I ALWAYS FELT LIKE THIS TOO!!!!
The number one reason why Beyonce became my favorite singer was simply because of the music!!! Even though Dangerously In Love came out in 2003, I didn't hear it until 2004. That album alone, how the songs were placed, for her to just simply sing, and the way the album made me felt, immediately drew my attention to Beyonce. Even though I have more reasons to love her now, it will always fall back on one thing: the music! Even if she don't release any videos, we have the music!!!! And I'm halt with this!

Also, another important thing that many singers (even in the Golden Age) lack - the evenness of dynamic. As legendary Zinka Milanov wisely observed: "The piano must be the same as forte. Not in terms of volume, but density has to be there". That's a real example of pp on a very high top B ruclips.net/video/X-SguPkEDwE/видео.html There a few singers who' possesses this type of skill - Renata Tebaldi, Zinka Milanov, (in her prime), Rosanna Carteri, Birgit Nilsson (with less spectacular pp, but still) and also other few to mention.

Great video! It's really informative! With your instrumental example for timbral dynamics, would it be the other way around? With acoustic musical instruments, typically louder instruments are ones that produce higher frequencies and overtones. In the case of the alto saxophone (the one in the video) and tuba, wouldn't the saxophone be perceived aslouder or more piercing because of it's timbre and it's higher frequencies? PS the saxophone is a woodwind :-)

They put so much hype behind Beyonce that Kelly and Michelle get overlooked. Kelly was not playing any games in that clip and the others that I have seen them sing that song. I so missing singing in a choir and doing Total Praise. That song is not easy to sing, but our choir director definitely knew how to get the best out of us and make sure we had the build up that you have to have with that song.
Throughout this clip I keep thinking of Aretha when she sang He's Got the Whole World In His Hands ending and how the choir and music was building and Queen definitely read the room and hit that note!

You do realize that Beyonce is the one who arranged those vocals so Kelly could execute them at that time and all 3 of them executed in the vocal register(Kelly top, Beyonce middle and Michelle lower) they were singing in. What made dc3 great is all 3 of them could be interchangeable wrt the registers/harmonic parts and either Beyonce or Michelle could do what Kelly did. BTW, what I said take nothing from Kelly. DC3 is my favorite female vocal group in mainstream entertainment.
