Ahh, I love this. Beef and Spud. Strong rhythm sections add a huge draw for me. Flowy, light arrangements are nice, but this is just gritty. Also reminds me I need to work on cleaning up my snare. ^_^ Great job, guys!

    3) With the prevalence of mic'ing a single bass in large groups, sections are learning to write parts for this bass alone, and something separate and often quite different in texture for the rest of the section - essentially creating a 3 instrument section with more diverse options available to it. Continue exploring with these and other techniques to find out what works best for your sound!

    2) These can also apply to a section of basses trying to create a groove. The main difference here is that your foundation will have to work that much harder to become a solid instrument, as you add additional voices the timbre, tone, and percussive nature of your attacks or sounds will change, and the tighter and more uniform these can be, sometimes can create a much more powerful unit.

Thanks Sarah! I'm so sorry that Alex's incredible muscles somehow didn't make it into the shot! But yes...these boys are just downright gritty!

Good points all. A couple of things:
    1) Alex is actually quite audible, although not amplified in any way as he would be on stage. The reason you find it difficult to hear his voice sticking out is that...quite simply it isn't. The purpose here is for the section to line up hits and sounds to make the 'rhythm section' a single instrument, rather than a combination of voices.

Yea you can just listen his hits and attacks are all lined up with James

I know that but I want to hear how low he is and what not, because I'm also a bass and it's natural for us to compete to see who can sing lower lol.

Understood! But any professional bass will tell you its not about how low, and entirely about your tone and attacks. Think to yourself, how often have I ever used the lowest of the low notes for anything more than showing off?

I'm sorry, but I think Casey is the coolest. ;D

See, now this is the kind of thing that falls squarely into the "advanced" category. It's much harder to do this with a bass SECTION instead of a bassIST. Each of those necessitates a certain kind of arranging style. While this is great for higher-level bands with bass solos, I think it would be productive to cover some ideas for groove establishment for lower-level ensembles that use 2-4 basses on a more static line.
Also, Alex is nearly inaudible-he needs to be closer to the mic.
