I hate that stuff like roller coasters stopping on the lift hill makes the news more than any given car crash. Car crashes are so much more common and, quite obviously, more deadly by a long shot.

    • @VestedUTuber
      @VestedUTuber 4 года назад +32

Dog bites man: no one cares. Man bites dog: makes headlines. The news would rather cover coasters seemingly functioning in a normal but somewhat unexpected manner than most car crashes because it's rarer and thus "more interesting" to audiences. You're also less likely to see rides that are known to have high downtime, such as Top Thrill Dragster and Lightning Rod, covered by news media when they "break down" because it happens often enough to cease being "man bites dog".

I remember being stuck once in a ride, but it wasn't a rollecoaster. It was a swinging ship. The entire ride went well until it was time for the brakes to kick in.I remember hearing them twice, along with that feeling of something "scrapping" the base of the ship, and then go completely silent. The operator (bless him) remained calm and actually made a joke about giving us a small freebie for extra time on the ride.
We had to wait for the momentum to die and the ride to stop on its own. Must admit, quite an interesting experience, and props to the operator for keeping everyone in high spirits.

The only time I've ever been stopped wasn't on a roller coaster, but it was on one of the Harry Potter rides at universal Orlando. It was the big one, in the castle, and while it was a little disappointing to have the ride stopped, it was also really cool to get a chance to see how it worked (there were these big mechanical arm things that lifted the seats up and down, to make it feel like you were floating, and we could see them much better with the emergency lights on). We were stopped twice, and only for a couple minutes each time, but I still think it was one of the coolest experiences I've had.

I was waiting in line for Rip Ride Break Run at Universal, and i saw a couple of trains about to go onto a brake run, but then when they hit the brake runs, they totally stopped. The ride wasn’t broken down or anything, and the coaster was dispatching trains perfectly fine, so I was just like, “what’s going on?”

    • @VestedUTuber
      @VestedUTuber 4 года назад

That's what's called stacking. You see it somewhat often on rides that run more than two trains, and it's the result of a combination of slower-than-expected dispatches and the block system working normally. B&M hypercoasters are infamous for this kind of thing.

Like I said previously, stacking can happen quite often on rides with more than two trains. It doesn't take a lot to cause it either, just a few slightly slow dispatches in a row can cause the ride's dispatch timing to be thrown off. And since Rip Roarin' Rocket has so many trains, I'm surprised it doesn't stack more often.

We were there for almost an hour, and a ride technician came to work on some kind of control box right next to me and we had a chat for some time. While I've never stopped a ride myself I have seen co-workers do it. And yes, usually a cellphone. We had a few other stoppages that weren't done on purpose. Those were always interesting. My ride if a train stopped you had to pull a button on the control panel to get it moving again once the next block was clear. If you forgot to move the train out of the safeties after stacking the next train would stop on the mid-course. Not a huge problem but embarrassing for sure. When it happened a loud bell would ring just so everyone in the station could know you fucked up too.

I've only been on one roller coaster when it stopped on the lift hill. I was eight years old and really freaked out. The older people near me kept saying stuff that freaked me out even worse. Thankfully, I grew up and eventually worked on that same ride. I learned that none of the things that they said could've happened.
As a ride operator, I've only been at one ride when the train got stopped on the lift hill, which was good, because the other train was stuck in the breaks. The biggest issue we had with getting people safely through the ride (we would much rather you finish out the ride than be evacuated) was the parents of the kids stopped on the lift hill yelling at us that their kids needed to be taken off the ride right then.
The ride was only acting up because of heavy rain. Since the first train wasn't leaving the brakes, the ride was doing what it was supposed to by stopping the second train on the lift.
    The misinformation needs to stop!

In Legoland in Billund here in Denmark I have been on the Dragon ride so many times throughout my childhood and in the bussiest part of the season it would always go with 2 trains. 1 in each half of the ride. The first half you're going through an indoor exhibition of all sorts of things made of lego. While you would go through this exhibition part, the other train would go through the roller coaster half of the ride and return to unload and load a new group of passengers. You would never be sent on the second half of the ride before the other train had left the station. So if there were any sort of problems, delays or anything the train you were in would be halted on the tracks and once the other dragon train left the station you'd be send off to the outdoor roller coaster part of the ride. So when you set off to the second half, you could always see the tail of the other dragon leaving through the big doors to the exhibit. How long you got to hang around, if any at all, always depended on how quickly the dragon being loaded with new passengers was ready to go and how smoothly everything went.
Looking up accidents in Legoland and any other associated parks with a quick serach I can find information of very few major accidents. 1 in Denmark in 2007 where an employee entered a restricted area while a roller coaster was running, she got hit and died. And another from an associated park in Britain. I don't feel like they've ever been shy of closing down anything for inspection, repairs etc. if there was anything causing the slightest bit of concern. So I've always felt safe on all of their rides. 😄
In 2013 they closed the Dragon down a couple months before the end of the season due to the need of extensive maintenance, it had been running for 16 years at that point.

I’m glad you make videos like these. Whenever I get scared to go on a roller coaster I can always just remember to myself that more people have died by falling into a bathtub than they have on a roller coaster.

I’ve been stuck on a roller coaster twice too. I got stuck on the third lift hill on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad when I was 9, and we ended up being evacuated after being stuck there for 10 minutes. The second time was at Thunderhead on the very first run of the day, but I was only stuck for a couple minutes that time.

I only found your Channel about 2 weeks ago and I've watched like most of your videos already. I just wanted to say I really appreciate you saying that it wasn't an accident it was the roller coaster working as intended because a lot of people want to be negative about things like this when it should be a positive event. The creators of the ride and the park did exactly what they needed to do and so it was working as intended. So anyway just wanted to thank you again for putting this out there I wish it could go further I'm going to share on my social media

I got stuck on volcano: the blast coaster. It couldn’t get enough momentum to make it out of the volcano and we slid back down into the tunnel. They brought planks to help us off and gave us free ride passes to come back later and skip the line. It was honestly a lot of fun to sail back down the first hill backwards.

Thanks for the info I always wondered what that clicking sound was. I went to Hershey Park in 2005 and I have to say it was pretty fun. I don’t remember all the rides I went on but I remember doing wild mouse and wildcat. One of the rides was closed the day I went. All I remember about it is that the track was red.

Saw the "new" steel phantom in there... nice. I was a big fan of the old one myself. Rode that sucker 25 times in a row when me and a buddy bout had the park to ourselves. The operators just let us stay seated all but a few times. Kentwood was legit like that. Might explain my neck issues later in life, lol! That sucker was a rough ride but in a good way, in my opinion.

As a guy who works in aviation, this, instead of an accident, would be called an incident.
Malfunctions in avaiation happen daily, daily incidents get registered by the thousands every day world wide, usually a bad reading on instruments or something related, emergency procedures get followed and everything ends up just fine and maybe, if you are a passenger in one of these aircrafts, you never knew something even happened.
Media just doesn't help by making people paranoid.

I remember getting my sister to go on a spinning coaster for the first time and I said something like: "good luck surviving" or something as the train left the station, I had to wait a train with my dad because of seating, but... the train my sister was on stopped on the lifthil and needed to be evac'd... so that was my sister's experience with her now favorite ride.
Seriously she loves it, it used to be my favorite too but they added a B&M wing coaster in 2018, which became my favorite from the first ride I had, til the last one last year... now the park is closed due to a certain virus.

I got stopped on a Disney ride (something with Finding Nemo - Crush's Coaster) which was indoors. It was strange to debark that one. They had to turn on the lights and we exited a walk way and down some stairs. It was neat to see the layout of the ride which would normally be hidden by the darkness.

The only coaster I got "stuck on"(longer than a few minutes that was not as precautionary measure) was that goddamn Superman ride at SF over Georgia. We were not upside down per se, but stuck in that chest towards the ground, arms, legs and face/head dangling due to gravity. Over 95 degree heat and 2 hours, many were treated by on-site medics, I hurt for days due to the strain of trying to keep my head held up and the blood flow to peoples arm's was becoming a problem because the seats were actually pressing against the brachial artery if you just let your arms dangle.
We called it a day after that and just drank beers 🤣

At knobles in Pennsylvania the opening year of the impulse, the chain lift actually malfunctioned and just stopped. The people were perfectly fine and were just stuck on the hill for two hours. They didn’t roll back or have any harm come to them, just were stuck for awhile. That is the “worst” accident I’ve ever seen or heard of at knobles.

I'm not scared of rollercoasters because "OH MY GOD ITS GONNA BREAK AND I'M GONNA DIE" I'm scared of rollercoasters because it's way too much for me to handle. I got on a SeaWorld Electric Feel with my dad and it scared the hell out of me because of how fast it was. Not because I was scared it was going to break. That thought never even occurred to me.

One time me and my friend got stuck on wicked twister, it was slowing down and near the end of the ride, and it stopped right before going into the station. We weren't stopped for long, maybe like 10-15 minutes, they told us to stay calm and it eventually just rolled back into the station and it continued to run as normal.

I was on Sheikra several times before growing up. Busch Gardens is an amazing Park. The only time I ever got stuck there was at the very end Of the ride. We were like 40 ft away from the exit platform. We were stuck there for I believe are there 45 minutes to an hour. It would have been fine, but it was a cold day and in the front seats. But we did get to see the people at the nearby basketball game do stuff. And we could hear it pretty well as well. Eventually, they had to make a makeshift platform for us to get off. I'd say this was about 2012 or 2013 when this happened.
I still ride Sheikra often. Same with all the rides at Busch Gardens. Including their historic original trains from the Civil War era converted to run on propane.

Hey so I have a question. My parents were on one of the tallest roller coasters in the park when it stopped in the lift hill about 1/4 of the way up. Instead of anyone getting off the ride or anyone coming up to get a phone, they were just stopped for about 20 minutes before the ride resumed. So why was it stopped?
I hope this is accurate enough, I was eating fries somewhere and didn’t see this happening and my parents have a habit of exaggerating things. Anyways thanks in advance and I love your videos

I got stuck on a rollercoaster once, although it was actually a malfunction. Power to that whole ride was lost, while the rest of the park remained intact. Our car stopped just before the station, we had stopped naturally as we were supposed to, and were supposed to be carried into the station but power went out. Another car was on the track, and smoothly stopped behind us without any issues. About 20 minutes later power was back, and we were taken into the station and let off.

I’ve been on 2 coaster stoppages in my life. Millineum Force because someone lost their hat and Thunderhead at the breaks at the end and I don’t know why that happened probably someone taking out a phone on the lift hill and since they couln’t push out the newly loaded trains so we were sitting for 15 minutes.
