Hey everyone! I was pretty nervous putting this video out, I typically stay away from more "controversial" topics, but this was going to be an elephant in the room regardless, so I figured ripping the bandaid off was the best way to handle it. If you disagree with any of my opinions, that's cool! Things don't get to be controversial without a lot of differing opinions. Anyways, take care of yourselves!

If this is disappointing to people, that’s fair so long as they’re civil about it. Yes, this will affect gameplay in some regard, and there, disappointment is totally valid.
If that disappointment extends to determining the game is literally unplayable slop made by lazy developers and you refuse to even spit on the game, then I’m not gonna have any respect for your opinion. There’s a notable thread going around made by one of the Bayonetta Origins devs diving into why developers go for 30 fps instead of 60, which is really insightful. And the main takeaway is that it’s not a decision taken lightly or born of laziness. Which, as people have said before, lazy devs is a lazy argument, and that’s really the sticking point for me.
I want to stress, my issue is just with the radical “camp 1” crowd. If you find the decision disappointing, but still wanna get it or, heck, if you’re gonna wait and see if a Switch 2 performance upgrade can happen? More power to you, I respect your opinion entirely. And, obviously, anyone radically in camp 2 is no better, I don’t want to act like only one side has anyone being problematic.
Like, for my money, I can’t tell the difference between this and the original in terms of this being 30 and the original being 60. This game looks like it just follows the modern art style’s method of animation making it look more like paper. If someone lied and said Color Splash was 60, for example, I would just not know it was a lie; to better explain what I mean. And… I mean, this remake look drop dead gorgeous and all the changes like the new pipe room, the battle music changing per area, the new animations and back sprites outweigh lesser frame rate for me.
…Also, as someone who’s played Pokémon Scarlet, I will take a stable 30 FPS over a frame rate that dips any day of the week. I may not be good at telling the difference between 30 and 60 on its own, but I can tell the difference between Stable and Dipping frame rates, and I HATE when games do that.

For what I heard the TTYD remake does not use the entire original source code and for this remake the devs just recreated the same environments within the engine of the modern paper Mario games (which all had a cap of 30fps if I believe) so the reasoning of why 30 was chosen instead of 60 was largely due to the graphical overall in the new engine. As for the perfect block since the game is accustomed to 30fps I think they will either do it in 2 frames with perhaps an artificial input delay to simulate the original 3 second frame input. So I really don't understand why people are fussing over the frames.

At that point that's a problem with the Switch really...
Additionally it appears to be running off of the new engine they have for Paper Mario Origami King, which in some cutscenes it ran at 60, but in other cutscenes or in gameplay, it ran at 30.

I think another factor in the exaggerated disappointment that I’m kind of surprised hasn’t been brought up is that the Super Mario RPG Remake was 1080p60fps. In spite of being made from the ground up in Unity by a third party developer, it still aims and largely maintains its absurdly high targets. I don’t think it’s necessarily a dealbreaker, but I can see why people would be confused and a little disappointed why one Mario RPG remake performs relatively close to its original incarnation while another has been halved. Come to think of it, I’ve just been reminded of the last two Mario & Luigi games where Superstar Saga DX ran at 60 but Bowser’s Inside Story DX ran at 30; there were many more factors working against the latter so hopefully TTYD DX doesn’t suffer similar consequences.
I feel there also needs to be a discussion on the confusing precedents and prices that Nintendo keeps setting for their remakes and remasters. For example, Metroid Prime Remastered is $40, Pikmin 1+2 is $50, but then Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is the full $60. There are massive gulfs in quality between these remastering efforts on top of gulfs in pricing, and I feel this contributing to more unnecessary customer confusion.

James Cameron's Avatar 2 has shown me that locked framerate is the MOST important thing, variable is unacceptable, 30 or 60 is a secondary thing to having it locked down. I got huge headaches from the switching framerate in Way of the Water, when I was the one that didn't get those from the 3D for the first one. As long as the framerate stays consistent I'm fine with either change to the Super Guard, this isn't an action game like Nier Automata or Bloodborne, where 60 would genuinely make the game better because EVERY interaction and button press is affected by it. Having only 1 action affected by it makes it not that big of a deal to me.

I’m just happy TTYD is getting a wonderful recreation compared to some of Nintendos other remakes, lookin at you BDSP

While the game looks immaculate and I generally don't let things like frame rate get in the way of hype, I have to admit I am somewhat fearful of how the Action Commands/Guards will be handled. I would love for this to be the 100% best way to experience TTYD from now on, but as you mentioned, there's a really delicate balance with Superguarding and from Nintendo's history, it's most likely it will become easier. Really hoping the game offers some kind of challenge to people who played the original a lot - Double Pain is OK, but I would have loved a Bug Fables-esque Hard Mode badge.

I wish that it could have been 60 for them, but it won't affect how I feel about the game.

I'm of the camp that just wants this remake to sell well so that Nintendo will know that there are some fans out there that aren't happy with how recent Paper Mario games have turned out, and that they want the next game to return to the series roots like the first two entries.
I'm able to live with the remake being 30fps long as it's consistent and not like the Link's Awakening remake or Kirby Star Allies where it's 60fps, but dips to 30 in certain aspects. Plus, QoL stuff like the Pipe Room are nice additions in my book, especially since backtracking was TTYD's biggest flaw. This probably might not fix the backtracking in Chapter 4, but it'll at least make the first half of Chapter 7 and a majority of Trouble Center quests much less of a slog.

I just don't get blaming the switch for being underpowered. The job of the devs should be to optimize for the hardware. This just feels like a case of prioritizing graphical fidelity at the cost of the original game's target framerate. Which feels like the wrong decision to me personally. Ideally the visual improvement would be rained in somewhat so as to maintain 60fps. Still, it's a remake and your average consumer is going to be more impressed with reflective surfaces and shadows than overall game performance.

When I saw the first trailer, I could tell it wasn’t at 60 fps and I was a bit disappointed, but it was never a deal breaker. Looking back, it was probably a bit unreasonable to expect too considering that most games on the switch fail to run at a consistent 60 if they're not a straight port or have a simpler style to them. Even Super Mario RPGs remake couldn't do that. This game is already a miracle for existing and the upgraded visuals are a good enough trade off, so I stopped caring about it. However, I still have a reasonable fear that the frame rate will be inconsistent. I don't think Mario specifically has had this issue yet, but it's not unordinary to see a game built for the Switch that runs poorly despite targeting 30 fps.

FPS improves games in more ways than graphics ever could. Faster response time=more control=better time playing=more fun. Smoother animations=better looking cutscenes and such= a significantly better experience watching cutscenes. Shooting for consistent 60 would improve games far better than graphics especially since smoother animations would allow one to create more expressive characters as well which would not work as well below 60fps due to the fact some moments of an animation get cut out making some or many actions look super janky and awful when below 60 in general.

There’s nothing that ties the back end of the game to the visual front end except the choices the developers make. So yes. It can absolutely do that. I believe the collision on Mario 64 is running at a different speed than the visuals and many modern games don’t tie game physics to the frame rate if they don’t have to since that’s adjustable in a menu many times and doing otherwise would trigger glitches and in cases make challenges impossible on lower frame rate due to frames unintentionally affecting things like run speed or jump height.

I will say though that I'm also disappointed that they chose high graphical fidelity at the cost of 60 FPS. 30 or 60 FPS literally doesn't matter to ME but knowing that one potential reason it's 30 instead of 60 is because they prioritized graphical updates disappoints me to no end.

Theres a difference between calling it "unacceptable" and "unplayable". Of course the game is playable at 30 fps, but that doesnt make it ok. I mean you could still do a film in black and white for no actual stylistic reason other than perhaps some cost saving measure and it would be "watchable" but that obviously would never fly in the film industry. Also considering that ttyd's original ran at 60 fps on even older hardware kinda just reinforces that the switch shouldve been able to do it regardless of its current limitations. Whether that affects your buying decisions is another matter of course.

So i really don't think they made the right choice here. It's just dissapointing no matter how you slice it. They set the bar with the original game so having a remake failing to live up to it in any way is always going to frankly suck.

Anyone citing the article really doesn't get how vastly different the games are so the devs should stop trying to be an apologist for IS who we all know probably didn't care which sucks cause the og IS and devs did care when making TTYD for gamecube. My answer is depending of the appeal the Game itself is trying to do.
When we are talking about a weak hardware, these kind of choices does exists, and come the debate of what should be first.
That idea you are proposing is overall putting framerate over graphics.
More frames on a second doesnt really Matter if what those frames show are unappealling graphically wise.
Gameplay wise though, which is more important, is what I mentioned comes into action, as this decision come if the framerate actually affects on a great or a lesser way gameplay wise if the Game is faster or slower paced.
On a Game like Bloodblorne no deny, the movements are pretty fast and any slow decision could spell a Lost. On a Game like a visual novel...Well, not really.
On a Game like this? Well, depends of how they actually manage the attack and defense Windows.
So resumed answer, graphics or framerate?
      In my opinion :Depends.

  • @MasterStacona
    @MasterStacona 5 месяцев назад

the game would look bad in 60 fps because it would look fake and take you out of the experience of it being a believable world
when videos are at 48 frames, it looks like a stage play and now looks fake and take people out of a believable world and into it is just a show and people want to watch a movie to escape reality and not be reminded of it
now with paper mario TTYD and the modern art style, how the art style is done, and the modern lighting would create a fakeness to it and take people out of the created world
and for a turn based RPG, you don't need a precision controls, and usually nintendo games still run at 60 even though the animations are running at a lower framerate.
but timing things are most skewed by the difference of HDMI delay vs analog delay, and the delay of the screen you play on

60 FPS is almost useless for TTYD HD honestly, if it only affects a couple things in any noticeable way (superguard, multibonk/powerbounce... That's probably mostly it?) and the 30 is actually consistent throughout moments where tons of entities are on the screen without huge dips in quality, then we're clearly getting the best reasonable outcome they can offer with however much time they could give it, plus... Things like superguard should force a player to master the timings if they want to use it a lot anyway (I certainly did in the original, but I don't mind if it becomes 4/60 so 2/30 in this case, different controllers and buttons plus it's possible that it might allow some adjustment for GCN controller like 3D All Stars which might make it even better too, it's basically a miracle we're getting TTYD officially at all again so if it doesn't have a huge bug or something... There should be nothing wrong with 30 as a minor trade-off imo
