As a day one Mariah Carey fan, I am glad to see her receive these kind of flowers. She deserves props for her gospel and gospel-pop offerings as much as her #1 hits.
Her performance of "Fly Like a Bird" at the Grammy's is one of my favorite live performances by any vocalist. Cause in the beginning you can see she's struggling. Physically or mentally she's not feeling her best, and I've been there as a musician. The way that she pushes thru and preserves and just murders the end of that performance it gets me going lol. It takes me to church every time.
As an atheist who used to hate any religious music I have to say: she was the first person who made me begin to appreciate the gospel music in terms of its elements and characteristics by the genius way she constructed her gospel repertoire. Even tho they are not my favorite songs and I can’t connect with the spiritual and surrealistic messages, I can still being able to find the beauty on her gospel songs and recognize the relevance of the style on a lot of songs from several artists I like.
That last line thoo 💯 🔥 “Mariah is a contemporary artist who uses the sounds and influences of the past to craft a sound of the present”. Perfectly said, great video!
We love Gospelriah. Honestly, she’s an R&B girl to the core but if she had grown up singing and performing gospel, there’s no telling where her career would’ve went in regards to stardom and success. I would even say this about her singing Jazz, as well. She can scat her ass off.
She actually does go to Jazz concerts and sing. I know she also had a Lady’s In The Blue’s reference in one of her songs, etc. I think Mariah still has more secrets about her than we are lead on to believe!🥰 And I LOVEEEE that! But she really is an R&B girl. On Music Box Anniversary, she praised some R&B singer (I forgot her name) and gave her the highest of praise and said she loved her! The girl wasn’t massively popular either, so that tells me even more how much she loves R&B.
@@bmwjourdandunngoddess6024 absolutely. I’d love a jazz album from her as well as gospel. But she is tried and true contemporary R&B and has always stuck with that no matter what the trends were and I adore that about her as an artist.

This is much appreciated. Her gospel stylings elevated her music in a way that set her apart from other divas (other than Whitney). Her faith is apparent and the gift she was given has been put to exquisite use. A true legend.
I have long since wished that Mariah would sing solely Gospel, in consideration of all that she has personally been through, she would be a light to so many people. And we all know that her voice is a gift sent directly from God! Girl, it’s NEVER TOO LATE. Please bless the gospel community with an album of strictly Gospel and give God HIS flowers!
Thank you so much for celebrating Mariah’s gospel side. I believe Mariah is one of the few artists that are heavily influenced in Pop, R&B, Hip Hop and Gospel equally. Your video was also amazingly documented. Love your channel. Keep up the amazing work. We truly appreciate your work.
The way Mariah didn't attend church regularly or sing in the choir as a kid as she would have loved it, due to her dysfunctional family and two homes she had But still gospel and church played a big part in her musicality and career.
She shows her love and respect of Gospel music through her inspiration from and use of it in a lot of her music. She’s a church girl who never got to go properly.
The influence of Gospel is so great on Mariah's career and done in such an incredible way that to this day fans ask for an entirely gospel album from Mariah! And if one day that happens, it will be an incredible spot on in her career and in music in general because Mariah is an example of genius and creativity! She knows how to surprise! And "Heavenly" is a masterpiece! My favorite from Me I Am Mariah
She took too long to do it! She's no longer anointed for it. May God RESTORE her LOST ANOINTING to sing Gospel in Jesus' name before JESUS RETURNS and she's permanently disqualified from joining God's heavenly choir. 1 Corinthians 9: 19Even though I am a free man with no master, I have become a slave to all people to bring many to Christ. 20When I was with the Jews, I lived like a Jew to bring the Jews to Christ. When I was with those who follow the Jewish law, I too lived under that law. Even though I am not subject to the law, I did this so I could bring to Christ those who are under the law. 21When I am with the Gentiles who do not follow the Jewish law, I too live apart from that law so I can bring them to Christ. But I do not ignore the law of God; I obey the law of Christ. 22When I am with those who are weak, I share their weakness, for I want to bring the weak to Christ. Yes, I try to find common ground with everyone, doing everything I can to save some. 23I do everything to spread the Good News and share in its blessings. 24Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! 25All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. 26So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. 27I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.

I’ve always admired her vocal performance and substance. This woman, this woman has always had the utmost dignified influence and that’s what’s important. It’s needed in the industry
This is absolutely a gem of a video and one of the few rare instances that showcases an aspect of Mariah's musical influences while also revealing something new. These comparisons are spot on and you really placed a spotlight on artists a lot of fans had probably never been exposed to (me included) but are for sure grateful to be enlightened with such revealing insights.

While a full Gospel album from her is still a dream, I am glad at the very least she went all out with the Gospel influence through Merry Christmas, occasionally on Merry Christmas II You, and the Magical Christmas soundtrack. Her artistry shows through on all three, especially Merry Christmas, contributing to its timeless resurgence every year.

Thank you for this. I actually used this very argument as a child to get permission from my religious parents to listen to her music. I convinced them she was mainstream pop gospel. Mariah touches her fans because the gospel elements are so very hopeful and uplifting. You are hitting the nail on the head! You may love Aretha, but you respect the girls!
Another amazing video from you! Really loved the research you did to link up the modern songs with their old school gospel influences. I also love the fact that you included Mariah's 2014 album Elusive Chanteuse. I feel like everyone slept on that album but Mariah put out some bangers and that album definitely deserves more shine! The song One More Try on that album is another classic gospel Mariah track that I personally keep in heavy rotation!
I think the influence of Melonie Daniels needs to be mentioned here. Also from Staten Island she, comes from a family of preachers and singers. Melonie led the gospel choir at her college before becoming a session and background vocalist. It is said Melonie introduced Mariah to some of the gospel music she loved as gospel was not played in her home.
There is a recording of KCS singing Fly Like A Bird somewhere. It was apart of the Grammy tribute album for the year Mariah won. No one has posted it…YET! But this was a well done video. For Anytime You Need A Friend, I assumed she wrote it as if God was singing the lyrics.
I love this info on her gospel genre of music is so good . But you forget another song that she did on her emc=2 album she did a song call I wish you well which is a very gospel song & very uplifting song too 🥹
Heavenly was such an underrated song! The amount of vocal layers in that songs are incredible and somehow it doesn't sound too much or less. It's perfect. That's why she's a brilliant composer and a producer 🙌👏 Thank you for making this video and acknowledging Mariah's Gospel side 🤎
Great analysis and overview. Even though she was not raised in the church or a gospel music tradition, it was apparent from her earliest recordings that she was profoundly influenced by gospel music and singers. This is what contributed to the regular comparisons to Whitney in her early days. Mariah was a pop singer doing gospel-influenced music, while Whitney was a gospel singer forced into a rigid pop idiom.
Another masterpiece! Educational and entertaining as always! Mariah Carey is a creative soul mixing genres, octaves and personal struggles to bring out beautiful music. Wishing her well.
You should have definitely mentioned "I Wish You Well" from her E=MC2 album! It's a pure gospel injection that directly quotes Bible verses even, very inspirational.
Thank you for posting this, I do hope Mariah puts out a Gospel album, that would be great for her real fans to enjoy!!! I was so excited when "MAKE it happen" came out, and it pierced my heart when the words, and if you get down on your knees and pray to the Lord, I knew right then, Mariah had a relationship with GOD ALMIGHTY! !!! I was so elated, and instantly began following her career. GOD SENT. I JUST LOVE ALL HER MUSIC AND HAVE HER ENTIRE COLLECTION INCLUDING HER BOOKS. 4 CONCERTS ATTENDED AND SO APPRECIATE WHAT THE LORD HAS GIFTED US WITH.
Gospel influence is central to Mariah Carey's career, and Christian spirituality is a cornerstone of her life. It's impressive how deeply Mariah has immersed herself in gospel tradition. She did this entirely on her own accord. Nearly everything about Mariah is gospel-inspired, including the mannerisms she employs on stage while singing. However, those unfamiliar with these nuances may not be able to discern them.
Great video again and I like how you went full in on the massive Gospel Music that has built up Mariah Carey. Even the way she often goes down to her really low notes is a direct imitation/adaptation of many female Gospel singers who can almost show their entire range in the progression of a song. She’s written some true hits in her career and I am giving a richer well of knowledge to help pay and present fans understand some of the things they enjoy in her music and where they came from. Such things can only help with gently easing the sense of alienation and difference as a negative between cultures when you realize someone you admire artistically is strongly informed and by a culture you may not understand or have ever really cared to learn about.
An incredible video! In her song I Wish You Well, Mariah even references bible verses. Her relationship with God is relevant throughout her career, and shes been so open. It’s all in the lyrics and music. 🤍
Shout out to make it happen! The song I most identify with from Mariah. 8:13 Edit: There’s also the fact that the lyrics say “and if you get down on your knees at night and pray to the lord he’s gonna make it happen” screams gospel haha
@@julievanessa89 first of all you better let the people know! Secondly, Mariah’s sample game is underrated ash. Her samples are so seamless and they also speak to her amazing taste in music.

The song One More Try on that album is another classic gospel Mariah track that I personally keep in heavy rotation!

Gospel is about emotion feelings & humanity, religion is a man made artifact ❤
Gospel is about Jesus/God❤
Let's praise and love the annointed! She is annointed... bless god!
I realize time and time again how genius Mariah's songwriting and how insane her vocal abilities are.
Melonie Daniels's wig at that Christmass concert was a kiki 😂
I just have to comment this, I can't unhear the, "somebody's doing the wrong note" in vanishing ... lol lives rent free.
Amazing. She was influenced by Gospel music & she also influenced Gospel music.
The only artist who sings songs about the goodness of God.
In this tine of age.
Emotions is her most soulful album
Very smart commentary. Mariah started off with a deep understanding of gospel and r&b.
Vanishing, ATYNAF, I am Free.
Well done video.
I could not have asked for a better video to watch tonight! Thank you so much for sharing this friend. You’re the greatest.
To this day, this is one of my favorite videos you’ve made
Shout out to a baby Kelly Price singing background vocals for Mariah
I didn’t like how Kelly has said some nasty things about Mariah.
@@bmwjourdandunngoddess6024 When ? What did she say ?
Your so lucky you got to see her concerts!😩💖
Thanks!
The musical education we received from this channel is extra, ordinary, and beautiful. I’m very appreciative. Thank you.
When you believe and hero are also gospel influenced songs
Great video, the way you merged Mariah's music with her influences is masterful. Opened a new side of her for me, that I didn't know!
Shout out to make it happen! The song I most identify with from Mariah. 8:13
Edit: There’s also the fact that the lyrics say “and if you get down on your knees at night and pray to the lord he’s gonna make it happen” screams gospel haha
Yes!!!
Also, Make It Happen heavily samples Alicia Myer’s “I Want To Thank You” which is all about God.
@@julievanessa89 first of all you better let the people know! Secondly, Mariah’s sample game is underrated ash. Her samples are so seamless and they also speak to her amazing taste in music.
@@AchillesandArtemis So true! I learned about so many amazing songs & musicians through her samples and especially her interviews talking about her musical influences!!
Thanks for this great analysis (I’ve learned a lot on Gospel music & enjoyed watching each moment).🙏🏽🎤🤍As a Christian, I’ve always connected to the spiritual effect of most of Mariah’s music.✨
Whew!!! I felt the Spirit while watching. What an incredibly unique video structure! Love MC & this video ❤
"Fly like a Bird" is one of my favorite.
Mariah Carey, Kelly Price, Shanrae Price, and Melonie Daniels all 4 did a few Gospel songs together.
Not Mariah saying "I wish I could soar like that". Mariah girl! You ROARED! What are you talking about 😂😕
Lol She's soooo hard on herself. Girl you're one of the best!
Lunshin Pace Rhodes!
Goosebumps throughout this video
I love Mariah's Make it Happen.
