Dan Rather is a cornerstone of my childhood in the 70s and 80s and part of the reason why I have worked in news for 21 years now. What a national treasure and the last of the true journalists.
Sad, he gave you the virus that poisoned journalism. When you fail to see through a bias fraud like Rather I would seek other employment than trying to decipher the news "objectively."

Dan is an absolute legend. He, Jennings and Brokaw. Icons of American news media. Great and impeccable professionals. Today its all big mess. Miss those 70's, 80's and 90's. Best time ever.
I remember a Punch magazine cartoon where a gypsy is sitting outside her wagon with a black eye. A sign is there saying, "Let the gypsy Mayo read your TRUE character." Dan Rather must have visited her.
Well done, Dan Rather. You did a great job, delivering the news, to us. You made a positive impact, you can never know, just how much , it helped all of us. Thank you for your courage, and being, one of the best , on television, delivering the news to us. Happy retirement🎉🎉
Yes, and therein lies the problem. Dan Rather was a journalist and did not seek to be the news. Today, many of the people on TV "news" (often opinion and commentary if cable unlike the original days of CNN) are personalities. Anderson Cooper appears on a New Years' Eve program doing shots with Kathy Griffin? It's unconscionable to me. The standards have gradually eroded, and things serious journalists of his era would never think of doing are now, somehow, accepted. People have become to interested in the talking heads themselves as a form of entertainment rather than the information that they are trying to (or should be) imparting.
Whether you agree with his political views or not you just have to respect the fact that he never gave in or backed down from a story. I love his Big Interview Show on Axess TV.

I was in high school when Mr. Rather signed off from CBS. His voice, like Peter Jennings and Tom Brokaw, echoed through our home as my Mom was preparing dinner for us. Happy to hear he's still doing what he loves in a way he can. All the best to you, sir!
In junior high school, Mr. Rather's book "The Camera Never Blinks" sparked my interest for news and writing/reporting. What a career but, more importantly, what a man. I also live in Austin. It would be cool to run into him one day and get the chance to thank him.
I was young in his CBS years but I loved his show on AXS TV 'The Big Interview' were he would interview musicians or directors and sometimes actors. He was so good that I would watch episodes of people I had no real interest in. I'm glad they showed this because I was curious about his health.
Those AXS TV showed another side of Dan. He was still a keen, aware and prepared reporter. Dan showed being the genuine fan of those artists he interviewed. Bravo Dan. Bravo.
Fake news, however, is simply fake news. Like the story about the MacMartin Preschool supposedly being a den of child molestation and it was all proven a hoax.
Honoring our elders, the ones who came before us and laid the path with their wisdom, seemed a lost pursuit, but here's CBS, showing it's class, respect and heart and soul.❤
What I admire most about Mr. Rather is his willingness to admit to not only embrace professional failures and mistakes, but also derive life lessons from them. He realized he majorly fouled up in the Bush Jr. reportage, has fully owned up to his grave error, and uses this misstep as an example to others in similar positions of trust of what NOT to do. This kind of integrity and introspection is becoming increasingly rarer in today's media, I regret to say!
I graduated Temple University in their school of media and communication ten years ago, and Dan Rather was our guest speaker. When we got our diplomas we each got to shake his hand. I will never forget him taking the time to look each student in the eye, shake their hand, and make them feel proud of their accomplishment. He told me, a 22 year old kid, shaking my hand and making eye contact, “you earned this and I am very proud of you.” Dan Rather is a good man.
Thank you, Dan - for your courage, your integrity, and your unwavering commitment to objectively reporting a story. All things that are sadly in short supply in American journalism today.
His substack has been one of the things keeping me sane through the craziness of modern American politics, and I cannot thank him enough for making it available to read via email for people like me who cannot afford to subscribe. Truly a gentleman and a scholar, and I appreciate his insight and empathy more than he'll ever know.
I proudly grew up in the years of Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, and Peter Jennings in the 80s & 90s. I miss those broadcasts during my childhood. Love those vintage Dan Rather footages from the Walter Cronkite era.
At the age of 4 (yes, 4 y.o.) I would scramble in front of the TV and impatiently wait for the local news to end (as it seemed too false-cheerful and showy), and for Dan Rather to come on with the national news. Unlike the local news, he seemed to be someone I could learn from, I could trust, and had the perfect cadence of voice which made me feel that no matter how bad it was, and how things would end, it was going to be /okay/. And he would always tell me the truth. Those feelings persist today with a greater understanding of what he does and has done, and I am very grateful that he continues to deliver the news, albeit on a different platform. He is very much our Old Oak of America.
I feel very much the same about him, and was probably comforted by his cadence and candor from an early age as well. Thank goodness he still publishes his substack, and I hope he continues to do so for as long as possible. The man has so much wisdom he continues to deliver on a regular basis.

@@Jeff-sp7bgWhat is your issue? He is a great reporter. One story that he was given bad information on is not something to base his career on. He's done so much good work before and after that.

I'm now in my 6th decade of my journey. I watched Dan Rather in my twenties his program started me to see the world beyond the Hemisphere of the Strange Fruit Trees.
Dan was right to question G.W. Bush's record. In the end, we learned that he was right to run that story. G.W. was essentially a draft dodger like the rest of his generation that was more privileged than the average American. To me, Dan Rather was the greatest nightly news person. I came along after Walter Cronkite. My dad taught Social Studies at the high school level for many, many years. One of the classes he taught was Current Events. One of the standing assignments in his class was to watch the news for discussion during class the next day. We didn't have cable so we watched one of three nightly news options. Dan was my dad's favorite. To avoid getting hookwinked by a student in his class, he would take notes to reference the next day. That's the reason we finally got a VCR is because my dad would tape the 30 min nightly news broadcast and then rewatch it, pausing any time he took notes. So, I watched (or overheard) Dan twice each night he was on, for many years. When I look at all the terrible news and new commentary and how ill informed people are, I can't help but feel nostalgic for Dan Rather.
No, in the end we found that Bush didn’t get preferential treatment to get into the TANG, that they were short of pilots, and that he was a competent pilot, flying a very difficult and dangerous jet. We learned that he never defied an order to get his annual physical, as alleged by Mapes, and that he was honorably discharged, not as AWOL. We learned that the documents cited as proof that he went AWOL were produced on a modern computer, not a 70’s era typewriter, and the virulently anti Bush source of the documents gave three different stories of how he came into possession of them. Fake, but accurate, is what Dan is clinging to. An honest person would admit when they were wrong. Dan, it seems, is not an honest person.
This is the first time since 2006, that Dan Rather appears on CBS Television Network. Regardless of whether you watch TV or not, this is historical document.
I am 54 and immigrant and I started watching Dan since 1994. And I certainly loved his patience for journalism besides his decency . wishing Dan a peaceful healthy life from Buffalo New York . ❤

I watched Mr Dan Rather & all the greats of broadcasting the news with mostly my grandfather! News isn't just news...The approach, the actual being in the arc of the story to get a better handle on it, the delivery, caring how it affects us as a community, a nation...That's what sets a great newsman)newscaster apart from everyone else & makes it all important & newsworthy! He'd atop tier newsman)anchor)reporter)down in the ranks)hands-on deliverer that made us watch & listen every time.
92 & STILL able to keep us informed #Blessings
For 92 he looks amazing & "hands down" he is a National Treasure to the news industry & all of us who grew up with him.
Dan Rather is a cornerstone of my childhood in the 70s and 80s and part of the reason why I have worked in news for 21 years now. What a national treasure and the last of the true journalists.
So a known liar (he pushed a story that was a lie to sway an upcoming election) is someone you look up to?
Oh, you’re one of those paid liars. 😂
Journalist? Hahahaha good one!
Dang this man is history himself
Sad, he gave you the virus that poisoned journalism. When you fail to see through a bias fraud like Rather I would seek other employment than trying to decipher the news "objectively."
1:13, This is GOLD! And look at President Nixon stare after Dan Rather says, "no Mr. President, are you?" Dan Rather is a great reporter. He made a mistake with the Bush documents in 2004. He has apologized and that's all you can do. We are all human.
Dan is an absolute legend. He, Jennings and Brokaw. Icons of American news media. Great and impeccable professionals. Today its all big mess. Miss those 70's, 80's and 90's. Best time ever.
I miss Peter so much. All of them, but Peter.
A man of true character .. this interview made me cry .. he is what’s lacking in society today and I fear there are few left like him .
I remember a Punch magazine cartoon where a gypsy is sitting outside her wagon with a black eye. A sign is there saying, "Let the gypsy Mayo read your TRUE character." Dan Rather must have visited her.
Great liar. He left in disgrace.
Well done, Dan Rather. You did a great job, delivering the news, to us. You made a positive impact, you can never know, just how much , it helped all of us. Thank you for your courage, and being, one of the best , on television, delivering the news to us. Happy retirement🎉🎉
He's still writing. He has a substack, and it's really good.
I think we don't have these huge personalities today in journalism.
Yea there’s just too many! As long as money can be made by reading the news and acting competition will be high.
All huge personalities these days are political grifters
@@adamhuffman3354 🤔

I hated the way that he left CBS, but I'm glad that he can now dictate how he finishes his own career.

I cant ever say i ever knew or cared. Most kept it to themselves back in those days. They were true journalists
I did love his election night comments back in the 90s too. "The whole enchilada" when describing a candidate winning electoral votes, lol
This was Netanyahu's response to the AMERICAN lawmaker (Chuksumer) : "IT'S NOT APPROPRIATE, and we are not a banana country that is dictated to by anyone, EVEN AMERICA"... and yet the taxes of American citizens paid with sweat and tears gone to Israel😂😂😂

I remember when he started. What I loved about him was his love for music and musicians. I can't believe is 92 years old. I love this man.
I heard him talk about not being familiar w many or any of the musicians he interviewed and that he didn't listen to music much before
His voice always captivated me.
He ended up interviewing musicians because that was all he could do once he was finished as a news anchor.

I hope you do too. I, like so many others, grew up watching his broadcasts. A true journalist, patriot, and gentleman.
Might you contact him, cause randomly running into him is nil? Then come back to this thread & tell us please.
Dress up as an old rock star and Dan Rather will find you.
A national treasure, thank you for your service to a worldwide community.🙏🏻❤️
Dan will always be my favorite news anchor. His voice reminds me of my childhood.❤
I admire his endurance and focus and service!
Bravo Dan. Bravo.
"Real news is what someone in power somewhere doesn't want you to know."
Fake news, however, is simply fake news. Like the story about the MacMartin Preschool supposedly being a den of child molestation and it was all proven a hoax.
And fake news is sometimes just fake news.
The lesson he taught people was that don't be stupid enough to use obviously phony documents and think you won't be caught!
Thank you mr dan for saying how vets feel about other vets in combat comditions ,that you for your service sir
Please take care
Service? Dan Rather tried to join the Marines but washed out.
Thank you, Dan - for your courage, your integrity, and your unwavering commitment to objectively reporting a story. All things that are sadly in short supply in American journalism today.
You are still the best Dan Rather! Thanks for all your honesty & hard work.
Except for that fake news story incident that got him fired from CBS.
Such integrity, such a gift to us all…that is Dan Rather. ❤
CBS Sunday Morning, Your videos always make me happy, so I subscribed!
His substack has been one of the things keeping me sane through the craziness of modern American politics, and I cannot thank him enough for making it available to read via email for people like me who cannot afford to subscribe. Not so smart when he thought he could fool the world with fake documents.
I proudly grew up in the years of Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, and Peter Jennings in the 80s & 90s. I miss those broadcasts during my childhood. Love those vintage Dan Rather footages from the Walter Cronkite era.
Same
At the age of 4 (yes, 4 y.o.) I would scramble in front of the TV and impatiently wait for the local news to end (as it seemed too false-cheerful and showy), and for Dan Rather to come on with the national news.
Bill Cosby fooled us for fifty years too.
"...perfect cadence of voice..." Yes indeed! Exactly!
I feel very much the same about him, and was probably comforted by his cadence and candor from an early age as well. Thank goodness he still publishes his substack, and I hope he continues to do so for as long as possible. The man has so much wisdom he continues to deliver on a regular basis.
Bill Cosby sounded like a good guy to me as well. I had no suspicions of the awful truth about him.

Rather and Cronkite are the kings of CBS! I miss back when newscasts always have the breaking stories 24/7.
"This is Dan Rather on CBS Evening News".
My favorite newscaster. And I miss him.
It sounds like your dad was a wonderful, conscientious teacher.
Dan Rather knowingly told a big lie using fake documents. He deserved to be fired. Deal.
