White evangelicals, Trump, and a church in crisis

  • When Tim Alberta, son of a born-again Christian pastor, was growing up, the church was a sanctuary from the world of politics. Today, as a journalist, he reports on how in recent decades political ideologies have divided the church, with white evangelicals becoming embroiled by politics and their support of Donald Trump. CBS News chief election and campaign correspondent Robert Costa talks with Alberta, author of the new book, "The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory: American Evangelicals in an Age of Extremism," who says the white evangelical church is in crisis, which coincided with the election of Donald Trump.

I've been saying that for years, starting with the fact that they brought prayer into the government with prayer breakfast and Billy Graham. That was a republican thing the Democrats have never tried to shove religion into government or down America's throat.
The very foundations of this nation are a national religion shall not be established or endorsed by government and allow every religion to flourish privately and do no harm to others.
Take away their tax-exempt status I don't think any church should be so rich that their pastor has two private jets and a mansion. That's not religion. it's power, politics, and greed. 💙VOTE BLUE 💙

Even saw a situation at another school with parents fighting and nearly all spectators rushing the court after slurs were thrown around. The crazy part is that the game wasn't canceled. They calmed everyone down, told everyone to stay on their side of the court, and continued the game. Must have been a common occurrence there since they apparently had a system in place for this sort of thing.

1st your John Adams quote is taken out of context as most historians do today which changes the historical reference. Keep in mind, when historians and politicians say this country is not a Christian country and the founders were secular. Keep in mind The constitution was based on John Locke's Enlightenment philosophies and books of the Bible. If you cross check the Bill of Rights for example the 1st amendment was based from the book of Jerimiah word for word. The 2nd amendment was based from Isaiah. The declaration of independence if you read the grievance's they are titles of sermons given from 1760 to 1768. The very first congressional meeting was a bible study based on the Thirty Fifth Psalm and it is a matter of historical record. John Adams said in a letter to his wife Abigail, that the passage was so important that she should read it and share with her friends. Yes, the first motion in our 1st congress was to read Psalm 35 and it passed unanimously. That day turned into a bible study that lasted the day. The bible study was so successful that the second motion that passed was to open congress with a prayer. To say our country was not founded on Christianity is plain wrong. Historians and politicians need to put these quotes into their proper context but historians don't want to do that because it destroys their narrative.

You will not find that anywhere in the U.S. Constitution. Most of America's founding fathers were Christians, and were very political. Congress also approved of the Holy Bible to be taught in schools in the late 1780s, and it remained that way until the early 1960s, when the atheists got their way and had it removed from the public schools. Now, America's children are being taught the religion of evolution, which has turned them into animals.

If you favor gerrymandering Black American voters, criminalizing the teaching of Black American history, police brutality against law-abiding Black citizens, and preventing Black citizens from filing racial discrimination lawsuits against companies that violated their civil rights, then you are obviously not accepting of everyone, and that unfortunately is the commonplace temperament that is often expressed by members of the Conservative White American Christian Sector.

*- John Adams* (American statesman, attorney, diplomat, writer, Founding Father & 2nd president)
The *1st Amendment's Establishment Clause* prohibits the government from making any law, _“respecting an establishment of religion.”_
This clause not only forbids the government from establishing an official religion, but also prohibits government actions that unduly favor one religion over another. It also prohibits the government from unduly preferring religion over non-religion.

This means nobody is ever required to swear on the Bible, or any other religious book for an oath of office. They may choose a religious book, but none is required.

_"The Treaty of Tripoli was passed by the Senate and signed into law by President John Adams. As such, it is a "legislated text" which must be read "textually". _*_The lower courts in this case read a hypothetical legislative intention into the text by dismissing Article 11 as "a mere formality". The language itself makes a clear direct statement that our government is not based on the Christian religion_*_ and any attempt by a government official to represent our government as Christian contradicts the text and the historical understanding of our founders."_

_"The way to see by Faith is to shut the Eye of Reason."_
      *-Benjamin Franklin* (Poor Richard's Almanac)

As an atheist that’s lived in the Bible Belt my entire life, surrounded by delusional, judgmental conservatives seeing this man and others like him gives me a bit of hope. I tend to generalize all evangelicals as zealots, especially post Trump presidency, it’s good to see they’re not all extremist sheeple.

    • @thegoodfight426
      @thegoodfight426 10 месяцев назад

Zealousness is good, but when it lacks knowledge, it is tyrannical! Christians are truly the most despised people on the planet and many are looking for a savior in flesh and blood because it gives them comfort. However, our comfort is not to come from what is seen, but what is unseen.
Those who seek truth by way of the Holy Spirit see past the rederick of all these political leaders and can see that it is all smoke and mirrors. The demise of this country has been calculated and formulated over decades, and these talking heads are all in it together!
Those who say they follow Christ may have left a bad taste in your mouth, (I understand, I too, grew up in the Bible belt and didn't find the truth until I got out in the wilderness, so to speak), but don't allow the misunderstanding of some to influence you to rule out the possibility of Jesus actually being the truth, life, and way!
Those who truly follow Him and understand His teachings are few and far between, but you can be one of them! It is definitely a straight and narrow road that few be upon, but when you know that you have the King of the Universe on your side, you'll know you are never alone!!! ❤

      @girlart9 10 месяцев назад +14

Yes, there is hope. As a born again Christian who has plenty of questions, I am not a zealot. Nor am I a sheeple. I simply believe the Ten Commandments. No matter where you go in this world the basic tenants of the Commandments hold strong. And I believe Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life. History proves He walked this earth, he was crucified, and all of His disciples died rather than deny Him. One need not be a zealot to believe that.
Don’t you realize there will always be zealots in every shape and size (radical Islamic terrorists), sheeple (like the woke crowd needing to be coddled), judgmental atheists (thinking there is no god but cannot prove it), Satan worshippers, and everyone of them thinks they are right. Grew up in an evangelical household, I would classify myself as a Christian but not an evangelical. Stunning how so many adore political behavior contrary to the Bible. What is even more sad is that evangelicals would support someone who bullies and mocks them behind closed doors, rapes and abuses women, adores hate and not the Fruits of the Spirit, and even calls military veterans (like my father and grandfather) who served others losers and suckers when Jesus talks about laying down our life for one another. There have been days where I have been tempted to walk away from family members who are evangelicals because of evangelicals adoration of Trump and power, and I have lost many friends because of it. Churches are treating young adults and combining politics in such a disgusting manner, and it will cost them forever.

The scripture does show it matters. Psalm 33 says; blessed be the people who god is the lord. Scripture also says that, when the wicked rule the righteous grieve. The New Testament tells us to pray for our leaders and to follow their laws. It stands to reason that in a democratic republic, we have a responsibility to be aware of who we cast our votes for and support so that we do not find ourselves in an Acts 5 situation where Peter said; “we will follow gods law not man’s.” Or even a Daniel situation where we are even symbolically thrown in the lions den for not bowing before the king.

@@Badfilms-u6j the Bible also talks about seasoning your conversation with grace, not letting coarse or foolish conversation come from your mouth but only that which is edifying. Jesus stresses two things that a believer must do -- love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. If what we hear coming out of Evangelical circles is loving yourselves (which you need to be able do before you love other people), then that's a weird kind of love. Just sounds like a section of the American church has huge insecurity and self-esteem problems or are power-hungry, which is antithetical to the gospel. If it's self-esteem issues that the Evangelical church has then you can't give what you don't walk in yourself. If it's political power, then how does that align with the Beatitudes or the fruit of the Spirit?

I just stopped going because even though my Pastor is a great guy who stays away from politics I just felt so unwelcome. Most churches subscribe to the idea that only the Republicans are God sent little angels and the rest are evil who only want destruction for our country.

I am a Never Trumper and voting for President Biden to help keep DT and his enablers out of the White House. The GOP is RIP!!
Many who call themselves "evangelical" have allowed themselves to be deceived and are promoting an antichrist DT (one who opposes in character and deed everything my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ represents and has ever taught).
Just like a person can call themselves an evangelical christian you can also call yourself a cheeseburger but that does not mean it is true!

It does not mean that the values found within the Bible should be ignored when choosing who shall rule over a nation. I genuinely don’t understand thinking that Christians shouldn’t have any type of say or influence in who rules over them. The Bible says when the wicked rule the righteous grieve. If we are given the freedom and right to vote, it stands to reason we should vote and support people who align with our beliefs. Not trying to argue or come off as disrespectful. This belief that Christian’s shouldn’t influence who rules over them is just something that baffles me.

      *-Benjamin Franklin* (Poor Richard's Almanac)
_“The study of theology, as it stands in Christian churches, is the study of nothing; it is founded on nothing; it rests on no principles; it proceeds by no authorities; it has no data; it can demonstrate nothing; and it admits of no conclusion....and as this is the case with Christian theology, it is therefore the study of nothing.”_

Thank you Tim for speaking out. My born again evangelical faith has nothing to do with what DT or is enablers say or do. It is based upon what my Lord & Savior Jesus Christ has already done for me and is continuing to do.
God knows the heart of a person and will judge all accordingly. No one is getting away with anything including DT and all his enablers. So, repent of your sins and place your trust in Jesus Christ before it is too late.

It is one of the most (if not THE most important) doctrine of belief that separates one denomination from another amongst Protestants. And to the poster's opinion if one believes in predestination they absolutely may have a different attitude towards sin and forgiveness than someone who believes they can lose their salvation. Enough with the overused "woke" and read some of the books instead of burning them. When I went to seminary we had to read hundreds and hundreds of other books besides the Bible alone and you can't walk into, or through, a Christian bookstore without tripping over displays of other books that "teach." So learn on your own besides drinking the Kool-Aid of the guy in the pulpit or on the TV screen..."Wake", if you will.

_“The United States is not a Christian nation any more than it is a Jewish or Mohammedan Nation.”_
*Constitution Article VI Supreme Law - Clause 3 Oaths of Office*
_"The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; _*_but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."_*
This means nobody is ever required to swear on the Bible, or any other religious book for an oath of office. They may choose a religious book, but none is required.
_“...the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion."_

....only a few times in history the Senate unanimously agreed on anything.
A 2018 Supreme Court Ruling re-affirmed this statement, from The Treaty of Tripoli.
*PETER CARL BORMUTH, Petitioner,* *V.* *COUNTY OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN Respondent*
This Court also released an opinion on May 14, 2018 in Murphy v. National Collegiate Athletic Assn., 584 U. S. (2018), Justice Thomas in his concurring opinion wrote:
_"The Treaty of Tripoli was passed by the Senate and signed into law by President John Adams. As such, it is a "legislated text" which must be read "textually". _*_The lower courts in this case read a hypothetical legislative intention into the text by dismissing Article 11 as "a mere formality". The language itself makes a clear direct statement that our government is not based on the Christian religion_*_ and any attempt by a government official to represent our government as Christian contradicts the text and the historical understanding of our founders."_
_“This would be the best of all possible Worlds, if there were no Religion in it”_
*-John Adams* )Letter from John Adams to Thomas Jefferson, 19 April 1817)
_"The day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the Supreme Being as his father, in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter."_
*-Thomas Jefferson* (Letter from Jefferson to John Adams, 11 April 1823)
_"The way to see by Faith is to shut the Eye of Reason."_
    *-Benjamin Franklin* (Poor Richard's Almanac)
_“The study of theology, as it stands in Christian churches, is the study of nothing; it is founded on nothing; it rests on no principles; it proceeds by no authorities; it has no data; it can demonstrate nothing; and it admits of no conclusion....and as this is the case with Christian theology, it is therefore the study of nothing.”_

Peale was one of the most notorious "preachers of success", the branch of evangelical thinking that the wealth and worldly success of a guy are a direct reflection of his being on good terms with the Lord, like "God loves the Rich, and people who are Poor have not understood God".

😂 How can you call yourself a Christian if you DIDN’T vote for Trump? How can you call yourself a Christian if you’re a Democrat? Do you really think God is for abortion? For shutting down the church? For forcing people to violate their religious beliefs? Democrats have supported all that and Republicans have resisted it. Trump is very clearly on the side of the church!

The guy in this video has the exact attitude that got us where we are today - that is, the church failing to take its rightful place in the political arena to guard against wickedness in the land. And now look where we are today.

I'm 49 and have been in the evangelical community my whole life. I've become so disillusioned by the whole Trump MAGA influence upon the community. I could say so much about this, but the bottom line is that it's just another false gospel - the false gospel of American nationalism and right wing politics. All false gospels have one thing in common - they take Jesus and try to mold Him into something that Scripture does not support, in order to further an agenda.

I think that one reason that America has so many 'dodgy' churches is that for a couple of hundred years European nations used it as a dumping ground for fringe Christian sects who were being a pain. After two centuries of Reformation and Counter Reformation the people of England, for instance, were tired of all of this and were incredibly tolerant of what in past days would have been called 'heresy', Greek for 'different thinking'., and it was tolerated. Case in point the so called 'Pilgrim Fathers'. actually a sect called 'Brownists'. They wanted everyone to conform to their off-beat ideas but were told "That's what you believe? Get on with it, just stop trying to convert everyone else. Disgusted at not being made martyrs they went to Holland where the Dutch did the same thing. So the Brownists went off in a huff and sailed for the New World. And the rest, as they say, is Phoney History, a precursor of Fake News...I would contend that a 'spiritual' element is good in society when it allows for quiet discussion and consideration of matters other than the pursuit of monetary wealth. But that is just my opinion,🙃@@hbgriss

    • @Hisgrace4me
      @Hisgrace4me 10 месяцев назад

Thank you Tim for speaking out. My born again evangelical faith has nothing to do with what DT or is enablers say or do. It is based upon what my Lord & Savior Jesus Christ has already done for me and is continuing to do.
God knows the heart of a person and will judge all accordingly. No one is getting away with anything including DT and all his enablers. So, repent of your sins and place your trust in Jesus Christ before it is too late.
