I love dynamic singing. Everytime I hear it, it makes me feel like a stream of water is flowing through me because of the continual/gradual nature of the voice that I'm hearing
I ALWAYS FELT LIKE THIS TOO!!!! The number one reason why Beyonce became my favorite singer was simply because of the music!!! Even though Dangerously In Love came out in 2003, I didn't hear it until 2004. That album alone, how the songs were placed, for her to just simply sing, and the way the album made me felt, immediately drew my attention to Beyonce. Even though I have more reasons to love her now, it will always fall back on one thing: the music! Even if she don't release any videos, we have the music!!!! And I'm halt with this!
Linda Ronstadt is one of the very small handful of pop female artists who performed opera on stage and in records, this is no easy feat. Bless all these women.
I think Kelly joined at a higher volume because she was singing the higher part of the harmony, and for some singers, the higher they sing, the louder they get. Beyoncé was able to sing with a full range of dynamics because she was singing at the center of her tessitura.
As always I'm always learning something new from these videos that you exquisitely put together. This is one of the reasons why I love studying gospel singers. Daryl Coley is one of my all time favorites gospel singers. Kelly is amazing. She's so underrated.

This was an amazing video. Both the vocalists and your ability to put such a wonderful video together. Your knowledge and your choice of video clips work so well, it really helps to further showcase what you've explained.
Not to insert Mariah in just every conversation, but what do you think about her dynamics? I've seen people on YT criticize her lack of dynamics but as you demonstrated in this video, notated dynamics is not the only type of dynamics there is. I personally think she has a good understanding of ambient dynamics tho she might not explicitly sung a crescendo, decrescendo, etc.
I’m aware that it belongs to the “woodwind” family of instruments. However, the “timbral dynamic” section is talking about physical design. Saxophones and Tubas are both made and designed from brass metal. Thanks for watching ♥️🙂
Tbh, I've always loved that clip of Kelly Rowland showing why she was the Whitney Houston of the group! Dem otha gurls did luk shook when she hit that B4 :D It definitely changed the dynamics and gave some distortion, but holding back at that time would've been out of character for both Rowland's voice and the song itself ("Total Praise"?) which is meant to climax in such a way. Her vocals must've been turned down significantly on the "Survivor" album because the mix has her quiet in this part. Best tone, most soul, unrivalled power. Kelly should've been a huge artist. God knows why He allows our lives to go different routes.
@@MCharlerySmith Are you talking about the “Amen” harmony? That was her part 😂 Switch Kelly for Beyoncé and there’s your unrivalled power. What a shame she could never show consistency.
They put so much hype behind Beyonce that Kelly and Michelle get overlooked. Kelly was not playing any games in that clip and the others that I have seen them sing that song. I so missing singing in a choir and doing Total Praise. That song is not easy to sing, but our choir director definitely knew how to get the best out of us and make sure we had the build up that you have to have with that song. Throughout this clip I keep thinking of Aretha when she sang He's Got the Whole World In His Hands ending and how the choir and music was building and Queen definitely read the room and hit that note!
Kelly's singing was very inconsistent. One day she would do that, and the next she would be much worse. She didn't stay in vocal shape as long as Beyonce either, who has just been getting better.
You do realize that Beyonce is the one who arranged those vocals so Kelly could execute them at that time and all 3 of them executed in the vocal register(Kelly top, Beyonce middle and Michelle lower) they were singing in. What made dc3 great is all 3 of them could be interchangeable wrt the registers/harmonic parts and either Beyonce or Michelle could do what Kelly did. BTW, what I said take nothing from Kelly. DC3 is my favorite female vocal group in mainstream entertainment.
Now that I’m seeing this it reminds me of the things I would learn in gcse music. I bet my music teacher in high school is showing her students these videos.
hello!! this video was really helpful in understanding the differences in dynamics!! By any chance is there a version with the bar graphs for the male voices to see where male voices fit in with their power?? Thank you so much!!
Love the way you broke it down for remedial learners. I think I'm starting to learn something now. I think Faith Evans might be one of those lyric voice types. That's probably why I never appreciated her talents until rnb divas came around and I noticed that she gives all she got when she sings and I was impressed. Just like her costar Keke Wyat who might be a forte voice type even though they both might be sopranos. Did I get that right?
Minor quibble, but saxophones are woodwinds because they're reeded instruments where the sound is generated by the vibration of a reed via blowing (like a clarinet or oboe), and not through the vibration of the player's lips (like a trumpet or french horn)
Hi! The, "timbral dynamics" refers to the physical design and shape of where the sound is coming. A saxophone and Tuba are both physically made out of brass that is why I referred to them as, "brass" instruments. It would be the same difference between a clarinet and oboe two instruments that are made out of the same material, but one is bigger than the other and produces a bigger sound. Thanks for watching ❤️😊
Great video! It's really informative! With your instrumental example for timbral dynamics, would it be the other way around? With acoustic musical instruments, typically louder instruments are ones that produce higher frequencies and overtones. In the case of the alto saxophone (the one in the video) and tuba, wouldn't the saxophone be perceived aslouder or more piercing because of it's timbre and it's higher frequencies? PS the saxophone is a woodwind :-)
