    My die-on-the-hill belief is that good fashion was already figured out in the 40s-60s, and everything after that is driven primarily by consumerist desire to constantly churn out more products and convince buyers that they have to wear something different from the generation prior out of a completely irrational fear of looking "old fashioned". This is to say nothing of the globalisation and advancement of production pipelines that have driven fashion towards cheaper lower quality clothes, best exemplified by brands like Shein and Temu. All this to say - Japan is producing some of the best menswear right now because they going in entirely the opposite direction to this. Timeless products, good fabrics, and skilled construction done by well paid artisans.

      It’s hard to disagree with you! I notice as well that a lot of people including myself go through an experimental fashion phase but often resort back to the timeless basics!

    The 90s definitely inspired me also. From streetwear to runway, brands at that time focused more on designs than where to place their logos. Also people were more individualistic in the 90s unlike now everyone wants to look like the same person who has a Botox & fillers face or steroid body. 😢

    I've recently opened a new pinterest account, and dedicated maybe an hour or so to making boards and saving some pins, and after adding to it over a couple days it has become a really reliable source of inspiration for me because I've tailored it to my interests. It's so satisfying!

    I have thin legs, no matter how hard I do leg days on gym, that is why I stay away from skinny fit jeans and chinos, though the closest thing I can tolerate are slim straight/slim fit types

    Smth for a Q&A if you ever do one in the foreseeable future: How do you adjust/reconcile the interesting styles you may see and want to copy with your personality? I can for sure appreciate style when I see it, I may be drawn to try it, however, my inner self and how I project myself aren’t in tune with the aesthetic of said style. Quite annoying, even if you’re willing to stretch your personality.

    Great ideas as always. If you haven't already, I find a lot of inspiration in poetic realism, a sort of French proto-noir from the 30s and 40s. Lots of cool silhouettes. Films by Duvivier sometimes remind me of Demeulemeester. More recently, I think you'd find a lot to draw from with Maurice Pialat. His are mostly 70s and 80s, but on location with characters who are a bit rough around the edges. Jacques Rivette and Hao Hsiao-hsien work well too.

    Two things I wanted to comment on, one as I love your videos so keep making them. Particularly ones like this, that are able to show some range versus the current trends, especially Maximalism. My second question is just how big is your wardrobe? Whenever we watch influencers talking about fashion, and those such as yourself actually wear and buy the pieces that they’re talking about, it makes me wonder how big your closet is

    • @JamesLeung
      @JamesLeung  3 месяца назад

      Thank you for the kind words! Honestly my closet is too big, I’m on a mission at the moment to trim it down as much as possible to the pieces I actually wear, which is probably like 15-20 pieces.

    Have you considered Maverick's jacket in Top Gun? One time I caught someone wearing that in Madrid in the winter. Miss the days before the internet went mainstream, where one could look at printed store magazine catalogs which were easiler on the eyes than looking at the computer/tablet screen. When I was younger in Taiwan and before the internet, I rolled my eyes when someone on the street wore something avante-garde and being told that it's the latest fashion in Japan.

    wanting to be edgy without being loud and obnoxious is a bit antithetical to me. also cant stand how the general zeitgeist (not saying you think this neccesarily) is so vehemently against anything boisterous. You gotta just commit to the bit. full force if you will.
