M54 in general are a brilliant engine and extremely under rated, everyone jokes about BMW always breaking down but the m54b25 and b30 are among some of the most reliable and capable engines out there, and have a beautiful sound and handle a turbo like it was meant to be, as long as you don't overdo the boost or make sure to do some supporting upgrades. In fact the only real downside to them is the sheer size for swapping into other shells or adding turbo can be extremely tight, especially for us right hand drivers the steering and chassis leg get in the way of adding the exhaust but once the work is done, there's nothing quite like it and you never regret it. They are relatively easy to tune on the stock ECU as well. The M54 and the old Volvo t5 2.3 5 cylinder with a td04 (can't remember the engine code off the top of my head) are my favourite engines of all time for similar reasons. They never fail to put a smile on your face when the boost kicks in strong.

Get new bearings and mains too but I would of checked them with plastic plastic gauge you lay them across the width of the Bearing and then record them and see what they are to spec and compare them to the paper you can get it at a machine shop. Your con rod bearings are worn. Use marval mystery oil to some your parts it it brakes down all the carbon.

The xi's are great if you know how to work on them, it really is a good awd system. The whole m54b25 vs m54b30 is old news. Both are straight six, most parts are interchangeable, plus you can build a 54b25 to more reliable power over a m54b30. Id never ever get a CI or an E46 M3 for that matter.......sedan for life!

      Ilja,
I would look at our gas ported top rings for that application. The gapless are great but those engines need a bit of blow-by to keep them dry. This is considering the engine using the stock pcv / breather system they can pull oil trough same. The gapless is to say to much of an improvement for them. The gas ported ring will get better ring seal but not so much as to allow it to have oil migration issues. The gapless are generally only an issue with stock breather systems so depending on how extensive the modifications are. Interesting is that you can combine the gapless and gas porting on the same part. But Unless it is a modified vent system I would go gas ported.

10psi For reliable. You could do 12 PSI on pump gas but it will not be as reliable as 10 pounds. Lots of people have proven now that 10 pounds is a safe area. I say if you’re trying to keep it safe if you go over 10 pounds to switch to e85

Hey man! I’m currently looking into buying a kit for my m54 but I’m torn between going for a budget eBay kit or going for a better kit. I’ve heard if I go with an eBay kit upgraded oil lines is a must. But is there any pointers you think would be helpful? Im probably going to open her up and do a head gasket so maybe something else I should look at doing while she’s open? Thanks a ton!!

First one blew a piston and then started smoking heavy on the catch can. This second one just finished with fresh piston rings / rod bearings took it on a decent drive hit boost cut or clutch is slipping on high rpms anyway it’s smoking heavy again on the catch can and exhaust tool
