Thank you for this channel. Took some steps towards cutting the cord with Comcast. A few days ago, I returned my second and last cable box. Have switched to streaming apps for the TV. I expect to change out the cable modem this week and be rid of all the rented equipment from comcast. Got a new and lower bill a couple of days ago. So nice to have a few more dollars in my pocket at the end of the month, instead of handing the money over to them. Yes!!!

Comcast and AT&T are also paying content providers to provide channels for their customers, even if they're channels that a segment of their audience doesn't want to watch. ESPN is a good example. Lots of people don't care for sports, yet they're still paying for the channel even when they don't watch it. ESPN doesn't want to be stuffed into a sports tier, they want to reach as many eyeballs as they can. It's about the $$$.

It’s just as much to gain a feeling of power to feed their corporate egos. They need government regulation because if they keep it up, everybody’s going to lose their internet and tv service because they will not be able to afford any of it. They need to be reigned in, they are monsters.
Also, advertising these days is so prolific and intrusive and annoying, it needs to be regulated. The joke is, as the middle class shrinks and loses money, being forced to pay for corporate price gouging at places like the grocery store, advertising get more & more in its face to buy things. And it’s a waste, nobody has any money anymore to buy anything.

  • @jimgarofalo5479
    @jimgarofalo5479 Год назад +76

I have been a cord cutter for over 12 years. Now, I will tell you why:
First thing is selection and variety. With cable, I have to pay for 300 channels that I will never look at to get the 5 or 6 that I want. I wanted more voice in selecting the channels that I will look at. I also resent having to support the obscure channels like golf, quilting, and other narrow focus channels.
Second thing is advertising. I consider channels that are only available through a signal provider to be premium subscription channels. Channels like History, Discovery, A&E, and other like channels. When I am PAYING for a channel (like History), I do NOT want to be bombarded with advertising for things that I do not want, do not need, and will never buy. The last time I watched a program on the History channel on cable, I was waiting for the conclusion of the show I had just seen. I counted up to 20 ads and just shut the TV off. Next day, I cut the cable. Enough is enough! I never did see the end of that program.
Third thing is PRICE! I know people that pay as much as $240 per month for cable TV. I'll take a hard pass on that one! Constant price increases on an already non-necessity utility just will not make the cut. The owners of this programming do not seem to realize that they are pricing themselves out of the market.
Those are my reasons for cutting the cord. In place of cable, I use streaming. Between NetFlix, Amazon Prime, and a handful of free services, I can view about all of the programming that I want for a much more reasonable price.

Michigan here. My opinion is that Comcast is close to the end in all regards. The way they price their products and the constant rate increases without any extra benefits reminds me of how SBC (now AT&T) would price gouge for every service provided after a hook in deal. My wife and I dropped a land line in the early 90's... yes our phone was huge and had next to no options... but we saved a lot of money and it opened up more freedom for us. Comcast will never be able to compete with cell and satellite service and the extensive options they have over a land line service. Why pay for a land line service to be used on a cell service when not at home. If I was in charge of Comcast I would everything I could to get as many customers as possible to get the most money in a buyout to a cell or satellite company. That would mean very low costs with all options available .. .all channels and shows.. phone, internet.. everything for a low price.

What's the point in cord cutting? If you really aim to cut the cord then what you want to do is go off the grid. Human beings are always addicted to some form of media so I'm losing the concept of what cord cutting is. You either have a roku, fire TV, o roku or just your DVD player. Gamers will have that and more! I cut the cord when I realized I had too much lying around so I had to limit it to a few devices then put the rest of it in storage. Leaving just my PC, NvidiashieldTV, PSvitaTV, and Steam. That's been working out so far, but we're all connected to the media somehow. I suppose the most affective way to cut the cord is don't buy the latest and greatest console only use your TV and cast things from your phone. If you get a roku you are adding more cords!

I don’t have Comcast, my area is Spectrum and I cut out spectrum tv a few months ago. I believe all cable tv companies are in danger of going under and it’s their own fault. They should have always allowed customers to pick only the channels they want. If I only want 5 channels, then that’s all I should have to pay for. People are tired of paying for so many channels they have no interest in. Also, the network content cable companies offer is dismal. The same sitcom reruns, movies, etc is repeated day after day. I understand that’s the big networks and not the fault of cable companies but it’s still another reason why the consumer should have the choice to select only what they want. My worry is that all of the cable tv losses will just spill over to internet subscriptions and those prices will skyrocket exponentially. And for many folks, they have no other internet options and will have to absorb the cost.

If I were going to a basic cable package, I'd probably go to Sling which seems reasonably priced. What I would bite on, would be any streaming service that offers HDR or Dolby Vision 4k video and multi channel audio (minimum 5.1, but preferably Atmos). As for Peacock, seems I get it for free on my NVidia but i hardly ever watch it. Don't know why I would want a Comcast version of Roku. They actually sent me one for free a few years back and I tried it out. It was incredibly cheaply made, did not even have key, but had their old time press pads instead. Sometimes when i call they ask me if i would drop it off at one of their service centers since i'm not using it. For the life of me I don't know why they would want it back. Maybe they plan to lease it to someone. This may be my last year for Comcast. I had a special rate for their 1gbps internet which they bumped up by $25 a month this year, so I scaled back to preserve my old rate and signed a one year deal. I think 5g is coming to my area by next year, so I will probably kiss Comcast off when that happens. I'm still pissed at them for the data caps when I first started and also because they switched their protocol so my Doccis 3.0 modem was rendered obsolete. I currently lease a 3.1 Doccis from them for $15 a month, but I won't need it if I go to 5G next year. I hate Comcast.

They ran the drop from the street behind the house which had to cross a street, neighbors yard, half our yard to the house. Every time I had to call support I'd get a tech who didn't want to hear about the drop line. This went on for 8 years and not once did they send a tech who would look at the service history or even go to the poll unless it was the 3rd or 4th visit. They would blame my router and leave. No longer have charter and will NEVER go back.

I'm on Spectrum. As I understand it there was a deal struck when they were bought out to not implement data caps for x number of years. That period is due to expire in nine months or so IIRC.
My only other option currently is 25 megabit AT&T, for some reason no U-verse.
However there is light at the end of the pipe. Several cities in the area have clubbed together and are in the process of creating a fiber network using some dark fiber. Once active it "should" provide a practical or even superior alternative. I might even consider cord cutting at that point.
The issue with cord cutting is access to very specific channels which are rarely packaged together. History and Big Ten , plus any network likely to carry a OSU game. Complicated.

I suspect this is not for long term outages, but when you lose power for an hour or so or cable service goes. Most outages are relatively short term.
Personally you can get a good UPS for about a hundred bucks that would keep a cable router/ wifi router going that long. In terms of devices, most people these days use laptops and tablets and phones anyway, so they could survive the blip as well. In terms of the cell backup, customer can use their phone as a wifi hotspot and do the same thing. The Comcast bundle is convenient and automatic, but if they charge 10 or 15 bucks for it, that is costly as hell over the long term.

I cut the cord a year ago and never looked back. I was a Comcast customer paying $175 a month and only watched 5 channels. Also, I live in a condominium and every time Comcast connected a new customer in the building, they simply spliced into the line, effectively reducing my signal to the point where they had to come out and install a “booster” in my condo. Six months later, and after splicing into the same line a few more times, my picture was pixelating again. That did it. Bubbye comcast.
