Thank you for the video! We started our channel 2 years ago when we purchased our Jeep. “Video scrapbooking” is what I call my motivation for making the vids and it’s been so rewarding. So far it’s been a $0 budget... IPhone camera and free editing software. Small channel, but I’m proud of it. Thanks again! MontanaFamilyTrails.

that's one of the things I like about your videos, you don't show long segments of driving down any part of the trail. You really give a good feel for what an obstacle is like by giving a couple different angles of it and cutting into another part of the trail, and you really do a good job of narrating; that is a lot more interesting than music through a lot of it, and showing the spotter directing people over a tough part of the trail, and not editing out the mistakes really gives a little more reality to it, and really, I think people learn from seeing how a person might of got hung up or something broke or they had to manually lock the lockers to get up a part; it all makes people think about what the difference of having the lockers engaged or not having them engaged; it can be the difference of spinning out or grabbing enough traction to crawl up the rocks! I'm wanting to learn, and that is my main purpose of watching, but it's great to see some of the super nice people you hit the trails with as well!

These are very important tips! It is important to remember that you can make spectacular adventure films without expensive equipment. We started our filming our trips with a $80 Sony camcorder, very little experience, but great ideas, inspiration, and enthusiasm. I think some of the videos with the $80 camera still beat newer videos with the $800 camera. Sophisticated equipment only supplements what at the foundation needs to be a planned, thought out, crafted production. You could have top of the line camera equipment and not keep the vehicles in frame, or have no continuity between clips.

Thank you for talking about the editing. Often times great content is ruined by overly "fancy" transitions and special effects. Don't get me started on bad, blaring music and audio. I often politely comment on YT channels when I find a great video with bad editing and horrible, loud music and get blasted by the content creator, but who are they creating the content for, me or themselves? Your is some of the BEST!

Something I noticed that you didn't mention in the video is the composition of your video of the Jeep. So many people film "the Jeep", which usually means aiming the camera at the center of the body and leaving it there. You move from the grill, and then crouch to show the steering angle, then to show the wheel movement over the terrain, panning to the rear to show the axle articulation... It's much more dynamic and interesting. I think it shows the camerawork benefits from an experienced offroader that knows what the truck is doing and what is interesting in the details. So much more than just a car driving by a tripod at window-height.

I've enjoyed your channel tremendously since discovering it one night while surfing for overland camping ideas. At 72, I had to find a new outlet to keep enjoying nature as backpacking long distances and trekking up and down mountains was becoming more difficult. I've car (base) camped throughout the U.S., Europe and a little in the Middle East, mainly to explore trails that led to incredible scenery, historic sites and fishing spots. Watching your channel and Chris Shontz on Venture4WD has been inspirational in providing exciting new ideas for the remaining chapters in my life. The enthusiasm you guys have for this way of life is contagious and I've caught the bug!

I think it's great that you spend so much energy setting up the camera like that at multiple angles in the same place to show the terrane around you. When I first started watching your videos, it was hard to tell if someone was in your vehicle driving for you while you drove by or showing the approach, or if someone was driving while you operated the camera or if you were using a tripod. some of the low shots, I thought you were using a drone as smooth as the video shot was. I didn't know you were using the crane 2 Gimbal to stabilize the movement. there were some good shots at the Black Bear Pass trail from 2018. I'm pretty sure you used the drone on one shot since the camera looked like it was hovering over the edge of a steep drop off. the mountains and trails were pretty amazing there. That whole series had some pretty amazing mountains and trails. It's something to think that horses and wagons traveled those trails to the old mining towns over 100 years ago! In Texas, back in 2009, I was in Baird, Tx. visiting my mom when she was alive and they had some chuck wagons come through town. It was completely functional and they held events that involved the old west wagons like that! Those were some tough people that lived back then with very little comforts that we have today. They ate a lot dust on their travels, and they had to ration water and food during their journeys, and they didn't have anything to keep meat cold. What a different world we live in today!

This was a fun video to watch! I was a broadcaster for 20 years (mostly radio, but with several years' worth of TV work sprinkled in), and it was fun to get this behind-the-scenes look at your production style. I particularly enjoyed your section on dynamic camera moves and shifts of point-of-view. It was a nice trip down Memory Lane for me, because I always had a reputation for enjoyable and unique, yet natural-feeling camera moves. I have the most fun when I get to think ahead and anticipate some detail that I want to capture, such as my then-toddler son's first steps into the Gulf of Mexico (I knew I wanted to capture that first small 10-inch wave curling around his legs while I steadied him, so I arranged all the settings on my 35mm Pentax for my wife, with a fast shutter speed to freeze the wave in place), or when my youngest daughter was born, and I sent her big brother and sisters ahead down the hallway so I could catch the moment when they first clustered up at the window to the neonatal ward to see their baby sister for the first time... so many ways to capture the story in a picture or a short video clip!
You seem to have that same eye for the story. And I like that!

    • @SuperSpectus

Oh... I also wanted to mention an open-source/freeware video editor that might be helpful to you or your audience: VSDC Free Video Editor and it's companion video-production products. It's a pretty good alternative to some of the expensive pro or commercial consumer products, with a feature-rich interface. And if a user likes the freeware version enough to upgrade to VSDC Pro, they can get a lifetime license for the Pro version for $20 bucks, which offers hardware acceleration and a supplemental audio-editing subsystem that allows nonlinear layered editing of audio tracks. I have it on my PC, and maybe one day I will be posting cool four-wheeling videos of my own, especially if I swing a transfer to Arizona (I love and miss AZ!)

Thanks for the behind the scenes look - very informative! You've given me some good ideas for my Canon 70d, GoPro, and new Mavic Mini. I had to laugh when you mentioned folks having all of this video and then doing nothing with it... that's me!

Your videography is actually very good. I've enjoyed your videos. The content is great and the production quality is very professional. My sons and I really enjoyed the XJ build videos. I have twins also, so I have 2 XJ builds in my future. You and your sons have been an inspiration to us. The videos have also helped narrow down some choices for us! Keep up the great work!

Thanks Brad! Appreciate the info.. Been a follower for a number of years now. Always wondered how you put out those amazing videos. I’m not a big fan of watching RUclips vids through the windshield and just recently found out that I could opt out to see less vids like that (my 12yr old daughter showed me how). Keep up the good work. I grew up in So Cal and now live in the Carolinas, and your trips bring back a lot of memories when I was growing up and going on adventures with my Dad and friends.

I've been wheeling for 40 years. Back in the day we took A lot of pictures.
Of course digital video hadn't been invented yet. Damn I'm old. I love off roading. I was Rock crawling hill climbing overlanding long before it became so popular in recent years. It's amazing and awesome. I discovered RUclips and became addicted to your channel and others.
Anyway my brother calls me and asked me if I wanted to run up to Disney Oklahoma and go wheeling for the day. I said yes of coarse. When we arrived I decided to break out my smart phone and video while we rode the trails.
After viewing the footage I thought I would edit a video together which I did. Then I thought what the heck create a channel and upload it. I've done only 3 wheeling trips 12 videos. I love doing it. I'm getting an evo 2 PRO drone and recently purchased a 4k video camera. Check it out I know I have a lot to learn but I'll get there. Thank you for all your tips. I will certainly apply all of them. Thank you.

Best Jeep channel ever! I have filmed so much stuff over the years and have been so scared of the editing part that it has sat in iMovies for a while, thanks for the video and the very helpful tips it has got me more excited to edit and film. 0IIIIII0

Great video! This really helps add perspective on watching your videos and how you are making it happen, adds another dimension to the enjoyment. I also appreciate the tips! This motivates me to get the cameras back out and get more video of our local groups wheeling and do more reviews of the jeep family style! Hopefully my videos will help someone else decide to join the Jeep community like your videos helped me!

Oh man the editing is what is getting me. Maybe it’s because I am using iMovie and the learning curve is a bit steep when you are my age! But I will get it done eventually. I guess the big thing is that many of us are afraid of the video not being perfect or getting a thumbs down. Just have to do it!!
Thanks for making this video Brad as it’s always nice to see behind the scene work. Well done!

Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences with videoing and providing very helpful information and suggestions. I take lots of photos will I am out desert camping, but very little videoing. I have felt some what intermediated videoing and then editing. Your 4 points of videoing were excellent and extremely helpful. Thank you and happy trails!
