ALWAYS remove the fill plug before removing the drain plug. If you can’t get the full plug loose after removing the drain plug you can’t replace the oil

2019 Chieftain dark Horse - on refill, put in 4.5qts, run for 30 seconds, add additional 1.5 qts, then run for 3-4 min varying rpms around 2k to 2300. Stop engine, wait 30 seconds, check dipstick with bike upright (make sure its fully seated). You should be above "add" by about 15-20%, which is where you want to be. Bike has to be at operating temp to get a good read. 😊

Thanks for the info. With no oil tank that oil expands. And wasn't sure about the last half qt. Or another qt. Now another qt and one half 😳. Harley for 40yrs to injun much different

I would love to hear from anyone who has done a Vintage on its' side stand. I'm trying to do a change, but there is not enough clearance to put a pan under it or get the socket wrench in there ad it leans too far over. Anyone done this?

I've done this to my 19 vintage put in exactly 5 and 1/2 quarts and new oil filter and didn't go anywhere near that on the dipstick why

So if you have the Oil Cooler on these two models how many extra ounces of oil does the OIL COOLER take to fill plus the 5.5 quarts basic oil change????

I have a 2017 Vintage with the Thunderstroke 111. I have put 50,000 miles on it, changing my oil every 5,000 miles. I do have the oil cooler.
In my experience (10 oil changes so far) it takes me 5 3/4 quarts to get my oil to show in the acceptable range on the dipstick.

@@davegrigsby7807 Between your answer and looking at other information I was assuming 6 - 8 oz depending on the number of rows. So I agree with your answer 100% of adding the additional oil. Indian engineers were telling me not to worry and just stay with 5.5 guarts overall - which I think is Bullocks. The reason being is if you have 5.5 quarts lubricating the internal parts of the engine ( without the oil cooler ) your okay. However if you have the Oil Cooler then that Oil (Flowing or in the Cooler) is not in the engine - so the whole thing of having a cooler is MOOT. But adding like I think and Dave thinks the additional 8 ounces of oil is the correct way. Thank You Dave

Thanks but one issue the Indian vintage does not have an RPM gage only a MPH gage! 😳

You can cycle through the gauge options with the black switch on the left handle. You should have 8 options, from temperature to mileage. One of these is the RPM.
