm not joking. You want to know why no one talks? That's why.

Tbh, talking just isn’t worth it. Most players give useless comms (need a shield, let’s get more damage) or are outright hostile. Every time I speak on the mic it’s just hostility

That first one is the real reason imo. I grew up in the Xbox Live era so some voice chat toxicity is absolutely not stopping me from joining VC. But in my experience it's not worth dealing with if you're under, say, Diamond, because almost nobody knows how to comm anything effective under that rank. And it's not an Overwatch-specific thing: I play Diamond to Master in a bunch of games and it's universal. Up til a certain rank people only know how to comm "I'm dead," "X is dead," or the worst, "X is one-shot" comms when X got away 30 seconds ago and is now full health and ready to rock again.
I don't join vc because 90% of the time i run into little baby's getting overly upset about one thing or another. Much more nice to just chill and play my game
Know how you feel. If you're diamond / plat, its gonna get worse cause thats where the majority of players are. AKA the ones who think they have the right to criticize you even though you've been owning the enemies as a Zen(like bruh, its QP...RELAX). And I haven't said a word(cause I didn't wanna roast them.....and I'm too lazy). But....... i gotta give credit to the community as well, my other teammates defended me altho they're strangers. As Venture going against a Widowmaker I could usually use burrow to race into the back where she is and use the launch and drill Dash to jump to the position where the Widow is and rush her down
Back before the voice was an easy way to get banned, i didnt talk cause as a women you generally get more slack playing tank or just playing in general.. ppl will write in match chat "ggs, we got a woman as tank" and stuff like that. At least from the experience ive had, talking in chat makes me more of a target than just being a silent tank. Not to mention tank already get most of the slack.
I think comms have been the breeding ground of tilt because players misunderstand what comms are for. I dont think comms are ever helpful for directing other players, especially in lower ranks. Players just arent going to learn some insane concept midmatch, if they arent already doing it, which causes backlash. Instead i think comms can be helpful for general information, and while the ping system is a substitute for this I still think comms have far more decisive delivery.
answering the first question as a mercy main i’m a very mobile mercy, i like to flank and be agro so tell me when we are going and what’s the plan of the flank but im also very cautious and will play my beam length, be sure to have a plan to disengage bc i most likely will fly back faster than you tell me when you have your ult so i can pocket or valk with you i will ping a lot so please don’t ignore them and if i unlink my beam from you it’s bc im helping someone else for a moment so be sure to check why i also want to hear when you DONT want me to rez you bc you want to swap that’s all
There's definitely been a shift in comming from OW1 to OW2. I think that changing the game from 6v6 to 5v5 did somewhat influence the lack of comms in ranked nowadays. Less people in game = people are less likely to talk. 6v6 playstyle also made tanks individually weaker, so they had to communicate with their team to survive and win teamfights. The game is also f2p now so people who might not be able to afford a mic could be playing.
I definitely think the shift to 5v5 just decreased teamwork all around. Both the tank example you gave but also just the overall design of heroes now. Everyone has some form of self-sustain and damage-oriented abilities, which just incentivizes selfish gameplay instead of relying on team synergies. I want to say the F2P aspect could affect it as well (more casual players = less people care about actually winning), but I haven't noticed that issue in other F2P games to the same extent. I hear people using voice all the time in games like Apex and The Finals. It's likely a combination of the decrease in team reliance and the way Blizzard is policing comms now.
Can confirm that people get suspended for pretty much no reason. I have played ow since 2018 and have never had an account action, until i picked up sombra. When i return, im disabling chat just to have a defence for my self
You see players in high levels not communicate effectively and it just progressively gets worse as you go lower in rank. Using the Ping and focusing on your own play are superior means of communication.
I used to do full shot calls for years, but for years no one listened or even understood even if I articulated as well as I could. Some people who desperately want people to join VC don't even talk and just expect you the IGL to just comm for them. Towards the end of my try hard comm stage people just listened to me talk gave no push back until a plan didn't work then called me ass. As I got higher and higher elo there were some games that were actually nice and it was just straight to buissness comms but I also have had multiple bad experiences with most if not all content creators I ended up queuing into. Also if you say "join VC" and don't say a word your the problem, it's discouraging as someone who used to love shot calling to just have no one else respond and at worse not even listen like what's even the point. I save that energy for scrims now when they happen or when i'm with friends no use going through 90% games of toxic or useless comms for the 10% of good ones
This speaks to my soul! I feel the same way. In the lower elos I am in comms are radio silent until the game goes bad(and everyone wants to complain) or everyone is talking over each other trying to be the leader and then getting mad when no one is following THEIR plan.
@@ggolden nah, the game is still fun solo queueing if you don’t take it too seriously. With the ping system you hardly need text chat anyway, and most players just wind up distracting me from playing well because they’re just barking at me instead of constructive criticism

"Tell people how to play with your main" I like this idea. For me, as a genji player. My hardest matches are always the ones where the enemy supports are sitting together on a beach in hawaii with full health and cooldowns, and im the only one looking at them. This is because I like to take somewhat deep angles and just poke people down until someone falls below half health, and I'll try to start a dash snowball. This becomes a very overpowered playstyle when i have teammates who are just constantly bringing someone below half health for me. Tldr "just shoot the supports." Chances are, im already looking at them. So, any damage you deal won't go unnoticed. In fact, im looking for that. Even if its a few body shots, I'll see that, and it will help out a lot.
as a bastion main, genji is genuinely my favourite dps to duo with. they counter each other’s counters, and the blade + turret combo leaves enemies confused on who to focus on.
As a tank I had to turn off coms in ranked ever since overwatch 2 dropped, I get nothing but shit from my teammates in practically half my games. If the feature isn’t going to be used productively to help the team then I see no reason to keep it on
For all the people who say that they dont use comms cause of toxic players, allow me to refresh your mind: report and mute options exist. If someone start behaving toxic, even if they're the tank, report em, mute them if its really bothering you and tell the other teammates who are using the vc to do the same. Dont let a few people ruin your game

hot take !!! I think shield health should act as a layer that takes the shape of the character, think of it like rein shield but only for you taking your body shape, that way anyone who have it can be immune to any CC as long you have that blue shield health around you , once you brake it you can get CCed again , the main heroes who should have it are the characters who are easily CCed like Hog, Ball and muaga (maybe bastion), it doesn’t have to be directly in their health you can add it in their skills so you can have timed small CC immunity but not immortality since they still can be killed, this will open more counter play option rather than keep buffing hp and DR numbers and will also give the blue health somthing different since everybody have self heal now what do you think.
@@kareematif7710 Let’s say they take Sigma, Symmetra, Lifeweaver, and Zenyatta (the other dps can choose whatever they want). They would basically be meta, and very hard to counter unless you mirror. It would make playing tank even more non fun, and more “loopable”. Everybody would just go Ball, Sigma, or Zarya. The last 2 already have their own CC preventing abilities, and Sigma even has his own CC. And as a Roadhog main, playing against the same combo I mention earlier sounds like hell to me. I would basically become an ult battery and never be able to hook anyone.

10:04 I think the reason why venture us a counter to widow is that you can engage onto her VERY quickly. I'm a venture main now and I get widows alllll the time unless the widow is REALLY good. Plus she doesn't have much hp so you can just drill dash and primary fire to completely exterminate her
The last time I talked in OW voice by asking someone to come around a wall so I could heal them, I was called every racial slur and sexist in the book. Did anyone help out? No, they egged them on and everyone laughed. What’s worse is I have the VOD of this happening (I’m not a streamer but I clip my videos to send friends funny moments) They then proceeded to harass me on multiple platforms. So yeah, I’m not talking and I won’t talk.
I'd happily take longer queues to get only people in voice even just listening. No teamplay is boring play. And no one pings at high plat or below. Starting each game with "pls join voice" brings like 2-3 in on average and is a good way to start comms.
Venture is good against Widow because you can easily reach her and distract her. A good rollout will bring you in front of her and force her to reposition or take a bad smg duel. Lowkey pretty good
Advice to 'what to do if your Mercy is attached to the tank". I just climbed out of silver finally this season (now gold 2), and I think what can work is Lucio, because you can play more aggressively, speed your Dps to help them get out and aoe healing mens you can heal both dps and yourself even if they are very mobile, and you can heal and damag at the same time. An other could be Lifeweaver or Kiri bc they are easier to heal DPS with (homing heals). You can also go Moira and be more proactive and try to secure kills. Silver is very dumb sometimes, so you can get away with a lot on Moira.
Congrats on climbing out of Silver!! I’m plat 3 for support rn and obviously I’m not the best player but I would avoid playing Mercy Lucio. With Mercy and Lucio as your supports it’s just not enough healing for the tank especially now with the dps passive being reverted and Mercy suffering because of it. I’m not saying never play Mercy Lucio because I’ve seen it work sometimes but I generally don’t like playing that support duo. I will agree with you about Moira though because you can get away with a lot lol
I have my mic on, but rarely talk. Why? Because I call shots as if I'm unable to walk and chew gum at the same time. By the time I've provided a coherent statement, the moment has moved on to something entirely different. My comms are worthless. About the only value I provide in comms is I'll let my team know when our respawns are staggered. Which genuinely does help. I use push-to-talk, which also hinders my ability to play and talk at the same time. I don't use open mic to spare my team from the random crap spouting out of my mouth. Seriously, who wants to play with someone who yells, "What?," every other minute. Or random curse words? Sometimes, I'm just making random noises, who wants that? No one? I wouldn't either. Also, I'm pretty sure sound in my headset bleed into my mic, which I haven't tested in a while. Instead, my ping comms are solid. I'm able to play and ping at the same time pretty well. Unfortunately, most people don't pay attention to pings, so ya.
I personally don’t join vc in most fps games cause of exactly the toxic players, I’m already a introvert and have a little social anxiety, so for me it drains a lot of energy just to get enough courage for vc. When I do join vc I always get the same results, being barraged by toxic players trying to put me down, ofc it’s discouraging to use vc when someone is constantly toxic towards their teammates
I'm a widow main, I am kinda of like a support in the sense please just look at me if they have dive characters, my main ones are doom, winston, sombra, and tracer. I am pretty good at being self sufficient, but helping me makes it so I can also get more picks. Its a win win situation. To talking in voicechat I want to, but I'm a girl, I'm just scared of men tbh. I'll listen. but i hate talking.
for me im getting more used of using coms but i only do it when i see 3 people in com at least, ill type to ask com or no and if someone said ye then i com. the most important part is that someone start the com (still not me lol). i notice 1 person talk then everyone else just open up. or at the start u can say hi with the hud then spray then bunch of random voicelines just good vibes. people would be open for using vc because its a friendly environement. most people like me just play ow2 just for recover energy not being actice like doing charity lol so most just stay silent, no reaction after a long day.
I feel like it’s pretty simple. Lots of people are shy and don’t enjoy talking on the mic, and for two, Overwatch 2 players might be quite literally the most discouraging, rudest, and toxic players of almost any video game out there. Nobody wants to get yelled at when they’re trying to have fun.
im simply not talking in comp because in plat-diamond people are so cocky and never want to follow another ones advise or callout because they are "the best". after a few weeks i simply gave up and only used the ping menus while listening to vc

I disagree. I've had plenty of groups that I met strickly through random solo queue (diamond-masters range), and with simple coms, like just saying a heros name to kill, gone on double digit winstreaks. It's a pity I'll never com again due to the threat of account action for no reason.
6v6 maybe. but 5v5 really needs voice, especially on console where they can’t type quickly. the ping wheel is slower than talking, and isn’t as reliable (you could be trying to tag an enemy but end up tagging a health pack, tag the objective but end up tagging an enemy, or know an enemy is hiding but you can’t tag him because he quickly went behind cover) voice is that important. realistically a team who’s in voice can make callouts faster and therefore have an advantage.
I join team and comm as much as I can even if the other people in there are only listening. If you're decent at callouts it can still help. If you don't talk either or leave chat immediately, you become part of the problem.
It’s always console players too, I play on ps5 and id say I make edgier jokes than most but it’s pretty annoying when these blatantly racist and bigoted people come into comms, spew their shit and then give the entire console player base a bad wrap
reasons why console is more toxic: console players used to not need accounts for the game before 2021, and didn’t even have a report system in 2016 and 2017. so they all got used to saying whatever they want because they couldn’t get banned, and even after 2021, console players could easily make new accounts in case they got banned. and those who made so many accounts in ow1 had them all easily moved to ow2 without needing phone numbers. in short: console players had much more freedom, and so they got used to being toxic.
I'm just shy and the overwatch community is NOT a safe space. Most people only turn their mic on to sigh and flame the team. I miss lfg because you could at least get a stack of people willing to try and work together and I found a lot less toxicity meeting players through there.
I main support. Some games I do callouts and the team listens and reacts and it's great. Some games i am the only one in VC. Some games i get bullied for being a woman and a teammate starts throwing because apparently they would rather throw than hear a girl on their team? Then i stop talking for a while because i am here to play, not take abuse. It just do be like that.
After my many hours on Venture, I always felt like Tracer was one of the biggest problems for her. And this is a lower rank where Tracer and Tracer players aren't as good.
yeah i would say tracer has a lot of advantages against venture for the same reasons she’s good against reaper. just a bit less free because you can’t outrange nearly as easily. but for the most part once you force out burrow you can chase the kill really easily the same way you would chase after a wraithing reaper, its very telegraphed and easy to follow
1. I play from Nairobi. (that's the capital city of Kenya in a whole other continent called Africa, for any Americans reading this). In OW2 you are server-lovked to the best ping server (as far as I know). Bearing this in mind, As far as toxicity goes, Middle East servers are ACTUAL HELL. Leaving Match and/or Team Chat on is just asking to be called racial slurs, insulted in languages you don't understand and just trolled and griefed in general. Also doesn't help that very small percentage of players actually SPEAK English so even if I did want to talk, I can't all I hear is fast Arabic. Probably insulting me. Coz that's just how toxic ME servers are. BLIZZARD LET ME CHOOSE SERVERS GODDAMIT. A BIT MORE PING IS A SMALL PRICE TO PAY FOR PEACE OF MIND
i turned off vc for the first time this weekend due to my teammate widowmaker telling me i wasn't a team player and that i thought i was frogger (i was playing lucio) but i had just taken an angle on kings row since we had that widow on high ground so i waited for ashe to come up with me at another high ground since she was also taking a lot of good angles. the widow continued to comment on my gameplay & started to accuse me of throwing & announced to everyone on our team that i was throwing instead of being a team player - after that i just left the qp game altogether. i have a hard time getting myself to even join a comp game because i overthink whether or not im actually good at the game & if qp games are like this I don't think a person as "sensitive" as i am could ever join comp :/ i hope that widow has been having the worst week bc my week has been terrible ever since i heard them say all that lmfaooo
Lots of harassment if you are a woman and you speak in voice chat. Plus you can now get banned very easily so there is 0 incentive to talk in game chat.

My friends and I talked about this, another reason why Orisa is meta is because the instant she isn't, then Mauga meta returns because he's STILL GOOD. If she gets nerfed at midseason and Mauga doesn't get nerfed alongside her, shoot the tank simulator will rise again 💀
Ive got proof of them banning me for asking a lucio to swap. The blizzard employee said suggesting a swap in a comp game ruins the fun and that i dont have the "God given right" to ask for a swap Edit: it was a month long account ban, not a chat suspension
Concerning the communication, I got banned for defending myself against being slurred and calling out a pedophile who was harassing a 13 yo in voice. No I am not joking, the "receipts" they sent me were of these specific instances. Oh, and for specifically saying "ggs" apparently that's offensive.
Sombra main here i always try to divert the teams attention. I always go for the healers which a lot of time will divert the other support and dos this I'd the best time for my team to push because alot of time I will get the backrow support and the rest of my team will pick of the dps who didn't engage or the tank
It just doesnt come naturally to me to make call-outs. It doesnt cross my mind in the heat of gameplay to piece together useful information and say it out loud. "Person in place"
I don't talk or use text chat because I'm playing overwatch to have fun and literally every game there's people arguing and flaming and I don't want to deal with it anymore
Voice comms have basically spiraled into complaints, blaming teammates, verbal abuse and just generally annoying behavior. It's distracting and detracts from the game. Most of us are not logging into the game to make new friends or to get our socialization fix. We are playing to decompress and relax. Voice is just annoying. I don't need someone the same rank as me to give me suggestions or pointers and conversely, I am not interested in critiquing someone else's decisions or gameplay. My QOL within the game improved immensely once I left voice comms altogether.
Saying "Im so confused as to why people dont talk?" kinda smells of "I don't really have any close friends who are in a minority" because wow this game looooves to be toxic to any and all kind of minorities. Gender? Orientation? Race? Ethnicity? You sound kinda funny? You have an accent of any kind? I don't like your main? Unless you're a dps main cis white gamer guy with generic voice number3 you're gonna get yelled at for completely arbitrary reasons the second you make a mistake or even if you don't make a mistake. It's not fun. And then there's people who say "That's just what gaming is like lol snowflake" and that in itself reeks of "I dont want to have to stop lashing out at strangers playing a game for fun so I'll pretend this is an unfixable issue and that im not part of it" yeah yeah i know this is an assumption / generalization but you know a lot of people are genuinely like that, let's be honest. We can do better, you can yell at your monitor if you want but dont bother pressing your push to talk if all you have to say is "what was that / gg / ur ass / supp diff " All you're doing is making your team either angry or feel like ass. And surprise surprise thats not gonna help you win your games. No one magically gets better after getting yelled at, just mute yourself if you cant contain your toddler rage.
For me when it comes to VC , I join and if anyone is toxic , I use positive toxic masculinity. I use this in a manner that has them use their ego to lock in. I’ll say things like “hey no one cares stop complaining, we NEED YOU. In the fight please come help us. I see this as positive toxic masculinity, masculinity in the sense that I’m usually encountering hetero men. And most hetero men(that I’ve encountered playing.) hate being told they are of no use, also noticed they respond when you sced them like a child and then use positive reinforcement to encourage them to play with the team. I usually run those matches to a win. And as a support who gets randomly stuck with dps who have a combined 1.2k dps…..it helps to consolidate 🤷🏽♂️
I mean I'll use the in-game comms or tell if someone is low but other than that I don't talk. The OW community is way more toxic than the other games I play. Always crying x diff or how bad their teammates are. Although a lot of people say Valorant is worse in my experience I've had a better chat experience than OW. That's why im more inclined to give more than the bare minimum comms in Valorant.
I think another part of the lack of communication is the fact that it is a F2P as compared to a paid game there are gonna be a lot more people without mics.
Why do people not talk in competitive? You mean use the text chat? Because it takes time and depending on the system you use, far too long of such a precious resource in a game like this where literally every frames worth of time can make a difference. As for good ol mic? Idk, maybe because comp is just a glorified Quick Play. Quick Play tracks your ranks and pairs you up with players close to your skill level, same as comp. Only diff are the game rules and that each team actually swaps sides to see which team does a better job, at least I assume. I actually don't play comp, but I've seen enough videos of others playing that mode to know some of the more blatant differences.
I can banter a bit in coms and say some encouraging things... But i hate sitting there and herding my team, it makes it a lot easier to win too which is cringe to think about 😬 but... Also if i act like the "coach" of the team which is effective, after a day or two of that shit ill become toxic... Its just not for me being so involved in a retard, this is why rank means little to me... Blazed up to plat while i did that in the smoothest fashion, then i got demoted from plat because of some never before seen bugs where i didnt spawn all game and had to restart and get penalty for leave 👍 After this i used no effective coms and what happens? Zero wins and so many close moments where we would have crushed the game but for some reaon usually the tank decides to get a mental fuck up at the end of the game and nose dive solo in a way where i as Kiri can choose to die with him or leave him to die... Then team cant collect themselves for the rest of the game even if im lucky enough to get picks. If i had just told the tank some stuff this would never have happened, hence rank means nothing really.. Shows how socially patient you are more than anything to be honest 😬 Its so fucking lame being on a 3 day lose streak in gold just because some tank needs to be reminded to get his finger off of W key But also i shouldnt care, i can only control my performance at the end of the day and with Kiri theres infinite improvement to be had
Not worth using chat or voice when false reporting is ridiculously easy and there's 0 repercussions for it, the system can take everything put of context, especially if you lie in the box, and at the same time, you'll likely run onto actual toxic players. It's a system that enables bad actors, passive aggressive x10, and baiters while being horrible at dealing with actual degens. I just have both disabled. It's better that way. You don't even need comms until GM and even then, many don't use comms because of false reporting and because people usually have enough gamesense to play together anyway. I got banned from VC and I genuinely have no idea what I said. Makes the game soooo much less enjoyable without being able to communicate in real time. I’m not fast enough of a typer to be able to communicate in time it just sucks so badly
I join vc but do not talk. Ive been told to "fuck off", "gky" amd much more just because i point out flaws that i think are there, but anyone may disagree with. If i dont play a certain hero and play them the way they want then its the same way.
i was banned twice from voice chat through the years and got a damn warning a few weeks ago. Its not worth it to talk in voice. Especially if you are solo queue'ing and the rest of the team isnt, they will all report you. no thanks.
I don't go comms because while I never got actions on reports literally calling people out for using the n word and fk in a derogatory manner, somehow I've gotten banned for the times when I told people to shove it or shut up and play the game. I play on ps5 and im in a party chat with 3-10 players at a time. Either playing together or just chatting. Id rather talk to my friends while I sweat. Ill go into game chat it the ask but the never do, and yea people are toxic also.

I only talk in chat if I'm with a few of my friends at least. People are deliberately toxic and think that everyone else is the problem. Rank doesn't even matter, I have accounts in silver/gold and an account that's in diamond. Same behavior, the only variable is individual skill. Still toxic
Honestly I'm not gonna play this game until they fix the ridiculous reporting system. I had a game where I wasn't even in comms, but the four stack on my team agreed to throw my game because they didn't like the country flag in my player icon. When I realized they were throwing I joined match text to tell them to f off. Guess what, I got mass reported and got a Blizzard warning, but no action ever taken on the other players for throwing.
I mute all comms, all of it. I've found out that people like to blame. Ironically it's the only communication they make in game, no pings, no callous. But you can bet that someone is going to blame or troll. So I just mute everything and just use the ping system and hotkey buttons like ult charge, going in, need heal, group up, ult ready followed by countdown.

"I don't talk because if I say any little thing I get banned" and "Noone is in voice because there are so many abusive and toxic people and they never get punished" is mind boggling that both are relatively true.
First big dropoff in voice was when they started recording you. Second one was sometime around season 2-3 when they started using AI to process reports. False reports went through the roof. I was tagged by one and I'm a nobody. So here we are. I'm not in chat or voice anymore. I queue with 1-2 other people and we use discord, and ignore the other players. Didn't want it to be this way, but that's how it is.

I’m a very talkative person in real life and therefore and in game. Comms is one of my favorite parts of comp when a team can actually have and use them at least for me. Unfortunately some people are so damn mean it discourages people from talking but I find that games where my team is conversing tend to win more and they are the most enjoyable for me
It's soooooo nice when the tank especially is in voice and we are actually sharing strategy and hard comming. This is still peak overwatch in both 6v6 and 5v5.

I’ve been verbally assaulted so many times, when I play tank most out of all the roles and it’s made talking in voice chat impossible for me, I’ll join vc to listen to call outs but as soon as people start being toxic to me if we are losing or I make a mistake I leave vc so I can focus on my game and not let my toxic teammates get in my head

I don’t think people say useful things in voice chat. If you have even the slightest habit of talking back or tilting, better to just not be in voice chat. The game is toxic as hell. Streamers also contribute to it, saying stuff like “Screw all Ball mains” etc. The Sym hate in particular happened almost solely because of streamers, and you cannot play Sym to this day without being flamed and reported for playing her.

As far as comms go, I think a large part may be people are nervous/anxious about communicating because it makes you a target for any toxicity, along with a lack of confidence in your communication and actions. Once you actually just rip the band-aid off and start doing basic call outs ("Bap is 1 hit!" "Doom diving me!" "Orisa anti'd!") and accept that you WILL MAKE MISTAKES, it helps a lot
I used to play a lot of overwatch 1, had the best time in my life in voice chat, used to be able to make loads of friends. These days in overwatch 2, the only time I hear anyone talk is to complain and whine instead of finding solutions on how to work together.
I miss having friends to play with. It would probably make OW2 more fun to play.

That first one is the real reason imo. I grew up in the Xbox Live era so some voice chat toxicity is absolutely not stopping me from joining VC.
But in my experience it's not worth dealing with if you're under, say, Diamond, because almost nobody knows how to comm anything effective under that rank. And it's not an Overwatch-specific thing: I play Diamond to Master in a bunch of games and it's universal. Up til a certain rank people only know how to comm "I'm dead," "X is dead," or the worst, "X is one-shot" comms when X got away 30 seconds ago and is now full health and ready to rock again.

Know how you feel. If you're diamond / plat, its gonna get worse cause thats where the majority of players are. AKA the ones who think they have the right to criticize you even though you've been owning the enemies as a Zen(like bruh, its QP...RELAX). As Venture going against a Widowmaker I could usually use burrow to race into the back where she is and use the launch and drill Dash to jump to the position where the Widow is and rush her down
Back before the voice was an easy way to get banned, i didnt talk cause as a women you generally get more slack playing tank or just playing in general.. ppl will write in match chat "ggs, we got a woman as tank" and stuff like that. At least from the experience ive had, talking in chat makes me more of a target than just being a silent tank. Not to mention tank already get most of the slack.
I think comms have been the breeding ground of tilt because players misunderstand what comms are for.
I dont think comms are ever helpful for directing other players, especially in lower ranks. Players just arent going to learn some insane concept midmatch, if they arent already doing it, which causes backlash.
Instead i think comms can be helpful for general information, and while the ping system is a substitute for this I still think comms have far more decisive delivery.

There's definitely been a shift in comming from OW1 to OW2. I think that changing the game from 6v6 to 5v5 did somewhat influence the lack of comms in ranked nowadays. Less people in game = people are less likely to talk. 6v6 playstyle also made tanks individually weaker, so they had to communicate with their team to survive and win teamfights.
The game is also f2p now so people who might not be able to afford a mic could be playing.
Most headphones come with a mic though at least in the US a majority of folks who can afford a console or PC will have headphones

I definitely think the shift to 5v5 just decreased teamwork all around. Both the tank example you gave but also just the overall design of heroes now. Everyone has some form of self-sustain and damage-oriented abilities, which just incentivizes selfish gameplay instead of relying on team synergies.
I want to say the F2P aspect could affect it as well (more casual players = less people care about actually winning), but I haven't noticed that issue in other F2P games to the same extent. I hear people using voice all the time in games like Apex and The Finals. It's likely a combination of the decrease in team reliance and the way Blizzard is policing comms now.

You see players in high levels not communicate effectively and it just progressively gets worse as you go lower in rank. Using the Ping and focusing on your own play are superior means of communication.
I used to do full shot calls for years, but for years no one listened or even understood even if I articulated as well as I could. Some people who desperately want people to join VC don't even talk and just expect you the IGL to just comm for them. Towards the end of my try hard comm stage people just listened to me talk gave no push back until a plan didn't work then called me ass. As I got higher and higher elo there were some games that were actually nice and it was just straight to buissness comms but I also have had multiple bad experiences with most if not all content creators I ended up queuing into. Also if you say "join VC" and don't say a word your the problem, it's discouraging as someone who used to love shot calling to just have no one else respond and at worse not even listen like what's even the point. I save that energy for scrims now when they happen or when i'm with friends no use going through 90% games of toxic or useless comms for the 10% of good ones
This speaks to my soul! I feel the same way. In the lower elos I am in comms are radio silent until the game goes bad(and everyone wants to complain) or everyone is talking over each other trying to be the leader and then getting mad when no one is following THEIR plan.
Verbal abuse has become so bad that not only have I left voice chat permanently, I have left text chat permanently too

I like this idea.
For me, as a genji player. My hardest matches are always the ones where the enemy supports are sitting together on a beach in hawaii with full health and cooldowns, and im the only one looking at them. This is because I like to take somewhat deep angles and just poke people down until someone falls below half health, and I'll try to start a dash snowball. This becomes a very overpowered playstyle when i have teammates who are just constantly bringing someone below half health for me.
Tldr "just shoot the supports." Chances are, im already looking at them. So, any damage you deal won't go unnoticed. In fact, im looking for that. Even if its a few body shots, I'll see that, and it will help out a lot.
as a bastion main, genji is genuinely my favourite dps to duo with. they counter each other’s counters, and the blade + turret combo leaves enemies confused on who to focus on.

As a tank I had to turn off coms in ranked ever since overwatch 2 dropped, I get nothing but shit from my teammates in practically half my games. If the feature isn’t going to be used productively to help the team then I see no reason to keep it on
As a solo player I muted voice and text chat and the game has felt so much better.
For all the people who say that they dont use comms cause of toxic players, allow me to refresh your mind: report and mute options exist. If someone start behaving toxic, even if they're the tank, report em, mute them if its really bothering you and tell the other teammates who are using the vc to do the same. I think shield health should act as a layer that takes the shape of the character, think of it like rein shield but only for you taking your body shape, that way anyone who have it can be immune to any CC as long you have that blue shield health around you , once you brake it you can get CCed again , the main heroes who should have it are the characters who are easily CCed like Hog, Ball and muaga (maybe bastion), it doesn’t have to be directly in their health you can add it in their skills so you can have timed small CC immunity but not immortality since they still can be killed, this will open more counter play option rather than keep buffing hp and DR numbers and will also give the blue health somthing different since everybody have self heal now what do you think.

Let’s say they take Sigma, Symmetra, Lifeweaver, and Zenyatta (the other dps can choose whatever they want).
They would basically be meta, and very hard to counter unless you mirror. It would make playing tank even more non fun, and more “loopable”.
Everybody would just go Ball, Sigma, or Zarya.
The last 2 already have their own CC preventing abilities, and Sigma even has his own CC.
And as a Roadhog main, playing against the same combo I mention earlier sounds like hell to me. I would basically become an ult battery and never be able to hook anyone.

10:04 I think the reason why venture us a counter to widow is that you can engage onto her VERY quickly. I'm a venture main now and I get widows alllll the time unless the widow is REALLY good. Plus she doesn't have much hp so you can just drill dash and primary fire to completely exterminate her

The last time I talked in OW voice by asking someone to come around a wall so I could heal them, I was called every racial slur and sexist in the book. Did anyone help out? No, they egged them on and everyone laughed. What’s worse is I have the VOD of this happening (I’m not a streamer but I clip my videos to send friends funny moments) They then proceeded to harass me on multiple platforms. So yeah, I’m not talking and I won’t talk.

I'd happily take longer queues to get only people in voice even just listening. No teamplay is boring play. And no one pings at high plat or below. Starting each game with "pls join voice" brings like 2-3 in on average and is a good way to start comms.

Venture is good against Widow because you can easily reach her and distract her. A good rollout will bring you in front of her and force her to reposition or take a bad smg duel. Lowkey pretty good
Advice to 'what to do if your Mercy is attached to the tank". I just climbed out of silver finally this season (now gold 2), and I think what can work is Lucio, because you can play more aggressively, speed your Dps to help them get out and aoe healing mens you can heal both dps and yourself even if they are very mobile, and you can heal and damag at the same time.
An other could be Lifeweaver or Kiri bc they are easier to heal DPS with (homing heals). You can also go Moira and be more proactive and try to secure kills. Silver is very dumb sometimes, so you can get away with a lot on Moira.
Congrats on climbing out of Silver!! I’m plat 3 for support rn and obviously I’m not the best player but I would avoid playing Mercy Lucio. With Mercy and Lucio as your supports it’s just not enough healing for the tank especially now with the dps passive being reverted and Mercy suffering because of it. I’m not saying never play Mercy Lucio because I’ve seen it work sometimes but I generally don’t like playing that support duo. I will agree with you about Moira though because you can get away with a lot lol
I have my mic on, but rarely talk. Why? Because I call shots as if I'm unable to walk and chew gum at the same time. By the time I've provided a coherent statement, the moment has moved on to something entirely different. My comms are worthless. About the only value I provide in comms is I'll let my team know when our respawns are staggered. Which genuinely does help.
I use push-to-talk, which also hinders my ability to play and talk at the same time. I don't use open mic to spare my team from the random crap spouting out of my mouth. Seriously, who wants to play with someone who yells, "What?," every other minute. Or random curse words? Sometimes, I'm just making random noises, who wants that? No one? I wouldn't either.
Also, I'm pretty sure sound in my headset bleed into my mic, which I haven't tested in a while.
Instead, my ping comms are solid. I'm able to play and ping at the same time pretty well. Unfortunately, most people don't pay attention to pings, so ya.

I am pretty good at being self sufficient, but helping me makes it so I can also get more picks. Its a win win situation. Overwatch won't let me choose the mic it uses. Which means my mic only works sometimes
I feel like it’s pretty simple. Lots of people are shy and don’t enjoy talking on the mic, and for two, Overwatch 2 players might be quite literally the most discouraging, rudest, and toxic players of almost any video game out there. Nobody wants to get yelled at when they’re trying to have fun.
Join voice, call out cooldowns and position, be the positive change to vc we all want to see.

I disagree. I've had plenty of groups that I met strickly through random solo queue (diamond-masters range), and with simple coms, like just saying a heros name to kill, gone on double digit winstreaks. It's a pity I'll never com again due to the threat of account action for no reason.
6v6 maybe. but 5v5 really needs voice, especially on console where they can’t type quickly. the ping wheel is slower than talking, and isn’t as reliable (you could be trying to tag an enemy but end up tagging a health pack, tag the objective but end up tagging an enemy, or know an enemy is hiding but you can’t tag him because he quickly went behind cover)
voice is that important. realistically a team who’s in voice can make callouts faster and therefore have an advantage.
I join team and comm as much as I can even if the other people in there are only listening. If you're decent at callouts it can still help. If you don't talk either or leave chat immediately, you become part of the problem.

reasons why console is more toxic: console players used to not need accounts for the game before 2021, and didn’t even have a report system in 2016 and 2017. so they all got used to saying whatever they want because they couldn’t get banned, and even after 2021, console players could easily make new accounts in case they got banned. and those who made so many accounts in ow1 had them all easily moved to ow2 without needing phone numbers.
in short: console players had much more freedom, and so they got used to being toxic.
I'm just shy and the overwatch community is NOT a safe space. Most people only turn their mic on to sigh and flame the team. I miss lfg because you could at least get a stack of people willing to try and work together and I found a lot less toxicity meeting players through there.
I main support. Some games I do callouts and the team listens and reacts and it's great. Some games i am the only one in VC. Some games i get bullied for being a woman and a teammate starts throwing because apparently they would rather throw than hear a girl on their team? Then i stop talking for a while because i am here to play, not take abuse. It just do be like that.

After my many hours on Venture, I always felt like Tracer was one of the biggest problems for her. And this is a lower rank where Tracer and Tracer players aren't as good.
yeah i would say tracer has a lot of advantages against venture for the same reasons she’s good against reaper. just a bit less free because you can’t outrange nearly as easily. but for the most part once you force out burrow you can chase the kill really easily the same way you would chase after a wraithing reaper, its very telegraphed and easy to follow
Venture is actually countered by a lot of characters, people just like to think that “new character = op”

1. I play from Nairobi. (that's the capital city of Kenya in a whole other continent called Africa, for any Americans reading this). In OW2 you are server-lovked to the best ping server (as far as I know).
Bearing this in mind, As far as toxicity goes, Middle East servers are ACTUAL HELL. Leaving Match and/or Team Chat on is just asking to be called racial slurs, insulted in languages you don't understand and just trolled and griefed in general.

i turned off vc for the first time this weekend due to my teammate widowmaker telling me i wasn't a team player and that i thought i was frogger (i was playing lucio) but i had just taken an angle on kings row since we had that widow on high ground so i waited for ashe to come up with me at another high ground since she was also taking a lot of good angles. the widow continued to comment on my gameplay & started to accuse me of throwing & announced to everyone on our team that i was throwing instead of being a team player - after that i just left the qp game altogether. i have a hard time getting myself to even join a comp game because i overthink whether or not im actually good at the game & if qp games are like this I don't think a person as "sensitive" as i am could ever join comp :/ i hope that widow has been having the worst week bc my week has been terrible ever since i heard them say all that lmfaooo
i also turned off chat after I had a torb on numbani tell me he was going to r word me 😐 I'm going to keep vc & chat off from now on for sure

Lots of harassment if you are a woman and you speak in voice chat. Plus you can now get banned very easily so there is 0 incentive to talk in game chat.
Sorry that happens the solution I say is to talk shit back because that makes me feel better personally especially when I get a real good jab but it's not a one size fits all or necessarily a good solution lol
My friends and I talked about this, another reason why Orisa is meta is because the instant she isn't, then Mauga meta returns because he's STILL GOOD. If she gets nerfed at midseason and Mauga doesn't get nerfed alongside her, shoot the tank simulator will rise again 💀

Ive got proof of them banning me for asking a lucio to swap. The blizzard employee said suggesting a swap in a comp game ruins the fun and that i dont have the "God given right" to ask for a swap

Concerning the communication, I got banned for defending myself against being slurred and calling out a pedophile who was harassing a 13 yo in voice. No I am not joking, the "receipts" they sent me were of these specific instances. Oh, and for specifically saying "ggs" apparently that's offensive.
Sombra main here i always try to divert the teams attention. I always go for the healers which a lot of time will divert the other support and dos this I'd the best time for my team to push because alot of time I will get the backrow support and the rest of my team will pick of the dps who didn't engage or the tank
It just doesnt come naturally to me to make call-outs. It doesnt cross my mind in the heat of gameplay to piece together useful information and say it out loud. "Person in place"
I don't talk or use text chat because I'm playing overwatch to have fun and literally every game there's people arguing and flaming and I don't want to deal with it anymore
Voice comms have basically spiraled into complaints, blaming teammates, verbal abuse and just generally annoying behavior. It's distracting and detracts from the game. Most of us are not logging into the game to make new friends or to get our socialization fix. We are playing to decompress and relax. Voice is just annoying. I don't need someone the same rank as me to give me suggestions or pointers and conversely, I am not interested in critiquing someone else's decisions or gameplay. My QOL within the game improved immensely once I left voice comms altogether.
Saying "Im so confused as to why people dont talk?" kinda smells of "I don't really have any close friends who are in a minority" because wow this game looooves to be toxic to any and all kind of minorities.
Gender? Orientation? Race? Ethnicity? You sound kinda funny? You have an accent of any kind? I don't like your main? Unless you're a dps main cis white gamer guy with generic voice number3 you're gonna get yelled at for completely arbitrary reasons the second you make a mistake or even if you don't make a mistake. For me when it comes to VC , I join and if anyone is toxic , I use positive toxic masculinity. I use this in a manner that has them use their ego to lock in. I’ll say things like “hey no one cares stop complaining, we NEED YOU. In the fight please come help us. I see this as positive toxic masculinity, masculinity in the sense that I’m usually encountering hetero men. And most hetero men(that I’ve encountered playing.) hate being told they are of no use, also noticed they respond when you sced them like a child and then use positive reinforcement to encourage them to play with the team. I usually run those matches to a win. And as a support who gets randomly stuck with dps who have a combined 1.2k dps…..it helps to consolidate 🤷🏽♂️
I mean I'll use the in-game comms or tell if someone is low but other than that I don't talk. The OW community is way more toxic than the other games I play. Always crying x diff or how bad their teammates are.
Although a lot of people say Valorant is worse in my experience I've had a better chat experience than OW. That's why im more inclined to give more than the bare minimum comms in Valorant.
I think another part of the lack of communication is the fact that it is a F2P as compared to a paid game there are gonna be a lot more people without mics.

Why do people not talk in competitive? You mean use the text chat? Because it takes time and depending on the system you use, far too long of such a precious resource in a game like this where literally every frames worth of time can make a difference.
As for good ol mic? Idk, maybe because comp is just a glorified Quick Play. Quick Play tracks your ranks and pairs you up with players close to your skill level, same as comp. Only diff are the game rules and that each team actually swaps sides to see which team does a better job, at least I assume. I actually don't play comp, but I've seen enough videos of others playing that mode to know some of the more blatant differences.
One of the reasons im not in comms, is because i am in a group and im in party/group channel instead of team player

I can banter a bit in coms and say some encouraging things... But i hate sitting there and herding my team, it makes it a lot easier to win too which is cringe to think about 😬 but... Also if i act like the "coach" of the team which is effective, after a day or two of that shit ill become toxic... Its just not for me being so involved in a retard, this is why rank means little to me... Blazed up to plat while i did that in the smoothest fashion, then i got demoted from plat because of some never before seen bugs where i didnt spawn all game and had to restart and get penalty for leave 👍
After this i used no effective coms and what happens? Zero wins and so many close moments where we would have crushed the game but for some reaon usually the tank decides to get a mental fuck up at the end of the game and nose dive solo in a way where i as Kiri can choose to die with him or leave him to die... Then team cant collect themselves for the rest of the game even if im lucky enough to get picks. If i had just told the tank some stuff this would never have happened, hence rank means nothing really.. Shows how socially patient you are more than anything to be honest 😬

Nobody talks because if you curse you get banned so you just don't talk and if you're scared of hearing cursing you don't talk either.
Not worth using chat or voice when false reporting is ridiculously easy and there's 0 repercussions for it, the system can take everything put of context, especially if you lie in the box, and at the same time, you'll likely run onto actual toxic players. It's a system that enables bad actors, passive aggressive x10, and baiters while being horrible at dealing with actual degens.
I just have both disabled. It's better that way. You don't even need comms until GM and even then, many don't use comms because of false reporting and because people usually have enough gamesense to play together anyway.
Im considering making another new acc and spamming post-game gg's with "passive aggressive" again must to record it this time and show people how laughably abusable the system is because the next day when I did that on a new acc, I got several notifs lol
I got banned from VC and I genuinely have no idea what I said. Makes the game soooo much less enjoyable without being able to communicate in real time. I’m not fast enough of a typer to be able to communicate in time it just sucks so badly
I join vc but do not talk. Ive been told to "fuck off", "gky" amd much more just because i point out flaws that i think are there, but anyone may disagree with. If i dont play a certain hero and play them the way they want then its the same way.
i was banned twice from voice chat through the years and got a damn warning a few weeks ago. Its not worth it to talk in voice. Especially if you are solo queue'ing and the rest of the team isnt, they will all report you. no thanks.
I don't go comms because while I never got actions on reports literally calling people out for using the n word and fk in a derogatory manner, somehow I've gotten banned for the times when I told people to shove it or shut up and play the game. Can't do shit to me if I never use your chat feature. Easy chargeback if I ever see any action at all taken against me.
I play on ps5 and im in a party chat with 3-10 players at a time. Either playing together or just chatting. Id rather talk to my friends while I sweat. Ill go into game chat it the ask but the never do, and yea people are toxic also.

Annoyingly I’m in diamond in support but I’ve queued with a few friends who are bad at the game on tank and dps so on tank I get silver backline a lot. Total nightmare. Not fun. Dps is fine because you can just do your own thing now we have the new heal passive

I only talk in chat if I'm with a few of my friends at least. People are deliberately toxic and think that everyone else is the problem. Rank doesn't even matter, I have accounts in silver/gold and an account that's in diamond. Same behavior, the only variable is individual skill. Still toxic

Honestly I'm not gonna play this game until they fix the ridiculous reporting system. I had a game where I wasn't even in comms, but the four stack on my team agreed to throw my game because they didn't like the country flag in my player icon. When I realized they were throwing I joined match text to tell them to f off. Guess what, I got mass reported and got a Blizzard warning, but no action ever taken on the other players for throwing.
I mute all comms, all of it. I've found out that people like to blame. Ironically it's the only communication they make in game, no pings, no callous. But you can bet that someone is going to blame or troll. So I just mute everything and just use the ping system and hotkey buttons like ult charge, going in, need heal, group up, ult ready followed by countdown.
I would rather talk to people in CS2 and Valorant than people in OW2
People don't talk in comp because the report system is broken and easily abused and getting people banned or chat-banned.
Also who the hell thinks solo queue tank is easy to climb?
