At the start you've positioned your griffon to be hiding from the cannons. Could those cannons not see the griffon wing-tips poking out either side of that rocky terrain and thus see the griffon?

Pg 103 of core rules under line of sight states "If a straight, uninterrupted line can be drawn from within the model’s vision arc to any part of the other model, there is a line of sight" which suggests its to the model (rather than base)?

Line of sight in Old World is to the base. And Cannons are unique in that they need line of sight to the spot they want the cannon ball to land at.
