100% agree with all of these. I made the mistake of buying loud pieces so many times before I finally stopped buying them a couple years ago and have never looked back. Also 260 quid for some socks is bloody ridiculous.
I used to do the same, and now I have a wardrobe full of pieces I don’t want to wear because they don’t go with anything! I’m slowly trying to sell them but it’s difficult. Thanks for watching!
Well thought through. I’m quite old, I sometimes knit my own socks. Great yarn is about £16 for a pair, plus about 20 hours work. They last years. However for every day you cant beat bamboo mix yarn socks. They don’t shrink like cotton and deal well with all the problems that come with feet. TKMax 8 quid for 3. Excellent. I enjoy you channel, now I’m older I prefer clothes without labels or logos so Muji and Uniqlo work fine. Happy days.

Interesting video and the principles are solid. Extra considerations for me are: 1. Where it is made (e.g. USA vs China), 2. How it is made (e.g. sweatshop vs ethically made) and 3. The quality relative to price (which you covered to a degree). There's nothing wrong with things made in China or India, as long as I know that the workers are being paid fairly and treated well, and I don't get this reassurance from mainstream mall brands. You're 100% right about socks and t-shirts, and it's crazy to invest too much in them. I will spend $1k on a jacket that will last decades, or $500 on handcrafted, high-quality boots/shoes that can be resoled. I'll pay $15-20 max for socks and underwear because I can find quality brands that tick all my boxes.
Absolutely agree with you man! Like you said it can be difficult to determine which brands are doing the right thing. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear even some brands charging hundreds for a t-shirt that still have bad working conditions. i do enjoy the cashmere sweats I got as they are softer and dry quicker than cotton but it''s a rare purchase. For checked shirts I would go with wythe on sale. They aren't as expensive like designer but they have better colour selection and fabrics than uniqlo. For the bomber jackets I had uniqlo then got an engineered garments. There is a difference in nylon feel but I ended up preferring natural materials and sold it.

I disagree with loungewear, in the colder months I live in hoodies and sweatpants, so makes sense to get something higher quality with a nicer fit.

Dont do it) ... & I say that after being into 'classic menswear' for a while, & having tailors make things for me custom, so its not like I've haven't tried 'good suits'. Reason I say this is a) suits are rapidly being phased out of almost all parts of life, even in business they are often reserved for client meetings only, even in quite conservative areas like banking. apart from this they are pretty much only worn at weddings & funerals. b) they are not practical, esp. in modern day life, with central heating on inside they often wear hot unless you go for very light wools or linens which are then too cold in the winter which means you need multiple suits to get around the problem c) they are irrelevant of quality going to be constricting, and therefore never as comfortable d) they are delicate, so you need to baby the garments, say you want to sit on a park bench, or you want to eat that messy burger, you are from time to time going to get dirt and grime on them which leads me to the final point e) they are expensive to maintain with dry cleaning, & periodic trips to a tailor for adjustments as your waist gets bigger or smaller & due to the nature of a suit it has little ability to accommodate that changing size! Hope that helps, Ive just saved you a lot of money!
Only remark I would make is on topic of check shirt. Check pattern is most demanding to cut and sew in order to have a perfectly aligned stripes both horizontally and vertically all over garment. The cheaper ones are misaligned and expert eye can tell the difference. I agree there is a certain price point above which quality ain't going to be better and also that price of garment is not a guarantee of the quality. But be aware of misaligned checks because it's a tell tale sign that you ain't in the know when it comes to fashion 😊.

Gotta confess the best bomber jacket I've got is a MA2 from Schott. Under £130 but the fit for me is spot on as is the design. You're absolutely right about the socks, t-shirts and Lounge wear.

Great vid, to me its all about material. If its a suede bomber or merino wool socks im more than happy to spend more if i plan to make an investment but stuff like nylon can only get so good.

Only one I have to disagree on is bomber jackets. There isn't a lot of levels to them, but there are definitely some premium bombers that feel like they are worth the money in hand. I have a Sacai bomber that looks and feels so much nicer than something I could get for $100. That said, I almost never pay full price for this stuff. Buying new is usually the mistake imo, unless you are buying heavily on sale. Preowned luxury/premium items are a great compromise, since many of the more premium brands are made to last a lot longer and generally people take pretty good care of them.
Fair point 👍 I think there are a lot of brands out there where the higher price is justified due to better quality materials etc. but there’s also a lot where they just seem to be priced high for the sake of it!

@@JamesLeung absolutely! Luxury as a blanket term means different things to different people, and for some people it’s just the prestige that comes with a brand. Definitely not my focus and I generally think that section of luxury can be pretty corny.
Also I hate to be a pedant but I looked into it and there are 100% different categories and qualities of satin. Satin is just a type of long fiber weave, you can make it out of a lot of different materials. There is silk satin and cotton sateen, polysatin, lots of stuff. So when it comes to bombers, there is going to be a huge different in quality of textiles from a Uniqlo or H&M bomber vs something a little more expensive. That being said, it’s not always going to be super apparent so it’s going to mostly be up to the consumer to tell the difference.

Yeah I should have clarified a bit more sorry. But really I think the mid range stuff is still good value. In fact that’s kind of where I land with most of my stuff. Nylon does have different qualities. The first nylon thigh highs were so resistant the manufacturers had to use lesser quality nylon in order to have a constant demand. Nowadays you can still see differences in nylon quality : prada owns the factory that makes the best nylon in the world, and I can assure you that prada nylon is better than nylon that you would see on nike shorts.

rich people buy designer socks or fashion kiddies who buy the kapital ones and go into debt for them lol.
loungewear for me is personally old clothes I dont enjoy anymore or I thrifted that were too big/bought for lounging. working at Patagonia helps too tho for good loungewear.
plain tshirts are a miss for me, loopwheel/tubular shirts feel nd fit nice and have lasted me a long time with no stretch. Tezomeya is my go too and I enjoy the ethos and how they dye some shirts which I bought as well as the plain ones. Warehouse and co has really good shirts too. plain shirts are good to invest in because you can get a lot of wear out of them and dress them up or down.
loud pieces sure, in the sense that you might wear once or twice, at least for a non rich person, probably not the best idea.
agree on the flannels, second hand good. no more than 250 usd, anything more then youre paying for brand name.

I recently went through my wardrobe and applied a couple of rules. One was no logos, I got rid of everything with the logo, narrowed my graphic tees down to four, even got rid of logoed baseball caps. The last thing to go is a Brooks Brothers polo which I’m going to replace some thing without a logo. Also completely agree about socks underwear and T’s. I will admit that I spent 200 on a flannel shirt, but it’s pink and beige and I was specifically looking for that color set so I snapped it up. That said, I will probably out for the rest of my life

I think there’s a difference in quality in hats, cotton hats anyway, I have a Lacoste one and a Ralph Lauren one, the cotton in both feels absolutely incredible and soft, tho for me RL edges it. But I suppose this video isn’t really covering that, just wanted to give my two cents lol
My thing is, one or two brands you love, pick it up during one of the annual sales where you get everything for 50% off, happy days.

I have to disagree with your point regarding check/plaid shirts. Flannels will always be a timeless piece used for either casual wear or for work. Because of this, a flannel is something you can wear very regularly and get your money's worth. I've bought plenty of vintage pendletons and woolrich shirts over the years (which I've loved), but I stopped wearing all of these once I bought a couple Iron Heart button snap flannels a couple years ago. Yes, the $360 price point for an IH flannel is a good example of point of diminishing returns, but speaking as someone who has been a flannel enthusiast for most of my life I can confidently say that that the IH flannel is the absolute best on the market these days and in my opinion they are justified in setting their price at $360. The fit is perfect, the double brush interior is extremely comfortable, the colorways are really beautiful, the button snaps (as small of a detail as they may be) are the best I've ever felt, and the weight of it is not too much and not too little. On top of this, there is absolutely zero corners cut during the construction of the shirts and it really shows in their QC. A similar analogy to this would be the prices of Gibson guitars. Yes, they are considerably more expensive, but everybody knows that when you buy a Gibson Custom Shop you are going to get an incredible guitar that is very much distinct from the sound and appearance of a Fender. If Gibson knows that they make some of the best, most iconic guitars in the world, they are justified in setting the prices they want. All this stuff doesn't really apply if you reasonably cannot afford an expensive flannel, and that's completely fine. However, to say that its not worth spending $300+ on a flannel despite the flannel ACTUALLY being a really well made piece of clothing that is of distinctly higher objective quality and will be worn very regularly (due to its timeless appearance) is not really a complete argument in my opinion. Not everybody who wears flannels is actively trying to look like a blue collar worker or fit into the category of workwear. Believing that is similar to saying that you just shouldn't buy selvedge denim because its more expensive than mass produced projectile loom denim and denim is just "workwear" anyways. Flannels and denim have been a timeless staple of american fashion for many decades. Some people just want to casually wear jeans and a flannel and enjoy the experience of wearing pieces that are of undeniably higher objective quality
Very interesting and valid points. It sounds like you’re a true enthusiast when it comes to flannels and so they’re totally worth it for you. I’m the same with certain pieces, and despite the topic of my video I do actually believe in quality of quantity. But from a general buyers perspective I think mid range pieces often present the best value in terms of quality vs price. Every now and then it’s nice to splurge on a really good piece but as long as it’s justified from on quality and not just down to the name on the label (which I’m worried a lot of people fall for).

I just bought a shirt from Bode recently and was very disappointed the quality didn’t meet expectations. However when it comes to socks I spend money on them due to athletes foot and old military habits. I don’t care for unique designs, but a hard wearing wool blend in my opinion is worth the money and they will last forever.
Yeah I agree hardwearing socks are worth the money! Unfortunately expensive designer ones are often pretty standard quality
I'd also say, if you're not paying for it, someone else is (close to slave labour, sweatshop etc.) but paying for traceable and well made items is worth the money, even for t-shirts

I feel you are a little bit lowballing on the socks (up to 20€ seems acceptable to me to get some Italian made silk or merino wool socks ) ,on T-shirts ( between a 15€ Uniqlo tee and a 65€ Japanese loopwheeled tee , there is a world of difference) and on caps ( between a new era at 30€ and a stone island at 90€ on sale , the quality is quite different too , but I admit 90€ is overpriced ). On the loud pieces , a suit is exactly what you shouldn’t invest in : this is the perfect way to look like a clown .

Gotta disagree on the plaid shirts. Once you leave the fashion brands and shop ACTUAL heritage/workwear brands, you do get what you pay for with less diminishing returns. Triple stitching where it counts, top quality fabrics, more attention to detail and cleaner construction. I've tried on a $300 plaid shirt, and it really does show up where it matters
I can understand your point of view. For myself I’d prefer to go vintage or mid-range, anything over the 100-150 range feels like diminishing returns for me!

I don't think it is right to cheap out that much - supporting some of the brands mentionned means you are endorsing bad labour conditions, unsustainable production, and import from 3rd world countries.
Yeah I know what you’re saying. There’s definitely a balance. I wouldn’t go the very cheapest route but I also think there’s diminishing returns at a certain point in both quality and maybe even working conditions where more expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better.

- strength
- drapery

man, I do spend £25 on RoToTo waffle socks, last up to three years and look great, just the dye quality alone, anyone who buys moncler socks need fleeced though. Spending more money on tees becomes a human rights issue. £50 is a better price point for morality/quality.
Yeah I hear you, I’d spend up to £70 on a tee I think but it would have to be really good. Anything over that doesn’t make sense, especially in the £100s
For the way I dress, I’d say every piece of clothing shouldn’t be more expensive than typical arket/cos pricing. I dress very minimal so brands aren’t something I value too much. And quality wise, at some point it’s just not worth it. I own several pieces from arket, Uniqlo and even Zara that are still going strong after 5-6 years. Of course I’d love to own some ralph Lauren knitwear but it’s just to damn expensive for what it is. And the maintenance of the more expensive clothing and materials is something else to consider. I’m not really into washing by hand so I’ll pass on cashmere for this reason alone
Yes this is pretty much exactly my thoughts as well! You can get some super quality stuff nowadays for very fair prices. I wouldn’t go really cheap but also wouldn’t go really expensive. Somewhere in the middle is best 👍
Agreed. I used to be into Ralph Laruen pretty heavy when I was in my 20s. A lot of times I would try to find stuff second hand or at an outlet store. To this day, trying to get it brand new definitely isn't worth it. I'd rather just get LL Bean or even just Uniqlo (as far as knitwear goes).
