I've been a DeX advocate since it launched. No one understood or believed it was worth a try but I was persistent. I am ecstatic that its finally taking off. This is the future. People need to stop considering their mobile devices as "phones"... they are small, expensive computers! Let's use them to the best of their ability. As soon as I find a great remote program for my desktop harddrive, DeX will become my daily driver.
Do you mean to access and download/upload files to your desktop by wireless or via the network? cause there are plenty of things for that. I'm a big fan of good old FTP, so you just setup your pc as a FTP Server then you can use one of hundreds of ftp android apps to tap in and download or upload whatever you want.
My buddy and I always talk about a day when we can play triple A Games at work (lol) something like The Division 2 or the like. This is the way to go for sure!
total commander for android has lan plugin. you can connect to pc if they are in the same network (via a router) by entering ip of the computer (or probably name too) the user and the password and you should be able to see the shared folders you have. you can even use c$ d$ etc for the entire drive if use is admin. i have to admit that i didn't try on w10 though

To me the core feature of DeX is that you can run it on a tablet without an extra monitor attached. This completly flipped my view on tablet devices from "why do they even exist" to "whats the deal with ultrabooks anyway?" get a small foldable keyboard & a low profile mouse (both bluetooth) and you can cover most of what those super expensive ultrabooks do. all while running a more flexible and portable system that has better battery life and starts up in an instant. This is perfect. Now if only they would include a second usb port :X

I used the old dex station and my S8+ as my phone and my replacement PC for 1.5 years , i had a wired illuminated full sized keyboard , a wired mouse , and i added a usb hub that added a bit more utility and options , and i grew to love the dex , i had the option of sound through monitor speakers , my bt sony speakers , or through the phone speaker which did seem quiet loud redirected through the dex ventilation ports . early on some apps would not open up full screen , but as sammy updated , it improved heaps , i was using chrome and android , i could watch netflix , you tubes , browse the web , Gmail , talk on the phone while browsing the web , and the little dex station charged and cooled the phone , and was a nice little stand . i had no interest in games , but for general stuff it worked very well , sometimes i used samsungs browser which imo is actually pretty good and gives you some cool options , and on occasion may also work as a work around for the odd app . even on my old S8+ i could have quiet a few windows on the screen and it worked very well . i also loved using my phone during the day , taking photos or video , when i get home , drop the galaxy into the stand , and 20 seconds later it is up and running and all my stuff i acquired during the day was ready to go at a button press , and no transferring of stuff to cloud or to your pc , it is already on your phone/dex/pc ready to go , and that is really cool imo . id still be using dex, except my young brother bought me a pc without asking and i could not tell him to stick it up his jumper given the nice gesture . going to get the dex running again next to my bed ..
Don't have a microwave device like your smartphone anywhere near your bed, unless it's in airplane mode. You may also want to shut down your WiFi router during the night. And make sure you avoid 5G as long as possible, since it's not worth the obvious but still untested health risks.

Until I found out about dex, I'd never shell out $1000 for a phone, that just sounds outrageous to me, but dex makes it worth it. Why samsung downplayed and didn't do any marketing on this amazing piece of tech, baffles me, is samsung stupid ? they surely fumbled the ball on this one.

An excellent video, David. I cannot fathom the few negative comments. I would like to know their reasons. They probably don't like the colour of our T-shirt or size of your monitor.
We hope that Samsung understands how important the advantage it has from the competition by continuing to develop this software, congratulations on the video and the explanations it has included in your video, are illuminating. PS I apologise for my English wish I didn't make any mistakes

Kine Video Editor is the best android video editor by far, It is subscription based. I use power director and I actually really enjoy it. Its the best editor that can support 4k for a one time purchase. I work in IT but I am in charge of creating our advertising videos we upload to our website and facebook. It doesnt take anything demanding or crazy but its nice to be able to edit them right on my phone.
Ok, This is my second message on this thread. I jst came home from seapping out my S10+ for the Note 10+. I'm doing the updates now. It's amazing looking down & having 8.1 gigs of ram available is insane. I cannot wait to write reviews on this especially with Dex!!!!!
I am actually amazed by how little people know about Dex despite the fact that everyone in the office is using Samsung Smartphones. With an HDMI adapter and a mini Bluetooth-touchpad-keyboard, I can turn any monitor into an office workspace. Yet everyone seems so be glued to their PCs,. Gotta get the word out!
I've had nothing but success editing video's on my S10, DEX via rush, rather than the annoying crashes editing or rendering on my PC. (I7 16GB of ram 2GB gpu). I'm combining 5.7k 360 videos (had to set my phone to high performance) 4k drone shots and 4k camera video from my phone flawlessly. While it is limiting no doubt about that, but extremely powerful multi track video editing even picture in picture video's both in 4k work out perfect. It has also quickened my work flow mostly cause of its convenience. Scrubbing through video is so smooth i still cant believe it. If there any tweaks I have to do on my PC I do that there first and then ad it to my project for finalization and rendering. This platform is underrated not only very useful but the best of this type of alternative.
5.7k?! Holy smokes, I'm impressed! That is a pretty hardcore workflow. When I made this video, I had an issue expecting it at 4k and had to settle for 1080p. I guess they got that fixed! Glad to hear of more people using Dex and I hope it continues to grow. Thanks for stopping by. 😁
Great insight!! I've been using dex a lot when editing my videos, but im using Kinemaster. I really hope kinemaster will support dex further rather than a blown up version of the app :) Thanks for this! 🍻
Funny how fast technology is changing. I watched a video a few days ago of Dex on the new Note 10+ playing on top of Windows using a laptop. It's even possible to drag and drop between the Dex window to the windows of the laptop and vice versa.
Great intro to dex, I've just ordered a hdmi hub for my note9, can't wait to try it out. Not sure why I haven't tried it before. We used to work together at Lionhead, hope you are well!
John Bamber The newest blog post I could find was 11 months old as of today, and it says that VSC only runs if you install Linux. Natively, VSC does not support ARM chipsets.
Thanks David for sharing. When you shoot a video in landscape mode with the Camera it will display as an inverted portrait on the monitor. But when you play the video it will display correctly in landscape mode on the monitor. I don't know why it should be like that, it looks like a glitch in the Samsung Dex.
I alternate between Linux on Dex and regular Dex. Terminus is a really good Android option for ssh into my servers. But if I'm going to need to inspect chrome a lot or need a real desktop browser for something then I'll switch to Linux. The problem with Linux is that it took me a while to install different desktops
Sadly...Samsung have abandoned Linux on Dex, as they begin rolling out Android 10 (not sure if there's a technical issue, or whether they just don't have the resources behind this to support it going forward). Upon visiting the Linux on Dex webpage, visitors are now greeted with the message that the app will cease to function in Feb 2020 and that they will no longer accept/service new requests for the Linux on Beta app.
Samsung is hands down the best phones all around. I can use Dex & mobile for pretty much anything. Thanks for the upload. Keep doing Dex videos friend cause not many of these "Big" phone reviews really anything about Dex!!!!!!
Thanks for making this video. I have a trip coming up and I would prefer not to have to carry a laptop to edit and upload video from an action camera. I will definitely use your advice as I explore the potential. Perhaps new software has become available since you made this video. 👍
Thanks David for the video. Good to see what's actually possible with Dex. I wonder if Dex is possible on s9 with just Hdmi-usbC cable ( no Dex pad ) *suggestion: next time please try to put a more peaceful background music ;)
Very helpful. How do you select text from a document or browser? Is it the same with using a mouse on Windows 10? Like you click and move the mouse to select text or you still need to long press the mouse? Thank you. I'm planning to work on DeX.
I think in some cases this is application-dependent, like it's possible they will present text in a way that can't be selected. But 90% of the time this will work.
The phone can run apps on its own while you use dex on the monitor for something else. Example: you can have youtube or be working on a word document on dex. And do the video call on the device itself
Amazing work, amazing video and amazing dex. I'm planning to sell my desktop to buy a 4k giant tv + samsung phone these days... please give me some idea @david
GLasiore Thanks! I wish I could give you a TV recommendation... not really my field! If you have a Samsung phone though, I suppose a Samsung TV would mean you are most likely to be able to stream video to it wirelessly, which could be useful.
The game changer is when DeX mode eventually opens full Windows 10 with full access to all the software available in Windows. The only limit will be the phone's horsepower (and compatibility, etc). I'd fully expect full Adobe Premiere to edit 1080p in a pinch. It may be choppy with much higher render times...but possible. Galaxy Book S is full Windows 10 running on a Snapdragon processor. Windows 10 on ARM is very promising.
The way I see it, Samsung Dex is more of a backup computer than a mobile replacement. I think most people won't choose to use it over a laptop. However, there are situations in which the phone is the only thing you have on hand. Perhaps you forgot to bring a charger along. Or maybe a work emergency occurred while on vacation. Or you accidentally split coffee on your workstation and need something to work on while you wait for a replacement. In such cases, I think I would be glad to have a 'good enough' for substitute.
depends on your use mate , i did use mine as a full pc for a year and a half , albeit with no super heavy graphic editing requirements , although i did tinker with touching up a photo or two with the android software . but i loved the utility of having my computer i have on me all day long , and then being able to pop it in a dex station at home and all your stuff is just there on a big screen ready to go . and you have the many ui features of android on your big screen via a big keyboard , and your device is being charged at the same time . .
I have a note9 and have been contemplating getting the dex station for traveling. Looks like it would function pretty well for a light duty laptop replacement.
You only need a usb to hdmi cable, lots cheaper than going for the Dex station. Get one with power passthrough and you've got an entire workstation with just a phone, cable and Bluetooth peripherals.
Hi, thank you for your video. I am now considering getting a monitor or a laptop. I have a Samsung Tab A with S Pen for daily non-heavy work. Using a Note 8, plan to upgrade to Note 11 next year. My 6 years old laptop is deteriorating. I don't do\ any heavy work on my laptop, just occasionally adding subtitles for my friend's video. May I know which model of monitor you have? It looks so complete with all the ports. Another question is, does the phone being charged while plugged in with the HDMI cable? If it is, how fast/slow the charging is? Can you use the S Pen and phone screen and drawing pad for drawing app/Samsung Notes? Sorry that I asked lots of question. Thank you.
Hey man. The monitor is the LG 27uk850, although it's at least a year old now, there may be a newer model. The phone will charge if it's getting power by usb-c, either with this kind of monitor (which takes a video and audio signal down, and provides power up), or via a dongle which does the same. There are many dongles now which can supply power and break out into an HDMI port. I think it supports fast charging.
Having music playing in the background while your talking is wee bit distracting. I had to pause to check that i didn't have another video playing in another tab.
Android Q has some kind of desktop mode. It's really a feature that should be in all Androids out of the box, not just a Samsung app. A phone is so powerful now it can be a persons only computing device with relative ease, given the right apps. Also, there are portable screens, even ones with batteries in them that would make a phone and a small or even folding keyboard a real laptop-replacement-contender for many.
In the 2020 Big Clash between Huawei and Samsung, a mobile video potential will be one of the major weapons. This includes low noise, 4K 240 fps, 8K 120 fps, shallow DOF, multifocus, accurate color reproduction, optional lenses, AND the editing software. Basically, if Samsung does not develop their own superior video editor, they may follow Apple's marketing position pretty soon.
nothing beats a full desktop gaming experince...yet ! few more years, maybe 6 or 7 phone generations,I and we can play all sorts of games like this where u can have a very strong cpu and gpu on a phone and play steam games on ur smart tv,I wish steam would make their onw smart phone with crazy specs and softweare
Fair point, I've edited the description. That stuff in the right corner is a USB audio recorder for recording guitar, unrelated to the video. I never expected people to notice! :)
@@DavidAddis As someone who works in the tech, I am looking for a one stop solution where my phone can function as my personal computer while I am working remotely ... so that I don't have to carry multiple laptops...
Great video, thanks for sharing sincerely. One thought though, you'll need a bag for that keyboard. The same one you could fit a slim and light laptop. Dex is a great idea without a real world use. It looks like ChromeOS Lite too.
Yep, we literally came from having giant computers that could do hundreds of operations in a second to a small slab of glass and metal capable to basically do almost everything you'll need from a computer and sometimes even more. My father needs computer to check his email, watch some movies/youtube videos, watch photos and play non-taxing games like Solitaire or Heroes of Might and Magic 3. I bought him simple laptop and installed linux mint on it. It doesn't seem that he needs anything else. I think that in just several years into future I would have bought him a Samsung phone (or phone that would have something like DEX on it)
You were slightly ahead of your time with the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X(2)! Have you upgraded to any of S20 models, and if so, have you updated your DeX set-up as a result? Great video! I was wondering if a touch screen monitor would work with DeX... Hmmmmm... Would you know? Cheers!
Hello to you! That future you are thinking about at the end of the video is going to be for real during this 2020 year for some of us, and by the end of 2021 for the rest of the people...

early on some apps would not open up full screen , but as sammy updated , it improved heaps ,
i was using chrome and android , i could watch netflix , you tubes , browse the web , Gmail , talk on the phone while browsing the web , and the little dex station charged and cooled the phone , and was a nice little stand .
i had no interest in games , but for general stuff it worked very well , sometimes i used samsungs browser which imo is actually pretty good and gives you some cool options , and on occasion may also work as a work around for the odd app .
even on my old S8+ i could have quiet a few windows on the screen and it worked very well .
i also loved using my phone during the day , taking photos or video , when i get home , drop the galaxy into the stand , and 20 seconds later it is up and running and all my stuff i acquired during the day was ready to go at a button press ,
and no transferring of stuff to cloud or to your pc , it is already on your phone/dex/pc ready to go , and that is really cool imo .
id still be using dex, except my young brother bought me a pc without asking and i could not tell him to stick it up his jumper given the nice gesture .

Re: software development - See Linux on DeX
I will check it out!
@@arthur...barros is there any problems on running Ubuntu on DeX?
@@arthur...barros i use it was well to develop react.js for my little projects. I wish i could ssh into it.
Nice video! thanks for it!
Samsung is hands down the best phones all around. I can use Dex & mobile for pretty much anything. Thanks for the upload. Keep doing Dex videos friend cause not many of these "Big" phone reviews really anything about Dex!!!!!!
Finally someone that is thinking like me😪
Thanks for making this video. I have a trip coming up and I would prefer not to have to carry a laptop to edit and upload video from an action camera. I will definitely use your advice as I explore the potential. Perhaps new software has become available since you made this video. 👍
Its already here in a way. If every office desk had a USB-C monitor with mouse and keyboard attached
Thanks David for the video. Good to see what's actually possible with Dex. I wonder if Dex is possible on s9 with just Hdmi-usbC cable ( no Dex pad )
*suggestion: next time please try to put a more peaceful background music ;)
Yes it is 👍
Yup, as long as you're on Android Pie, you're good.
video was really useful for me bec i was looking for some answers that i got from your video. Thanks.
You're welcome, Amjay!
I've been using kinemaster on dex for video editing. I'm loving using dex on a large monitor
Good info. Looking to upgrade from my Note 8 and want to use DeX for keeping track of finances. Separate my entertainment PC from my finances.
PC's: *exist*
Samsung: I'm about to end this man's whole career
This made me like Samsung 🤯
MaggieOnline Just have a stack of smartphones sitting beside your monitor to switch from at any time...
Fantastic video. I got all the answers I wanted.
Thanks Mehdi!
How I have DeX note 8 cang seem do it says touchpad or keyboard no smartphone+DeX option on phone
Good Video, very honest opinions. I liked.
Thanks, Lady Dy Super!
I personally even built my own gaming PC which Has the Samsung Dex OS on it, i really like it
The game changer is when DeX mode eventually opens full Windows 10 with full access to all the software available in Windows.
Roll on Windows on Dex!! That would solve a lot of problems.
you can use application called Rush by adobe for video edit.
I did! :)
@@DavidAddis oops.. sorry
In such cases, I think I would be glad to have a 'good enough' for substitute.
depends on your use mate , i did use mine as a full pc for a year and a half , albeit with no super heavy graphic editing requirements , although i did tinker with touching up a photo or two with the android software .
but i loved the utility of having my computer i have on me all day long , and then being able to pop it in a dex station at home and all your stuff is just there on a big screen ready to go .
and you have the many ui features of android on your big screen via a big keyboard , and your device is being charged at the same time . .
thank you for this video. next time, just copy the video from the camera to a seperate drive to access them with no error
I really enjoyed this. Thanks
You're welcome! Thanks for watching 😁👍
Great video !
You get an extra thumbs up for mentioning virtual reality.
Very informative!!!
Thanks!
It's a really good work. I liked it very much. Thank you!
Since you can use the phone like a touch pad in Dex mode, I would expect it to support the stylus too... sorry I haven't tried that myself. 🙂
Having music playing in the background while your talking is wee bit distracting. I had to pause to check that i didn't have another video playing in another tab.
Agreed. It should at the least be turned down slightly so it isn't competing as much with his voice.
Gracias! Muchas gracias 🔥 me fue muy útil tu video
Saludos
Super nice video! thank you im gonna use dex now! :)
Hurrah!
nothing beats a full desktop gaming experince...yet ! few more years, maybe 6 or 7 phone generations,I and we can play all sorts of games like this where u can have a very strong cpu and gpu on a phone and play steam games on ur smart tv,I wish steam would make their onw smart phone with crazy specs and softweare
Samsung is teaming up with steam already and Microsoft working on something epic
Missing equipment list... DEX what is on your desk. Phone stand (besides lamicall) what is in the desk right corner, etc.
Fair point, I've edited the description. That stuff in the right corner is a USB audio recorder for recording guitar, unrelated to the video. I never expected people to notice! :)
Great video! I pressed the subscribe button!
Nice, thanks!
brilliant review! keep it up mate! cheers!
This is going to be my exact editing set up as I finally start creating content 👍
Reviewers often say DEX is a Gimmick, but my word, if this was done by apple, this would be something else
Crapples still in the stone age.
can't wait for android Q to implement the desktop mode.!!
It will be interesting to see Dex with a competitor! Hopefully it will drive both to improve.
@@DavidAddis As someone who works in the tech, I am looking for a one stop solution where my phone can function as my personal computer while I am working remotely ... so that I don't have to carry multiple laptops...
Dex is the most underrated feature of Samsung.
That future you talked about is now here. Samsung Galaxy Fold is a phone, a tablet and a pc with Dex included.
I think that in just several years into future I would have bought him a Samsung phone (or phone that would have something like DEX on it)
Really great content!!
Cheers!
great video, brother.
Hello to you! That future you are thinking about at the end of the video is going to be for real during this 2020 year for some of us, and by the end of 2021 for the rest of the people...
visual studio on dex through samsung's 'linux on dex' is currently possible (albeit in beta)
This feature is great and it can replace laptops for general uses but for editing it's still better to use more powerful laptops or desktop.
Good info mate. Thanks

Its free. Its powerful. You can do whatever you want with it.
